the "i'm not digging this" crowd cracks me up - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5electricsheep.org

- PlancksCnst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's not a screensaver, but if you have Winamp, open "linein://", and the visualizations will react to your mic. I did this for a concert once. I had my own little mixing board, so i could increase say, the bass drum in the mix to make it follow the beat better. On solos, I would increase the volume on that instrumnet. It's pretty fun stuff.
- Illuminatus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agree with first post. Electric Sheep is the prettiest screensaver I've ever seen. Open source so it runs on my Windows, Ubuntu and OS X boxes.
- fideli, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@nate007: So did you think there would be replacement Windows screensavers in an article about OS X screensavers? A possible replacement Windows screensaver IS OS X.
- craigtheguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I second electricsheep.org, but for the winter I prefer SnowSaver.
- conigs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You should pop open this thing in Quartz Composer. The node tree is amazing. I'm surprised he didn't use more macros.
- DJPandemonium, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Most tech / geeks / coders are buying Macs."
We are?
How did you come to that conclusion? - runninmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well isnt this just the "we hate the Mac thread"?
Please if you arnt "diggin" something just dont comment. Not everyone cares if you have a XP machine or Mac - hibern8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Remotely related ... Quartz ... CoreImage ...

Free image application with a massive variety of CoreImage filters. - chiizu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you like this screensaver, but don't have a mic or anything, and want it to be generally interesting, give mine a try.
http://killdead.org/chiizu/?p=13 - cerealrat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hell yeah, electricsheep is the best. This is cool too, I guess.
- Rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd like to see this for audio out, rather than audio in. That'd be awesome.
- PCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey everyone, thanks for the diggs and the comments. Just so you know, I wasn't aiming to replace anything (I didn't even think of Flurry as I created it), this was just one of those fun things to play around with...
As far as using more macros, have you looked at version 1.3? I realized the composition was getting to be a little crowded sometime earlier this week.
You really should try it out to see how cool it is; screenshots don't do it justice. =)
Like other people have said, I doubt this will be portable to Windows. There's no actual "code" involved. Apple would have to take care of porting QC and the frameworks if that were to happen.
I'd love to improve Soundstream, so shoot me emails and let me know what you'd like to see! The 3D rotation in 1.3 is the result of someone's suggestion and I think it turned out nicely. - manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My personal favorite screen saver is Helios from the "Really Slick Screen Savers" package - can't remember the site, though, but it's gorgeous. It's not sound reactive, though.
- abhibeckert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Too bad the Mini doesn't have a microphone or even a microphone port"
Macs only accept digital mics. The PowerMac is the only mac with a mic port, but the digital plug is a slightly different shape, and you can't use most mics with your powermac. If you have a mac, you need a USB mic. - vonskippy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How would it react to this sound... ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
- perfect13thstep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"'Most tech / geeks / coders are buying Macs.'
We are?
How did you come to that conclusion?"
I was wondering the same thing... Most techies I know still use Windows or Linux. The only people I know that use Macs are actually the less tech savvy who just do the basics and graphic designers (who often fit under the "less tech savvy" label outside of their Adobe suite). - julieomg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow. i've been a dedicated flurry user since the day i got my powerbook over 3 years ago and this just blew my mind. the reaction to sound is astonishing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1seƱor beavis! donde esta tu hall pass?
nice find. - hyperpasta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its pretty cool. The visuals aren't great, but rhis has proved for me that sound sensitivity is more than a gimmick. +digg
- jman420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am also a big fan of electricsheep. Great fun.
- ndm007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No way near as good as Flurry.
- j.carcinogen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0digg rss screensaver: http://img489.imageshack.us/img489/9725/screenshot16wl.jpg
- neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow this pwnz flurry.... i can yell at my iMac from across the room and the it blooms according to my voice..
- isoprophlex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yep, electricsheep is the way to go... been using it for years and the sheep just keep getting better.
- Dingle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There was a mac screensaver that was similar to this but instead of using the mic it used the isight for movement. It was cool.
- l0g1cal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm Diggin it! Thanks, also thanks for the electricsheep.org suggestion.
- teckjunkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just incase your not sure how to install it drag it to 'LibraryScreen Savers'
- perfect13thstep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"In another recent post, he wrote this long ranting manifesto about how Java is a faster, more efficient language than C++."
*snickers*
Anybody who's developed anything of significant size in either language (or just tried to build a Java application with a GUI) could refute that pretty quickly. - ellingswin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I prefer the rss reader
- manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@jak119
Ha! Good point. Wonder if they'll put one on the next Mini revision. - jak119, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Too bad the Mini doesn't have a microphone or even a microphone port
- DiggedBy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm digging this just for electricsheep... why didn't i hear about this before now? the linked to screensaver was not impressive.
- Harlequn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this is cool, but electric sheep sounds cooler. +digg
- abhibeckert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone who says this isn't cool didn't download it. A screen saver that reacts to you whistling a tune is *really* awesome.
- Sonic84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0my screen saver has been Helios (http://www.reallyslick.com/ thank you manfesto for saving me a google search) but these new one might make me change :D
- stewacide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm a big fan of the RSS feed visualizer
- MaZAKaR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was never a fan of flurry... I use the tiger scren saver that displays slashdot, i havent gotten around to getting it set to Digg though...
- Bascule62, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For all you Windows knockers - Geiss has been around for years.
- Flashman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm digging this because more people need to see electricsheep.org
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0looks pretty cool... we need this for windows

Yeah, if you peak at the guy's profile, you find that he's definitely someone whose comments should be ignored or blocked due to random polar observations such as that.
In another recent post, he wrote this long ranting manifesto about how Java is a faster, more efficient language than C++. Anyone who believes that a language which executes from bytecode could somehow execute faster and more efficiently than a natively-compiled language is a loon in my book. Blocked! :-) - willlow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.quartzcompositions.com/phpBB2/upload/index.php is the largest collection of quartz composer creations. Also a wiki for quartz composer documentation and a discussion forum.
- redheat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Got to say, I'm so happy I've got Flurry for XP. It makes my work PC so much nicer (yes, nicer = 'mac'ked up!)
I have also just found Desktop Effects for OS X, so we can now set flurry as our desktop wallpapers. Download it here, and get bathed in light 24/7. http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15957 - manfesto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@commongiga
Under System Profiler>Hardware>Graphics/Displays it should say whether or not QE is supported.
Easiest way is to go to "About this Mac" then "More Info" - commongiga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So, I have an ibook that is about six months old...and I don't think I have quartz extreme. Is there any way to get it / check if i have it?
- aquax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm going to have to dig up my mic for this one :-)
- commongiga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thanks manfesto. it says supported but i still can't get it to work. meh, i'll stick with electric sheep.
