- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -3/+28So you want it to have more border than the iPhone so it's larger (on the narrow side) than it needs to be?
- CushyL, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19Apple patents terrible ideas that they never plan to use all the time. They figure as long as they have the idea down on paper, they might as well file a patent... if someone else tries to make it, they can prevent them, collect royalties or sue them.
- jmg703, on 10/10/2007, -6/+22I can't believe this bull$hit made the front page. The quality of digg users and their diggs is going down.
- felchdonkey, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16Meh. True, it's a mixture of iMac and iPhone. I'd expect Apple to be way more innovative - like they are in this patent for a two-sided touchscreen iPod: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/07/05/10/apple_filing_reveals_multi_sided_ipod_with_touch_screen_interface.html
- LeeVal, on 10/10/2007, -3/+13Think of the iPhone without the home button at the bottom. thats the next ipod
- EBFoxbat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Ives just threw up.
- phookyall, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9too bad their ipod didn't saved them
- rusty0101, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Why use anything other than a two contact power port for charging the battery? Note that those two contacts should be flush with the side, not a barrel connector. Possibly use a magnetic field to charge the box for no contacts at all. No physical buttons on the surface at all. All control buttons are translucent touch screen buttons. Power off powers everything off until you remove the unit from a charging station, when it turns into 'lock' mode. Lock will turn off screen back light, and a screen press in the center of the screen activates a dialog that allows you to enter your screen unlock password (number)
For connectivity, use either wireless USB, or wifi. Possibly bluetooth, but that mostly for headphones. Multiple bluetooth headphone sets should be able to be set up as audio output devices for the system, so you and your buddy can watch that video clip without disturbing the rest of the people in the area.
Device syncs up for content the same way that the mactv thingy does, and if done over wifi while you have the system on the charging station, you are likely to leave it there long enough for all your content to sync up properly. Select units will have Edge connectivity and may act as iPhones as well, but may just be data/multimedia units instead.
Just ideas. - sparkmonkeyz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will be like the iPhone -the phone service.
- gmarks, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7It either needs to be smaller in height or smaller in width.
- richardhenry, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6You mean the MENU button.
- modernangel76, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7why is this mediocre mock up getting so much attention?
- anonym41414, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5That's not actually true. What Apple does is patent innovative ideas by hiding them in patents that are downright misleading. Remember the click-wheel patent? It described a mouse as an application of the idea, when it was meant for an iPod all along.
- 00kentt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5British soldiers died the other day - and which ***** did it??? friendly-*****-fire
- Scheissen, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6It doesn't look that great. He needs to go through design school or something.
- djrobnm, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9I think I would like it better if it didn't have Bon Jovi on it.
- seinman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The dock connector is for more than just data and power. If it's changed to mini USB, you'd lose a whole bunch of connection options... the dock connector passes through USB data, Firewire data (on older models), s-video and composite video out, line level audio output, microphone input, device control in and out, and power in and out. All USB can do is power in and data in/out.
- richardhenry, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6What, just take the iPhone design and remove the phone capability? I certainly hope that Apple aren't that boring.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4What's with tags box?
"Photo Sexy Cool Advertise Fun
Art Tattoo Sign Landscape NSFW
Hot Video Animal Girl Picture."
I see only three tags in there that could apply to this, and one not even too much. - sparkmonkeyz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Why wouldn't it have the home button?
- mattyz0r, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5They always die ***** head. Thats what happens when you have a oil hungry dictator in power (Bush).
- fr34k5h0w, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4They have to have at least *one* physical button to a.) wake it up from deep sleep and b.) reset when the thing crashes / recovery mode / disk mode / etc
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Well, we've finally got Frankenstein's opinion.
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Get back on your meds, pronto.
- Maeser, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3If...If I give you money out of my wallet...would it make you feel better?
/I love lamp. - nephilonic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3A few of the sources, including 9to5Mac who seem to be on a roll, are saying there is a home button on the new ipod. Hopefully we'll see some iPhone features in the next ipod besides the ipod software.
- macbookpromat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I'm an Apple fan, but ***** is the iPhone ugly. It's got polished metal, black plastic, polished black plastic, and brushed aluminum, what the *****.
- tbr0, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6what the heck is this doing on the front page? an ugly, thoroughly amatuerish design that anyone could mock up in PS in five minutes... my my.
- xdevit, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Who didn't see this comming...
- eliot2000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I think a sample image featuring Bon Jovi could hurt Apple's sales. Just hope it has wi-fi.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Too simple a device too warrant needing a home button. On the 5G iPods these days you just hold down the center button for a few seconds and it'll take you back to the main menu.
- RooDoG, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Am I the only one that thinks this is Uglier than crap? Why make it wider? Certinly not a Fantastic Concept picture
- DaffyDuck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The on button would be on the top. Everyone here is talking about buttons on the face.
- billbacon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Why the bottom border? Just put a single power/lock toggle switch on the top side and make the entire front panel a touch screen. Pressing this for more than 3 seconds turns it off, less than 3 toggles the lock. Make the thing waterproof and replace the crappy adapter port with a standard mini usb2 port while you're at it.
- AngryBacon, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3404'ed!
- joltjake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2The design is good, a hell of a lot better than that chubby bitch of a new nano design.
- betovarg, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3That just sucks.
- bobblender, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3no kidding.
- sendaletterbomb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If there are no buttons, there is no way to turn it on.
- diggtomanjeri, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I think the rumored new iPods will just be iPhone that only do music and video. They're already smaller than the 1st gen iPods, and do everything an iPod would want to do and run on osX which Apple has been obviously moving iPods towards for a long time so why spend all that time reinventing the wheel. They may change the outer casing some, but other than that it'll just be a stripped down iPhone.
- tdogzthmn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1im an industrial designer and I would not build that, and im sure apple would pass on that design as well.
- rabidpenguin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah this what ive been waiting for for years
- sparkmonkeyz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I am hoping that at least one person reads this comment, even though it is 20 days after the story. I just want to say PWN3D!! Cause you were wrong!!
- ikoul, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Wouldn't your backlight come on when you held the menu button anyway? Because it's supposed to automatically come on when you're using the controls...
- SystemError, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1it is a fat square iphone!!
- Henwood, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Unimaginative DA spam
- mlivebc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I just saw this today and I posted my idea for the next Gen iPod on thinkspotting yesterday. Obviously it has been requested that the next Gen iPods should have iPhone technology in it but the design of the iPhone and it's technology in smaller form would be the best. Check out and vote for my idea here: http://thinkspotting.com/entrytype1_des.php?entry_id=279
- sam10685, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1i forgot... and A LOT of sas.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Wait, so you don't want to buy multiple devices (phone, mp3 player, video player) so Apple should include everything on one package? Alright, that's fine. But why the touch screen? Because you want all of that and a touch screen I should have to buy two devices that do what I want (hold all of my music collect (20,000+ song), and I can take jogging) that are the same damn thing?
You want a touch screen ipod so it can look snazzy, it's not practical at all. What you want it a media device, which is an iPod video with a wider screen. It makes no sense to include a touch screen. -
