- JasonPrini, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26The Macbooks will probably have keyboards and LCD screens, have ram slot{s}, a hard drive, and rumor has it, an optical drive of some kind.
Oh, and a source has told me it will have USB ports too!
Apparently the video card will support the built in LCD perfectly!
The casing will be made of a durable material {but will scratch} in a popular colour and sport an Apple logo!
OK, I've said too much... - SparQy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I'd buy a 17" macbook -- game in XP and discover the wonders of OSX
- stokestack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This'll be great if you need to run Windows AND need a smooth surface to land an aircraft on.
- katar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I think a 17" Macbook Pro would be great. Yeah, its not the ideal travel companion, but when you are like me and go to maybe one or two conferences a year, you deal with the weight and are very happy with the big screen. Woo hoo Mac Rumors!!
- corsairstw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I expect that people who need lots of space on their screen for page layout or video editing use the 17"er, as well as maybe gamers who want portability as well. Other than that, you don't really need that big of a laptop.
It definitely is a niche product. - Tenzin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The flagship Apple notebook is expected to debut at speeds faster than the company's 2.0GHz 15-inch MacBook Pro??
- 2.16 GHz? - which they already have option for the 15" MacBook Pro - eklitzke, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12Just report as "bad link"

Apple's flagship MacBook Pro to arrive at NAB
By Kasper Jade
Published: 11:00 AM EST
Apple Computer at the National Association of Broadcasters conference next week will unveil its most poweful Intel notebook yet, a 17-inch MacBook Pro strung with a few bells and whistles, AppleInsider has learned.
The flagship Apple notebook is expected to debut at speeds faster than the company's 2.0GHz 15-inch MacBook Pro and pack additional storage capacity, well-placed sources have said.
The over-sized portable, which will be built around a stellar 17-inch TFT widescreen display and look very similar to its 15-inch counterpart, will round out Apple's professional line MacBook Pro notebooks, those sources have said.
In the past, Apple has also offered its professional customers a smaller notebook offering in the form of the 12-inch PowerBook G4. However, sources close to the company have been unable to turn up any evidence that Apple will carry the petite notebook design over to its Intel MacBook Pro product line.
Instead, the Cupertino, Calif.-based Mac maker is expected to supplement its 12-inch model with a pair of "MacBook" consumer notebooks sporting a 13-inch widescreen display and Intel Core Duo processors. Their release, however, is now rumored to have been pushed back to "next month."
Sources have said that Apple will use its extremely large presence at the NAB show to highlight the performance of its recently released Final Cut Studio 5.1 running natively on its new Intel hardware.
Still, there are rumors that the company may also make several new announcements surrounding its Pro application software packages. One such rumor suggests attendees may be privy to the first demonstrations of Final Cut Studio 6.0, which will include updates to popular Pro apps such as Final Cut Pro, Soundtrack, Motion and DVD Studio Pro.
A new version of DVD Studio Pro (5.0) is rumored to include support for burning both Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs, new High-definition DVD formats, the latter of which began making its way to market on Tuesday. Meanwhile, an update to Soundtrack Pro is expected to package support for editing additional high-end audio formats, such as 5.1 channel surround sound.
Fewer details have emerged on Apple's plans for Final Cut Pro 6.0 and Motion 3.0, however the consensus amongst industry sources is that Final Cut will expand to support several new high-definition video formats.
The National Association of Broadcasters conference is set to kick-off at the Las Vegas Convention Center on Saturday the 22nd and run through thursday the 27th. The Exhibition hall will not open until Monday the 24th. - tsunamisteve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6AppleInsider might be having issues. If you go to AppleInsider.com and click on the link for this story, that's the link it goes to. It obviously worked when I first read the story, but it does indeed seem to be down or very slow.
- speedyrev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5If I understand Digg, the stories on the front page are there because enough people dugg them. That means the majority of Digg users like the stories. I don't see that Digg is Apple biased, it just has more users who like to read about Apple.
- EmmEff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why do Apple rumour sites even bother? 99% of the time they're wrong.
- grammarpolice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The 17" powerbook is the ultimate personal computer!
I carry my 17" powerbook EVERY DAY to school and I really don't notice the so called "BURDEN" of such big computer. Yes its big but its not that big compared to the 15". As for a GAMING laptop I believe its the best you can get that doesn't compromise looks and quality. I carry a 1.33 17" with 1GB of RAM and I play games like Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, Star Wars Battlefront, and UT2004 WITHOUT lags and compromising the looks of the game. Not only does it perform great with games but the screen real estate is just excellent. I hope the new 17" MacBook Pros become even skinnier and more powerful, I cant wait for the merom 64 chip to be incorporated in them as well. ( o man )
But to all of you who think the 17" is not worthy of getting your attention well just imagine a one inch computer that has the power to run games smoothly and open up MS WORD and Firefox side by side!! haha - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you can only afford one computer, you like to "couch-" or "lounge-surf," and you don't travel too often, then a 17" portable is what you would want.
- morcheeba, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4My PB17 travels well... four trips to japan, and the only dent on it is when my roommate tossed me the Tivo remote. Sure, it's a bit big -- I had to be careful getting a case and a backpack that would fit -- but it's not too heavy, and it's very thin so it doesn't take up that much room.
My old Dell 15" Inspiron was twice as think and weighed in at over 10 lbs... I almost killed myself carrying that and a sparcbook to a client's site. - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This could represent a more powerful Consumer class notebook, Apple could simply be raising the spec's of the iBook/Macbook to a level adequate enough to compete dead on with any pro level 12" machine.
Minus the dedicated graphics of course, we all know its unlikely the Macbook will get a good graphics card. - Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5There is a filter. It is called "your brain". Apparently it is not working too well, since it lead you to this story.
- Bluezdood, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Why in the world would they release this at the NAB conference, or even the NSB? The two have nothing to do with each other at all. Most of the computers used in broadcasting (other than editing with Final Cut) are PCs. Maybe Apple is trying to get into that marketshare. If that's the case, then I guess it makes sense. Anyway, just thinking out loud.
- idean360, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It is on the appleinsider homepage. Must be having trouble.
- shadedream, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed on this one. I still prefer my 12" to any of the larger models for portability reasons. My only qualm with my current 12" is the lack of DVI (gen1) but they added that in the newer models...
Jer2eydevil88: Do keep in mind you can use that 17 Macbook pro for PC gaming in XP now ;) - nxusername, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I want my 13.3" (Mac|i)book with a 2GHz Duo.
- chad78, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6From the same morons who brought you this front-page digg story a few days ago:
http://digg.com/apple/Macbooks_coming_April_19_
Oh, wait, TODAY is the 19th! And there's no MacBooks....
Reported as LAME
just to clarify, the ARTICLE is on the same crappy rumor site - the digger is a different person. - tsunamisteve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree, but I imagine the problem is having room at the bottom of the line for an underclocked processor (because of heat) that wouldn't cannibalize MacBook (iBook) sales.
- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1proabaly 2.33GHz or whatever new chip intel has at the tme
- dandonia, on 01/02/2009, -0/+1If you look at the battery used for the 15" MBP it was a step down from the last generations 17" MBP probably so they can use a more powerful battery in the 17" in order to keep them both on par with each other for battery life.
As for other spec upgrades, I think the top end 17" MBP will have a faster processor than the 2.8 offered in the 15" and hopefully (though not likely) the SSD option will be bigger or standard with an option for bigger. I have been waiting for a 17" refresh for over a month now because I figured apple would have sorted it by MacWorld. Guess I will have to wait another month now.
I would get the 15" but losing so much screen resolution from my current 1920x1200 would suck - thats a big chunk of value for me. - frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It would be nice to see apple produce a really thin and light notebook, it might be more relevant now since business users can install windows and run all their business apps
- test5477, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I want the 12", its the perfect size for my use.
my current 12" pb will need to be replaced and i'm waiting to see what the reg. macbook will look like... - geekologist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Hopefully, if they do release a 17" MacBook Pro it will bring the prices down on the 15" MacBook Pros.
- nomore, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I've been waiting for this since WWDC last year.
I had aspirations of ordering one as soon as they are announced, but with the stories of 15" MBP problems I'll probably wait a while. It's amazing that laptop computers are available with screen resolutions the same as Apple 20" Cinema displays.
IMO, the 17" MBP is the ultimate personal computer. OS X and Windows Vista should both scream on it. I hope they offer larger HDD than 120GB. - tobsterius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wouldn't take this as an indication that the 12" powerbook is dead. This is a pro event, i doubt many pro's want to fiddle around with an editing application on a 12" screen.
I suspect that it will be released along with the macbooks(iBook replacement) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, I'll concede you could plop down $1700 on an iMac, then drop $1200.00 on an iBook for about the same money, but you can get perfectly good refurbs, lowering the cost of both options by as much as $500.00.
- Nanx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Since they're considering colors, I'm assumign that they'll release a silver MB to go along with the classic white to make up for the elimination of the 12 PB, but I totally want a MB that has a carbon fiber enclosure--that would kick ass..
- dandonia, on 01/02/2009, -0/+1But then you would find yourself working on a low end machine more often than not, especially if you arn't the type to be sat a desk when relaxing. Give me a 17" beasty laptop over any mixture of desktop/netbook
- 1911wolf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Appleinsider?
Yeah, these are the same guys that predicted a new iBook (MacBook) would be revealed on April 19th. Maybe they were talking about the same iBook that was revealed in Jan., Feb., and Mar. You know... the invisible one. - iamgnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why do people always say this? Apple never changes the price of their systems. When new hardware becomes available (say faster processors), they bump up to it but do not change the price. The only time prices change is when they are about to replace a product (so a price drop is a good indication that something new is coming in a few days/weeks).
The same will be true here. They will introduce the MBP 17" for a higher price than the 15" (look to the cost of PB line prior to the release of the MBP) and the 15"'s price will remain the same.
Some may not like it, but that is how they do business. - stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"is the gap between 2.0 Ghz and 2.16 Ghz really noticeable to the user?"
Only to your wallet. :) - hwh43, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1is the gap between 2.0 Ghz and 2.16 Ghz really noticeable to the user?
- snowbooch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ad revenue maybe?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@oneshare:
Retard? I'm talking about a REAL DESKTOP, not some mickey-mouse repackaged laptops and a desk brick. You know, the kind designers use? The kind that have upgradeable insides for, I dunno, video production, design work, gaming, etc?
I guess all the people using the gigantic Dual G5's in the aluminum cases were retards also by your standards. Dumbass. - crackhead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I will never buy a 15" or 17" Macbook, it's just not portable imo. But I'd be perfectly happy to move to a 12" core duo macbook...especially if it's not made of metal. My aluminum 12" Powerbook (1ghz G4) has the WORST wifi reception imaginable. My mac mini just a few feet away sees almost a dozen wifi networks. The Powerbook sees maybe two. It sometimes doesn't get a full signal just a few feet away from the access point. Whoever decided to encase the antenna in metal should be shot.
- Nanx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If customised, the 15 MBP will probably match the 17 MBP. Unless the 17MBP comes with a kick-ass video card, the 15 MBP would be a better value--same specs, longer battery, much more portable, and cost less even after being customized.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Enough with the laptops, when are the Intel-based desktops coming?
- oneshare325, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1haha
- idean360, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3the Macbooks (new iBooks) will probably have a high end [core solo] to keep the gap between MBP and MB relevant...
- T0FU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0judging by the pricing for the 15" macbook pro, i'm gonna have to sell my kidney to afford the 17"
- Nanx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wait, wait Happy Phantom--17 MBP users will only be able to afford one computer but can spend over $3000 on a laptop?
- idean360, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2They must not be selling that many 12" PBs I guess.
- oneshare325, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3retard
- chad78, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3iMac? Mac Mini?..... Like months ago...
http://store.apple.com/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+7I don't see much of a market for the 17 inch powermac or macbook pro either.. I often see the 12inch and 15inch powerbooks, but I rarely see the 17-inch ones anymore... It's too big to be used anywhere but at the home or office, in which case you could easily buy a 17inch imac which will give you a faster HD at the same time. I can understand how someone would want a large 17 inch PC laptop as a gaming system for LAN parties and what not, but nobody buys an apple to play games.
- SP33DFR34K, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Your are misleaded. The article said that it *COULD* come as early as April 19th. It did not say anywhere that it will be released that day. It was just speculated that it could come out that day.
- affanjam, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5umm.. i dont know what ur smokin but that link works
