600,000 iPhone Activations with AT&T?
macrumors.com — Newswireless.net claims that AT&T has activated 600,000 iPhones as of Monday night. As a result, they believe that Apple will hit one million iPhone sales by Wednesday/Thursday. Newswireless is the same publication that believed that the European iPhone deal was to be announced on Monday. ...

- over9, on 10/11/2007, -36/+15I love how the mac fanboys defend the iPhone by saying "Oh it's only version 1, they will include the features via software updates"
First of all, that is NOT an excuse. Where has apple been all this time and what has it been doing? Unlike the music player industry when iPod first came out, the cell phone market is very mature. Various companies have set high standards. How can apple leave out stuff that everyone including Steve Jobs take for granted is incredible. Examples include mass deletion of emails and sending a text message to multiple recipients in one go.
Second of all, does it make business sense for apple to release all these new features for free? No, it doesn't. Apple has a history of making loyal fanboys buy new versions for tiny improvements in features. Sure they will release free bug fixes. But fixing the huge list of feature omissions? That's for iPhone v2.
And third of all, by that time, the competitors will have released even superior products.- Tobark, on 10/11/2007, -13/+12"First of all, that is NOT an excuse. Where has apple been all this time and what has it been doing?"-- Building a phone unlike any other on the market today, thats where. There is a reason why they sold 700,000 in just over two days.
"Examples include mass deletion of emails" -- Easily fixed in software
"sending a text message to multiple recipients in one go." -- Easily fixed in software
"Apple has a history of making loyal fanboys buy new versions for tiny improvements in features" -- You mean like EVERY OTHER FREAKING COMPANY WHO MAKES TECH EQUIPMENT/SOFTWARE. Get your head out of your ass. Its a business.
So lets look at the other side of the coin. What about the features that the iPhone has that no other phone has. Did you just forget about those?- BaGE87, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2There's nothing new around iPhone to make think it's the best of the best. Simply fashion, it's a poor good device. There out there at least one phone per celphone company that is better than iPhone in functions; but of course, fashion is fashion, I prefer good functionality.
- deadbaby, on 10/11/2007, -5/+5"Second of all, does it make business sense for apple to release all these new features for free?"
Depends what features you're talking about. Refining the built in apps is something they probably couldn't charge for. Who's going to pay extra to get minor feature upgrades in Mail? They'd likely just give those features away instead. They will probably charge for adding applications to the phone via iTunes Store though. Stuff like games, video recording, etc would be optional upgrades. Apple has no reason to piss off the early adopters of the iPhone. - totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Just had to have another iPhone rant, eh? :P This digg article has nothing about iPhone fans "making excuses"..its just a sales prediction. Get over it, dude.

- over9, on 10/11/2007, -6/+6@tobark: The reason they sold 700,000 is because of the loyal apple fanbase and the huge advertising and hype campaign. Let's see what long term sales are going to be like.
- B1663r, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1You have to be kidding. I am an Apple hater. The iPhone is going to be like the Razr in 2 years. It is going to be the phone that everybody has.
- ronmexico, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8over9, did you come here just to pick a fight? Nobody cares what you think, people are satisfied with what the iPhone is. learn to deal with it.
- kinseyincanada, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5the ipod wasnt the first mp3 player at all, it was years after, the reason the ipods and iphones do so well it that they are easy to use, look stunning and have a lot of hype and that hip factor, and a brilliant advertizing campaign.
- over9, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2@ronmexico: Are they? Have a look at various forums. There are plenty of people who said they weren't satisfied and are returning it. In fact the macrumors forum has a special "feature" request list from all those peeps that aren't happy with it.

@Gee1004: I never said updates, I meant products. Apple isn't simply going to make the current iPhone better by giving free updates. They will make another iPhone v2.- B1663r, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Sure there will be updates! They are gonna fix this or that bug. Or deactivate hacked iPhones...
But you are right this is the iPhone for now, no major upgrades to software. The next iPhone will have the features people are clamoring for now. They will probably bifurcate the product line. IPhoneVideo, iPhoneNano etc etc.

- wayback09, on 10/11/2007, -10/+3Didn't you hear, the 3G iPhone was announced for Europe on July 2nd 2007. According to every digg article posted. Just two days after the first generation iPhone was released. Oh wait, that rumor didn't materialize. EDGE speed iPhones for everyone!
- jun2san, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I was talking to a friend of mine tonight (who was in town for the 4th) that happens to be the project coordinator for the AT&T network upgrade to 3G and he says the reason the iPhone is not on the 3G network is because the network here in the U.S. would not be able to handle the number of projected iPhone users. (I see that the EDGE network also recently collapsed according to some recent articles).
He doesn't work for AT&T or Apple but he does work for the primary contractor that AT&T contracted to be in charge of the nation-wide upgrade (look up bechtel telecoms) He's pretty much an expert in telecommunications and he says that this is most likely the primary reason they went with EDGE.
Europe's 3G network can probably handle the large number of iPhone users.
He leaves this weekend so hopefully I will get a chance to talk to him some more about it before he leaves and clarify some things.- jun2san, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Oh yeah, he also kept correcting me whenever I mentioned the 3G network and says that I should refer it as UMTS network. - InferiorWang, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Hmmm...my smart phone does everything the iphone does and more. It may not have as much internal memory, but SD cards are getting pretty cheap nowadays. And the fact that I spent less than a third of what the iPhone costs is just another bonus.
- jaej, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0surely you jest? too bad the iphone doesn't have any sort of file directory system, and too bad you can send only one picture per email (and can't send regular picture messages), and too bad it has a ***** ass keyboard, and too bad you're paying $1500 for a phone that really and truly sucks ass. If you are so insistent on buying an inferior apple product, at least wait until they make a few more versions so it's not as buggy.
600,000? holy *****. what a waste of money. just shows how gullible consumers are. i think the problems with the iphone are still pretty obscure, unfortunately.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/11/2007, -16/+7My god. Apple can peddle anything. A $600 phone with no 3rd party support and a battery that costs $90 to replace.....
- colincornaby, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9I dunno about you, but Verizon charged me more than that for a new battery for my RAZR (not that I think that was a great deal...)
- bpapa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Yes, I'm sure all of the people waiting in line for this phone were trying to fight off those seconds thoughts of "omgz no third support what will I do now on this phone where I can only text, use my calendar, view photos, take photos, watch youtube videos at high quality, check my stocks, map things, check the weather, take notes, check my email, browse the web, listen to music, watch TV shows/movies, and actually... you know, call people."
- thecockbanana, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Why do people keep saying $600 is outrageous? The average smartphone here in Australia is anywhere between $1000 and $1500. With direct exchange rates, that'll put an iPhone at $700 (half the normal cost than for something similar). Though it's more likely to retail for $999, it's still a bargain for us.

- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10The things to know:
Typign really does work well. I have noticed, a lot of people are used to using the edge of fingernails because they have traditionally used them in place of a stylus - don't do that, you'lll have inconsistant presses. Instead use the side of your thumbs, and remember just a small part presses against the screen. Just keep track of where that will press and pay attention to what keys you are actually pressing - in just a short while you get used to the position of the keys and your thumbs.
The screen does get greasy, but the display cuts through it really well.
Mail is weak but OK for spot checks. For now just treat it as an emergency view on email and a way to send outbound pretty easily (you can set it to CC you on all email sent so you have a record).
The browser is really good on WiFi, sluggish but usable on EDGE. Maps are actually pretty usable on EDGE, and fantastic on WiFi. The great thing about the browser is that with the screen resolution as high as it is, you can read even very small text so you don't need to zoom in as far as you would think. Hitting very small links is also much easier than you would think.
WiFi switching works pretty well, though the thing can start to get confused if there are a million access points around.
The iPod part works pretty well.
I actually use the YouTube thing. I had zero interest in it, indeed I never really use it much on the web - but if you have a moment of free time it makes for a fun diversion. The WiFi video quality is also slightly higher than what you get on the web.
Phone calls? Sounds great to me. I hadn't realized that in my area, AT&T seems to provide the best signal - or at least it's better than any cell phone I have had, as I get signal now in places I never got reception before. I almost wish I had used AT&T before so I could know if that was because AT&T has better service or the iPhone has better reception than my other phones.
Also I find it OK for light business use. Sure you can't hook it to exchange yet, but you can hook it up both at work and at home, and have it merge your calendars on the iPhone so you see a unified view of home and work appointments. That will be much handier than I was expecting I think.
In brief, I am really happy with this purchase. If you are not happy with the plans note the stories here describing how to use it on a month-to-month plan, or even how to use it wiithout the cell phone aspect - but I'd say using it without any cell plan takes away a large point of the device, to have a network enabled device with you whereever you go. And month-to-month is only a little cheaper than the cheapest plans, for a lot lower talk tme and other aspects (still unlimited data though).
As for that "Missing" thread, take some of that with a grain of salt and remember that what it does do, it does very well indeed! - totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Honestly? Its pretty sweet.
1) The phone part is serviceable-the visual voicemail is better than Cingulars crappy dial in voice mail that I've had for 5 years. The quality is good, but again, I had a typical free phone, so I don't know how it compares to "great" phones that might be out there. Its better than a Sony-Ericsson, put it that way :p
2) The iPod stuff is top rate-the interface is gorgeous, music sounds good, videos look incredible. (the 8G is not enough space though..and synching 1.3G movie files is pretty tedious.)
3) Google Maps is awesome, even over Edge.
The rest of the stuff? Browser, widgets, etc..are just decent...(Safari is good over wi-fi, tedious over EDGE). Email works as advertised, but its not replacing your desktop email. EDGE is pretty poor overall.
Is it worth it? Do you want an awesome iPod, a decent cell phone, and mobile Google Maps? To me, those make it worth it. Everything else is just stuff to dick around with. - zeiben, on 10/11/2007, -7/+3Apple fanboys make me vomit, and sharing their hardware gives me a rash. That said, the phone is not only worth the money, but worth being mistaken for an apple fanboy. It's not for children (no games, can't play "my humps" as your ringtone, etc.), but it's a great device.

I think its pretty damn impressive - especially when you consider
1. USA only (there is the ROW still to go!),
2. One phone company only, and
3. AT&T has more than its fair share of detractors.
I am in Australia and we represent a tiny section of the worldwide market so we will be down the list somewhat before we see the iPhone - dammit!- B1663r, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Unprecedented. Dont worry, apple is gonna move fast. They have about a year and a half of cornered market on this class of phone. They are gonna develop every market they can with lightning speed.
- MiDri, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4You'll probably get to enjoy a 3g model too. They'll probably be locked to one of your local carriers and unusable here in the states. So enjoy that ;p

expect apple to have an announcement on their homepage Monday proclaiming one million iPhones. - capecodcarl, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Everyone in the USA that wanted an iPhone has likely got an iPhone now since Apple had launched an unprecedented (for them) carpet bombing advertising campaign for this thing. I wouldn't expect them to sell more than 150,000 iPhones over the next two years now that they have gotten iPhones into the hands of their rabid fan base.
- fantasticjon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1um. Definitely wrong about that one. I think there are tons of people who want one but are waiting for a few reasons.
1. Waiting for their contract to end.
2. Waiting for it to hit the market to see if it is buggy or has any fatal flaws.
3. Waiting to save up the $$ to get one.
or my scenario - waiting until I can get one with a one year contract. - superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1How was the campaign "carpet bombing"? I hardly ever saw a commercial on TV. There were a lot of stories on it, but that was people talking about the iPhone, not Apple marketing.

- MadKennyP, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Certainly not a smartphone, but interestingly, the Zune has yet to reach 1,000,000 in sales after being on the market for 8 months. http://blogs.business2.com/apple/2007/05/microsofts_zune.html
- m2paper, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Lol
- DaleoftheUK, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Wait, there was an article claiming 700,000 units sold in past few days. That 100,000 can't be all gifts...maybe they weren't activated with AT&T?
- shariqueniazi, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Steve Jobs may not have reinvented the mobile phone, but he has re-invented the way mobile phones are sold.
http://www.smartphoneone.blogspot.com - CandidateZero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Apple has a positive image. AT&T has a negative image, for good reason (anti-net neutrality, gluttonous monopolizing).
By associating themselves with Apple and the iPhone, AT&T may be trying to get rid of the rightfully bad associations people have with them. I hope it doesn't work. - wassim2k, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8We're going to be posting every sales milestone now? Let me save you the trouble...
- Apple sells its one millionth iPhone!!!
- iPhone 1.8.3 released, 10 million units sold!
- iPhone 2.0, smaller, four colors, sales expected to reach 25 million worldwide!- WillHutch5, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Who wants it smaller? Has the size of it ever been mentioned as a problem? It's literally the exact same size as a blackjack, but skinnier. Idiot.
- wilhoitm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You forgot the PINK one for the ladies! Where a percentage of the price goes to find a cure for Breast Cancer!
- iChaz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Meaning the other 100,000 either filmed themselves throwing them on the ground, took it apart, or sold it on eBay.
- Mapper99, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Check out this list of iPhone hacks, wallpapers, ringtones, etc...Can't wait to see some cool mods as well!
http://iphone.corank.com - jaej, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0Well, I pity the 600,000 people who have a bad phone on a worse network.
verizon ftw- MadKennyP, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Sad.
- wilhoitm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Dude, get over it! Did AT & T sleep with your imaginary girlfriend or something?
- MikeF2005, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1That target of Wed/Thurs doesn't add up for me. If Apple sold 600,000 (or 700,000) since the launch I do not see them selling another 3-400,000 without another massive crush of buyers like they had at launch. I think the million mark is still quite a way off now that you have all the early adopter fan boys out of the way.
- MikeF2005, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1Man! I was so right when I posted this. I must be prescient!

Hm. 146,000 activations. Whoops!
