HOLY CRAP!!!!!
Oh and
"an optical sensor is located on the front of the device so that the user's image may be obtained for videoconferencing while the user views the other video conference participants on the touch screen display"
and thats a quote from the patent - inactive, on 06/05/2008, -4/+76Me over the past few weeks: "Pshhh Apple can't talk me out of another few hundred for a freakin phone.. I'm happy with this one and it'll take some pretty insane features to upgrade this soon"
Me 20 seconds ago: They take pre-orders right?
If they can seriously pull off legit live video conferencing I'm buying one for everyone I know. Just hearing someone is sooo first quarter 2008.
And as much as I dislike AT&T's service, their apparently going to be done rolling out 3G nationwide by the time this is released. The first network to do that. - Mudger, on 06/05/2008, -2/+60Well, there goes cheating on your wife/gf
"Honey, I told you, I'm with the boys"
"Liar, put on video conference."
** Hangs up - fallen1004, on 06/05/2008, -1/+37This puts a new spin on phone-sex.
- coachmcguirk, on 06/05/2008, -3/+34Duke Nukem Forever video AND more 3G iPhone info?
Is today my birthday?.. - Buzzby, on 06/05/2008, -3/+34Flash as well!
...bring on monday! - mattluiz, on 08/28/2009, -4/+27That's what she said.
- bryannnnn, on 06/05/2008, -3/+25this is so huge.
- phrenzy, on 06/05/2008, -6/+18... funny how it the "iPhone killer" turned out to be... the next "iPhone"
Angry apple-hating nerds are going to have to get used to seeing the Apple logo even more, and to biting their condescending tongue every time they see some hot girl whip out an iPhone / MacBook.
Man, we've come a LONG way since 1997. You laughing now? - whamdanglers, on 06/05/2008, -0/+12@Jacs02056, angrycat:
You should probably have read the patent.
"...an optical sensor is located on the front of the device so that the user's image may be obtained for videoconferencing while the user views the other video conference participants on the touch screen display."
Sounds like a different sensor to me. - ho0ber, on 06/05/2008, -0/+10I dunno, I'd really like a good GPS for a bunch of reasons. I know you all probably get sterilizingly good reception everywhere, but AT&T has rather shoddy coverage all over my home state. I'd love to be able to use the GPS function and a built in coverage map to figure out where I need to go to get coverage again.
I also think that they could really enhance the maps app with Tom Tom or Garmin-like as-you-drive updating and directions.
But yeah, I guess I'm also OCD and would like to be able to know where I am within 15 feet at all times. - Ex3poo, on 06/06/2008, -1/+11Kevin Rose Already Told me this
- laserob, on 06/05/2008, -2/+9I agree. The current location features are good enough for me. I'd much rather have these features. However a couple of my geographically-challenged friends are longing for it. To each his own I guess.
- sonicularulus, on 06/06/2008, -2/+9Apple is just bringing the rest of the world's cellphone technology to the US...
nothing special... - kertong, on 06/05/2008, -1/+7I have reason to believe that the 3G chip in iphone 2.0 will also do gps on the same chip. No need for an add on. Time will tell!
I would also prefer GPS over triangulation - with GPS, you have the accuracy and latency to a point where you can do turn by turn navigation - something the triangulation can't do. I can almost hear garmin/tomtom shaking in their boots.. - ouzome, on 06/05/2008, -0/+6Hello!.... mfgs throw tons of stuff in patents that never see the light of day, just to protect themselves in case said stuff does see light from day.
- inactive, on 06/05/2008, -3/+9Video calls are pretty much the 'future dream' of people living in 1996. When we realized that it was dumb, we ditched that idea. The beauty of an audio-only call is that I don't have to be dressed.
- jcannonb, on 06/05/2008, -0/+5You are really disconnected aren't you? Its not just the features, it is the wonderfully attractive package it comes in. No other phone is as sleek, elegant or user friendly as the iPhone.
- PabloMac, on 06/05/2008, -0/+5And you don't have to keep your unibrow shaved.
- phoomp, on 06/05/2008, -0/+5Just remember, not everything in a patent application makes it into the final product.
- judicar, on 06/05/2008, -0/+5get a room
- dibby1, on 06/05/2008, -1/+5get ready to feel the thunder!
- treed, on 06/05/2008, -0/+4Check out pages 82 and 83. Apple seems to be conflating IM with SMS. (82 shows a contact card with an Instant Message button; 83 has a menu that pops up and asks which phone number you want to IM the guy at.)
- eldinb, on 08/09/2008, -1/+5More like 200$ according to Kevin Rose.. sounds too cheap to be true
http://seesmic.com/videos/0F7xc810bb - phrenzy, on 06/06/2008, -0/+4only an apple-hating-angry-nerd would make the ridiculous statement that the iPhone doesn't compete with "top phones" The iPhone *IS* a "top phone".
Why would you say this when you know it makes you look like a fool, even to those who agree with you? - treed, on 06/06/2008, -0/+3Pretty sure he also said that they're not working on a phone, too.
- masterc, on 06/05/2008, -0/+3I don't think you all realize that we all know not to click on any video ending with uuiU.
- Buzzby, on 06/05/2008, -2/+5"Also detailed in the application is support for inline media, including Flash and Windows Media."
First post in the comments from macrumours. - treed, on 06/05/2008, -1/+4Good to know?
- JerzyBricklayr, on 06/06/2008, -0/+3omg... time for new pants.
- colto, on 06/06/2008, -0/+3Full price is most likely. Sorry chap.
- egthareal, on 06/05/2008, -0/+3Important question:
How do I back my old iphone up so i can quick transfer to the new one?
I gotta ebay this old one tonight to get cash for the new guy ;) - afx1, on 06/05/2008, -0/+3please light a match after
- tnoy, on 06/06/2008, -0/+3Any digger can get phone sex.. its only a couple dollars a minute now.
- ouzome, on 06/05/2008, -0/+2No, they are saying the "sensor" in the front will allow for video teleconference. i.e. camera
- Alex.w, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2Why wouldn't that be able to? Every one else has for the last few years now. Also, unless there is something very much wrong with you.. you will not use the video conferencing more than once.
My freind uses it to show his girlfriend what is in the fridge to drink. That is the only use I have every heard any one putting video calls/conferencing to on a cell phone, and we have had the tech for what seems like forever! - DaffyDuck, on 06/06/2008, -1/+3"How do you know that??"
He made it up. - Twinnie, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2FILED in 2007, only just gone through.
- Axxion, on 06/05/2008, -0/+2i have a question: do you think apple will give a special deal if u already own and iPhone to where u will get a discount or something for a 3G iPhone, or do you think u will have to pay full price if u want the 3G?
- kertong, on 06/05/2008, -0/+2We meant - cell tower traigulation vs. passive gps satellite triangulation. You can figure it out if you know how to read between the lines. :)
- guydudeman, on 06/05/2008, -0/+2ok, I admit it, i chuckled.
- inactive, on 06/05/2008, -0/+2GPS is the deal maker or breaker for me. I've only had my iPhone since the price drop, so I won't be jumping right on this new one (plus, no 3G where I live), but I've always wanted a proper GPS device, and if this has the features I was looking for in a TomTom or whatever, I'll use my GPS money for an upgrade. Maybe eBay my unlocked 'old' iPhone, too.
- treed, on 06/05/2008, -0/+2Page 26 after you click on the images shows the camera app with video and timer functions.
Edit: Page 52 also shows the Video playing app and a category called "My Movies", presumably for those made with the iPhone itself.
Edit Again: Page 53 disproves the idea I had about "My Movies". Whoops. - inactive, on 06/05/2008, -0/+2And words that came directly out of Stevie J's mouth were "No flash ever."
- skotski, on 06/05/2008, -0/+2Yeah, but you're talking to a bunch of Diggers. Phone sex only works if there is a willing participant on the other end of the line.
- angrycat, on 06/05/2008, -2/+4Yep, that's how it knows to turn the screen off when you put it up to your ear so you don't start pushing random buttons with your ear.
- Axxion, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2damn, i hope it is at least cheaper than before, ahh now i have to save my money. =(
- bdawg923, on 06/06/2008, -0/+2This was news like a week ago when it was claimed this was the 1st gen iPhone patent. Filed September 2007.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/30/the-iphone-pate ... - xoineg, on 06/05/2008, -0/+2just sync to itunes man!!!...remember to restore your iphone first but dont activate
