- mikev, on 10/12/2007, -15/+109the ads are entertaining but they aren't that different. they just seem to be saying the same message over and over again. pcs are insecure, macs are good for artsy stuff. i wish they would highlight some of the great OS X features rather the faults of the competition
- Bahimiron, on 10/12/2007, -10/+63Oh boy, advertisements!
Hey, the used Ford dealer near me has an awesome new commercial where the guy dresses up as a king and shouts, "I am the king of savings! Come down and get the royal treatment!" Can I Digg that? - sidebuster, on 10/12/2007, -11/+54When are we going to see the commercial where the pc is a giant mech and the mac says i can draw pictrues and stuff gurr gurr derr, and the pc just steps on the mac and says so can I bitch.
- pathy, on 10/12/2007, -12/+40Competition is good. It's good that Apple are gaining popularity.
THEY'RE ***** LYING THOUGH. Just insulting Microsoft because they are Microsoft is NOT a good reason to. Macs have their own problems, and I would say that one of the major ones is the air of ***** arrogance that goes along with it - And these ads just ***** spawn more of it. - Sprules04, on 10/12/2007, -10/+37*yawn
- Haohmaru, on 10/12/2007, -9/+32Tell me about it. I saw "Flashback" last night.
"Hey, let's make PC use a calculator."
"Yeah! Let's have him use it TWICE!" - GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -7/+30@brihar73
None of them are winning too many awards. Don't beat around the bush. PCs are better than Macs for gaming. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24i'm actually a big fan of these ads (mostly because john hodgman is hysterical), but i think it's time for steve to call up chiat|day and order up a new campaign. these are getting a little thin.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+26When the hell is Apple going to update the Mac mini's!!!!?!!!
- aussieNickuss, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24I've never seen a cryptic message on my Mac but the problem is actually that Mac's don't tell you whats wrong when something does go wrong.
- mindsnare, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22I'm a mac fan but.....Macs DO get those cryptic error messages.....that's how you work out what the problem is, weird
- meshman, on 10/12/2007, -8/+25Apple users don't like it when PC users toss out the old "it doesn't have games" and "it only has a one button mouse" lines because they're old and childish. So how do you think PC users feel to hear the garbage spewed in these juvenile ads? How does this help? Do you vote for the political candidate that does nothing but attack their opponent or the one that promotes what they'll do to improve things? In other words, why can't Apple just demonstrate why they have a good product and where it can be used, rather than why Windows sucks? Why should I buy a Mac? Because it's productive? Because it's the best for print and broadcast video? Because it's secure? Lets ask Apple:
"Why should I buy a Mac?"
"Because Windows sucks"
"Ok, but what can the Mac do for me?"
"Well, Windows sucks."
"Yeah, but what programs are available?"
"Lots. And Windows sucks."
"Ok, why does Windows suck?"
"Because the Mac is better"?
"Why is the Mac better?"
"Because Windows sucks"
*sigh* I'll take a PC then. - Cramit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Cryptic error messages on a mac? I usually just get the app disappearing and a useless but very plain "APP has quit unexpectedly" message. Very clear but absolutely useless.
- Haohmaru, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Use Quicktime Alternative. It doesn't bundle iTunes and works better IMO.
- a0me, on 10/12/2007, -8/+22Most of the best-sellers are available on Mac: World of Warcraft, The Sims 2, RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, Doom 3, Age of Empires III, Civilization IV, Unreal Tournament 2004, Prey, etc...
Sure that won't really impress any hard-core gamer, but that will keep busy most casual and middle-ground gamers. - zigziggityzoo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16How about an error like:
Error: Win32.dll was not found
Error: dydrr.dll was not found.
Error 1719: The Windows Installer service could not be accessed
That's a few I've seen on my windows box in the past. Yeah, those are real clear. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21[PC arrives with a group of friends]
PC: Hey mac, we're all gonna go play this new FPS. Wanna join?
Mac: Game? I...I don't know what you're referring to...
PC: Oh, you can't play it, huh? Well...you...well, you can watch if you'd like.
Mac: No, no...I'm probably just gonna stay in and paint stuff...and cut myself.
PC: ...
Mac: FASCISTS!! - WATYF, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14@zigziggityzoo
I know you were being sarcastic, but yes, I would rather get an error like that. If the error gives me a file name (specifically a dll) and an Error number, then there's a very good chance that I can Google it and find other people who have had the same error and learn how they fixed it (or look up a MS KB article about it, or whatever).
An error like "APP has quit unexpectedly" is not only unclear, but completely useless to boot.
Granted, I think exception information on Macs *and* PCs could be improved. But the lesser of two evils is on Windows, I believe. - GiggleStick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Shouldn't the error be "Something just DIDN"T work!"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19Uh oh, a company puts out a commercial. Stop the ***** presses.
- prammy, on 10/12/2007, -14/+25@fragout:
Heh I managed a few macs in a past job and to say that Macs don't crash as often is incorrect. I managed around 15 Macs (around 5-7 years ago) and quite a few of them crashed and/or locked up pretty often. The biggest culprits were the Cubes though.
And as for the mac ads? I think those ads can basically be categorized under the term 'FUD'. - Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -38/+49No, they're not balenced and factual, they're just wrong.
Three games, that'll keep us entertained. - Mofassa, on 10/12/2007, -15/+25Am I the only one who is actually turned off by attack ads like this (or I see them as attack ads)?
To me all they indicate is that the company can't promote their own product enough, so they decide to attack another. I am by no means saying apples aren't worth the buy, but rather that to me it's ineffective. I grew a huge distaste for Pepsi after their range of ads that simply made fun of Coke - for no reason what so ever. Coke's commercials? Just some people hanging out having fun...and cute little polar bears.
I see Apple's ads, and think to myself "do they have nothing else to gloat about other than that they are trying to tell me what I use my PC for?" Bah...but then again, I'm probably not their target market (being the generic uninformed computer user I think) - colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18"Heh I managed a few macs in a past job and to say that Macs don't crash as often is incorrect. Sounds like you were managing OS 9 which doesn't exist anymore? - Dumbledorito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The best car ad ever was for "Big Bill Hell in Baltimore":
http://www.devilducky.com/media/56368/
NSFW due to language. - dsaint, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11What is the deal with the calculator? OS X comes with the excellent Grapher app. I've done more math homework on OS X than Windows. I wish my graphing calculator were as easy to use as Grapher.
- WATYF, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10@Pathy
I agree. Case in point... click on the link above to see the videos. What's the first thing you see? A blurb that says:
"Every Mac comes with iLife, a suite of software that transforms your photos, music, and videos into all kinds of projects. How many PC applications can do that?"
To which the answer is, "ALL FREAKING KINDS OF THEM". Not only does Windows handle video and photos and music by default (with its built in features), but with a two second Google search you can find and download one of about.. oh... I dunno... a BILLION other "PC applications" to play with "photos, music, and videos" if you don't like the ones that Windows offers. And many of those apps are free.
Seriously, they really need to get off of the "we're the only platform that can do music and movies" mantra, because it's so blatantly false, that the viewer (if they're a PC user) must feel at least a bit insulted every time they see it. - guimonkey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Dell guy says it time for a new ad campaign
- Miniman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Macs dont get Cryptic error messages my ass
http://www.files.iabpro.net/uploads/0405071922.jpg - PURDooM, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Yeah. I can't count the number of times I have seen "Error joining to Airport Network". WTF HAPPENED!? Was there no communication? Did we fail to get a DHCP packet?
- xgisbert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Don't get me wrong, I've been a Mac user for about 15 years now... but I find these commercials somewhat offensive and a lack of good taste.
- gr3i, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9These ads have generally been pretty lame, but the "Computer Cart" one and the "Security" one I feel were quite well thought out and got their message across quite well. I'm currently an Apple user though have worked on and with PC's for a very long time with mixed results. Experiences like those in "Computer Cart" are specifically what got me thinking about changing platforms and now, 4 years down the track I'm still glad I have.
Regardless of what platform you use, I still rate these "I'm a Mac" ads far higher than the Vista "Wow" ads that are running non-stop on TV. - dagr8tim, on 10/12/2007, -16/+21I'm going to get dug down, but buried because they are only in quicktime format.
- WATYF, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13What is the deal with the "calculator" angle? Is Apple saying that all Windows offers you is a calculator? Are they somehow oblivious to Media Center? And Movie Maker? And WMP? And, of course, Paint. ;o)
- colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"When the downed system is back most likely the problem is hardware (the same failures will be seen by Apple as they use standard drives and memory) so that can be troubleshooted or if it is software then the box can be reimaged with Altiris, Norton Ghost, Xenworks (HEY MAC WHERE IS YOUR ENTERPRISE LEVEL DEPLOYMENT SOLUTION!?!?!?!)."
NetRestore, Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper, Radmind?
"I can have a system rebuilt remotely and ready to use over the lunch hour (HEY MAC WHERE YOU AT?)."
NetInstall, NetBoot, Radmind?
"Oh and if I want to replace a hard drive or memory I don't have to spend a friggin half hour to get the damn case open."
Screwdriver?
"The only people letting the wool get pulled over their eyes by this ad if of the sort that have never seen a good admin and utils at work. Chew on that."
As a Mac admin, you sir, are an idiot. - WATYF, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9@Squidly
That's the biggest problem with the ads, though. That's not true. Macs aren't inherently better at video and photos and what not, and Windows isn't "incapable" of doing those things. It's the completely false premise that "Windows is ONLY for business" that makes those ads so insulting to a PC user's intelligence. - evanstapler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Because of Apple's new ad campaign, I now see Apple as this:
Arrogant and cocky.
I tend to avoid arrogant and cocky people, so I'll do the same with companies. - hidetoshi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I hate these smarmy adverts. Funny that the mac is a pretentious show-off while the PC is understated and just does its job.
- nelliott, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5First off, I am NOT a windows user.
I just find it hilarious that mac mounting a full on smear campaign against windows is notable for the front page of digg, but if microsoft were to launch a full on ad campaign based on mac's flaws, chances are the pitchforks and torches would have already been broken out. - orbit1979, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I enjoyed "computer cart", that was so true like 7 years ago. "flashback" was good too, most people don't build web-sites and make home movies every day, so it is for most people, a waste of time.
- WhatKindaBat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Finally, someone points out the truth.
- webmacster87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think the Computer Cart ad is okay myself. Kinda funny. The Flashback ad didn't really do it for me though, and it's kinda weird.
I don't know, to me, the Get a Mac ads don't have the kind of flair that they had when they first started coming out. I often go back to older ones and get a lot more laughs from them. Not to mention that the Mac guy actually gets good lines in the older ones. - Smills, on 10/12/2007, -30/+34I have had computers with Microsoft OS's for my entire life, my first computer had DOS. Second had 3.1. Third had 98 SE. Fourth had XP and current has Vista Ultimate x64.
My XP computer rarely crashed, and I had very few problems with it. My DOS computer was completely stable. My windows 98 was the worst, that crashed relatively often, that's why i replaced with XP the day it came out. and my Vista computer (which i have had since the day it came out) has not crashed once yet, or even errored.
I have used Macs for around 12 hours in total over the last year. (at uni when all the PC's are gone, and at one of my friends houses, etc) The first time i used it this year it didn't recognize my MP3 Player properly, or my Digital camera. I couldn't get software for my digital camera so it could, and god forbid even a mentioning of gaming. Also, the GUI is awful when it comes to running 2 different programs side by side on the screen.
When i tried to access my mobile phone the mac froze on me for about 5 mins and finally gave an error message afterwards. I just don't see what is so great about them.
PC's just work when you plug different cameras or peripherals into them, and automatically install the hardware and everything. Much easier in my opinion.
I know i am going to get massively dugg down by mac fanboys but keep in mind this is my interpretation and not everyones experience will be the same (obviously or macs would not be selling) - hoos30, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4With the "Flashback" ad, the "Get a Mac" campaign has officially jumped the shark.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Apple as a company is my problem - not their OS - if there were a clear cut winner about which OS was better we wouldnt have the debate. Hardware wise macs and PCs are basically the same thing now especially with the switch to intel based machines. I have used both and a macbook pro running WINDOWS XP AND VISTA actually performs better on benchmark testing and you can literally see it in front of your eyes. Why? Because they are the same animal now. It is an OS war - not a hardware war - and thats what most people seem to miss.
honest opinion on the commercials is that Apple once again shows how they are not very creative with their advertising and only know how to blindly attack the competition. - xeno439, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The third one "Security" is actually funny for a change. Cancel or Allow? Loved it.
- ISEEDEADPEOPLE, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Have to say I prefer the English ones
http://www.apple.com/uk/getamac/ads/ - 87ex, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Only 3 games?
Just install Windows on ANY new and you can play any games you'd like (HL², Counter-Strike:Source, F.E.A.R, and whatever-the-f^ck else), under Windows (XP and Vista works with Bootcamp - and yes, I have tried both).
Not trying to be a dick or anything, but just letting you know that it's possible to run any game a PC can run on the Intel chip-based 's.
It would be pretty damn sweet if you could run all these games natively in OS X, though... - chalkboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@laserblazer (#6120779)
Actually the MacBook is very well priced. Any other company with similar specs will be priced very close or more. I think the macbook is a very good deal. What they need is a cheap celeron notebook like the $600 dollar laptops that dell has. I do not own a mac. I have never owned a mac. I have never used OS X But I am looking for a new laptop and the macbook looks like a pretty nice deal to me. I would install windows on it of course.
The rest of the lineup from mac looks a little high priced to me. - gregfadein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What IS up with Digg users digging this, and digging that. It's almost like there were, I dunno, USING Digg.
What nonsense. -
