- afx1, on 10/12/2007, -82/+9Ha ha... Vista = Fail
XP ftw! - charliecharlos, on 10/12/2007, -17/+131...The ads are great and everything, but... anybody think the Genius was really cute? I think I'm heading over to my Apple store to see thes "Geniuses" they speak of.
- polymorphist, on 10/12/2007, -13/+233Is it just me or these ads are turning out to be about Vista more than Macs?
- Heembo, on 10/12/2007, -48/+15How come we never see PC adds attack the mac?
- mustard, on 10/12/2007, -39/+129Because PC's don't have to attack Macs.
And saying "buy a PC, or be a trendwhore ponce" doesn't make for good copy. - GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -46/+28I think the bashing-of-Vista's-mutliple-copies is just *****. With OSX, you buy "OSX" and that's it. If you don't want iMovie you don't have to install it but you've still paid for it. With Vista that's no longer the case (it was with XP). What's the problem there? I seriously don't understand why people are complaining that they can choose a version of Vista that they suits them best. People are making it out to be better if Windows would drop all versions except the most-expensive Ultimate and give a lot of people features they don't need, yet still charge for it.
Not only that, they included Starter, Business and Enteprise versions. Along with "Lose a Turn". They really made it seem more ominous than the real selection you have as a consumer [Home Basic, Premium and Ultimate]. - theprez, on 10/12/2007, -33/+73As a Mac user I think these Vista commercials are just a mere distraction meanwhile Leopard has been pushed back all the way to October. Anyone remember "Leopard = Vista 2.0"? At least Vista is out already. I liked iPod ads a lot more than these.
- lou2005, on 10/12/2007, -22/+15Oh, that Vista ad was LOL funny. You don't see too many ads that are that funny. Not even an inside joke. "Didn't you design this?" Very sublime.
All the people I know haven't gotten Vista yet. Mostly they are afraid to take the chance or just don't want to spend the money. sounds a lot like a game show. Maybe they should have used Bob Barker and some doors. PC: Bob, I'll try door number 3. - Jeezoflip, on 10/12/2007, -21/+14@ theprez "At least Vista is out already."
Yeah, your right...after 5 years, and being delayed like 4 times. Leopard has been delayed once (so far), but will probably keep on schedual. And to say the least, apple has pumped out about 4 new versions of OS X during those 5 years. Just a thought... - Ndric, on 10/12/2007, -33/+49http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=macs_cant
- leek, on 10/12/2007, -14/+7@polymorphist
Now that Macs are using Intel architecture, the only thing separating Macs from PCs is the operating system, isn't it? (Well, the cute little boxes as well... but that's not a selling argument for most reasonable people...) - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -19/+41There's no getting round the fact that Vista has too many versions. If they are doing this comparison, maybe people will ask; "why are they doing all this comparing to Vista? Does the Mac OS have less versions or something?" To which someone may reply; "actually it only has one version" (server version aside). The one version thing is a good thing, and is clever, so shoot them for pointing that out. There's no getting over the fact that it's a better set up.
If you are a home user or a professional you still get all the goods, and not only that, the current version of the Mac OS is $129 in any store that sells it, that's an even bigger feature. So you are getting a version of an OS that IMO (and I have Vista installed, don't use it) is more full featured that Vista Ultimate, is easier to use than Home Basic, is safer, is more productive, and is better designed. Sure no OS is perfect, but as of right now the Mac OS is the better choice. And it's cheaper. - Goobersmooch, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4@GawtMilk
120 bucks for everything beats what...400 for everything? - tuzziel, on 10/12/2007, -21/+8- Vista is for dumb people (like me and you) while Mac is for geniuses, right..
- Vista is a full package fattie while Mac is a slim boy, ouch.
- Vista is a party OS, while Mac is obviously a party breaker.. sheesh.
Conclusion:
Those ads makes me buy Vista more then a Mac. - Charlotte_Web, on 10/12/2007, -3/+76"How come we never see PC ads attack the mac?"
Because Windows has something like 90% market share, and the Macs, around 5%. It's Marketing 101.
For Microsoft to run an ad attacking Macs, as much as I'm sure they would like to, it would probably have the opposite effect. Microsoft would be validating the Mac as a viable alternative to Windows to the consumer.
OTOH, Apple benefits by comparing itself to Microsoft, because it makes them seem more mainstream. - SpaceMonkeyZero, on 10/12/2007, -29/+8If I see one more Mac ad stating that PCs are only for spreadsheets, and that Macs are for "fun things like home movies" I'm gonna go VTech on the nearest apple store.
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4@ndric (#6574320)
Grassroots love. People love Macs just as people love Linux - because they work and their updated regularly. - JerodSlay, on 10/12/2007, -3/+45Why do you need a mac genius to setup wireless? I thought it was all easy and *****.
- TomPlansMedia, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3"didn't you make this?"
- jamonterrell, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17@Ireland
We really need a "buried as Mac Fanatic" :-) - Kazbaeden, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14@Ireland
"There's no getting round the fact that Vista has too many versions."
Yeah there are man versions, but I think people make such a big deal of it when it's not. Starter (for developing countries) and Enterprise (for Enterprises) are not available for normal consumers, so that brings it down to 4. Business, by the name, it targeted toward small-largish business. So the consumer is left choosing between Home, Premium, and Ultimate.
Honestly, I think everyone who complains about too many versions of vista should focus their attention on linux, which is reall a mess:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/e1/Linuxdistrotimeline-7.2.png - adjective, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@jerodslay
You'd be suprised. The Geeksquad makes LOTS of money off setting up wireless and even upgrading RAM or other "easy" things. (On PCs, because the one I used to work at didn't handle Macs)
Some people are just not technically gifted... - posure, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I for one would appreciate a professional version of OS X. I'm sick of these training wheels and child-proof gates everywhere.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1They should do an ad where the PC and Mac try to upgrade their video cards. Would love to see a condescending comment by Justin Long about how it's better that he can't upgrade his video card, to be "simpler."
- CheatRZ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@elranzer
Or, perhaps, they would show them with a MacPro.. upgrading the video card =O
- afx1, on 10/12/2007, -82/+9Ha ha... Vista = Fail
- avihappy, on 10/12/2007, -30/+212"On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do I loathe Mac?"
"eleven"
"Oh, she's good, very good."- theMurdocVolta, on 10/12/2007, -81/+44I upgraded to Vista with no problems, I don't know what the big deal is, I like Vista, yea there are way to many versions, but it runs great. All these are is a smear campaign but the girls are too cute.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -28/+114If there really are too many versions, how is it a smear campain to say there are too many versions?
- silverwolfe, on 10/12/2007, -63/+15What I want to know is... What about OS10.1 through .4 (and soon to be .5)?
- AceTracer, on 10/12/2007, -32/+81@silverwolfe
What about them? They were the four sequential versions of OS X that have come out in the six years you were stuck with XP. - strangewill, on 10/12/2007, -22/+23@superkendall:
It's the other 10 billion videos that usually spout barely factual data and skewed results so that I have people that watched a Mac commercial think that they're smarter than a computer scientist with a good 7 years in the industry. Though again, more of the stupid viewer's fault for believing every word of a commercial.
Though the part that makes it smear is that you can easily upgrade between packages, and actually if you know what the HELL you're doing, you know what OS fits you...
Though, yeah... too many versions...
How many SERVER versions on top of that? Those are just home/office use. :( - macmcrae, on 10/12/2007, -30/+26Nothing is quite as sad and somehow evil as a bunch of lemming apple consumers proudly embracing the very mind control that was designed to dupe them into paying too much for regular old intel hardware.
- chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -48/+381. You can kill off Starter and Enterprise
2. Buy a mac and you will get a lot of junk you don't need, also you don't get a lot of stuff you want
3. Having different versions suites different markets, whereas in mac you are forced to get one version
4. Buy a mac and you have to buy a new computer, get vista and you don't have to get a new computer, just a few upgrades
a. hell you don't even need to buy Vista, you can get Linux or stick with Windows XP
Mac is a PC, it uses Intel's processors, basically the same, just runs MacOSX instead of Windows or Linux and costs more money than a PC
They say Mac doesn't have as many problems, but then again mac doesn't have many users to flood out the problems
its like trying to catch fish using only 1 bait, you will only catch 1 fish
if you have a whole bucket of bait you can catch many fish
So me and many others shall conclude, get a mac if you are a complete idiot - Amplix, on 10/12/2007, -22/+83I love _my_ mac but I'm going to have to agree with PC on that one. These commercials are and always have been annoying.
-Loyal Mac User
P.S. to Apple: I find myself liking PC more than Mac in the Get A Mac campaign - Ladon, on 10/12/2007, -35/+17"-costs more money than a PC"
Uh... sure. Except for the part where they cost less for an equally powered computer.
What you're thinking of are ***** computers, the ones that cost 200$. The ones that are made in some random run down warehouse in asia, and you have no idea of the quality of the parts, or who to sue if it doesn't work. An Apple laptop costs less than a Dell laptop with the same specs. Deal with it. - strangewill, on 10/12/2007, -17/+39@chingy1788:
No, you break Apple's EULA if you don't stick OSX on an Apple built machine (think of how it would be like if you could only run Windows on a Dell...)
That is the main difference, and it pisses me off, I was so close to wanting to become an Apple developer (or at least a small time one, just to learn and tinker in another OS with different features), until I found out I'll have to buy myself $700+ worth of hardware straight from Apple, because they wont LET me do virtual machines on a PC (legally).
That is the #1 reason Apple has lost any support as a company I would give to them, thats pretty damn greedy of them.
Though, I still recommend OSX where it's needed, it's an OS, it's got it's good traits, even if it is a product of Apple. Same idea with Windows is okay for some things, even if it's a product of Microsoft...
Seeing parallels yet? - digggggggggg, on 10/12/2007, -17/+19@macmcrae - I thought this was debunked a number of times. Apple hardware has been compared to a variety of competing machines, and the numbers turned out to be pretty even. If you get _every_ component that that comprise the Mac Pro and buy them over Newegg, you'll find that it's just about the same price.
In any case, Apple hardware still fetches a better resale value. On ebay, a 4 year old G5 is still worth $600, better than any other manufacturers' products. - strangewill, on 10/12/2007, -21/+42@ladon:
Dude, seriously I've been building machines for years, dollar for dollar Macs cost more, to say anything else just makes the Mac community look like they're in denial. You're paying for the Apple look and feel, nothing more.
I have a Linux machine that overall is probably worth $400 that will beat any entry level OSX machine you can get. (which are $700 a piece, minus other hardware required/recommended for OSX recommendations). - macmcrae, on 10/12/2007, -17/+6@ digggggggg
That price comparison you are talking about is only for mac pros. I have yet to see the get a mac pro ads.
They would no doubt have to mention that the 4 extra cores are totally wasted. Look at the benchmarks. - silverwolfe, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4@acetracer
Except I was using OSX all that time. :D - rixanon, on 10/12/2007, -15/+2dude i just realized how much apple commercials suck
come out with a two button macbook and i'll buy one
how bout an exploding clown car or idiots spilling on bikes going down slopes?
APPLE, and this wont happen to you! - ggko, on 10/12/2007, -13/+11> Having different versions suites different markets,
> whereas in mac you are forced to get one version
Which still costs less than the cheapest version of Vista.
> Buy a mac and you will get a lot of junk you don't need
Very unscientific comparison here...
The "System" folder on my 10.4 iMac, 1.87 gigs. Add another 5.34 gigs for the Library folder, for a total of 7.21gigs.
The "Windows" folder on my Vista laptop 7.05 gigs. And this is Home Basic, so I'm assuming it is stripped of all "unnecessary bloat." Wonder what Home Premium will bring, nevermind Business or Ultimate. - chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -17/+14at least 7 gigs of vista stuff is useful
like i'm going to make websites for my pets all day - chaersi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11@ladon:
So where are macs made then? - Charlotte_Web, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28"3. Having different versions suites different markets, whereas in mac you are forced to get one version"
I'm currently PC-only, but I've used Macs for two decades. Apple is definitely doing it right.
I'd rather pay one low price of Mac OS X ($129) and get the one version that has everything, than pay $189 for Vista Home, only to find out six months down the line that I need to spend several hundred dollars on an upgrade to the same OS because I need it to do more things now.
Oh, and guess what? OS X doesn't need to be serialized. Which means you don't have to call Apple for a new authorization code just because you upgraded some of the internals. Nor does OS X need to phone home on a regular basis to confirm that I'm not a thief. - Pelapp, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Lol Charlotte. Why do you thin OS X doesn't need to be registred ? Who would pirate it ??
You don't build a machine and the get a copy of OS X of the net, do you ? - Dalrek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@ggko
Using Vista Business and my Windows folder is only 6.93 gigs as size on disk; this isn't a clean install either. - JerodSlay, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6@ Charlotte_Web
In terms of pricing, you don't think they build in the cost of OSX into the rediculously priced hardware? You're paying just as much for OSX as you are for Vista Ultimate. - Kazbaeden, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8@ladon
Designed by Apple in California
Assembled by an Asian in a random a run down warehouse
Sorry to break it to you. - polymorphist, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1lol...you only need to know pi to the fifth decimal to be a genius, eh? I know pi to the tenth decimal by heart before I went to school...that makes me an Einstein, yaahoo!
- wonderchemist, on 10/12/2007, -90/+28Don't these Ad makers know anything about continuity?
In the episode "Surgery" PC was being wheeled in to be upgraded to Vista. Later, in the episode "Security" it is confirmed PC was successful in his upgrade. So why is PC choosing a Vista in "Choose a Vista"?- AxeMAYHEM, on 10/12/2007, -12/+132I don't think the idea is to sit down and watch them end to end like you were watching 24 or Lost.
- Satanael, on 10/12/2007, -8/+98Whoa whoa... this isn't a television series and don't give them any ideas to make it so.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -14/+6I think they subscribe to the Penny Arcade theory of continuity (in that in can be fun, but only once in a while).
- VinceVolker, on 10/12/2007, -17/+10You sir have no idea what the word continuity means, and in what structure it is used in media.
Continuity is used to tell a story in a fluid motion without interruption. These ads are not telling a story, they are making a point. Learn to use big words. - threepio, on 10/12/2007, -16/+13Next on Mac vs PC: A competition to see who can wear a squid on their head the longest. Fun! Fear! LSD!
- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10No Kenny vs. Spenny fans in the house. Alright then.
- PrimoTurbo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Kenny vs Spenny is ***** awesome..
- Burritoking924, on 10/12/2007, -76/+19Oh stfu already. Great, new Get A Mac ads. How exciting. DO you have nothing better to do in your time then to look at Get A Mac Ads that you will see on TV in a day or two.
- markmorow, on 10/12/2007, -12/+97Yep, thats it. I've been waiting for months for some new ones to come out so I can watch them on the apple site. My day has finally arrived. Please don't ruin it.
- DBiz, on 10/12/2007, -43/+9Oh get ***** four-eyes.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -16/+21Well, you don't seem to have anything better to do than read it and then post to complain about it. Physician, heal thyself.
- formergthing, on 10/12/2007, -11/+60I don't watch TV, I'm far too busy making cool slideshows and photobooks. Hey, would you like the see my new photobook? Yea, I made it with iPhoto. It was really simple, just point, click, and print.
- firstpost, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28uuhm, they don't air all around the world, so for many people the apple site is the only place they can see the Mac Ads.
- maddla, on 10/12/2007, -12/+31I have to watch the Mac ads on the Apple website, see, i can't afford TV because I don't have any money after spending it all on my Mac.... oh. wait.
- jxdx, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1You are probably some broke ass soab that can't afford a mac so all you can do is read about them and hate on ppl that enjoy them.
- Heembo, on 10/12/2007, -13/+5Yes, you Apple fanboys have fun with your closed, proprietary system that "just works" (until you get that spinning crap of doom). I and my XP box will have access to software you never dreamed of, since you prefer to sniff Steve jobs butt and take what he gives you out his ass! HAVE FUN!
- dacomputerfreak, on 10/12/2007, -13/+9@Heembo
Yes, you Windows fanboys have fun with your closed, proprietary system that "has access to software you never dreamed of" (until you get hit with a virus, worm, trojan, spyware, adware, malware, rootkit). I and my Mac will continue computing while you're scanning for problems, since you prefer to sniff Steve Ballmer's butt and take what he gives you out his ass! HAVE FUN!
It can go both ways. Heembo, you act like they insulted you personally... don't forget that it's just a computer! LOL - Slovenian6474, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10...let me calculate how much time you've just wasted...
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Hembo: I have access to all the same software. Only I can run it in a window inside an OS I prefer. You don't have any choice about what OS you are running your "dreap apps in". How is no choice superior to choice?
- reyame, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2yes, lets pull out the virus card, because it's really hard for a competent person to protect their computer.. i haven't been infected by anything in years on my PC.. What it boils down to is.. does someone want to pay more for a prettier computer/OS/box?.. that's basically what I get from a mac.. it's prettier..
- mykos, on 10/12/2007, -36/+22I see the self-absorbed pretentiousness machine hasn't run out of steam yet.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -9/+38Well by all means let us know when you do run out of steam, Mr "Too Good for Apple Ads"
- lateralus, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6I know. I thought XP would be the last of it.
- Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -12/+73Well. Apparently the qualifications to be considered a "genius" are somewhat less taxing than I would have suspected.
- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -3/+78She read his MIND man. His MIND!
Also, apparently PC goes to eleven. That's fairly hardcore. - AceTracer, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11I like that girl, she has spunk; could be the new Ellen Feiss.
- strangewill, on 10/12/2007, -36/+8@acetracer:
You like that girl because she has a vag.
Last time I checked, Apple is suppose to be selling Macs, not boners.
BTW: I've seen like ONE girl in any tech department, she was in her late 40s and died recently. Wasn't a huge Mac fan either. - wssharp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19strangewill, that was the biggest bummer of a post i've ever read. everything about it
- strangewill, on 10/12/2007, -13/+6I dunno, I just kind of find it sad that computer marketing has gone the way of "find the hottest chick to sell our new OS" Linux is doing it too... to REAL geeks, it kills credibility about an OS's true potential. You would show them benchmarks, new software and features, not a girl being like "tee-hee, I'm a girl, look at me, sex sells!".
Which goes back to "wow, I missed when the geek movement was really made of REAL geeks, not wannabe geeks"
Oh, and thanks for the flame, please, refrain from being a jerk. - Heembo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14They are called "booth babes" in the conference circuit. SEX SELLS.
- shableep, on 10/12/2007, -12/+18"Last time I checked, Apple is suppose to be selling Macs, not boners."
jesus christ, man. it's a smart woman in respectable clothing. she's not even in a skirt. at least it's not an MTV music video. chill man.
pessimism is like your god damn religion. - gatorsrule21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@threepio

- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5Wheel of Vista was shown during 24. During Heroes, it was Vista party one.
- noblepenguin, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2Her bow legs are bothering me…
- JonForTheWin, on 10/12/2007, -19/+6I don't want to install ***** Quicktime. :-

? - formergthing, on 10/12/2007, -19/+11Oh really? Man things are really simple on my mac. I just point and click and it's all automatic. That's because every mac comes with iQuicktime pre-installed. Sorry to hear about your troubles, Linux.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -21/+3Yes, because Apple Quicktime is a Win32 codec.
And no doubt your Mac supports Quicktime, it was Apple's format grab. They need to give up. Quicktime sucked from day one. - PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -6/+27More like...
Windows: "Dude, Quicktime kinda sucks on my platform..."
Mac: "I'll give you that, but have you ever tried to use Windows Media Player for Mac? Don't bother, Microsoft discontinued it and contracted out the job to a third party."
Linux: "But what about—"
Mac: "Stop right there. You know that someone in that developer community you brag about has already made whatever you're about to ask me for."
EDIT: urusai, QuickTime on the Mac is awesome. It'll encode and decode anything, encapsulate it in a magical, customizable playback file, and look pretty doing it. - rssej, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9The Quicktime engine is a solid format. And stable, which allowed for Final Cut Pro to be more reliable then Premiere (though Premiere Pro has improved on earlier versions. And for the web, i still prefer quicktime over wmv, and if it wasnt for the reliability of wms, i say we wipe wmv off the planet, the codec for mp4 or flash is way better. Back to quicktime, its a fairly decent all around video engine, be it web or uncompressed, a lil better codec support would be nice.
- ggko, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9> have you ever tried to use Windows Media Player for Mac?
I tried using it on my old machine to play a file off a RAM disk.
It said I didn't have enough bandwidth. - JonForTheWin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10HAH, mplayerplug-in turns out to be better than Quicktime. w00t
- bjornski, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2QuickTime is the new RealPlayer.
Bloated, clunky and really bad at what it does (only reason I use it is because it's the standard video player format in Second Life. We're all praying for a Flash player)
And no matter how many times I tell it to stop calling home for updates, it keeps coming up asking me to install that god-awful iTunes *****.
- psylence, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16emerge mplayerplug-in win32codecs
- matthewdestroys, on 10/12/2007, -16/+1lol! 11
- mrspankeh, on 10/12/2007, -34/+58I think these ads have the oppisite effect on me. I feel the mac guy is a hipster loser, while the PC guy is cool and funny.
- lansuggs, on 10/12/2007, -26/+13And they're both douches
- msprout, on 10/12/2007, -10/+76That's probably a side-effect of John Hodgeman being the funniest man on Earth.
- loker269, on 10/12/2007, -4/+41I know they are trying to make him come off as dull and maybe a little stupid but he always seems to be the funnier of the two...the mac just seems nice in a condescending sort of way...
I guess it must just be John Hodgman's ability as an actor/comedian... - choopie911, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Anyone catch John Hodgmans thing in wired? He's a bright/ very, very funny guy.
- Swift2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Gee, that's just the effect they want. If the Windows guy was a jerk, you'd be angry as hell, instead of just angry. So, you get played by one of the funnniest guys on TV. We get played by some guy. Doesn't bother me.
Psst, buy a Mac and be the cool fat guy with a new Mac. That's the message.
- theMurdocVolta, on 10/12/2007, -12/+31That Mac Genius can show me how to Dual boot on my Intel Mac anytime

- Cirrius, on 10/12/2007, -27/+10This is not news. This is an ad campaign.
- Cirrius, on 10/12/2007, -31/+15aaaand the rabid mac fans are digging down any comment that doesn't quote or praise the ad as fast as they can click! or is that the marketing department?

Step away from the computer now and then. Go outside. The sun is not evil.
- hdtvdust, on 10/12/2007, -20/+7It is a sad day in your life when the debut of commercials is considered news to you.
- halvertos, on 10/12/2007, -9/+10no, it's a sad day when you take the time to post a comment such as yours above instead of browsing digg for news...which based on your post would indicate that it's the only reason you're here right? strictly, news.
- Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -6/+39I'm just glad the ads didn't go:
"Hi, I'm a Mac."
"And I'm a PC."
"And I'm Ron Paul." - loggia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I don't know what that means, but it made me laugh.
- choopie911, on 10/12/2007, -5/+37"Didn't you make this..."
- ein125, on 10/12/2007, -15/+10Shouldn't this be in Entertainment news rather than Technology News? After all, they're just ads
Buried for the wrong topic. - caued, on 10/12/2007, -15/+9mac genius?? PCs have that too..... Its called every forum on the internet
- Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21Come on, Mac users, be fair. Calling someone who's a glorified tech support person at a retail outlet a "genius" is at least a TAD disingenuous.
At least "Geek Squad" at Best Buy is more aptly named; one doesn't have to be bright to be a geek, and if you follow the term back to its source, you find it was applied to those who bit the heads off of chickens in freak shows. - jhuggart, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Or 2 hours on the phone with some indian tech support representative that you cannot understand. Nothing against the people of India, I have class with many brilliant ones, you just really can't understand half of what they say.
"thank you, come again" - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Actually a lot of the people I have gone to at the "Genius Bar" actually do know what the hell they are doing. Same for Applecare phone support - I called them with a dead drive, and I was able to explain that the HD simply didn't spin up anymore and the guy (who spoke plain english) understood right away and simply shipped me out a new drive, along with a box to ship back the old one. I didn't have to run a lot of diagnostic software just to prove the drive wasn't on at all as I had to once with Dell support!
The Geek Squad people are just there to collect computers for the people who actually solve problems (some of them know what they are doing as well). The Genius Bar people are not only front-line people, but also are able to fix things on the spot. And they are doing that generally for free. - Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8@superkendal: That's not the point. Even a competent computer tech isn't a genius any more than a guy who can operate an mp3 player is a musical virtuoso.
- Botanicus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@superkendall
I've gotten better support from Netgear and HP/Compaq than my friends have from Apple explaining in the same level of detail. With windows you get error messages. Sure the average person doesn't know what they mean, and that's ok. But I know what it means when it says there is a .dll error or it cannot open a port.
in Mac the only errors I've gotten are the spinny parosol...umbrella...beachball thinggy. or a frown.
- Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21Come on, Mac users, be fair. Calling someone who's a glorified tech support person at a retail outlet a "genius" is at least a TAD disingenuous.
- froinlaven, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17I love John Hodgman.
- SaintStryfe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13If you haven't all ready, get his book, "Areas of my Expertise" - both the regular paper book and the Audio Book. Both have things individually that make them very funny. It's setup as a book of Fake Facts in areas John knows about - for example, Cryptozoology, the history of Hobos, and how to write a book. The Audio Book is especially funny, as he's joined by a singer, who is claimed to have been a feral man who John has tamed to sing as his troubadour on his Audio Book. His lists are often quite funny - For example, insisting there is a 51st state, Arr, which travels around North America and is home to Thunderbirds of Native American Myth, and a piece of Arr and a piece of Kansas was taken to make Arkansas. Just very funny stuff.
- i6koi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"Areas of my expertise" is not as funny as claimed above, I mean, it has its moments, but the audio book tends to drag a bit. Regardless, you can download it free from iTunes (it was a promotion I believe they're still offering to demonstrate their Audiobook selections)
- vonskippy, on 10/12/2007, -28/+6Install Quicktime for a few giggles...um, no thanks.
Hello Apple? It's called FLASH, perhaps you should look into it.- Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4Quicktime is already installed, unlike Flash.
I'll take Quicktime. Look into it. - Bamborzled, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Apple created QuickTime. They obviously would use their own product and not a competitor's.
- strangewill, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3But then again, commercials are made for people that don't own Macs already....
Though then again, who doesn't run Quicktime Alternative at the least...
- Vermifax, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4Quicktime is already installed, unlike Flash.
- VinceVolker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8The point of these ads is not to enlighten the geeks. It's to enlighten the not so computer savy people who have no idea what the major differences are between the two. Now if you were to get HP to make a commercial and say "hey! we've got geniuses too!" then that's a whole nother story. But until now, PC's sell for themselves, pretty much because of monopoly. Macs don't.
- byaselli21, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8Its only a monopoly because macs werent worth ***** before os9, different story now of course.

- hassanchop13, on 10/12/2007, -18/+30i think most of the mac users take care of that.
- chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -14/+22PC wont stoop that low
there are a few, but they don't get on TV
PC is much more mature than Macs, Mac is still at that stage where they think its cool to make a website for their pet fish... - strangewill, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4They did...
Hah, they include Linux and BSD, and it's TOTALLY like real life. Not so much bashing Mac, they bash on all of them, PC's crashing, Mac's ***** software, Linux's annoying whining and "we're open source!", and BSD with "you look like ***** Linux!".
Hilarious, well balanced too...
"What are you doing on that" "Handwriting" "Hey thats kind of like the newton" "No it isn't... and that thing sucked" "Yeah... well..." - ggko, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17Yes, please. Two months with my Vista machine already, someone's gonna have to show me when the "Wow" is going to start. 'Cause I don't see it.
- meshman, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3PC companies aren't that childish. They know, bashing your competition is only making yourself look bad.
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Bash them for what?
"You don't have GAMES LOLZ!!!!11111!!!... oh, you do? *****!"
"UR Missing a BUttin on ur Mowz!!!!!... oh, your not? ... how many!?"
What are the advantages of Windows over Macs, I mean honestly? I used Windows for years, and unless Apple decides to drop their quality level for some reason I'm not going back. This thing just saves me so much time and frustration.
meshman, bashing the competition in a humorous manner connects with the majority of the market. These ads work, probably better than they could ever hope. If they didn't you ladies wouldn't have your panties in a bunch over a comercial.
- hassanchop13, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4i'd much rather pay to upgrade my OS every 3 months then get an operating system that is updated for 5 years and having to pay just once.
- Jibberwalk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4... Whaa? Did you forget your /sarcasm tag?

- aamir2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2"i'd much rather pay to upgrade my OS every 3 months then get an operating system that is updated for 5 years and having to pay just once."
On the contrary, I would rather wait for 10 years before buying an operating system, albeit with the possibility that it will turn out to be a sorry excuse for one, which would be fine, I am in no rush, there is always another one coming 10 years later.
/sarcasm - meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Idiots!
An OS X update is about every 1.5 to 2 years but it costs way less than half the price of Vista. Therefore you get more update goodness for your money and a new OS every two years.
How the hell is that not better?
- newyawker, on 10/12/2007, -14/+10As usual, a bunch of Mac ads that have absolutely nothing to do with computers, and is just baseless PC bashing nonsense.
- geeker819, on 10/12/2007, -11/+10Who really cares about some advertisement from a jealous company? Oh wow, anybody can just throw cheap shots around in an advertisement. Big whoop. Mac is still the little man like usual.

- strangewill, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1No, it's like being bullied by a bully that wears an "LOL I'm a nerd" t-shirt. Those being bullied are the nerds. =

- andycr512, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Perhaps they should air right after the "Hi, I'm a PC running Windows and Microsoft just patched 50 holes and is trying to be hush hush about 150 others..."
- DrinkPaint, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13I can't watch the Mac ads because they cause Quicktime to crash on my PC
The only time Quicktime ever crashes on my computer is when I visit apple.com and try to view a Quicktime video on their site.
It says something about "illegal operation" then crashes.- chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5Thats cause quick time for PC is riddled with errors, theres your real mac programmers for you, they just can't adapt to another environment
- rssej, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3@chingy, quicktime isnt the greatest on my pc but it runs rather fine, too bad i cant say the same with wmv on my mac, and flip4mac is far buggier than quicktime will ever be.

- nestafett, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3except for the people that work at my local mac store are faaaaar from being considered genius, unless you consider someone who reinstalls software and if that doesn't work sends it in a genius
- loggia, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4I think these ads tilt a little too much to the negative and have a little less humor than the others in the series.
Still love Mac, though. - Hamsterpotpies, on 10/12/2007, -12/+7This only shows that Apple cant think of anything better to do then make fun of others. It must be because Apple is scared the PCs are winning.
- funkyshepherd, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I don't think it's a secret that the PCs are winning, Macs can display reports on market share just as well as PCs.
- nestafett, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2@funky, I think the original post was referring to the 90 something percent of the market that windows holds. but maybe macs are winning in the "most rabid fanboy" category
- Morca007, on 10/12/2007, -21/+13Digg- Apple's personal advertising agency.
You people sicken me.- DesertFoxx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12If you don't like apple news then turn it off. Other wise live with Apple Ads and stop bitching.
- TheLoweringTide, on 10/12/2007, -16/+6Is Apple really in a position to criticize someone else about taking a long time to get an operating system released? Last I checked Leopard has been delayed until...what is it, 2037?
- gjzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5October, I heard. ~~~~
- andycr512, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Yeah - I mean, gosh the same thing would NEVER happen to Microsoft - they were right on time, as usual!
(/sarcasm)
- nestafett, on 10/12/2007, -13/+19The ads are clever but they annoy me because alot of them are just wrong. like the one about the camera being compatible with mac and not the pc? I dont know about you but the vast majority of products i see that are only compatible on one are the other way around.
and the one where the p.c was reading a c++ programming guide? I always thought it was better to have your computer more customizable? Didn't macs not even have a command line for a long time?
and the one where he talks about 6 differant versions? I'd rather have differant versions to choose from instead of being stuck with the most expensive no matter what you want. (They have built in cameras on the laptops now? I dont need that and i dont need to be forced to pay for that if i want a mac!)
oh and i know this is quibbling a bit so this isn't that serious of a complaint, but technically aren't they both pc's?
all that being said they are very clever ads and reminiscent of the old vw ads that were genius- flap, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13I agree with you on most of what you said, except the camera compatibility. Many cameras you need to install drivers from the disks to get them going on a PC where as on a mac I have never experienced this.
- strangewill, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4@flap:
Most newer cameras act like a USB drive when plugged in. How it should have been in the first place. :P
At least with XP. - tagliare, on 10/12/2007, -4/+33"I'd rather have differant versions to choose from instead of being stuck with the most expensive no matter what you want."
Most expensive version of Windows: $399.00
Least expensive version of Windows: $199.00
Most expensive version of OSX: $129.00
Least expensive version of OSX: $129.00
Hm... - trakais, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12apparently you have not used a Mac. I have never installed any drivers for anything. Any printer, any camera, - just plug in and it works.
- redxii, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6@tagliare
OS X may only cost $129 but you're forgetting the built-in measures taken to make sure you only use it on certain hardware, so you'd have to buy the hardware too. Unless one is constantly changing motherboards, OEM can be had for $200 or $150 for Business.
I buy an Apple sticker and stick it on my case, technically I wouldn't be violating the license. - aliguana, on 10/12/2007, -9/+9@Taglaire:
least expensive version of OSX: £699
most expensive: £2000+
don't forget, you need to buy the hardware too. Your comparison is only valid if you can run OSX on any old hardware you have lying around. - strangewill, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5I love being dugg down for presenting computer fact.
@redxii:
Does that really complete the needs for the Apple EULA for OSX? That would be nice...
But yeah, starting machine is $600 from Apple, so technically OSX = $600+ $129, while I can stick Windows on just about anything my heart desires, including one of those cheapo $80 MB/CPU combos (which worked perfect, I was amazed).
I've been working on trying to build a starter OSX machine for less than $500 (easy to do for a PC), I'm finding it impossible. - ggko, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11> But yeah, starting machine is $600 from Apple, so technically OSX = $600+ $129
But when you buy that machine, don't you already get the latest version of OS X included? - wyrdness, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2@taglaire - Most expensive version of OS X - $999, though that is the unlimited client edition of OS X Server:
http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/ - fremeer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1hmm last time i checked u have mac osx 10.4.4, 10.4.6, 10.4.8 and now leopard is 10.5 were the upgrades from 10.4.4 to 10.4.6 free? i dont really see mac's as a viable platform so i just dont know. also whats wrong with MS giving so many options to its users, essentially its giving options to business, home and super users. generally most people will get home premium and thats actually quite cheap in OEM form.
Also that just works is the biggest load of ***** i have ever heard!!! u want to know why everythign ***** just works on an apple? Its cause 90% of new hardware is simple ***** USB connections, the only drivers i have had to install on my vista pc are when i got a new 3d card or sound card. Im sick of the ***** just works crap, if it just works then why the ***** do they have tech support *****!!! arggh. PLEASE SHUT THE ***** UP!! hodgeman is also cooler then fag boy - JonnyTrombone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The 'Stuffed' commercial bothers me. I just installed Windows, and between that and my Mac, the Mac has more useless software. Sherlock, iWeb, iMovie, iDvd, iCal- they're all iCrap. Stores like Best Buy and Circuit City install all of that trial software, not Microsoft.
- opnickc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The 'Stuffed' commercial bothers me. I just installed Windows, and between that and my Mac, the Mac has more useless software."
Ah, see the problem is you just installed, Windows, not you just bought a new windows computer.
Apples not attacking Windows directly, they're attacking PC makers. If you were to buy a new machine, you'd agree completely. My laptop must've come with 50+ programs, the vast majority of which were lousy stripped down versions (not even full trials, we're talking CD writing software with every feature grayed out except "Make Music CD" and "Make Data CD"). It literally included apps that were nothing but advertisements and had no functionality. What's more, some wouldn't uninstall (AOL).
Do Macs come with more useless software than a clean windows installation? Probably, but good luck finding a clean windows installation.
- loggia, on 10/12/2007, -13/+27Wow. Some of the comments on here show what many of us already knew: PC users cannot take a joke!
Why so sensitive?- nestafett, on 10/12/2007, -12/+17I know, if only they were as level headed as the apple fanboys!
- dnields, on 10/12/2007, -12/+11The Apple fanboys are by far much more sensitive.
I can't stand ***** Apple Fanboys.... and I've been a Mac user for 22 years. - Nahor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13"Why so sensitive?"
Because:
Microsoft stock: $30.00
Apple stock: $105.00 - Kazbaeden, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@nahor
I'm not a Microsoft apologist or anything, but i just wanted to mention that the price of a stock soley does not denote how a company is performing. MS has many more shares outstanding than Apple, and thus it has a higher martket capitalization. Market capitalization is what traders generally think a company is worth.
Microsoft: 294.94B
Apple: 89.87B
This data clearly reverses your position. - Nahor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Kazbaeden
Actually it doesn't. Not even a little. I own stock in both companies, and since MS has been around 30 buck for years now I am waiting for a slight increase to dump it. So I am not sure what your point is - I guess that stocks not making stockholders money it a good thing. War is peace, freedom is slavery and all that.
- f4nt0m4s, on 10/12/2007, -19/+23Awww crap, I just realized my new Mac doesn't have DX10 and I can't play any computer game that comes out in the next 5 years.
*****.- InitialDMP5, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14you know, that just doesn't work as a diss to apple users. I don't play games on my computer. If I did, I would have a Windows machine. I think its fair to say most mac users also share this view.
I've never been a fan of these commericials, but John Hodgeman is great. He's a mac user as well, so it adds some fun to it all.
And if you think the actor playing a genius looks good, you should check out some of the actual ladies at the apple store. At least the one here in San Francisco. - sheared, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I thought I read that eventually a version of OpenGL will be released that will be able to take advantage of all the new graphic wiz-bang effects of DX10, but not require Vista. This could potentially bring similar effects back to XP and to the Mac. Plus, a Mac user could always install Vista with Boot Camp, if they really wanted to play a particular game bad enough. Or they could just buy the console of their choice, and probably not miss PC gaming too much. Microsoft made sure of that with the 360. That kind of backfired in this case....
- fremeer, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2u know why bootcamp works on macs? because MS arent all bitchy about hardware. come on apple release the software to the open plain of the other 90% of users.
The so called mac genius are ***** stupid, what the ***** is some retard bitch who is essentially a tech support person just the same as all the other ***** tech support people getting called a genius, i guess being female and learning to use a computer makes u a genius now, u know what ***** u whore.
yeah im gonna get dugg down, so while im at it go ***** ur selves with ur better then thou attitude vegans, PETA, mac users, linux users and all the ***** out their that think that doing something personal means u need to ***** tell the world that ur better then them for some ***** reason, i can feel the smug killing the trees already, i hope u ***** are happy. this is ron burgundy goodnight and go ***** ur selves

- pcharles23, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5cmon' big operating system--- Daddy needs a upgrade... LOL

naah... i like bacon and my Miller High Life too much to be a hard core apple fan...
* no class * but i love that commercial lol ...
- banj0, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7Macs are great for people that don't know how to build a computer. My grandmother loves hers. They're not for enthusiasts though. Unless computer enthusiasm passes for email, net, and photos these days. If so, I'll bury myself due to inaccuracy. I always thought it was upgrading when you could, oc'ing when you couldn't, and having a box that was unique in both form factor and number of OS's you had going on.
Not a box that matches the coffee pot.- jxdx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10I built my own computer years ago, I can still build one today, I'm a mac user and I use it because it's the perfect tool for a graphic designer (me). I use a PC to play video games, that's it.
- strangewill, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Where do you get Mac parts? And if you don't get them from Apple don't you break the OSX EULA?
Anyway, if you got a place that doesn't break Apple's EULA, please drop me a message or something. Looking to get a starter Mac for lower than the $700 they want for that MacMini rip off crap. - greenamp, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5It's easy as ***** to build a PC. You're not a ***** super hero b/c you built your own.
- doggo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"It's easy as ***** to build a PC. You're not a ***** super hero b/c you built your own."
True. Doesn't make you a ***** super hero for pointing it out either. - strangewill, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@greenamp:
Whats more impressive is someone that can keep their ***** mouth shut if they have nothing of WORTH to add to a discussion.
- starlord1, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11I'm torn between "Chose a Vista" and "Genius" as my favorite ones, possible ever. This batch is certainly above par. It's a toss up between "Eleven,// Oh She's good." and "Daddy needs an upgrade"
Definitely amused me over my cereal this morning. - mattsfolio, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3"choooosseee a vista!" lol
- breakbread, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6These commercials are full of pretentious and fail.
- silverchrysalis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"full of pretentious and fail"?
i tend to think you might be full of bad grammar and walk.
- silverchrysalis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"full of pretentious and fail"?
- blamslamman, on 10/12/2007, -9/+7Funniest part about this is, Mac has to spend money belittling PC's in their ads, in not 1 do they actually tell you anything about their products.
PC should say, what the ***** is a mac?- nestafett, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3you only talk about your product if thats what you are trying to sell, mac is trying to sell an image or a "feel"
its a shame cause they got a decent product.
but its also a shame that they make it so expensive that not many can afford it.
- nestafett, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3you only talk about your product if thats what you are trying to sell, mac is trying to sell an image or a "feel"
- polymyxin, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5"Choose a Vista" seems a bit misleading. Starter isn't available in the United States. Enterprise isn't available through retail. So, at most, there are four versions of Vista to choose from, and I wouldn't say it's a tough choice for most users. If you're looking for business functionality, choose Business. If you're a home user, choose Home Basic or Premium. If you're a power user, choose Ultimate. The only choice most users will make is between Home Basic and Home Premium.
- rssej, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3point was that if you have a mac, you only have one choice with all the features when it comes time to upgrade.
- nestafett, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2@rss, but if you get a mac your not given any choices at all and stuck with whatever they think you should have. Id prefer to have a cheaper version without all the fancy stuff i dont need. I think that somehow i would get over the crisis of having to choose between 3 boxes =)
- rssej, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@nesta, that argument could go either way. Is it apple depriving you of choice, or is it Microsoft trying to charge you as much as they can for every feature?
- MacParrot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"Id prefer to have a cheaper version without all the fancy stuff i dont need."
That may be true, but the cheapest version of consumer Vista is still more expensive than consumer OS X.
It's a freaking commercial. Commercials are made to make one product seem better than another. Commercials are made to seperate money A from wallet B owned by consumer C.
Use the OS that you're most comfortable with that does the stuff you want to do with your computer. Windows? Congrats. Linux? Way to go. Mac? I'm with ya buddy. Stop obsessing and find time to get a life. - nestafett, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Im not obsessing, just upset.
and osx is cheaper than vista except that you only can use it on one pc, which is a mac, and I cannot find a mac for 400 like my current comp. is. - gfnw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I already have a fairly new, powerful PC. If I want to try Vista, i simply go and purchase it. If I want to try any of the miriad Linux distros, I simply download and install. If I want to try OSX, I have to shell out for a new machine, even though the actual hardware is barely any different to the expensive machine I already own. Apple likes to mock PCs in it's ads, but it doesn't exactly make a compelling case for a current PC user to switch. These ads seem to bolster the ego of those who already own Macs, at the expense of that of the PC users who could be switching to their products.
