- echolyean, on 04/30/2008, -4/+118It's gone from "definitely can't spend money on it" to "probably shouldn't spend money on it" ... it's a gradual process.
- Scaryclouds, on 04/30/2008, -7/+106If the iPhone drops to $200, it will totally dominate the cell phone market. It will make the Razr's marketshare look insignificant.
- time2go, on 04/30/2008, -3/+77There goes my symbol of panache among the peasantry.
- Rauby, on 04/30/2008, -2/+57Too good to be true.
- tapeworm77, on 04/30/2008, -3/+38That's what she said.
- TheBigSquid, on 04/30/2008, -2/+27If the phone was $399 and you knock $200 off the cost is then roughly $200.
- dopke, on 04/30/2008, -2/+27Interesting that the article states that it will be thinner. I thought I read it will be slightly thicker??
- NinjaPig, on 04/30/2008, -6/+27As an employee of at&t, i have to say that this is highly unlikely. I can see if they drop the old models to 199$, when the 3g model comes out. The average iphone user should pay somewhere above $60-70. Not 100$. And the different pricing structure between At&t stores and Apple stores is flat out laughable. What would be the point of that?
To answer your question rivallus, no its not going to be possible to activate it in store b/c in order to do that we need the sim card number, to do that we need to break the seal. This is highly unlikely, as it would automatically incur the restocking fee. - echolyean, on 04/30/2008, -1/+20There's also a little red "thumbs down" button. Just saying.
- sd123, on 04/30/2008, -4/+21How about instead of making a stupid comment about how much you agree, just click the little green "thumbs up" button.
- JKVM, on 04/30/2008, -0/+16FTA: "Apple is expected to have two versions of the new iPhone, an 8-gigabyte-memory and a 16-gigabyte-memory model with price tags widely expected to be $399 and $499." $200 from $399 is $199. Read the article next time before you comment.
- jonshipman, on 04/30/2008, -0/+11They'll probably give you $200 discount in the form of a rebate or credit applied to your bill
- MCA2142, on 04/30/2008, -9/+20We're not the cool crowd. We're the "Got no Flash support" crowd.
And welcome! - zizzo, on 04/30/2008, -1/+11But then everyone will have one and it won't be "cool" anymore to the elitist fanboys. Win win. SIgn me up!
- rivalius13, on 04/30/2008, -1/+11Does this mean the will activate in store or when you order or something? Or still activate via iTunes? Hopefully it is by iTunes, so I can still order from apple and unlock.
- tnoy, on 04/30/2008, -2/+12It means they dont hand you the phone until you have a contract with them.
- gambl0r, on 04/30/2008, -1/+10Better start clicking those banner ads...
- supertvfanatic, on 04/30/2008, -1/+10When Apple changed the Titanium Powerbook G4 to the Aluminum version, it got thicker - from 1.0 to 1.1 inches.
- afx1, on 04/30/2008, -0/+9i agree panera bread is delicious
- JKVM, on 04/30/2008, -1/+10You must not be reading much. This is far from the first mention of GPS.
- centerblack, on 04/30/2008, -2/+10Obviously.
2 hands - 2 hands for texting = 0 HANDS FOR BEER! - jpezzznuts, on 04/30/2008, -0/+8Inaccurate title - its not a price CUT its a $200 phone subsidy like you see on so many (just about all non-prepaid plan) handsets already on the market. The MSRP will still be the same.
- notrub225, on 04/30/2008, -2/+10If the phone was $399 and you knock $200 off the cost is then exactly $199.
- TTURabble, on 04/30/2008, -2/+10Hey, if this new iPhone has 3G, GPS, is thinner and cheaper, I think I know what I'll be spending my Tax Rebate on :)
- virtualball, on 04/30/2008, -0/+8SURPRISE! No one knows!
- Rauby, on 04/30/2008, -2/+9No, no. We are "installer.app" crowd.
- hit9ent, on 04/30/2008, -1/+8It pays to wait sometimes.
- djlspider, on 04/30/2008, -0/+6G4 to G5 towers?
17.0 x 8.9 x 18.4 to 20.1 x 8.1 x 18.7 - Steinr, on 04/30/2008, -3/+9well apple tends to make things smaller, as far as I recall no second gen product was ever larger or thicker than the previous model and they always managed to increase the feature list.
- chemicalrxn, on 04/30/2008, -1/+7Sometimes I type the dollar sign after the number too.
(buried for being a complete jerk-face) - morphie, on 04/30/2008, -0/+6I don't think Apple is going to allow it. It is Apple's strategy to sell stuff a little more expensive to keep it a little more exclusive. It is part of the "different thinking" of Apple. Your thinking isn't different anymore when the whole world is using your product without it being exclusive.
- Raphyy, on 04/30/2008, -0/+5You got ripped off? I got mine 3 months ago as well and I only paid $500 for my 16GB...
- Bologner, on 04/30/2008, -0/+5I'm no math expert, but I think that $399 - 200 is roughly 200 dollars.
- vcudigg, on 04/30/2008, -1/+6soon... "Buy one 32gb iPhone, get the 2nd FREE!"
- MixMastaKooz, on 04/30/2008, -0/+5Actually, the technological marvel Apple has constructed is insignificant next to the power of the Force.
The Force will be incorporated into the 3rd Generation iPhone... - gambl0r, on 04/30/2008, -1/+6King of incorrect apple rumors, you mean
- 1jaxstate1, on 04/30/2008, -0/+5I have no plans on getting a iPhone. But I hope this happens, maybe this will force HTC to drop the prices on their devices. Competition is great for the consumer.
- gn0stik, on 04/30/2008, -0/+5I can't imagine how it would be thinner with gps and 3g modules. However, ya never know. What I do know is this... at 199 bucks, it'll be hard to wait for WM7 phone.
- virtualsnyper, on 04/30/2008, -0/+5How does AT&T plan to lock it? I don't think Apple will have developed a different firmware just for AT&T. They say it will be a "locked" version....as opposed to the unlocked and open version we have now.
- Chaulis, on 04/30/2008, -1/+5This article lacks journalistic integrity. The line "according to a person familiar with the strategy." reeks of grasping at straws to gain attention.
- orlyfactor, on 04/30/2008, -0/+4Too ***** bad for them. How many times have we all bought an iPod only to have a newer, better one with double the storage come out a month later? I specifically waited to get one until they improved it. I'm not falling for their ***** again and adopting early.
- Echomote, on 04/30/2008, -0/+4Actually it's called "activate" and "unlock". Although, yeah, Jailbreak is used to do both.
- AngryFox, on 04/30/2008, -0/+4Isn't great that we can now say: "0.7 inches??! That's as thick as a brick!"?
- theundone, on 04/30/2008, -0/+4Ok yes, the phone itself was $500 but the extra fees and taxes cost me another hundred.
- cawpin, on 04/30/2008, -0/+4He forgot the "il".
- PingoLingo, on 04/30/2008, -1/+5I agree- I'm waiting for the next gen of iphones; ones that will drive me to work, do my job, change the litter box and cook for me- all while saving the environment, ending war and feeding the foodless.... but only if it lets me jam to Feist and play tetris while I'm on the crapper.

Apple rumors exist in a quantum state. It is possible for two conflicting rumors to exist simultaneously until they resolve to one or the other. - mrzeero, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3They are just subsidizing it by selling all your communications to the NSA.
