Adium Project Manager - digg-dugg, on 10/12/2007, -21/+3GRREAT! the new update killed my message style! thank chirs!!
*Dont worry I think i found ONE that looks good out of the whole bunch of crap from the site. But why did you remove the only one that looks half good from the new build? - be11o, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Or should that be QUACK!
- wdfjxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I wish they had adium for windows, no other messaging client compares to it's sleek and easy to use interface. It's perfect
- TheRealToma, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1@Chirs
Couldn't you collaborate with the developers of aMSN to get the MSN video+audio protocol supported?
And in return, make a linux build :D
- DanTekGeek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+58Congrats Chris, Evan and team!
- zachlutz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26Thank you all for creating such a brilliant program. I even switched my mom over today. :)
- saggygrandma, on 10/12/2007, -65/+8And had your way with her?
- zachlutz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14No, ass. BTW, she loves the program. She's already been installing Xtras on her own.
- alamandrax, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3dugg for the ease of joke creatability of that line. priceless
(yes it's a word. it's like truthiness).
- periphium, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Well done, guys. It's been a long journey, but you know it's been worth it.
- Vironex, on 10/12/2007, -26/+5It's just software, man...
- airmann90, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@Vironex
It's never 'just' software, man.

List of changes. :)- SirG3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22OMFG! How the hell did they add 200% more cowbell!? Perhaps consulting the Vorlon helped?
- gwalbridge, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5hahahaha "Now with 200% more cowbell"
EDIT: beaten to it, sorry. - sxtxixtxcxh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1:D i just noticed that as well, and came in with "Now with 200% more cowbell" on the clipboard.
- Velireon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Mmmmmm ... Vorlons. :-)
- tamarok, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"OMFG! How the hell did they add 200% more cowbell!? Perhaps consulting the Vorlon helped?"
I really don't know, but that is just calling for a cow oriented sound set :D volunteers? - variant, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I was using the beta version of Adium 1.0 for quite sometime a couple months back and switched back to .89.1 because I was getting huuuuuge memory leaks with the switch to joscar instead of gaim. I ended up going back to 1.0 around b14 or so once I found out the problem was fixed.
Let's just hope "200% more cowbell" isn't a euphemism for the return of all those memory leaks. :) - mrfx2, on 10/12/2007, -28/+3NO AUDIO OR VIDEO ???????????? WOULD SOME ONE TELL THEM ITS 2007!

- Spampy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Man, this is like, so exciting. I likes it.
- iPontus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Absolutely insanely great"
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9latest 1.0 beta was working great for me, looking forward to installing the real thing :p
- bleonard, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2YES!!!!!!!!!!111!!!1!1!1
- Capta1nA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the betas were really great, i was wondering when they'd finally call one of them the final version.
- detrate, on 10/12/2007, -18/+4Once again... good news for Mac users but bad news for us Windows folks :(
- JacNet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Correction:
"but bad news for us Linux folks" - tamarok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Ah, but at least the Gaim developers get lots of encouragement and incentive :) The libgaim code is an important part of Adium.
- JacNet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Correction:
- DEIx15x8, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Wow, this thing has been around and solid for so long that i never realized it was still beta.
- sqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Sweet!! I''ve been having trouble with file transfers so hopefully this fixes it!
- greymarketbrain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Sarcasm>
Something of quality and rock solid usability that Phil Ryu didn't create? IMPOSSIBLE
End Sarcasm>- iLux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Stupid statement, but Phill Ryu has been one of the Adium Code Contributors a long time ago…
- iLux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry I am wrong, he did just do some feedback and testing :)
- citrusfizz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3now if they would just get a utorrent equivalent for the mac...
screw azureus- jake57, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Transmission for now......utorrent for Mac is being developed right?
- crimsonmac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If only. . .
Last I heard, both the Linux and Mac OS X projects were scraped. Transmission's a clean program, but it doesn't work well on all networks. In addition, it doesn't encrypt traffic :( - Capta1nA, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2xtorrent works very well.
- viniciusfontes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well, it's not as good as uTorrent, but a good option is Transmission.
http://transmission.m0k.org/ - Firanide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I use http://www.bitrocket.org/
Still buggy, because it's in beta, but it's an awesome program.
Haven't seen any updates in a while though, unfortunately. - jmreid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nothing compares to uTorrent's RSS feed reader. I'd love to see something like it on the Mac side.
It's perfect for a headless server to grab the latest TV shows without any interaction.
- mikev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8When I first got my mac, I thought adium was great. I loved the customizability and everything about it.
Then I gave iChat a second chance, and have really never looked back since. It's a lot more stable than Adium, and also allows you to video + audio conference :D- teunit48, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5i would personally love to use ichat. but adium works better with msn-messenger. all my friends use msn.
- Velireon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You're not the target audience if you only use the AIM network. Many of us have diverse friends on diverse networks -- Adium puts them all in one client for us, which iChat doesn't even think about doing.
- jake57, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3While it is true that iChat is great for video + audio chatting, when I want to do a video chat, I set my status to offline in iChat and use Adium for all IM purposes. As for the stability, ichat, for me, crashes fairly often, while Adium is rock solid.
- spiffyfitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10If you're like me and only ever use AOL's network, then I recommend iChat with the Chax plugin. Otherwise, Adium is the only worthwhile IM client on Mac OS X.
- Dog_Paddle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Since I only use MSN, I use aMSN. It has everything the client for windows has, which Adium doesn't. I used Adium for a long time
- MrBrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Same for me, I was an Adium user a long time ago, tried iChat, never looked back.
I use AIM, MSN and Jabber daily, and all that with iChat. Plus iChat can do a lot more than Adium (video conference, of course, but also display a picture or even a whole PDF document in the chat window).
Actually, the next big thing I'm definitely waiting for is the implementation of the Jingle Audio/Video protocol in IM applications.
- matperk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was just thinking this morning when it said beta 42 was available that it was about time they launched.
- macbwizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The Sparkle update engine is one of the best new features in my opinion.
- GrandmasterB, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1aboot, favourite, etc.
don't forget Canadian Bacon (aka Ham)
- GrandmasterB, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1aboot, favourite, etc.
- Slipknotic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I looked at their site and only have one queston; What the ***** is Canadian english?
- dcipjr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Eh?
- bbkingadrock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12"centre", "colour", etc.
- dohidied, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Canadians have some British spellings and some American spellings.
- GrandmasterB, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Canadian Bacon (aka Ham)...just add canadian or a u to any word.
- bbhh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1..anyone know how to switch it to canadian english... im sick of being told i spelt words wrong wheni didn't, i spell enough words wrong.
- tumbleweed05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1great app. it was just super slow on my mini. wonder if i should give this another shot.
- StarManta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Really? I've used Adium for years across 3 Macs, and even on the slowest of them it was very zippy.
- monkeyrun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Nice, I've been using it for so long that I didn't remember it's beta all along.
- Luigi239, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yay!
Ive been using the beta for a while, and it has been great.
Awesome to see the finnished product! - KingLeo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Adium was the first app I downloaded when I got my Macbook Pro last year :)
- mortapotty, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0duplicate post :|
- mortapotty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Congrats on 1.0 guys! Here's to a smoother path to 2.0 :)
- Frankie4Fingers, on 10/12/2007, -19/+1Was there never a program like trillian for apples? If not, then that is lame.
- zenwhen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This application has been around in pre-1.0 form for a long time.
- nick2354, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10this does everything trillian does and more... and its free. its a lot better in my opinion.
- Luigi239, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is a major upgrade to the Adium app, which has been around for many years. It does mostly everything Trillian can, and more. There are also 2 other major Trillian-like apps, Fire, and Protus. But most mac users agree, Adium is best.
- clm100, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Uh, this is like Trillian for Mac. And a lot better. Soooo much better.
- pkulak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12This is just like Trillium except it doesn't take about 5 minutes to load.
- zenwhen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+37Adium is without a doubt the best IM application on any platform.
- cphuntington97, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The "Sort Buddy List By Availability, Ignoring Groups" setting is so useful if you have a ton of buddies but just want to see who is online.
I would move all my buddies into one group to get this functionality on gaim, but:
* I'm afraid of forgetting where everyone is from
* When you move a buddy from one group to another, the "buddy info" disappears :- - streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Adium is what happens when you have a dedicated team of open source devs, smart interface designers, a healthy community, and a solid and usability-centered OS to work in.
I'm having trouble thinking of another app whose 1.0 release has come this close to pure, untarnished perfection.
Congrats to the team!
- cphuntington97, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The "Sort Buddy List By Availability, Ignoring Groups" setting is so useful if you have a ton of buddies but just want to see who is online.
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16This app helped to keep me on the Mac. I love it. I love it. I love it. I can't say enough good things about it.
Windows users: It's like gaim... but a million times better.- streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Longtime Gaim users:
Imagine the first distro of Linux you ever used, then imagine Ubuntu.
That's what the difference between Gaim and Adium is like. It may be similar tech underneath, but it's just amazing how far they've taken it in terms of usability, configurability, and just plain classiness. As both a Mac and Linux user, I hope someday to see Adium ported! - DOGPARTY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8impossible to port it, relies to much on Mac OS X technologies.
However it would be great if Linux developers could really learn something from it about how to design an interface, and I don't mean Beryl style gaudy flashyness :) - streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agreed about Beryl... It's absolutely great to have a compositor on Linux, but now let's use it for subtle, classy stuff instead of fireballs and particle storms!
- streetstealth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Longtime Gaim users:
- nick2354, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1lol too bad the website crashed.
- econoar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5no it didn't
your lol just crashed
- econoar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5no it didn't
- ScottyDontKnow, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4webcam support ?
- Luigi239, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2No, because the makers of adium said that they would need dedicated webcam servers and such to make video chat work. I dont really care, because I never use video chat. And if I do, I just go into iChat.
- KingLeo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Webcam support would complete Adium as the best AIM software ever. For now I use iChat which is amazing for video chat... Skype which just released a new version that supports video chat on the Mac (very good quality), and if you wanna video chat with MSN users you can download Millenium which it's crappy quality (MSN video chat sucks).
Adium however has a lot of very nice features like encrypted chat only one click away, etc, etc. - dragazis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4for information on voice and video chat please take a look at the wiki page on this here http://trac.adiumx.com/wiki/VoiceAndVideo
- seanm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Congrats, nice to see a bunch of my feature requests in there.
Great job, Adium rocks. - DvS01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Works perfectly - awesome.
- sporrow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Finally! And all the Xtras still work!
I'm ecstatic. - theporchmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7love, peace and adium :)
- pfeester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If only video chat would come...can't find a decent way to video chat with a Windows user from my Mac...the closest and best thing is Sightspeed. But, for my meat-and-potatoes IM needs, it's Adium all the way. Great proggie! thanks!
- caketank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Skype's video is outstanding. It's only two-party, though.
I keep Skype around for the occasional voice and/or video call, but Adium is what runs all day.
- caketank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Skype's video is outstanding. It's only two-party, though.
- AHemp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hooray! I just updated it but I'm still wading through the changes...
- marcushe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, finally. Adium definitely is the best IM app there is.
However, it really shows just how slow open source projects are. Adium X has been in development for YEARS - since OS X 10.2 - and its finally hit...1.0.- nonregulator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@marcushe, I don't really think its fair necessarily to argue that just because they've only just reached 1.0 that open source programs develop slowly. They decide their own increments of advancement. Adium has been a very functional and great program for years with out reaching 1.0. The reason it tends to take so long a lot of the time in my opinion is because the developers feel like they need to make a 1.0 release really stand out. With non open sourced programs, a lot of the time you only get updates that always jump up at least an entire version number whether or not they deserve it or not.
- moralec, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2just GREAT!
- brewno2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Fantastic news. Now Wikipedia needs updating :)
- vh1`, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3can it view MSN status messages yet? I downloaded RC1 this morning and it still couldn't. I thought this was one of the new things introduced in GAIM 2.0/libgaim
- homestar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Awesome news! I've been using the betas, and have grown more and more happy with the program with every beta release. Glad to see 1.0 has finally made it out--go download it if you can--it's awesome!
- mrfx2, on 10/12/2007, -19/+1WERE THE F@CK IS THE VIDEO AND AUDIO>>>>>>WAKE THE F@CK UP!

- DOGPARTY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Finest IM client on the market! Massive fan even from the days when it was just an AIM client.
- movethefloor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not to whine, because this new version looks amazing, but is it just me or does sending folders still not work? great to see individual files working, but folders are hugely important too!
- muuhgnoo, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1No IRC support is what makes adium worthless.
From the website:
> IRC and instant messaging are very different paradigms.
> For the present and forseeable future, Adium will focus only on instant messaging.
Which is pure *****. Instant Messaging is IRC with the channel feature dropped for "security reasons". They have Jabber support, which also includes chat rooms. Yahoo, MSN and AIM also featured chat rooms at some point of time, and the Windows ICQ client has support for IRC. An messaging client supporting everything out there but dropping _only_ IRC deliberately and by design should not be worth your support.
***** Adium.- theamazingboo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2or you could, you know, use an actual irc client.
- muuhgnoo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Adium could, you know, just implement the IRC protocol and _be_ that "actual irc client" very easily. As easily as they support all the other messaging protocols. But they for some reason won't, and try to foist this lame excuse about "different paradigms".
Its just ***** to try to be an "all in one" client, and then deliberately exclude one wildly popular system for no reason. - chirs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, we're holding off until our group chat implementation is better.
- boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"""
Instant Messaging is [just] IRC with the channel feature dropped for "security reasons".
"""
Not so. Speaking as both an Adium developer and somebody who actually knows the IRC protocol, I can tell you that there are features in IRC that absolutely require extra UI to in order to do IRC support right. These include topics, modes, and kicks, and those are just the common protocol-defined features.
We can't just flip a switch and say we have IRC support—yes, you could connect to IRC and chat, but you wouldn't notice when anybody changed the mode or topic or kicked somebody. I've used a client that omitted that information (Global Chat), and trust me, it sucks. Seriously, I'd rather use telnet to access the IRC server.
There actually is an IRC plug-in in our trunk, using libgaim's IRC support, which Evan has used from time to time to access the Adium IRC channels. But it's not ready for the users because it doesn't have the *UI* support for those IRC-specific features. And we won't ship it until it's ready. - otomo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Couldn't you just hook the extra info into the growl plugin? EG: topic changes get sent to growl for notification.
Would work for most users, although history could be an issue. Another semi easy way to solve that is to just push the information into a pseudo user. Then if you need it you can dig though the old messages just like you do with regular chat.
My 2cents, if my objective c was any better I would give it a go myself. - boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2otomo: Sure, we could just use Growl for it, but you wouldn't be able to look back over the message view and see when that topic change happened. And you still couldn't look at the topic bar or mode line to see what the current topic/mode is. And there's also the problem that not everybody knows how great Growl is yet. :)
Growl isn't a total solution to this. (Obviously, we would have topic-change, mode-change, and kick events in the Events prefs, each one hooked up to a Growl action.) IRC support will need IRC-specific UI in Adium itself for this to be done Right. - abhibeckert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2IRC topic changes could be displayed the same way as "jeff went away" is now.
I imagine the real problem with adding IRC to adium is the fact that you're dealing with ~80 people contributing to a chat, which requires a more compact UI and support for notifying the user when they're mentioned, etc.
- stickittothemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Has anyone else here checkout out PROTEUS? how would you compare the two?
- mbadolato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I bought Proteus back in the day. It rocked, and Adium wasn't there yet. Since then, Adium has become unbelievable, and Proteus died (about 2 years ago). Oh, they claim version 5 is still being developed. They claim they're making the source available. But no one is working on it. Every time someone says "soon!" months go by with no change, then someone says "soon!". Lather, rinse, repeat. They released a very minor point release a couple of months back. First time in close to two years and didn't really do anything much.
Proteus was great, but now its totally dead. Everyone has moved away. Adium is where its at. - Guitarzan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am (was?) a loyal Proteus user, but ya, basically it's dead. Now I'm tempted to download and maybe switch to Adium... at least untill Proteus 5 comes out.

- dwdavey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1"MUST GET VIDEO OR CHAT TO BE THE KILLER APP!"
agreed.. i know it's really pushing it, but skype support would rock, too. i love my adium, but i could love it so much more. - datakid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Still no ability to save group chats! arg!, so annoying!
- muuhgnoo, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Oh well, they deliberately limit group chat support, for some ***** reason. They also completely ignore IRC. Just use another client and do not support them in their effort to "root out" group chats.
- boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3We're not trying to "root out" group chats. We just want to do them right, and we've picked out a specific release for *all* of our major group-chat fixes. We may accept a patch before then, but 1.5 is when we're going to throw our own energy into it.
Just be patient. :) - datakid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11.5? damn, that's bold, since you only just released 1.0
- boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I didn't say it'd be soon. :)
We have at least 1.1 and 1.2 to do before we get to 1.5. So it's not going to happen soon. But it will happen.
- zerock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well i like adium, best im client for mac there is, waiting for a few features which hopefully will be out by 1.1, but still its the best. it lets me use im and work, comfortably on my IT stuff.
- MonkeyFarts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sweet! I love the new features. The auto-hiding of the contact list/message windows when Adium is in the background is simply awesome, as is the custom shortcut to bring Adium to the front. I love it! Unfortunately, though, I've found two things that don't seem to work:
1. There's an option to allow you to see your buddies' custom emoticons in MSN, but they never come through for me
2. Setting your status to iTunes does not work (according to the buddies of mine I asked).
Overall though, this is a fantastic release. This is truly the best chat client I've ever seen on any platform, and it's nice to see its continued development/releases.- boredzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You need to turn the custom emoticons on. (They're supposed to be on by default, but for some reason that isn't working.)
