- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27wow, you fail at life...
He is using a Windows virtual machine on an Intel Mac, in a mode that allows you to put Windows apps directly on your OS X desktop, and skinned them to look like native Mac apps..
But that is just based on me spending 5 seconds reading the description on the photo... - Jammypac, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17If you really do have to use XP through OSX, this seems like a mighty less painful pill to swallow.
- ketsugi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13@PrivateBob: You're missing the point and misunderstanding this completely. This *is* a Mac screenshot. He's running Parallels, a virtualisation software package, to run Windows programs, and used WindowsBlinds and an OS X theme to make the Windows programs look like the OS X programs he's running at the same time. You'll notice he has Apple Mail.app and Safari running in that screenshot.
- redDC143C, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Darwin, OSX's kernel, is unix derived. Is it then not possible to conceive a version of Parallels for linux?
The 1 thing I've heard people complain about time and time again about making the switch, is not being able to use Windows software. IMO, this would be *huge* for linux.
Thoughts? - eleven, on 10/12/2007, -17/+29Too bad you cant make the windows actually work better ;) Look pretty good though - I'm loving parallels. When I need to test IE it's so easy to launch from parallels.
- strazz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I want to second the Linux - Windows integration. I would switch to linux if I could just run Visual Studio 2005 inside it! Sorry Microsoft haters but no visual studio means no cash for me!
- ozid, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15There's no point in saying something like that. You think that one day Microsoft will adopt some fanboys of their own to give you +diggs? Because I don't see that ever happening.
I don't use a Mac, but if you think they are not as good as normal PC's in this day and age... Well that makes you naive, doesn't it? - mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18@7of7:
At the end of the day, I'm glad I switched to Mac. It's been an absolute dream, and that's coming from a longtime PC power-user. Macs are pretty good these days, get over it. - bitmeizer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Heh - I just noticed that Windows apps don't cast a shadow. Vampires?
But Parallels definitely rocks. I'll be getting it once I buy my new MacBook. - kajoob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10OK, for those of you who want to try it, I did some digging and "OSX Leopard Beta" seems to be the best OSX skin for WindowBlinds. You can d/l it here:
http://www.wincustomize.com/ViewSkin.aspx?SID=1&SkinID=5728&LibID=1 - kolanos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Since XP is running as a virtual machine in OSX, the answer is no.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7OS preference depends on what you do.
There really isnt one definitive OS.
For things like gaming, and for work (due to low costs), Windows is better.
For Home and school, OSX seems to work better.
I myself can do whatever i need with Windows, and i love my games. Windows is for me.
I also want a laptop for school, and I want a MacBook for that.
OS bashing is stupid and pointless. - cmost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I wonder if Parallels is going to integrate a "coherence" mode for other operating systems that can host Parallels. I would love to have Windows apps seamlessly appear on my Linux desktop. Anyone hear about any plans to do this? Everyone always focuses on Windows - Mac interoperability as if there aren't any other viable operating systems. I think this is a shame.
- cypherz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6To all who replied to "YES2007":
YES2007 is a troll, he set up this account to troll digg
From his profile:

Since 01/01/07 there have been a bunch of these troll accounts setup. FWIW, I'm not responding to anyone with a new account again.
Please don't feed the trolls! - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Why would you hate Windows?
Why not just get OSX and not care bout windows? - essjay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Only someone who's never used some of the absolutely amazing native OSX apps out there would say that. Its more likely that people will realise they can run that ancient Windows piece of accounting software (or whatever) on a Mac and make the switch. Windows apps, even under Parallels will still be Windows apps, so your not going to get the tight OSX integration along with Automator/Applescript, Growl and Quicksilver support.
- kyoung989, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I've been using WindowBlinds and the Aqua skin for quite some time and really love it.
When I complete "the switch" later this year, I'll have to try this out. - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They do not. Parallels is reportedly working on virtualizing video card acceleration but it can't do it yet.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -10/+15Maybe because not everyone thinks they are horrible?
- Gizmort, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Parallels video card operates in emulation at this point. But the Parallels team is developing so rapidly I would bet it won't be long until they get that going.
- chrislee149, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think the people who use WindowBlinds+Coherence want integration down to the x-+ buttons, though personally I would use a visual style as well. I heard that WindowBlinds 5 is not as bloated, but I've never used the product.
- bass0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Haha, that made me laugh.
(Too bad I can't digg myself down... I'd do that, for I know I'm just mean.) - Bamborzled, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4And I am under the impression that you didn't read the description.
He's running Windows XP and OSX applications at the same time with the Parallels Desktop "coherence" mode. The thing is, he's skinning the XP programs with an Aqua skin, so the WinXP and the OSX apps look identical.
And this wasn't a discovery, WTF are you talking about? - TomP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3UXTHEME.DLL hack could do this too?
- Sethwm2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was thinking about this. Wondered.. Does this mean that I can get viruses like the ones that know that they are running in vitalization and attack the mac hard drive because of running in coherence mode?
- Mk3890, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm impressed if this were to packaged with Mac OS so that it could run most Windows Apps seamlessly Apple could give Microsoft a serious run for their money.
- skoops, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Holy integration, Batman!
I was kinda tentative whether to buy a macbook or a macbook pro as my first mac. But the possibilities of running MacOS and Windows on the same machine at the same time without switching desktops or having to multiboot make me drool - and will most likely run better on the macbook pro - so yes... Right after Macworld (where they'll hopefully announce iLife '07) I'm gonna buy that nice piece of mobile computing power. - DaffyDuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No. Coherence mode is just virtualization without the desktop. It's still Windows running in a virtual machine as usual.
- Pixelated, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Yeah! When I finally get a Mactel, I definitely have to set this up.
- wdavis0911, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Have you tried the Uno theme?
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/19384
UNO derives from the Latin word for one.
UNO is the root of Unity.
UNO is a theme that brings the sunken unified toolbar/titlebar look & feel to every single window on your system (metal or aqua, and already unified windows as well).
On a higher level, UNO's main goal is to enhance aqua interface consistence, by making all elements look and feel as one.
UNO is aimed to those who want a clean and un-osbstructive interface while keeping the best of Aqua. The unity level proposed by UNO does not compromises overall GUI contrast: UNO and UNO shade can be mixed up in order to achieve that usability goal. - chrislee149, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@trghpy
Why would you need two docks, much less a Windows one that is not RKLauncher? - crawdad62, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well I have no reason (not yet at least) that I need to run Windows on my Mac but that's pretty slick. With what Parallels is doing it makes doing so for people that must use it to be a painless as possible.
I know if I used XP and wanted to run certain OSX apps and it was as seamless as that I'd think that would be slick too. No OS hate here. - chrislee149, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No, you're actually wrong. Visual styles cannot change the side of the x-+ buttons, as they merely reskin using Windows' default skinning engine.
- klausgonzalez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I very much doubt Leopard will have integrated Windows support; however, I do think Parallels should automatically skin Windows apps like this to make them look more Mac-integrated.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Works in CrossOver Office, though. Even with the GMA950 graphics chip set on the MacBooks
- m99stump, on 07/29/2008, -0/+3I would hardly call HL2 in Crossover "working"
Runs like ass on my iMac with X1600, and takes forever to load. HL1 and Dues Ex work though. - enharmonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yikes! Once I can virtualize my Windows games, I'm there. Dugg. Twice if I could.
- Rassa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why do I hear Macs rule, Windows sucks. Apple is awesome, Microsoft is the devil. Then said people get giddy over Parallels and Boot Camp. The hardware really must be amazing.
- Photoblog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://digg.com/apple/Make_windows_xp_look_like_OSX_Tiger_for_free_Works_well_with_parallels
A simple free way to make your windows xp look like a mac, please digg to share the open source! - Photoblog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The easiest way to do this is with a uxtheme patcher and kol's tiger skin for windows xp sp2
You can download the patcher and OSX Tiger skin for windows (with download and instructions)
http://www.studio7designs.com/studiotwentyeight.com_kols_graphics.cfm - jeriqo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3No, we're digging him down because his comment is useless.
- ioannusdeverani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, it is still really easy to see which apps are XP anyway (not because of the titles). The Windowblinds theme needs some work. I use an msstyle on my Windows desktop that looks better than the windowblinds one. It integrates better with Tiger. It is Tiger VS (http://www.getskinned.org/modules.php?modname=subs&action=moreinfo&subid=3249&type=1). Maybe that will work better... :)
Dugg, though - Karmavs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2if you want XP to run on a mac natively (IE: games at full speed) you can use BootCamp (free)
- enharmonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@me: Oops, I edited out the VM platforms I "mentioned" in my last post. They are VMWare Server, MS Virtual Server, and MS Virtual PC.
- enharmonix, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Yeah, looks like MS is about a generation behind here. I don't doubt they'll catch up w/ their next platform, but what will Apple be up to by then? P.S. I dugg your comment, I happen to like Vista too. As far as the bones go, OS X is probably stronger, but I also prefer the Aero interface. Fanboys must be digging you down. That sucks.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Blocked!
- xportz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is the skin used in the screenshot: http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/17625638/
- AceTracer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I only ever have one application visible at any given time, once again much like the classic Mac OS. If I switch to another application, it hides everything else. I only use Exposé within that one application to distinguish between different windows, such as in Photoshop.
As much as I think OS X was a huge step forward for Mac users, I also think in several ways it was a step back, and I dearly miss many of the classic Mac OS's features. - supermanred, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I dont like it, sorry. Nice that it all matches, but I like being able to look on my macbook's screen and know which app is from which OS just by the window style. This is really cool, and with 2 gb of ram works very well. Start bar on the bottom (windows xp) and the Apple menu at the top, with my dock hidden to the right.
Now I can pay Peggle in OSX... Dont know about Farcry though I will try... - enharmonix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@foolfromhell: What's really hilarious about this is that the VT trend will be toward more and more integration, so that chances are in the future, you won't be running just one OS, you'll simultaneously be running two, or three, or more. VT is extremely cool and makes OS flame wars even stupider than they were before. It is pretty ironic that people would flame about Mac vs. Windows in a *thread about virtualization*, where the whole thing matters least. Maybe they just like the shiny buttons. I dunno, but you're right -- it's more pointless than ever. Cheers.

What is Digg?
