- mdjohnson1, on 12/04/2008, -0/+38Free Shipping on items less than 2 inches long.
- burstaneurysm, on 12/04/2008, -0/+23I have a feeling Amazon is going to be flooded with pictures of *****, ***** and, in the above case, dicks.
- doublsh0t, on 12/04/2008, -0/+13What they say is a product-matching algorithm is probably a couple thousand indian people in a warehouse matching all the products they get pictures of.
- timusca, on 12/04/2008, -0/+12It'll come back as a tube of lipstick.
- doublsh0t, on 12/04/2008, -1/+10just walked right into that one didn't he
- xsecretfiles, on 12/04/2008, -8/+15I took a picture of my penis. I'm waiting for my purchase results
HAHA! - redrighthand, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6So I sent it this photo
http://www.flickr.com/photos/chx2007/2407099397/
And it suggested this item
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001E24G12/ref=ar_gw_dp
Is there a team of people reviewing the content you send like ChaCha?
It gave that result in about 3 minutes. - txpunk, on 12/04/2008, -2/+7Extenze?
http://www.amazon.com/ExtenZe-Natural-Enhancement- ... - amida, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5It's powered by Mechanical Turk, so Amazon is crowdsourcing the labor of searching for the stuff.
https://www.mturk.com/mturk/preview?groupId=6Z3ZX7 ... - RobotBuddha, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4It's primarily to help you remember to buy it, and from amazon. So instead of just a picture or a note, you get an email with a link to amazon's website to buy it from them.
- CynicalTyler, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4Agreed: you've missed the point Barackalypse. Sometimes I walk by an item in the store and think "hey, girlfriend birthday present" (I know, I know, Diggers don't have girlfriends) but then forget about it a few days later. And snapping a picture is easier than trying to type in the info. Also, when my niece wants a "Little Dolly Wets Herself Supreme Awesome Version With Projectile Vomit" for Christmas it's much safer to take a picture of the actual item than to find yourself wondering days later did she want red hair or black hair on that doll?
And hey, if Amazon can couple that and give me their price for the same item, more power to them. - DanteDefiance, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4There's an app called SnapTell that does something similar...and it get's results in seconds. Granted it only works for pictures of Books, Video Games, and DVD's; but it works damn it! And a hell of a lot faster than 24 hours.
Also, it get's results FROM Amazon. How can a third party app search faster than Amazon themselves? - Munceenuts, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3I'm really curious now... what's the result?
- phatphil, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2From the iPhone app, "We also use a community of real people to research your photo and try to match it to a similar product on Amazon.com."
You win. - FuzzyCat, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2
USA only I'm afraid. - merlinxlr, on 12/04/2008, -1/+3I don't get these services. If I'm taking a picture of something, I can probably figure out what the ***** it is without Amazon's help.
- phrozted, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2First thing I did was to take a picture of my friend Evan. Amazon recommended that I buy Douche Cleanser. <3 Amazon
- RobotBuddha, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Are they saying it's an algorithm? As far as I know, it's through their mechanical turk program, so it literally is thousands of people doing it for about 0.10 cents per pic. Small change, but it builds up.
- RobotBuddha, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1For me, taking a pic is less a pain than navigating to their site on a slow connection, searching, etc. I've managed to freeze the phone a couple times dong that at a bookstore for some reason. Though I'd hope the js fixes in safari will put an end to it.
- freezerburn666, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1i'd do that job
- jgarland79, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1This is how it works:
http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-sf2p/v646/4 ... - RedGreen1, on 12/06/2008, -0/+1The pictures get posted to Amazon's service, Mechanical Turk, where humans can get paid to deal with them.
- musicmanryan, on 12/04/2008, -2/+3I apologize for not knowing how barcode readers work, but wouldn't it be possible to take a picture of the barcode and have them match it by scanning the picture? Other than that I agree with tim about just typing in the model number or manually going to amazon on your "mega-ultra-fast 3G iPhone" to compare prices.
- mpobri, on 12/04/2008, -1/+2woosh, that's the sound of a good idea rushing right on by you.
What if you're in a store with your kid/spouse and don't want to buy the thing right then. This is a handy way to remember. Or even better, you don't want to pay retail price for a book, snap a pic, buy the book later for cheaper. - diggerbez, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1I'm the nostalgia critic...
- jayhawk, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1depends on who it is easier for. for the user, it's hard to beat just snapping a quick photo as opposed to accessing the Amazon site and then searching for the product and then selecting it (if available). of course, that might be more instantaneous than waiting for a response from Amazon once your photo is sent.
i like just using the Google app with voice recognition. say the product name and the Amazon link is typically rated pretty highly in the results that come back. - sadilak, on 12/04/2008, -1/+2now for newegg
- tmike7223, on 12/04/2008, -1/+2Amazon MP3 Store direct download please. (Yeah I know it's unlikely because Apple wouldn't want to cannibalize iTunes)
- redwolf, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1Or the Australian one or, I'm guessing, anywhere but the US store. Sucky!
- timusca, on 12/04/2008, -1/+2Wouldn't it be easier to just go to amazon's site or app and type in the model number? While its cool (if it works), it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to wait for an email.
- chamblah, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1this way also allows you an easier way to do price comparison shopping using amazon.
- warki, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1"This item is not available in the German store"

totomix, sts, profesjonal typy - brentscheffler, on 12/05/2008, -0/+0Um. Call me crazy, but didn't the T-Mobile G1 launch with several barcode scanner apps that search the web for you and return not only internet based retailers but also retailers in your general area (if GPS is enabled?) within seconds?
- timusca, on 12/04/2008, -1/+1Amazon's mobile site loads much faster than it would take to send a photo out and receive an email.
- mikastefania, on 01/03/2009, -0/+0"This item is out of stock"WTF?
http://www.kaboodle.com/ontario_seed_bank - BrendanSheehan, on 12/04/2008, -2/+1The Amazon is already flooded with *****.
- Blackforge, on 12/04/2008, -5/+4Sounds like SnapTell, but it searches more than just Amazon. Of course it only works with Books, DVDs, Video games and Music. Maybe Amazon licensed the tech from them.
http://www.snaptell.com/ - timusca, on 12/04/2008, -2/+1I've tried the google voice app 5 times and couldn't get it to recognize anything... so I deleted it.
- Barackalypse, on 12/04/2008, -3/+1What does that have to do with my comment? I was suggesting people buy too much crap and a real certain indicator that you don't really need to buy something is if you need to take a picture of the item so you remember what it is later to buy.
- binorgog, on 12/04/2008, -7/+5I downloaded this app the second it came out, I don't think I will use it, but i do think i have an issue with downloading apps that don't use, just incase, better check my OCD meds.
- Barackalypse, on 12/04/2008, -5/+2If you can't even remember what the thing that you want is, I'm fairly certain you can call it an unnecessary purchase and just do without it.
- cmsjustin, on 12/04/2008, -8/+3Downloading right now
