- ccxftw, on 04/15/2008, -3/+65Ben Heck is the god of mods.
- smacksaw, on 04/15/2008, -2/+58He's created a portable Oregon Trail player!
- hit9ent, on 04/15/2008, -1/+46I'd love to see him mod a commodore 64 and a real life monkey.
- MacParrot, on 04/15/2008, -0/+34Except that it would weigh 15 pounds, sterilize an entire room during the boot process and only have 15 minutes of battery life
- martalli, on 04/15/2008, -1/+18Well, in some sense, the Apple ]['s were not macs.
- MacParrot, on 04/15/2008, -1/+16Can you actually be this dumb and still post on digg? You really don't realize that the Apple II was not a Mac?
- brstilson, on 04/15/2008, -0/+14with Battlechess!
- brstilson, on 04/15/2008, -0/+14The IIGS was really an amazing machine for its time. The thing had color and sound back in 1986 when most PCs were still stuck in the monochrome text-only world. Windows 1.0 was barely out of the gate. It was also the only computer Apple ever made to have an actual hardware synthesizer (A lawsuit from Apple records put an end to it).
- plizard, on 04/15/2008, -0/+12but will it play number munchers?
- Spuy767, on 04/15/2008, -0/+10Yup. Apple should pobably hire him. We'd end up with the MacPro Laptop.
- sambapati87, on 04/15/2008, -2/+12you could call it the MacBook Pro!
- franklymister, on 04/15/2008, -1/+9I'll take two!
- johneyoung, on 04/15/2008, -0/+7Ah, that brings back memories, my first computer was a IIGS. Not sure how useful this laptop is, but cool nonetheless.
- crazeduser, on 04/15/2008, -7/+13Too cool. But did he add any expansion cards for additional RAM or stereo sound or anything else besides the Compact Flash? Also from the screenshot it appears he's also not using the IIGS RGB output, resulting in a poor quality display using composite video. A shame. BTW if you want to know how to convert the 16khz sync RGB IIGS signal to VGA for connecting to a modern LCD screen, check here: http://www.maricondo.org
- gandhii, on 04/15/2008, -0/+6In all senses the apple2s were not macs.
- diggamatron, on 04/15/2008, -1/+7You have died of dysentery.
- JettaMan, on 04/15/2008, -0/+6He's just practicing for the day he does a Commodore mod. That one will be the king of all mods.
- a2fan, on 04/15/2008, -0/+5Pretty shallow of you -- what have you done thats better, or noteworthy?
- Mactrekr, on 04/15/2008, -0/+5And you're still a moron!
- franklymister, on 04/15/2008, -2/+6Right. Because the point of Ben Heckendorn's mods is usefulness.
- inactive, on 04/15/2008, -0/+4I already consider what he does art, but I'd love to see him, or someone with similar skills, do some much more abstract mods. Maybe that's not his thing though and his thing is already totally rad.
Regardless the man is a first class craftsman and it's great that he auctions stuff for charity. Bravo. - themastersb, on 04/15/2008, -0/+3Who?
- Mactrekr, on 04/15/2008, -1/+4Comments like yours are TRUELY useless.
- smacksaw, on 04/15/2008, -0/+3Hmm...too bad there was never a specific version of Archon for the //gs
Battle Chess damn...that and Falcon were games I played frequently via modem on the Amiga. - NesloTterrag, on 04/15/2008, -0/+3Apple IIGS FTW!!! my first real computer.
- ggko, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2Not a Mac, but back then some argued it was what the Mac "could've been." The IIGS featured color, sound, a GUI, and backwards compatibility for $1000. The Macintosh wouldn't get color until the following year and at 4x the price.
- Ogre73, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2I practically wore out our 3.5" floppy drive playing Oregon Trail. This is an awesome throwback.
Would only be sweeter if he could have retrofitted a 3.5" & 5.25" into the case... - mCanada, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2sorry for the caps but --BEN YOU NEED TO DO AN AMIGA 4000 LAPTOP!!!--- It was actually done way back in the day A500 I think , but it would be neat with today's tech.
- mercano, on 04/15/2008, -3/+5Well, for the ultimate in recursion he should go take it out and play Oregon Trail while on the Oregon Trail.
- GliTCH82, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2The man did a Heck of a job, really.
- robfitzonbass, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2Just like Vince Noir, he's the King of the Mods:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgPtHASe-L8 - Mactrekr, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2Depends on which train I suppose. The commuter from San Jose to say.... Palo Alto, I can see a bunch of ooohhhs and aaahhs.
- inactive, on 04/15/2008, -0/+2Minus the blogspam, straight to video and article.
http://benheck.com/04-14-2008/apple-iigs-original- ... - trer, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Ulp! I think I just...yep...I did....ahhhhhhhhh........
- thejitters, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1If I remember correctly, the IIGS was the first computer I ever used. This mod looks absolutely amazing, can't wait to see what he mods next.
- liljay2k, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1I "Hit the read link for tons more pics and a hot demo video" -- and i was disappointed by the lagness from the digg effect.
- webcrumb, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Psk... a monkey and pony mod, surely...
- Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1Heck of a job, Benny!
- MuskokasFinest, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1or Crys....errr...Crystal Quest?
- Cherubim, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1The Apple IIgs was the first Apple computer to feature a color GUI and the first to use Apple's ADB interface. A really neat 16 bit machine that could run about 98% of all the Apple // software in existence. Unfortunately, it was badly marketed by Apple and lacked a fast CPU.
- DBNKR, on 04/15/2008, -1/+2mirror of pics??
- norcalscan, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Now I can travel and actually find Carmen Sandiego, AND play Zork while on the plane
- aydoubleyou, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1"Fun fact - this computer has the same CPU as the Super Nintendo."
- habenneas, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1Fast text mirror: http://www.lynxcache.org/usr/1/Ben_Heck_outdoes_hi ...
- UsablePuddle, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1The real question is will it blend? ..............IIGS smoke dont breath that!
- cowsgoquack101, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1He does...
- viciouspictures, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1i miss my IIGS :( wish i had Space Quest and Maniac Mansion right now!
- FallenWings, on 04/15/2008, -1/+2Oh yeah, I'm sure they'll get right on that.
- OmegaWolf, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1That is so cool. I would seriously buy that laptop if it were for sale, just for the nostalgia looking at that GUI dredges up.
- inactive, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1but it's older than 6 months. useless.
