- and303, on 04/07/2008, -4/+16It's a cell phone.
...and somehow I'm sick of hearing about it before it was even ANNOUNCED. - incandescent, on 04/07/2008, -1/+4Because none of them are anywhere near as good as the iPhone.
- elcamino, on 04/07/2008, -1/+4maybe because they obviously suck?
- zetsurin, on 04/07/2008, -0/+3True, there's becoming more 3G iPhone hype and speculation than the original hype and speculation for the original iPhone that we had to all originally ensure.
- Neoanarchist, on 04/07/2008, -1/+4Well half that article was interesting. Until they did what every other iPhone conspiracy theorist does and pulls some info out of their ass and correlates it to a possible release. Hoping/guessing/ovulating doesn't make it any ***** truer. Inconclusive, don't give a *****. Just release the ***** thing already.
- Murdats, on 04/07/2008, -1/+4why arent we hearing about all the other smartphones a year before they are released then?
- dinkola, on 04/07/2008, -1/+3Unless it doesnt come out in America first, in which case the FCC has nothing to do with it.
- rspeed, on 04/07/2008, -1/+3As much as the current hubub over the 3G iPhone annoys me, you clearly have a faulty memory.
- Kelmon, on 04/07/2008, -1/+3Can we really call it, and the rest of the smartphones, just a "cell phone" anymore? Cell phones have been with us now for almost 30-years and I think it's fair to say that they tend to do a lot more these days than simply place phone calls. Given that we tend to get excited by gadgets in general I think it's fair to say that the iPhone is just as exciting as anything else despite the fact that it can also dial you a pizza.
- goldentofu, on 04/07/2008, -0/+1What the article doesn't clearly state is that the 3G iPhone could already be submitted to the FCC for testing, and it won't become public record until the device is approved.
- waydee, on 04/07/2008, -2/+3lol fanboys, everything the iPhone does is done better save for looking pretty by established manufacturers like Nokia. The 3G version is the last hope of salvaging a tarnished image in Europe and Asia, after all Apple did attempt to release a phone here that seems to be stuck in 2003 and then priced it far above better offerings (sometimes even available for free) from their rivals.
They've no idea how the mobile phone business works outside of their borders, if you're happy with dated clunky crap like the iPhone then enjoy it but the rest of the world is tired of this hyped up shiny turd. - ThankTheCheese, on 04/07/2008, -0/+1whoooooooooshhh!
- schallis, on 04/07/2008, -2/+3No, no, no it's ***** the RIAA
- theducks, on 04/07/2008, -0/+1FTA: "Apple submitted the original iPhone to the FCC on March 9, 2007. The documents, however, remained confidential until May 17, 2007, about six weeks prior to its launch. "
Given the iPhone is now a shipping product, and everyone knows they will have a new one, they will probably just submit it to the FCC with a letter of confidentiality. - ilgaz, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1I am at Japan now... iPhone cannot EXIST without 3G in Japan. Period.
I can use my Nokia E65 with both DoCoMo and Softbank. Watching the Japanese using their phone and doing unimaginable things even for Europeans I decided... 3G iPhone will be released in Japan. It must have a good camera with it since they use QR 2D barcode for everything (poor E65 can't read them), for the speed of browsing it must have 3G or it is a dead thing from start. Look at speed of my hotel's free connection there

26mbit down, 12 mbit up during rush hour.
You can't sell these people anything lower than 3G.
Oh on topic: FCC doesn't leak things. They are Govt. - hlcno, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1Yah Kevin Rose!
- sirmasterboy, on 04/07/2008, -2/+3The iPhone already has Quad band EDGE right now. It already has 30fps video recording via 3rd party software that has been out for a few months. Also, the locate me feature for the google maps program is plenty of "GPS" for me to get around and find places I need to find. Who can't get around a city unless they have a realtime live update of their location?
- ilgaz, on 04/15/2008, -0/+1I use 3G for first time in my life in Japan, I tell you... SJobs was plain cheap liar on 3G. On GSM/EDGE my phone had 24 hour real life battery life. Here at Japan, even browsing with 3G all time, its battery life DOUBLED.
It is because 3G is a much more modern standard. Apple can't sell anything non 3G at this area. - and303, on 04/07/2008, -0/+1Then obviously you've never tried another PDA, or even looked at the specifications. An HTC Tilt runs circles around an iPhone in every conceivable category.
- DaffyDuck, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1"The 3G version is the last hope of salvaging a tarnished image in Europe and Asia, after all Apple did attempt to release a phone here that seems to be stuck in 2003 and then priced it far above better offerings."
Ahem...
http://idannyb.wordpress.com/2008/04/05/20000-ipho ... - DaffyDuck, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1It's quad band GSM, not EDGE.
- SumYungGuy, on 04/07/2008, -0/+0Calm down Howard Stern...
- jo21, on 04/07/2008, -1/+1it does.. because the SAR rate can't be over 1.6 if over 1.6 i cannot be sold.
- Nuphor, on 04/07/2008, -6/+4***** the FCC
- Trax91, on 04/07/2008, -5/+2Ah, my daily dose of sarcasm! Emm em goodness!
- ericdano, on 04/07/2008, -4/+1The next version is not going to be 3G. It will have dual band Edge. So, the data rate will be double, but it is not "3G". They are going to skip 3G, and come out with a 4G one in 2009 when AT&T has the network in place.
Oh, and it will have a GPS in it......finally. And a 5 megapixel camera. Woohoo. Plus video recording. - stvalentino, on 04/07/2008, -8/+3iPhones always have a lot to add in our daily news ;)
- MacParrot, on 04/07/2008, -9/+4I know that's what Jobs said, but does anyone know when exactly Apple submitted the iPhone to the FCC for approval?
I really wonder if it matters at this point. It's not like everyone interested doesn't know it's coming eventually. If you want an iPhone, get one. If you can't stand the thought that Apple will announce a new product 15 days (one day more than Apple's return policy) after you buy one making yours obviously not work anymore, then don't.
I'm not holding off because it doesn't have 3G or a GPS or some other feature that you want to use as an excuse, I'm holding off because I want more storage than it currently has. I'll make do in the meantime with an 80GB classic and my old crappy phone that just (GASP!) makes calls and costs me nothing beyond my phone plan. - Hrag, on 04/07/2008, -6/+1But... But...
