- vinny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Overpricing is typical Apple. Figure out a fair price, then add 50%.
This should be $99, Shuffle should be $49, 2GB nano should be $135, 4 GB should be $170, 30 GB should be $199. THAT's the sweet spot, and if Apple weren't so in to building an elitist image, that's where their profit and sales would be maximized."
I wonder why Steve Jobs doesn't take your advice? Maybe it's because they are already selling an amazing amount of them at the current price? Have you seen the sales figures? Do you have an MBA or something that qualifies to give any kind of advice on marketing? If you think they are overpriced, don't buy one and get out of the way because there is a line behind you. - zeppelin06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Did anyone else notice that Monday apple stock dropped more than six percent, then Tuesday morning they release a new ipod?
What else may they have that they are waiting to release whenever the stock dives? - ckoerner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't know if it's been mentioned, but the educational pricing is only $129!
Sweet Ass. - shockingbird, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Is it possible to load your music on there through any other software?"
Yes.
ml_ipod is a plug for Winamp that will transfer your songs from within WInamp.:
http://www.winamp.com/plugins/details.php?id=138888 - DonLapre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The 512mb shuffle has dropped to $69.99 and the 1gb to $99.99.
- dognose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can not find a 1GB mp3 player as small as the ipod that costs under 100.
Apple isn't over priced. It's the others. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"What's the point when for just 50 bucks more ya can get 2 gigs? STUPID! "
Then after that you'll say, What's the point for 50 bucks more than that you can get 4 gigs? STUPID! And then your spending $250 instead of $150 - Phoenixfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah Odweaver, I understand. Innovation sucks don't it? How dare Apple improve it's product line with out advance notice and not giving their competitors a chance to play catch up. Shame on you Apple. (insert sarcasm here.)
- geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2zeppelin: Apple is ***NOTORIOUS*** for releasing things on Tuesdays. It's a signature thing of theirs. That's why often a lot of people will check the site on Tuesday to see if it's online, if it goes down, they're adding something.
I'm rather certain their stock prices don't have much to do with it, lest they would have released the 1GB nano over Christmas and saw an even bigger boom. And 6% down isn't exactly a "dive" for the market, it's a market correction, and it happens to a lot of stocks a lot of the time. Happens when a stock has oversold itself. - thashiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1[[If you cannot afford a REAL (60 gig video) iPod, you shouldn't get anything.]]
I apologize for not being in the upper-class. - jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Overpricing is typical Apple. Figure out a fair price, then add 50%.

I'm pretty sure they don't just pull prices out of the blue. There is probably some thought into the pricing, maybe a supply and demand curve, what they assume is equilibrium, etc. - Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"There's already a 2GB and a 4GB Nano. Why is this news?"
Because at $149 it deals the killing blow to the shuffle. - Dgen_X, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3this is nice...but I'm still going to pick up the $99 1 gig sansa
not meaning to flame...but apple needs to add a little more than different storage sizes - Phoenixfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Personally I'm not a huge fan of the Shuffle at all, but I also hope that Apple doesn't discontinue it any time soon either. I've always felt the Shuffle was perfect for the blind, or for people with severe vision problems. For some people those tiny little Nano screens would be about as "useless as Jpeg's to Hellen Keller." I think the Shuffle will still have a market, it just won't be as high profile as the Nano is now.
For those who are wondering why this is news. Anything Apple does concerning the iPod no matter how monumental or mundane creates big waves in the mp3 market. To some mp3 player makers, a $150 iPod with a screen is really bad news for them, even if their product might be regarded as being superior. - RickySan65, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Does the iPod with Video play Divx or Xvid?"
No.. h264 (mp4/mov) only, as far as I know.. - oepapel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"What's the point when for just 50 bucks more ya can get 2 gigs? STUPID! "
That's what Apple wants you to say. They have a tradition of making the best "value" the higher priced option. They still get to discontinue the shuffle (it's coming... wait for it) because the nano "replaces" it while raising the average selling price for the company. The shuffle isn't competitive anymore and by extending the nano down into the shuffle's capacity domain, they effectively get to raise their prices AND have their customers thank them for doing it! - bigredgpk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice, i now have a V day gift for my girl now!
Timmay - wormdood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would love to see an 8GB or 10GB nano.
- ra3ndy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2""Sure you can get a rio, but does it work with iTunes?"
Why be saddled with their DRM? I just want to put mp3s in my portable media player."
Hell, as long as we're makin up stuff that isn't true, does the Zen pay your taxes on time? Didn't think so.
(iTunes only uses DRM on songs from the Music Store) - ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Does the iPod with Video play Divx or Xvid?
I thought so"
Takes about 2 minutes to convert a 30 minute TV show xvid/divx to ipod video. Just an FYI. I agree it would be nice if it played them directly, but at least the formats can be converted. - stevennutz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1^^^ exactly why i love my 1GB shuffle, i can throw it in my pocket and beat the hell out of it with no worries of scratched or broken screens. i also have a 60GB video ipod that i have to be more care full with, just to reply to an earlier post i download all my favorite shows with bittorrent in Xvid and avi... takes me a minute or so to convert them to be loaded on my ipod.. so yes with the latest itunes it does support avi and Xvid... i even have my own dvds ripped and on the lil bastard. the 1GB nano will be right for some ppl, just depends.. use what fits you.
- beervolcano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I think it's funny that you guys like the Nanos, Minis, and shuffles. I don't know what I'd do without the ability to have my entire 40 gig music library (expanding now, was limited in size do to me 4g only having 40 gigs) and almost 20 gigs of tv shows and movies."
Yeah, and HOW long can you play video on that? the 5G iPod is just a stepping stone for their next device that will have better video capability and a larger screen. - Odweaver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1UPDATE: I called Apple and they said they would accept the return, i just need to print out a return slip they will email to me, and send it back when it arrives, so that made me glad, and I take back my first post.
- drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My god. They are doing the exact opposite of what they should be doing. Release a god damn 8 or 16 gig nano. Then I'll be pleased.
- nerdbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is also a price drop on the shuffle
- lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have a 5G for regular use and a Shuffle for the gym. I can't justify getting a nano since it has a tenth the capacity of the former, and isn't nearly as tough or light as the latter. If Apple phases out the Shuffle I'll end up replacing it with a Creative or iRiver solution.
- greg544, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0With the education discount the 1 GB Shuffle is $89. The 1 GB nano is $129. All of the Digg teeny boppers should be happy with this.
- RichMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0bah, I bought my 512MB iPod Shuffle a while ago for $99! Is there a way to trade my 512MB in for a 1GB (shuffle)?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0". However you also have to remember that all of the high capacity iPod's are not solid state. Working out with a hard drive based mp3 player is not practical because they have vulnerable."... in 1998. The iPod doesn't have a constantly spinning hard drive. The 60 gig has 64 megs of memory that it loads the next bunch of songs in to, and spins down the hard drive. The 30 has 32 megs. My 40 gig goes for half an hour without having to spin up.
- chongy5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is cool news for anyone wanting run iPod Linux - quite cheap, with a colour screen - although the video would be limited a lot by the small screen and the fact that 1GB isn't that much storage. Oh well.
- your_mom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0YAY!!! there finally killing the shuffle!!!
- ultimate_ed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I must confess, I have a 60GB 5G and I can't see the economics of getting any of the smaller ones, especially trying to consider getting a shuffle or 1GB nano as a workout/2nd unit. that's $100-$150 more that you could have used for a main iPOD.
I have a Marware Sportsuit Convertible case/armband and my 5G does great at the gym. This is my first iPOD and I expect it to be my only one (well, OK, my wife also has an identical one for herself) for a good while as I have room to hold all and I and some room to grow. - tylerman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.hackaday.com/entry/1234000233073484/
am I the only one I know about this? 8gb ipod nano for cheap - Complexium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wanna buy it:)
But only because its a gadget and because I have a 20GB Sony MP3-player.
digg - osxman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0iPod nano's are nat cool, that dont hold hardly anything
- abid786, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I just can't stand using iTunes though. If it weren't for that I'd probably be handing out my credit card right now. Is it possible to load your music on there through any other software?"
Realplayer?
"shuffle! shuffle! *smacks forehead* If only digg had edit."
If only people used the spell check button... - mgreenwald, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@M3ntok
"Is it possible to load your music on there through any other software?"
Yes ml_ipod @ http://www.mlipod.com/ . It is a plugin for WinAMP 5. I have used it for over a year now and I haven't had a single problem and I sure as hell like it better then iTunes. - Phoenixfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lyph3 "I think it's funny that you guys like the Nanos, Minis, and shuffles. I do understand where your coming from as I also own a 30 Gig 4G iPod photo. However you also have to remember that all of the high capacity iPod's are not solid state. Working out with a hard drive based mp3 player is not practical because they have vulnerable. However Nano's and Shuffles are perfect for working out because they are solid state. Plain and simple solid state iPods will last much longer because they do not have moving parts that can be easily damaged by rugged movement. Also for that occasional run or work out, why would you need much more than 1 gig anyway? Even 1 Gig might be considered overkill if your only going to use it for less then a couple of hours a day anyway. - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If it's replacing the iPod shuffle then I think its good.
- muikano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some digg members here may work for Apple's PR company. Don't believe single thing they say about shuffle. The shuffle is not a workable concept. Things need a screen. It just does. If only to show what the next song is.
It may be a good thing that no one reads digg comments. There's a lot of shills around articles regarding consumer electronics. Either from an opposing company or from the company itself. I've got a Sansa, I'm tellling you, the software makes listening to music a chore. Apple is still the best game in town because of Itunes, it's jus that the internal batteries they choose to use is utter villainy and extortion. - LeFrenzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sweet! perfect for mom.
- maram500, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's a great idea if you like the idea of iPod Lite, but why not just cough up an extra fify bucks and double the memory? On second thought, why doesn't Apple release a 512MB nano too? I'm not trying to make fun of it (I'm about ready to buy a nano, and 1GB is perfect for my 1.30GB iTunes library), but seriously--why'd it take so long?
- tsupersonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yawn, it's just another iPod. Oh well whatever, and if you want an 8GB nano, think about this: the 2GB iPod Nano costs $199, the 4GB iPod Nano costs $249, the 30GB iPod Video costs $299. Yeah, umm the iPod line increases by $49 or $99. So, where would they price the 8GB?
I laugh at the people who bought Nanos. A couple of my friends already broke theirs within the year. They thought it was cool, sure it's cool looking, but it's so damn small that it will break easily. IMO the best iPod deal (if you can afford it and depending on how much space you need) is the iPod Video.
All in all, another boring day as Apple releases another iPod. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Crap over 3,000 people dugg this geez and I still think it's spam for sending me to Apple's site to buy.
- srodolff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We don't need no steekin 1GB Nanos.....
60GB Ipod Video.........in my best Tim Allen impression..
whoa ho ho ho ho.......More power.... - MrAlexanderZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seems rather pointless that they are now truly trying to whipe out the old tech that they had released a few years ago... sad really, no more shuffle... collectors items!
- |ant|, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dumbest move I have ever seen...who wants one gig? you get that in an f'ing flash drive...i have a 4th gen 40 gig and its almost full....no digg
- jeromehorwitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a 60gb Ipod. I have older 10gb Mini (in 3 colors) when the 60 is too inconvieniant. But I also have a 4gb Nano, and a 2gb Nano. I'm going to buy this one because I think sometimes having the choice is good. I still am going to buy a black 60gb Ipod as well.
I already have an 1gb and 512 Ipod Shuffle, but I think the difference between the is big enough to warrant another purchase. - digitalbuzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If anyone is a student/faculty/staff of a recognized institution, you can grab the 1GB Nano for about $129. Still not bad...
- thequicksilver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some people here seem to think that 1GB is either too big or too small, and that there's no middle ground. I think there is. I own a 40GB 4th generation iPod, on which I store files, and also holds my entire music collection. I love the fact that I can carry all my music around with me, it's something that until recently you couldn't have dreamed of. And yes, I regularly make use of a huge proportion the songs on there.
But at the same time, there's occasions when I readily admit that I don't need to have all those songs with me, and it's with this that I'd considered a small flash player specifically for these occasions. Obvious occasions are on nights out when I don't want to carry my relatively bulky 40GB player, when jogging/at the gym, when wearing clothes with limited pocket space, etc etc etc. Until now, Apple haven't offered me a credible purchase for the budget I would have (£100), but now they have. (I'm not counting the shuffle, I really hate the iPod shuffle.)
Different people have different needs, and Apple are simply catering for them. Nothing more than that. I predict the 1GB nano will quickly become Apple's best selling iPod. (And that an engraved 1GB nano will be back-ordered very quickly for Valentine's Day presents…) -
