- santi77, on 10/11/2007, -3/+106This is called ease of use
- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -14/+65This daily media whoring is getting ridiculous. And I LIKE Apple...
- eneshelon, on 10/11/2007, -6/+52this was totally a smart move on apple's part, it eliminates all the frustration and lingering going on after the purchase! the 1:20 stampede ratio will definitely go down now.
- snipes, on 10/11/2007, -5/+37Smart move.
Get ready for iTunes 8.
Or at least 7.5 :-/ - mhenstell, on 10/11/2007, -3/+35"iPhone will require a new two-year AT&T service plan. Customers with existing AT&T accounts will have the option of keeping their existing phone number and upgrading their account to work with iPhone, Apple added."
- HappyScrappy, on 10/11/2007, -6/+37So this means it'll be much easier to buy one at launch and eBay it than was previously expected.
- FutueTeIpsum, on 10/11/2007, -11/+38wow... The iPhone in Apple's activation video has a 74.40GB capacity!

- guytoronto, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21I don't know how it is in the US, but up here in Canada, not everyone is approved for a cellular activation (due to really sucky credit).
What happens to the iPhones that people buy, get home, open up and manhandle, then can't activate for whatever reason? - gungaroo22, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14I wish Apple would alter this product into a small tablet PC / palm pilot, so you could get similar features for no monthly fee.
(of course no phone calls, but Safari, maps, and Email - if you're at a hot spot. ) - knelto, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12I've activated one phone from Sprint, and it wasn't as easy as this looks doing it through iTunes. I had to call Sprint's customer service, wait, wait longer, then get walked through a process of getting the phone ready to be activated by doing some weird key sequence and giving a hex (or decimal I can't remember) ESN number to them, and then wait 2 hours before I could actually use it.
This looks easier. - titlesaysitall, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8You can pop in your SIM card and activate your iPhone WITH NO COSTS ASSOCIATED. However, you can tack on more to your plan if you want.
- riddlebox, on 10/11/2007, -4/+11Looks like good marketing on Apple's part. Try to get their product to the media and they will direct it to new stations to where it gets even more publicity plus a bonus as its FREE marketing. That is if us as Americans can get past the "Paris Hilton out of Jail" section of the news...
- stealthboy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8I thought it was common knowledge by now that AT&T is the exclusive carrier for the iPhone for the next five years. Of course we all want additional carriers, but it won't happen any time soon. Sorry.
Although, with Digg's new and improved threading, nobody will open this reply to read it anyways. Why should we bother replying to comments, again? - atrain15, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10This is great. Dealing with cell phone store employees is about the least fun thing I can think of.
You gotta figure this is partially how Apple was able to convince AT&T to let them into the business. I'm sure Steve told them how many employees they could eventually get rid of if people just did this crap themselves. To a big company like AT&T, fewer employees is about the only way to save money. They couldn't resist the lure and now Jobs and Co. have their foot in the door.
Genius, actually. - dsendecki, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9Only apple? I own a FIDO phone in Canada and have been activating my phones at home since the mid-90s.
- ronmexico, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8This same stuff happens when a new game console is released. Do you complain about that as well?
- pnmoore, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Dude, I have been buying smartphones for years, have always bought them on the web and had them shipped to me, then activated them on the Verizon website by changing my service from my previous phone to the new one using the EIN and my phone number...this is not something new! AND they have been Windows Mobile devices...Apple and AT&T didn't INVENT some great new way of activating phones.
- ZennZero, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8Come on now, lets not resort to calling one another derogatory names. His "preferences" are nothing to be ashamed of.
Oh, *FLAG* - with an L. Right. - jaybienweb, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9Wha..what? What is this iPhone that you speak of??? Gee whiz, it sounds swell!!
- Morky, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6This one is actually news, because, in the US at least, it's a new way of buying a cell phone.
- paulvcarter, on 10/11/2007, -5/+10This is ***** huge! This will significantly add to the take up of the phone, I was planning to wait a month or so but as I can now order online and set up from home I will now get one. Other carriers will need to follow this.
- djdole, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I wonder what exactly they mean by "upgrading their [existing] account"?
IMO,It could be interpreted as customers can add the required features to make the iPhone work with their existing plan (ie, Add a $20 unlimited data package to a 29.99 grandfathered plan = $50/month iPhone service), or customers can chose a NEW plan from the three offered above.
Though I doubt it would fly, it would be awesome if the prior was the case. - calebac09, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6I can't wait to get my 74.40GB iPhone like the guy from the demonstration video! 12.55GB of Other? How many Bookmarks and Contacts does this guy have?
- Daveecee, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Seriously, what is up with this? Just a mistake, or a sign of things to come?
- badulescub, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5This allows the stores to sell faster ... well thought !
- hove, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4yeah it looks good, they should publicise this iPhone.
- tripm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Friday evening at 6 PM: I imagine all Apple and AT&T Stores will look like the Dr. Seuss Cartoon about Star Bellied Sneetches
- mentor972, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3LOL, they changed it already.
- zioxide, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Whenever there is an iPod/nano/shuffle/atv product thats new, iTunes always gets an update. The employees that already have their phones are probably just running the new version already.
- calgone, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The video said something about "enter your social security number that was previously used at the AT&T store" or something like that so maybe they do the credit checks at the ATT and Apple stores?
- Ireland, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It hasn't been announced yet
- ChrisJP, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Wow, buying a "cell phone" in America seems like a huge hassle. Can't you just normally buy a phone, take it home and do what you want... activate it in your own time? Does each store have some special facility to "activate" a phone or something?
Sorry, but I just don't understand what makes this news. - brainded, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Guess what? So did my new Verizon enV. WTF is so special about activating at home. Has AT&T never had this before???
- chrisutley, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3How the heck could Apple "steal" activation from the Zune? The Zune isn't a phone ... geesh.
- stealthboy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4It's part of the activation process. It's in the video...
- haggie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Wow, remote activation! That's almost as cutting edge as a touchscreen!
Apple Fanboi Spam - bedspring, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5it has an option to allow you to transfer your number from another carrier from home.
- Squidly, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4No. You cannot use it without activation.
- dragon76, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Other carriers don't embed the SIM in their phone. It's all in the SIM and not the phone, unless you are using ass backwards CDMA phones.
- kil0byte, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5We need more service providers!!!!!!!!!!!! that, if it isn't already, will be the number one request for future rev's of this product.
- ibeetle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I was going to say the same thing.
This is nothing new. I have bought 3 cell phones online and all three were self activated by me from home. Some mobile phone carriers even have the instructions for customers on their web site. - flycatcher, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'm not quite so sure about this eneshelon. I do have my reservations. What I mean is that if you had to activate the phone in-store, then you'd be more likely to purchase even more iStuff. Just imagine the volume of ppl in those stores, just itching to purchase, almost anything Apple. I'm sure the smart marketing folks at Mr. Job's company could up sell other product lines. Don't want a phone? How about iTV, it's just as enabling.
- chicagobiker, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Ahhh, well I guess that answers it, part of the purchase process then is going to be setting up the contract before they sell it to you, then you take the box home and activate the phone later.

- gasmanic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3but you have time to Digg -- shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees!
- Davey78, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2If you currently have an AT&T Voice Plan, you get to keep that plan (if you wish) and upgrade it by adding the Data plan.
- lukee, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3yes it is
