- cerealjynx, on 12/03/2008, -2/+21Spotlight became soooo much better with Leopard.
And even better with these tips. - Dinsdale77, on 12/04/2008, -2/+17Wow, a list of things!
- alex7575, on 12/04/2008, -1/+9I thought the first three were pretty obvious to anyone who's used Spotlight before.
- chkdg8, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6I really sucks that there's no more recent developments for Quicksilver. How awesome would it be if Apple acquired QS and applied it towards a future build of Spotlight.
- nipterink, on 12/04/2008, -3/+9"You probably know that you can access Spotlight quickly with the Command spacebar keyboard shortcut"... O_O
- NathanCH, on 12/04/2008, -1/+6Wait, you're saying if I type something more specific I'll get more specific results?!
- fugazied, on 12/04/2008, -2/+6Yeah leopard spotlight is better than quicksilver for a lot of stuff. However I still use QS as the primary app launcher. God I love my mac.
- Kragnerac, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4Become enlightened. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spotlight_(software)
- kyc050564, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3I use quicksilver for app launching, web search and hotkey triggers.
I use spotlight for dictionary, calculator and to relaunch quicksilver when it crashes. - helloyamadotcom, on 12/04/2008, -3/+5Yep. I use it to launch apps way fast :)
- erichh, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1I totally agree with Joey and I shall speak for him when I say no he is not high. Why can’t we list results by creation date? Where the file is located?
I am so sick of the irrelevant and ridiculous search results that I switched to using Google Desktop. - chazcron, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2I too disabled spotlight shortcut for photoshop. I HATE spotlight. Been using macs for 22 years. I have two huge monitors. Not having the ability to initate searches somewhere other that the top right of a 30" monitor is STUPID. Having to relearn how to search only on ONE remote disk each time is a waste of time, so is not viewing by date modified. Of course, so is having to switch from "this mac" to the open folder when searching in a finder window in Leopard is the ultimate fsuck job.
It is useless to me. - protoopus, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2i get it sometimes when i'm trying to open 'curves'. i'm probably hitting the command and spacebar with my big old fat thumb.
if it wasn't the company's computer i'd drag spotlight to the trash and securely throw it away.
(so that keyboard shortcut disable is in system preferences?) - inactive, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Oh good lord.
- wastern, on 12/04/2008, -1/+3I knew all of these things
- falafelkiosken, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2mdfind ftw
- johnnysaucepn, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1Dugg for random capitalisation and random switching of 'u' and 'you'.
- GuitarHeroDenn, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1Does knowing about Spotlight count as something I didn't know?
- bonk2k, on 12/04/2008, -2/+3cmd+spacebar brings up spotlight, then start typing the name of the app and as soon as it show up hit enter and it will run. Probably everyone knows this, but I never really used spotlight until I learned this shortcut.
- kreatre2007, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1These are nice tips but, I already knew about them. I use Quicksilver not as a replacement but as an application launcher. It works a lot faster than Spotlight does since I have it setup to only launch apps.
- tgiles, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1Google Desktop uses Mac's built-in Spotlight database, but performs Google's own version of searching on top of it instead. It's pretty good, but I default to the generic Spotlight when I can for most things.
On a lark I ended up writing a PHP / Spotlight search engine for Macs that turned out really well. I also created a (rather generic) image gallery that is powered by Spotlight searches (actually, the command line 'mdfind' tool).
Interesting stuff, but nothing you couldn't get after 5 minutes of playing around with it.
tom - zeppo, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1I thought I would get dug down if I mentioned I actually use Microsoft keyboards on my macpro quadcore with the 5150 xeons. I seem to be getting dug down no matter what I post so I guess it doesn't matter.
- Chrysalii, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1not only that, but an Apple related list.
time to diggasm. - Pushkin, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1Dug for your name
- Azerael, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1"Start" button for me...
- CraigReed, on 12/04/2008, -1/+2Here we go... top ten reasons to love lists...
Number 10. They help you find the stupid people who can't count.
Number 9. The incredible suspense, will they remember to talk about command space?! The suspense is killing me.. oh wait I just read this list.
Number 8. They give you solid bragging rights when your favorite movie or game or whatever is higher than your friends movie or game or whatever.
Number 7. The endless debates over what made the list and what didn't
Number 6. How special you felt when you realized you already knew all 5 of these spotlight tips, see? It's a confidence booster!
Number 5. Debating the legitimacy of the list in the first place.
Number 4. Having an excuse to make a list in the comments section of digg about a list.
Number 3. A handy way to keep track of your shopping, maybe they should have used lists in congress.
Number 2. Isn't that what they do on diggnation?
Number 1. Hell isn't Digg just a big list!? It's no wonder we digg this stuff up! - Azerael, on 12/04/2008, -1/+2I dugg you, Microsoft make some pretty good keyboards.
Oh, and having two buttons on my mice is nice, too. - mattsx, on 12/04/2008, -1/+1me too. payback for R'ing TFM
- daking89, on 12/04/2008, -2/+2Nah, pretty sure I knew them already
- wwwluckyro, on 12/04/2008, -1/+1yeah.
- linkingum, on 12/04/2008, -0/+0take a look
- zeppo, on 12/04/2008, -1/+1Thanks I see that someone dugg me down for that because as of this moment my comment is at the default +1. Yeah I have the 5 button intelileye MS Mouse with the natural keyboard pro. Apple keyboards and mice just feel too small to me.
- datdamonfoo, on 12/04/2008, -0/+06. That it exists.
- vwgtiturbo, on 12/04/2008, -1/+0So, let's review a ***** thing about Spotlight... Your query has to be the start of a word (e.g. If I want to launch 'Caffeine', I have to type 'caffeine'. If I type 'affeine', Spotlight won't give correct results). GARBAGE.
It's unfortunate that QuickSilver crashes too much and adds way too much time to my login/shutdown to be useful... - liquisoft, on 12/04/2008, -2/+1I loved Spotlight at first, but over time it began getting slower and slower. It's probably my fault.
Still, I disabled it entirely and replaced it with Quicksilver. Much much faster program and I can identify the specific results I want it to give me when I type in words. - Remy1985, on 12/04/2008, -2/+1I got sick of it hogging up my cpu. I'll stick to quicksilver thank you.
- zeppo, on 12/04/2008, -4/+2alt-spacebar for those of us that like macs but prefer PC keyboards.
- sonicularulus, on 12/04/2008, -5/+2never stare directly at a spotlight. it may blind you.
- ChickenPatty, on 12/04/2008, -4/+0nah, im too lazy to read your link or the main story. It's kinda ironic though because i am BORED. Oh well, thanks for the effort. I should just go to bed anyway, its like 3 o'clock in the morning....
- diggater, on 12/04/2008, -4/+0wow i dont know yet.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -7/+2
1) Spotlight was once in a Glam Rock Band, before his brother, Finder, overdosed on heroin.
2) Spotlight is actually dyslexic
3) 2 girls, 1 cup was Spotlight's idea
4) Spotlight gives money to save the narwhals
5) Spotlight masturbates by clicking "About this Mac" - inactive, on 12/04/2008, -8/+3First of all. Quick Silver has the coolest name, unlike spotlight wtf makes u think of that lamp from pixar.
Second You can Pipe things from one app to another in Quick Silver
Third That Huge Text Display in Quick Silver comes in handing during class or events where u want to tell jokes to people in back of you. - trevormells, on 12/04/2008, -7/+1OR,
http://tinyurl.com/63jt9l - inactive, on 12/04/2008, -7/+16. WTF is spotlight?
- Vorphlack, on 12/04/2008, -8/+2I never use it - I also had to disable the keyboard shortcut because it kept opening when I used the magnifying glass in Photoshop.
- typhoon62, on 12/04/2008, -8/+1Apple just pulls this stuff out of their asses..
- ChickenPatty, on 12/04/2008, -10/+0nuh uh! Spotlight sucks!
