- coldfusion1970, on 06/09/2009, -11/+89Most of those apps are only for jailbroken iPhones, so they dont really matter as the majority of people (including myself) cant use them.
- rnawky, on 06/10/2009, -6/+74So no more applications that provide iPhones with basic Smart Phone functions.
- nochilinopity, on 06/10/2009, -4/+56A lot of this comes with the new OS, not just the new phone. Buried as inaccurate.
- inactive, on 06/10/2009, -8/+34So?
- wastern, on 06/10/2009, -6/+29the 3GS camera zooms? Not that I saw
I would add 1password to the list since Safari is getting auto-fill - Anand999, on 06/10/2009, -1/+22I can't imagine that tethering app going away. If there's any way for ATT to do it, they're not going to let you use the official tethering application unless you've coughed up the extra $$$ for a tethering plan.
On a side note, I can't believe the iPhone didn't have native voice dialling or a sound recorder until now. My 6 year old Nokia 6600 does both of those natively and I'm pretty sure those were old hat even when that phone came out. - bibbles, on 06/10/2009, -3/+20Oh yes, because digital zooming is oh so amazing... oh, wait, taking a full quality picture and then messing with it in Photoshop later all always render better results... and it's hard enough to keep an iPhone still, zooming is only going to give you a less clear picture anyway.
- pyrates, on 06/10/2009, -0/+14The tethering app isn't obsolete. You can bet at&t will charge extra for tethering, and for those who think it's unfair to pay twice, will jailbreak and use the tethering app instead. It won't go unused.
- tenmilesky, on 06/10/2009, -3/+16I'm sorry, but this guy's^ comments are ***** hilarious.
- warragul, on 06/10/2009, -0/+11The OP has obviously missed the fact that there are several million 3G iPhones for every 3GS iPhone in existence. And will be so for some time. Those 3G iPhones won't go away in a hurry.
But we won't let facts spoil an Apple-knocking story. - majortom1981, on 06/10/2009, -1/+12You can go to the apple store and get the 3gs for free if you brought it after may 9th
- Lionhart, on 06/10/2009, -1/+11If every software maker complained when their software went obsolete...
- inactive, on 06/10/2009, -1/+11Tethering wont be free.
- inkswamp, on 06/10/2009, -1/+11> some of it's cool new features [...] and it's cool new features
> [...] once AT&T gets their act together [...] allow you to vocally control
> [...] due it's immense success
If you're going to run a site that posts articles intended to attract attention and inform readers, it might not be a bad idea to get that whole basic grammar thing down first. - beirne, on 06/10/2009, -0/+9The article included Motion-X GPS, a program that tracks where you have been, a feature that isn't rendered obsolete by turn-by-turn directions.
- ElAmo, on 06/10/2009, -4/+13Can't? Please. You choose not to.
- AmyVernon, on 06/09/2009, -6/+15Oops.
- kreatre2007, on 06/10/2009, -0/+8This article makes it seem as if Apple had some malicious intent by adding functionality to the iPhone. So, Apple is supposed to stagnate their development process because some iPhone developers had already produced certain functionality? What if those developers stop making updates? What if those developers decide to pull their content from the App Store? iPhone 3.0 presents new OPPORTUNITIES for developers. Sure, it actually made obsolete two applications that I helped develop, but I don't see it that way. I see this as a new opportunity. We made money off our apps, so I have no problem with it.
- LittleDas, on 06/10/2009, -0/+8Buried as inaccurate, and just generally stupid since quite a few of those applications are still superior or at least different compared to Apple's offering. The tethering one is the most obvious example since tethering contracts are a bitch and they can kiss my ass if they think I'm paying for "unlimited data" and then not get to use it how I want to.
- mrBitch, on 06/10/2009, -0/+6There's an app for that!
- Sunscreen, on 06/10/2009, -0/+6lolwut
- TobyDumb, on 06/10/2009, -0/+6What the developers don't see is Apple can take any app design and make it their own, either implementing it in updates or new models like the 3GS.
Just like Blizzard uses U.I. Mods as templates for updates and expansions.
Doh! - andrewcool, on 06/10/2009, -0/+6Some of these features, don't apply to all iphones..like the 1st gen! :'(
- Vulphaestion, on 06/10/2009, -0/+5A much faster processor, faster 3G chip, and magnetometer are not features? IMO the jump from 3G to 3G S is a much bigger one than the original one to 3G. Think about it, the main differences were 3G and a new back.
- drewX2, on 06/10/2009, -0/+5Who cares. Let's stop innovating, that way we can continue to keep the same crap around forever.
- leif77, on 06/10/2009, -0/+5I think apple took advantage of the App Store by tracking it to see what people wanted most in their phones that wasn't already there. Never realized how well the store works as a R&D tool.
- Tenoq, on 06/10/2009, -0/+51password still is a secure password and login store... it's sole purpose wasn't just enabling auto-logins to websites. In fact I've never used it for that. :p
- chikuten, on 06/10/2009, -4/+9I won't give a damn about the iPhone and its apps until it's provided by another carrier. AT&T blows.
- Wandel, on 06/10/2009, -0/+415 apps that proves you don't need new hardware, and that many of the functions could've just as well been implemented in the OS upgrade.
- itsbob, on 06/10/2009, -1/+5#16 Jailbreak (Unless AT&T rapes us on the tethering)
- mrBitch, on 06/10/2009, -0/+4RE: " Konfabulator getting overtaken and killed by Apple's Dashboard Widgets... "
Which came first? Who copied who?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dashboard_(software)
" ... One school of thought came to the conclusion that Dashboard was a "rip-off" of Konfabulator.
... Konfabulator may in turn have been based on Apple’s Desk Accessories, first released in 1984 with the original Macintosh.. " - shockme17, on 06/10/2009, -0/+4Shouldn't this be titled 150+ apps? For every app that comes out, at least 10 come out that copy it for better or for worse
- samgab, on 06/10/2009, -0/+4What Coldfusion said is perfectly correct English. Maybe some, myself included, ought to have paid more attention at school?
- blackinthmiddle, on 06/10/2009, -0/+3Also don't forget the increased hard drive and all of the voice options. To me, the compass alone is a huge increase, as it allows turn by turn GPS apps to function properly.
edru, you say the iPhone 3GS is unfinished. What, in your mind, does Apple still need to do? Granted, I wanted to be wowed with this latest iPhone. But what exactly do you want. From a hardware standpoint, Apple is king. No one has a screen better than the iPhone and the capacitive touch is second to none. We've already heard people complaining about distortion on the Palm Pre screen.
A front facing camera? Look, I've used the camera on my MacBook maybe once. You'd think with my skype account, I'd use it more, but I don't. I see a front facing camera as nothing more than a battery drain.
Background processes? Let's see how the Pre's background processes work on the battery. My guess is that within six months of owning one, you'll be lucky to get through half a day with it. Having multiple apps open at the same time would be cool. Again, let's see how this affects the battery life. - DrunkenSavior, on 06/10/2009, -0/+3It's still the best utility to turn your iPhone into a very capable GPS unit (for both urban and rural travel). Adding a compass to the iPhone doesn't negate the usefulness of the software.
- emt1451, on 06/10/2009, -3/+6June 17th. Go die now.
- burton3660, on 06/10/2009, -0/+3Are you kidding me? There's hardly a difference. It's been a year since the 3G came out at least wait for the 4G
- samgab, on 06/10/2009, -0/+3maps are all part of the tomtom app. You don't need to be connected to the internet, it will work just like a standard satnav device.
And yes, if you watch the presentation, it's clear that it will work with the iPhone 3G.
http://iphone.tomtom.com - youareretarded, on 06/10/2009, -2/+5But won't the new software update bring those phones (iphone 3g) up to date? And considering that the update is free and due out in a couple of weeks, I see no real reason why anyone wouldn't want to upgrade.
- joshmoney, on 06/10/2009, -0/+3You just accidentally your accidently.
/Head Asplodes! - DDme, on 06/10/2009, -0/+3lol $80 a month? you're joking
- etaubeneck, on 06/10/2009, -0/+3http://lmgtfy.com/?q=iphone+3.0+release
- algaeturd, on 06/10/2009, -5/+8Would iPhone users like a little cheese with their whine this week?
Seriously. Is there an app for wiping away your iTears? - Resistoon, on 06/10/2009, -0/+3I agree about MotionX GPS not being rendered obsolete. Obviously they don't know anything about the MotionX GPS App. This is a great app for bicycles.
- mrBitch, on 06/10/2009, -2/+5Number of apps rendered obsolete by OS 3.0 = 15
Number of apps in the app store = 51,493
Hmmm, looks like your theory is toast.

Cycorder is one of the main reasons that I don't feel the need to upgrade from my 3G to the 3GS. Why should I? I just hope the 3.0 final release will be jailbroken by the 17th. *crosses fingers*
- arbulus, on 06/10/2009, -0/+2Basically, this article is saying that the iPhone 3G S makes it so you don't have to jailbreak your phone to get great functionality.
- Acetate, on 06/10/2009, -0/+2iSuckers
Wait till they bring out the next model in 2010, then you'll have even more obsolete programs. - cuervoman914, on 06/11/2009, -0/+2me not believe it!
