- sockpuppets, on 10/11/2007, -1/+63Like iPhone? Buy one. Don't like it? Don't buy one.
Where's the drama? - shadowswordth, on 10/11/2007, -17/+62Can anyone tell me about this iPhone?
- Jwzupancic, on 10/11/2007, -5/+31Hmm.. I just bought one after some hard research. I've read about 10 reviews, all from trusted sources, and they all say the same thing:
It's a great phone, but it has its flaws.
Then again, what phones don't have their flaws?
No reason to degrade people who have them, if it's not your style, then don't spend your money. - pyrotix, on 10/11/2007, -2/+21Any word on Canada?
*crickets* - Gee1004, on 10/11/2007, -4/+21"Apple has a history of making loyal fanboys buy new versions for tiny improvements in features""
That is BS. Apple has never charged for updates. - mdavis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17But...but...but...someone on the internets said the iPhone would flop!!
- acid0426, on 10/11/2007, -7/+24I want my GooglePhone.
- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18Just had to have another iPhone rant, eh? :P This digg article has nothing about iPhone fans "making excuses"..its just a sales prediction. Get over it, dude.
- LeonardNimrod, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Assuming the article is accurate, it only accounts for iPhones going through activation.
This excludes a small group who purchased their iPhones in stores but have yet to activate for whatever reason, and a very large group that purchased their iPhones online but have yet to receive them. this latter group could be a half million as there are many, like me, who don't mind waiting an extra week, who wanted more than 2 iPhones and who really don't like waiting in lines or live close enough to a retailer to make the drive worthwhile. - mal1964, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12I love it when they figure out how much money apple is making on the phones, like a cut is coming their way.
- wilhoitm, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13Every singe Apple Store is completely sold out except for 2 stores according to Apple's availability page.
- NSResponder, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11Lots of people have AAPL shares. It matters to us.
-jcr - cybermort, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10if you check on apples website http://www.apple.com/retail/iphone/ it seems like they have completely Sold Out throughout the entire country except two stores.
- originalcrush, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10I guess 100,000 are waiting for DVD Jon
- bpapa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Yes, I'm sure all of the people waiting in line for this phone were trying to fight off those seconds thoughts of "omgz no third support what will I do now on this phone where I can only text, use my calendar, view photos, take photos, watch youtube videos at high quality, check my stocks, map things, check the weather, take notes, check my email, browse the web, listen to music, watch TV shows/movies, and actually... you know, call people."
- superkendall, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10The things to know:
Typign really does work well. I have noticed, a lot of people are used to using the edge of fingernails because they have traditionally used them in place of a stylus - don't do that, you'lll have inconsistant presses. Instead use the side of your thumbs, and remember just a small part presses against the screen. Just keep track of where that will press and pay attention to what keys you are actually pressing - in just a short while you get used to the position of the keys and your thumbs.
The screen does get greasy, but the display cuts through it really well.
Mail is weak but OK for spot checks. For now just treat it as an emergency view on email and a way to send outbound pretty easily (you can set it to CC you on all email sent so you have a record).
The browser is really good on WiFi, sluggish but usable on EDGE. Maps are actually pretty usable on EDGE, and fantastic on WiFi. The great thing about the browser is that with the screen resolution as high as it is, you can read even very small text so you don't need to zoom in as far as you would think. Hitting very small links is also much easier than you would think.
WiFi switching works pretty well, though the thing can start to get confused if there are a million access points around.
The iPod part works pretty well.
I actually use the YouTube thing. I had zero interest in it, indeed I never really use it much on the web - but if you have a moment of free time it makes for a fun diversion. The WiFi video quality is also slightly higher than what you get on the web.
Phone calls? Sounds great to me. I hadn't realized that in my area, AT&T seems to provide the best signal - or at least it's better than any cell phone I have had, as I get signal now in places I never got reception before. I almost wish I had used AT&T before so I could know if that was because AT&T has better service or the iPhone has better reception than my other phones.
Also I find it OK for light business use. Sure you can't hook it to exchange yet, but you can hook it up both at work and at home, and have it merge your calendars on the iPhone so you see a unified view of home and work appointments. That will be much handier than I was expecting I think.
In brief, I am really happy with this purchase. If you are not happy with the plans note the stories here describing how to use it on a month-to-month plan, or even how to use it wiithout the cell phone aspect - but I'd say using it without any cell plan takes away a large point of the device, to have a network enabled device with you whereever you go. And month-to-month is only a little cheaper than the cheapest plans, for a lot lower talk tme and other aspects (still unlimited data though).
As for that "Missing" thread, take some of that with a grain of salt and remember that what it does do, it does very well indeed! - wassim2k, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8We're going to be posting every sales milestone now? Let me save you the trouble...
- Apple sells its one millionth iPhone!!!
- iPhone 1.8.3 released, 10 million units sold!
- iPhone 2.0, smaller, four colors, sales expected to reach 25 million worldwide! - Aleks, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Can you please shut up about the Zune, it's not even a phone or a decent audio player.
- colincornaby, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9I dunno about you, but Verizon charged me more than that for a new battery for my RAZR (not that I think that was a great deal...)
- shadowswordth, on 10/11/2007, -5/+11God, I ruined it.
- ronmexico, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Oh god please no. I can't handle more insane people bitching about another anticipated phone coming out.
- jvq1958, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Anyone know how 1 million phones sold in the first week compares with other phone/smart phone/pda companies new product introductions?
I think its pretty damn impressive - especially when you consider
1. USA only (there is the ROW still to go!),
2. One phone company only, and
3. AT&T has more than its fair share of detractors.
I am in Australia and we represent a tiny section of the worldwide market so we will be down the list somewhat before we see the iPhone - dammit! - ronmexico, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8over9, did you come here just to pick a fight? Nobody cares what you think, people are satisfied with what the iPhone is. learn to deal with it.
- turpenine, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6baybe cries like boo hoo.
- edebolt, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9read it and weep Apple haters.
- kinseyincanada, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5the ipod wasnt the first mp3 player at all, it was years after, the reason the ipods and iphones do so well it that they are easy to use, look stunning and have a lot of hype and that hip factor, and a brilliant advertizing campaign.
- daftman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Remember high school? Where that lame ass kid had to get the latest gear or wear the latest fashion? Yea, that kid is you.
- CandidateZero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Apple has a positive image. AT&T has a negative image, for good reason (anti-net neutrality, gluttonous monopolizing).
By associating themselves with Apple and the iPhone, AT&T may be trying to get rid of the rightfully bad associations people have with them. I hope it doesn't work. - MiDri, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Exactly! It has a feature set that I can get behind -- Good browser, itunes, 8gigs of storage, great camera (does really well at night!), and high quality youtube (I've never watched so much youtube in my life!) and the integrated google maps is freakin sweeeeeeet!
- deadbaby, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4How often do you really need to copy & paste on a cell phone? My BlackBerry does it (I think) but I've never actually used it before.
- MiDri, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4You'll probably get to enjoy a 3g model too. They'll probably be locked to one of your local carriers and unusable here in the states. So enjoy that ;p
I love mine regardless of data speeds, however! - krazytom, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7The Zune is not a phone you dumb *****.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Unprecedented. Dont worry, apple is gonna move fast. They have about a year and a half of cornered market on this class of phone. They are gonna develop every market they can with lightning speed.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Wrongo!!! The iPhone is gonna be great for consumers. As people Like verizon try and figure out ways to compete with ATT and the iPhone (and that 5 year exclusive, wow that is a long time) they are gonna discount!!! We may be seeing packages as low as $20 a month. Or all the extras that Verizon charges for now will come for free! Also there have been two big upgrades to the Verizon software since the iPhone announcement. For once the consumer wins!!! Woo hoo go apple!
- MadKennyP, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Certainly not a smartphone, but interestingly, the Zune has yet to reach 1,000,000 in sales after being on the market for 8 months. http://blogs.business2.com/apple/2007/05/microsofts_zune.html
- InitialDMP5, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I believe it took the RAZR about 6 months or so to sell a million and that was supposedly the fastest selling mobile phone before the iPhone.
expect apple to have an announcement on their homepage Monday proclaiming one million iPhones. - totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Honestly? Its pretty sweet.
1) The phone part is serviceable-the visual voicemail is better than Cingulars crappy dial in voice mail that I've had for 5 years. The quality is good, but again, I had a typical free phone, so I don't know how it compares to "great" phones that might be out there. Its better than a Sony-Ericsson, put it that way :p
2) The iPod stuff is top rate-the interface is gorgeous, music sounds good, videos look incredible. (the 8G is not enough space though..and synching 1.3G movie files is pretty tedious.)
3) Google Maps is awesome, even over Edge.
The rest of the stuff? Browser, widgets, etc..are just decent...(Safari is good over wi-fi, tedious over EDGE). Email works as advertised, but its not replacing your desktop email. EDGE is pretty poor overall.
Is it worth it? Do you want an awesome iPod, a decent cell phone, and mobile Google Maps? To me, those make it worth it. Everything else is just stuff to dick around with. - jun2san, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I was talking to a friend of mine tonight (who was in town for the 4th) that happens to be the project coordinator for the AT&T network upgrade to 3G and he says the reason the iPhone is not on the 3G network is because the network here in the U.S. would not be able to handle the number of projected iPhone users. (I see that the EDGE network also recently collapsed according to some recent articles).
He doesn't work for AT&T or Apple but he does work for the primary contractor that AT&T contracted to be in charge of the nation-wide upgrade (look up bechtel telecoms) He's pretty much an expert in telecommunications and he says that this is most likely the primary reason they went with EDGE.
Europe's 3G network can probably handle the large number of iPhone users.
He leaves this weekend so hopefully I will get a chance to talk to him some more about it before he leaves and clarify some things. - insomniac8400, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Damn, should have invested in the new at&t.
- NSResponder, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7Haven't you guys all moved to Michigan yet?
-jcr - dohidied, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Coming from an old RAZR, this phone is beyond great. Of course it has flaws, but I honestly think they're minor things.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That is the new in soviet russia joke
- timusca, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2
Yeah, you could buy your gPhone and go to Starbucks and connect to your local G-Spot. - artdiggzit, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Jealous much? It's our money, it's our joy, it's our business!
- thecockbanana, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Why do people keep saying $600 is outrageous? The average smartphone here in Australia is anywhere between $1000 and $1500. With direct exchange rates, that'll put an iPhone at $700 (half the normal cost than for something similar). Though it's more likely to retail for $999, it's still a bargain for us.
- wilhoitm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You forgot the PINK one for the ladies! Where a percentage of the price goes to find a cure for Breast Cancer!
- Msoltanian, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Talk about a boost for AT&T. Time to buy some stocks.
- OdinEye, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1By "people" you mean that you have done extensive research to show that a majority of people don't like working with iTunes right?
You wouldn't just have pulled that opinoin directly from your a$$? - OdinEye, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4Hey wow! That joke's not getting old or anything...
- iChaz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Meaning the other 100,000 either filmed themselves throwing them on the ground, took it apart, or sold it on eBay.
