PC: And I'm a Mac too. - Topher06, on 11/16/2007, -5/+32Mac: Hi, I am a Mac.
PC: Your a f*cking Intel PC and we all know it, get over yourself. - jjjjjjb, on 11/16/2007, -0/+27Here's the original article, with the original images and answers by the person who did the hack to various questions:
http://uneasysilence.com/archive/2007/11/12654/ - skeen07, on 11/16/2007, -2/+20No, it's still PC vs Mac. As if regular home users are going to create a Hackintosh PC.
- Lane, on 11/16/2007, -3/+21Wow, they don't even bother to tell if this is actually useful. I'd be very tempted to blow some change to try it out but I bet it' runs like watching paint dry.
- LoganT, on 11/16/2007, -0/+14Installed fine. Runs like ***** and doesn't support anything (wireless, audio, etc).
- se7en11, on 11/16/2007, -1/+14$399?
- jordn, on 11/16/2007, -0/+12just installed. Its hardly worth it. barely anything works and its dog slow.
- podgey22, on 11/16/2007, -1/+11Why are you people burying this comment? It's true! Like 80% of other gawker submissions to digg. Proper post:
http://uneasysilence.com/archive/2007/11/12654/ - inactive, on 11/16/2007, -1/+11For $399, I'll wait for Everex to put out their sub-$300 gPC laptop.
Asus had every right to jack up the price to $399; you'd almost think they were Wii's, the way they're selling (at least on Amazon). But they lost me when they dropped the drive size AND doubled the price. - valkyries, on 11/16/2007, -5/+14my ibook(last generation) can barley run osx10.4/.5 and they want to run OSx on something even slower
- Scyth3, on 11/16/2007, -2/+11I just wanted to say that many of Apple's notebook internals are created by Asus. So, get off your high pedestal of "It's not a mac, it's still a PC" -- because your super-specialized Apple notebook uses many of the same components as every other laptop made. Only difference, is Apple creates the casing and tunes its software to work specifically on its specified hardware set.
How can I confirm that it's indeed Asus parts in your Apple notebook? Well, my Asus u3s laptop lists as an Apple under linux. The monitor is an Apple LCD too apparently. - inactive, on 11/16/2007, -3/+11You can run Vista on the EEE PC as well, it runs much much faster than OSX.
- jmpeagle, on 11/16/2007, -4/+12I buried yours and dugg this one because that is how I roll
- Psykus2, on 11/16/2007, -16/+24Blog spam :(
- chrislee149, on 11/16/2007, -0/+7And this is why Mac users have horrible stereotyped reputations.
- inactive, on 11/16/2007, -1/+8its actually true people. Vista runs pretty well on the EEE. there was even a digg about it a last week.
- CodeCobalt, on 11/16/2007, -2/+9You now don't need to make your own pc which isn't hard to anyways... However, I'd hardly say that a PC runs OSX better than a mac, and that a mac runs windows better than a PC. There's no real evidence yet of the PC running OSX better.
Plus, macs don't run XP better, just the hardware that its been tested on has generally been high end macs, costing in the thousands, where as the average XP machine costs between $500-$800 - aznhomig, on 11/16/2007, -2/+9I had no idea that Apple can put you in prison. Have they become that powerful now?
- getoffmybridge, on 05/05/2009, -0/+6Did you go with the 1,274 5.25 floppy disk install?
- inactive, on 11/16/2007, -2/+7I can imagine that it runs really really slow. probably like running it in vmware. Still a good idea though, maybe with a dual core Eee
- blackmage439, on 11/16/2007, -0/+5"The method more or less follows Adam Pash's awesome Hackintosh tutorial over at Lifehacker..."
"Awesome" is not the word I would use to describe a hack that forces you to leave the Mac OS DVD in the optical drive for a successful bootup. I would call that a half-assed and gimped attempt. It's a great idea, but until I see a better work around, Mac OS will stay on Mac hardware for me. - Elranzer, on 11/16/2007, -0/+5From the Wiki on Eee PC:
"The Eee PC uses a solid-state drive for storage (instead of a hard drive) which consumes less power, allows the device to boot quickly and makes it less susceptible to shock damage. The SSD disk is ***permanently soldered*** to the board, to save space by reducing the wiring needed."
Since it's eventual that the OS's cache, swapfiles and logs, etc will kill off the Flash memory in one or two years, but since you can't replace it, doesn't the make this laptop more or less disposable? - YuriSakazaki, on 11/16/2007, -3/+7And it only took me 6 days! Sucks that I had to mail in my DVD copy for them to ship the floppies in a crate, though :(
- Internetish, on 11/16/2007, -0/+4Ultraslow Apple Laptop .
- Urusai, on 11/16/2007, -4/+8Hire people to count the money? You mean, like accountants? I guess the days of Jobs storing it all in a jar buried in his back yard are over.
- mauri824, on 11/16/2007, -1/+4actually, you just need sse2, and the celeron m supports sse2 ;)
- fuzzynyanko, on 11/16/2007, -0/+3That'd be an interesting headline.
- fuzzynyanko, on 11/16/2007, -0/+3You see: Mac users like you can afford a BMW. If most Americans buy a BMW, it takes out money for other things like rent, food and child support.
- bigsteve, on 11/16/2007, -1/+4What's "Linux PC hardware?"
- BEDrocko, on 11/16/2007, -1/+3funny that's the retail cost of a new Vista Ultimate installation... a few years in prison? yea... I'd call it that.
- chad78, on 11/17/2007, -0/+2Could you spare some change, Mister? I mean, if $399 is change to you, I'd be happy to make your pockets less heavy
- dezman2003, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2Since the EEE was mentioned enough PC users are in here to counter balance the mac retards.
- chrislee149, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2At least by the way I intended it, a PC that runs a Linux-based operating system by default.
- dezman2003, on 11/17/2007, -0/+2I like Macintards better can I use that instead?
- dezman2003, on 11/16/2007, -1/+3Quiet you it's funny when people think that an OS is related to the hardware a machine uses in some magical way, don't ruin my amusement by educating them.
(old macs excluded from comment) - BEDrocko, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2@Skeen... Normally I'm not fond of the PC vs. Mac debate, they have their pros and cons and if people can't see that they're blind.
However, you're right on in saying that the average user isn't going to build a hackintosh. It's much the same reason why you can't compare cost effectiveness between Apple Comps and home builts....
I see far too often people talking about the Apple tax and compare a pre-made Apple system to something they built. Of course the pre-made will be more, there's labor and support, both on the hardware and software side of the computer you don't have to pay for with a home-built.
I don't see computer builders complaining about the "Dell tax"...It's there, and it's the same exact thing.
I use large variety of systems and platforms and I won't lie; I enjoy the Mac the most as I am far more productive on that machine than any others. - Tippis, on 11/16/2007, -1/+3...it also makes all those "ultra-compact MacBook" rumors afar more interesting...
- bigsteve, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2Like almost every "Hackintosh" that wasn't spec'd out expressly for installing a hacked OS X?
- flux1, on 11/16/2007, -1/+3I'm surprised your comment hasn't been buried to oblivion. Saying Windows (especially Vista) is faster than OS X on the same exact hardware, even with proof, is usually attacked viciously by the mindless mobs.
- chrislee149, on 11/16/2007, -2/+4I'm not really sure why you think that the creator of Windows software has anything to do with Linux PC hardware running an Apple OS.
- Psichomofo, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1where can I get a triple E pc.
- DirtyBrowncoat, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1Maybe I missed something here, but how is OS X installed with only 4GB of storage? I didn't see anything about this in the article. Is this done with an external hard drive? Great little experiment, though.
- surfing, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1because it didn't come with the stickers?
- SeaOtter, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1I've got one. It's mad stupid fun; I love the thing! The OS is customized version of Xandros, and the GUI is a tweaked version of IceWM. Others have already installed other linuxes on it as well as KDE, Gnome, and even (sort of) gotten Compiz working. I'm in the process of being nerdy myself and installing LAMP on it.
There's already a cult of blogs and forums. The most useful and active user community I've found is eeeuser.com, so if you really want to learn more about the machine and OS, head over there. - aliceinreality, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1shouldn't we expect Vista to run better? after all, the whole point of the Mac is the total package: hardware + software.
as a "Macintard", it hardly offends me that you can't run OS X faster on a non-Mac than you can on a Mac. in fact, i've been under the impression that that sort of thing was built into OS X for the specific purpose of forcing you to use Apple hardware. - chad78, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1Buy.com has the new black ones for $399 - free shipping.
- getoffmybridge, on 05/05/2009, -0/+1Why don't you go out and get a job you lazy bum? ***** longhaireds.....
- londubh, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1cool.
- chad78, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1This is the definition of blogspam - it's a post about a post about the actual content. Dugg only because it's the only one I could find on digg. But, submitters, please DIGG THE SOURCE!
