- valadares, on 11/03/2007, -4/+134OMG ! Finally!
Adium is going to be perfect. - unloud, on 10/29/2007, -2/+57...I was going to come here and try to make an insightful comment, but all I can say is "***** YEAH!!!!".
The Adium team rocks my purple-colored socks. - curiousgrge, on 10/29/2007, -2/+42That picture looks like Kevin Rose in 10yrs.
- Daveecee, on 10/29/2007, -2/+36If they fix file transfer, yes.
I STILL can't get direct connect and file transfers to work. - ChromaVita, on 10/29/2007, -2/+33This will keep me from ever switching over to iChat/Yahoo. Adium will be perfect.
- acbeck58, on 10/29/2007, -1/+31If I could just have Adium 2.0 right now I would be so happy.
- iofthestorm, on 10/31/2007, -1/+24This sounds great, even tho I'm a PC user I hope that their changes will get backported to Pidgin. I remember there was a fork of gaim 1.2 called gaim-vv that had video/voice support, and it was planned to be merged with Gaim 2.0 and then Pidgin, but that never really happened and now if you ask the Pidgin devs they just say it'll be done when it's done, stop bugging us or code it yourself. Adium is a much higher profile client and some of their changes got backported into a recent Pidgin release, so maybe this will encourage the Pidgin devs to integrate it.
- aburd, on 10/28/2007, -2/+25Whatever you do... don't read the article!
- Daveecee, on 10/28/2007, -1/+22You DO realize you can easily change the dock icon, right?
- Daveecee, on 10/28/2007, -0/+14Donate?
- lukebond007, on 10/28/2007, -1/+15OMG, I can't see my self ever using another MSN client once A/V is intergrated into Adium.
- joeycerone, on 10/28/2007, -4/+17Picture of this in action: http://adiumx.com/blog/uploaded_images/vvmockups/M ...
- pilot3033, on 10/28/2007, -2/+15I like Adium as much as the next guy, but part of me is too excited about the new iChat features in 10.5. I got to play with the screen sharing features, and iChat theater, and I must say... they're pretty impressive. The only real downside is no Yahoo! support, but I can live without that.
- unloud, on 10/28/2007, -0/+12No, I wear purple socks.
- monospaced, on 10/28/2007, -1/+13Yeah, but unless I can chat with my friends who still use MSN, Yahoo, as well as the newer gmail chat, iChat works with only half of my friends.
- iofthestorm, on 10/31/2007, -0/+11Yup, I was right, after RTFAing (lol) I found the part where they said that they've been working with Sean Egan and the other Pidgin devs on integrating voice/video into libpurple and that there's already a development branch that has it. Nice!
- Naga10, on 10/28/2007, -1/+12People use whatever the people they want to talk to use. I'd rather use GTalk, but since all my friends are on MSN, I'm forced into MSN.
- Skootles, on 10/28/2007, -3/+14So does this mean we'll finally be able to use audio and video when signed in to our MSN accounts?
- inactive, on 10/31/2007, -0/+10Adium is what Pidgin should be.
- lukebond007, on 10/31/2007, -1/+10This is like the best IM client on the planet imo, and I've been waiting to stop saying "cant go on cam, on the mac" YAY
- AirRaven, on 10/28/2007, -1/+8Aye.
The majority of Western Europe does, actually. - abandonedhero, on 10/28/2007, -0/+7Skype is a proprietary protocol. Unless someone can reverse engineer it, you'll never see it in a third-party client.
- boldfire, on 10/28/2007, -2/+8Perfect 2.0
- SimonGray, on 10/28/2007, -1/+7Adium is based on Pidgin's libpurple (libgaim), which is already used in Pidgin on all three platforms.
- Mejogid, on 10/28/2007, -0/+6Unfortunately, that's just a mockup... there's still a way to go.
- setrusko, on 10/28/2007, -1/+7Adium rocks.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -1/+6When I found out you can use a gmail account with it.. yeah.
- 2shae, on 10/28/2007, -1/+6Most people in the world use MSN.
Only in the US they use something different.
And maybe a few in the UK use YAHOO - darkfate, on 10/28/2007, -0/+4Adium is built on libpurple, but it doesn't use GTK as the interface. I assume it uses coco (?)
- Ellipsys, on 10/28/2007, -1/+5I'm most interested in these changes coming to Pidgin. I'd also really like to have access to options like Yahoo photo sharing, or at least a photo browser with thumbnails.
- boredzo, on 10/27/2007, -0/+4Personal messages are coming, once the Pidgin team finishes implementing the newest version of the MSN protocol (P14) and we integrate the changes and make any needed UI changes. I *think* P14 also brings direct file transfers, but I'm not sure, so don't quote me on that.
Currently, libpurple (the library Pidgin and Adium use to support MSN and other protocols) use a very old version of the MSN protocol, which is why FTs have to go through the server and personal messages aren't supported at all. - patho, on 10/28/2007, -2/+6you wear purple socks?
- BHSPitMonkey, on 10/28/2007, -0/+4Adium is the Cocoa client of libpurple. Pidgin is the GTK client, finch is the CLI client, etc...
Same IM backend, multiple GUIs. - tracydanger, on 10/27/2007, -0/+4Actually, the sample pic they show ( http://adiumx.com/blog/uploaded_images/vvmockups/M ... ) makes me think they may have multiple people per video chat because it shows the guy in a window inside a black area with a reflection below him. If you were just chatting one-on-one, this would be totally pointless, but it makes sense to have that interface with more than two people.
- PeachCobbler, on 10/28/2007, -1/+5or perhaps it was a reference to libpurple :P
- monospaced, on 10/28/2007, -1/+5I stand corrected. Thanks for the adiumextras link.
- dyranios2, on 10/28/2007, -1/+4Well yo mamma wasn't available.
- mithi, on 10/28/2007, -1/+4svn co svn://svn.adiumx.com/adium/branches/adium-2.0-vv/
- shanal, on 10/28/2007, -0/+3its iffy at times, but i would say my file transfer works about 75% of the time. Still room for improvement of course, but I honestly have no complaints about its success rate on aim. Could be a problem specific to your set-up..
- realityiswhere, on 10/28/2007, -1/+4"Cocoa Bindings, Carbon, Quartz, Core Foundation, and Search Kit, among other APIs" (directly from the website), and these aren't available in GNUstep, which is why they "can't" port it to *nix.
- 5Twelve, on 10/28/2007, -0/+2That dude doesn't seem to have the whole home folder thing down yet.
- Kakcoo, on 10/29/2007, -0/+2What's up with the reflection coming towards the screen?
- Jakerius, on 10/28/2007, -0/+2I'm guessing you haven't been enlightened by Pidgin/Adium yet.
- Surkow, on 10/31/2007, -1/+3This means other projects that use libpurple (like pidgin) will get audio and video support as well.:D
- boomybx, on 10/28/2007, -4/+6When are the Windows and Linux versions coming out? I tried Adium once on Mac and liked it!
- blackjack75, on 10/28/2007, -0/+2I just wished they'd go with skype protocol support. Yes, I know it requires severe reverse-engineering but others have done it already. I use skype daily at work for voice-calls with my colleagues, most of which are running PCs, and I have to have the heavy skype in the background just for that while Adium fills all my other needs (I.M. speaking).
iChat is nice but it's mac only which means I just have no-one (work related) to use it with. - roberto_deneero, on 10/31/2007, -0/+2This is the one drawback to open source. Money has a funny way of motivating people to do stuff more..uhhhh...timely shall we say?!
- ballagarba, on 10/28/2007, -1/+3The only two things i really want is that they fix file transfer and implement personal messages (MSN).
- MonkeyFarts, on 10/28/2007, -0/+2Yes, but given my experience they mostly suck, and are a real pain in the ass to set up (if you're an average computer user, that is).
- boredzo, on 10/28/2007, -0/+2If you're using the AIM service, make sure you have port 5190 open on your router, NAT, firewall, cable modem, or DSL modem. You'll need it open for incoming connections to send and outgoing connections to receive (yes, that is the right way round: the recipient connects to the sender).
