Wow, someone on Digg using the correct "its" for a change. Impressive. Most impressive. - argonplatypus, on 05/10/2008, -2/+16It was up as a feature that was not yet implemented. They probably pulled it off until they have it up and running since it got so much attention.
- mark076h, on 05/10/2008, -2/+16don't worry by tomorrow afternoon it will be free again
- Eminemdrdre00, on 05/10/2008, -3/+17Is this legal? What if the free access to hotspots was what made someone sign up for an ATT account/iPhone. Then their 2nd day on the network they find out they dont have free access anymore? Meh...I guess its burried somewhere in that "user agreement".
- wonderchemist, on 05/10/2008, -2/+14My guess, premature specification.
- wonderchemist, on 05/10/2008, -0/+97. Kevin Bacon
- mikelieman, on 05/10/2008, -1/+7LEGAL?
Do you think AT&T, who has been unlawfully spying on EVERYONE'S phone and internet usage - for about 5 years now - gives a damn about LEGAL? - KibibyteBrain, on 05/10/2008, -0/+5It might just be that because the rollout of free wifi for iPhones was clearly going to take a few months, they didn't want to get into trouble for making it seem like it was a fully active feature at this time.
- chroko, on 05/10/2008, -1/+5Proving... again... that the worst thing about the iPhone is the AT&T[*] service that it is tied to...
[*] "Your world, delivered... to the NSA.", etc... - Mizzike, on 05/10/2008, -3/+7I know it might be a little off topic, but hey, this is digg...

- adderx99, on 05/10/2008, -10/+13att board meeting:
exec1 'we need to entice users'
exec2 'hey, we could offer free wifi'
exec1 'great! but that would cost us a fortune"
exec3 'we could just pull it off the site a day later, after the blogisphere picks up the story'
exec1 and 2 'Brilliant!' - jhop, on 05/10/2008, -2/+5Weird. It seems obvious that ATT would want to offload some traffic from EDGE to WiFi. I wasn't surprised at all when the feature was discovered, then disabled, only to be followed by an official announcement that it would be available. But to then officially retract it???? WTF?
- headband, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2most likely somebody who updated the site had an old version when they started the update
it would be retarded not to give them access to the hotspots if they already have them...since iphone users must all already have an unlimited data plan giving them access to wifi will be cheaper than paying for the bandwidth on the edge network they would be using otherwise. - pastasauce, on 05/10/2008, -2/+4It could be because of the firefox addon, user agent switcher, can trick them into thinking you're on an iPhone.
http://lifehacker.com/386168/get-free-wi+fi-access ...
It would be disappointing if that's the reason why, because I imagine, even after the word is spread, only one in fifty users will know that trick. - USB2point0, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2when are you people going to realize? apple is doing all of this to up the hype for the iphone.
- richardiscool, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2I assumed you guys already got free WiFi.
I get free WiFi at The Cloud hotspots (which are absolutely everywhere - there's about 10 in my hometown, and it's a small town) on my O2 UK iPhone. - Gimli, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1I've dealt with AT&T in the past and to put it bluntly.....They SUCK!!!!
- Justice101, on 05/10/2008, -1/+2Too long, and small printed EULAs FTL.
- locojones, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1That's what you dummies get for going to AT&T for a silly little phone. Maybe next time you'll base your purchasing decisions on who has a decent network and great customer service instead of who has a toy with a shiny logo on it.
- mentor972, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1I already pointed this out as stated here...
http://digg.com/tech_news/Free_iPhone_WiFi_at_Star ...
But this article is also wrong, and it will be coming eventually as stated here...
http://digg.com/apple/No_Free_iPhone_Wifi_at_Starb ... - TimmyGUNZ, on 05/10/2008, -2/+3Um...move?
- MtheoryX, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Stop that already.
- billbd, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1They are probably waiting for Apple's big 2nd generation iphone announcement so Steve can "and look what else we have added."
- wphj, on 05/10/2008, -1/+2Nothing.
- MtheoryX, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Auto-playing movie, and all centered text FTL!!
- theMurdocVolta, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1unlock?
I'm with T-Mobile and love my plan.
AT&T is too much for too little with too much hassle. - mikelieman, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1I remember how "Back in the day", phones NEVER dropped calls... EVER. If they did, you had someone come out and fix the damn thing.
- kevnaca, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Not at all, all at&t is doing is disabling the iphone specific login screen for free wifi.
- NicksVideo, on 05/10/2008, -1/+2I wouldn't consider some text on an image an 'official retraction'.
- theMurdocVolta, on 05/10/2008, -1/+2I get it, you're an *****.
Does it really matter anymore '08 - peestandingup, on 05/10/2008, -2/+3It's a bad idea to show favoritism to a specific phone model anyway. Why not just let all AT&T customers have it, or at least all AT&T smartphones??
- russ3, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1They just realized that less people will upgrade to the 3G iphone if they allow the current users to have any sort of upgraded internet.
- Radar2004, on 05/10/2008, -1/+2at&t knows how to give blue balls...
- mpeters13, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1siigh. i used the wrong "its"
- kevnaca, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1He refers to what Jobs called the prematurely posted Powermac G5 specifications.
- mpeters13, on 05/10/2008, -2/+2This is disappointing. This service was working fine yesterday. Does that mean I can expect the starbucks in my buildling to dismantle it's AT&T access point? That seems like one hell of a waste of money. The cost of deployment wasn't free. Why would they be so quick to flip flop? (other than the obvious...)
- inactive, on 05/10/2008, -2/+2Then why is it on the front page?
- dagamer34, on 05/10/2008, -3/+3Indian giver!
- MtheoryX, on 05/10/2008, -2/+2Right. Why give massive rebates to entice buyers to choose a very expensive car? Why not give rebates on every car in a manufacturer's line?
See, they are trying to push the iPhone. That would be why they show favoritism. It makes them money. - handler, on 05/10/2008, -3/+3WTF I was in the ATT store today and asked the guy if the free wifi hotspot access was already in place and he said YES. Now its gone? I haven't even gotten to use it while it was free! :(
- 34moonman, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1I wondered what happened. I was getting the iPhone log in at local mcdonalds, and starbucks, then a few days later...gone.
- inactive, on 05/10/2008, -2/+2Dude seriously, ***** AT&T
- inactive, on 05/10/2008, -2/+1That snark is full of win!
- theMurdocVolta, on 05/10/2008, -2/+1http://download.ziphone.org/
Seriously. Take the Red Pill and see how far the rabbit hole goes. - Gonasadude, on 05/10/2008, -2/+1you thought this was a comment, but it's not
- techmite, on 05/10/2008, -2/+1I just now saw a review of a 40$ phone with high speed cdma internet capability and opera mini support on http://www.techjunkiez.com .lol .i think i should buy that phone now :p
- AvidPreatorian, on 05/10/2008, -3/+1i threw mine out when i got the iPhone but no, really, you should like yours - they're nice ..
- lrdntwnd, on 05/10/2008, -4/+2come on guys.... we all know it's coming... GIve them a chance to announce it before they commit... AT&T is trying to do the Apple thing and failing miserably because Steve doesn't run their company... They don't really have that fear of getting fired for letting something out a little early. Plus, what's wrong with a little publicity about a new service that isn't quite available yet? They'll announce the free wi-fi at the same keynote where Steve announces the new iPhone (and at least the wi-fi will be available that day). WWDC, anyone?
