It.... Macbook Pros?
I kid, I kid. - thekak, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22If this is true and it doesn't come with a backlit keyboard, apple is fired.
That's the one huge flaw of the 12" Powerbook. - ucbrave92, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17you obviously don't follow apple news closely, but macrumors isn't just any run of the mill rumor site. they tend to be as accurate as any of the other top sites of its kind.
- mistergosh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13There has to be a 12'' Macbook Pro in the future, as Apple doesn't have any ultra portable laptops at the moment.
And if it comes with a video card that is not integrated, I'm sold. - Korvaras, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I picked up one of the 12" powerbooks. Love the little guy. It would be nice if it had the backlit, but it's not a huge deal. If the new one has the feature, all the power to it though.
- rcran, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I am really looking forward to being let down by this.
- mfratt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12the words "true" and "rumor" are usually mutually exclusive.
I take anything and everything from macrumors.com for a grain of salt. - mythicflux, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11"you obviously don't follow apple news closely, but macrumors isn't just any run of the mill rumor site. they tend to be as accurate as any of the other top sites of its kind."
Except that MacRumors is reporting on an article on MacScoop, which may not have as strong a track record.
http://www.macscoop.com/articles/2006/11/17/sources-confirm-plans-for-a-smaller-ultra-thin-form-factored-macbook-pro - mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Totally illiterate description. Sad.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"If this is true and it doesn't come with a backlit keyboard, apple is fired."
Umm the backlit keyboard is cool and all but if that is what you are worrying most about then Im sorry but thats just plain nuts. - deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The last Powerbook, the 2005 12" PBG4, was my all time favorite Apple laptop, and I've owned half a dozen. The form factor was 'just right', but it did run a bit hot. It was also the smallest Powerbook ever produced... it was even smaller than the PB Duo from the 90's.
Dugg just because Apple needs to make the damned form-factor again.
Are you listening Steve?
Even if it's a Core 2 solo, I'd still take it over a thin and light 15" Macbook Pro with all the bells and whistles.
Who cares if the keyboard is backlit... I touch type. :D - bdub92, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11As a matter of fact i have followed apple news closely, and macrumors.com always seems to be the first to take a small patent, or minor bit of information and blow it up into some piece of information they state as fact.
- Photoblog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7would be great to see a macbook pro 13" with 128v ram
backlit keyboard. - zerock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+612" + SuperDrive + Core Duo 2 = really cool thing
- knowall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"macrumors.com always seems to be the first to take a small patent, or minor bit of information and blow it up into some piece of information they state as fact"
This is untrue. MacRumors generally qualifies all rumors in context as is the purpose of the site. They are far less sensationalistic than engadget, tuaw and the many blogs that submit to digg.... - DuxDucis, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Do your research before saying something stupid - the core 2 duos are not that hot
Or at least not as hot as the Pentium M - freonchill, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6as long as it doesnt have a POS video card (e.g. intel 950 / gma series)
- jabbar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7how often do you find yourself in that much darkness where you need it? i havent used it on my 15" powerbook except to use that stupid itunes visualization. its cool to look at once and then its an expensive afterthought.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6MacRumors pwns ThinkSecret
- JoeyDeacon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I love my PB12". The form factor is perfect for a laptop in my opinion. I doubt I'll be upgrading to a Mac Book Prooo version though because at 12" you really don't need that much power and my G4 will be abel to keep up for quite some time.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3the only reason I haven't bought another mac is because theres no 12 inch models and te 13 inch Macbook isn't enough oomph for me.
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The point of a thin 12 inch Macbook WON'T be gaming (the screen's only 12 inches diagonal!!), but more along the lines of ultra compact/portable computing... in other words, expect something like the intel 950 series for graphics
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Sounds like someone does a lot of 'Private Browsing'
- RedClaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4For those of us with limited mobility and physical disabilities, this is exactly the type of Mac that is needed. I own a Toshiba Portege R200, as weight is a bigger issue for me then processing power or various toys. But with a Windows machine comes Windows issues and instabilities. It is about time that an ultra-portable Mac came into the market to level the playing field for people who desperately need ultra-light ultra-portables.
Should this rumor prove to be true, I'll be first in line to get rid of my Windows notebook and get this 12" MacBook pro. - Nysul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3make it a tablet mac with an ati1600 or better and I'll dump my fujitsu and not look back. The one thing about apple is I wish they had more options. They would probably double their marketshare with a 12" macbook pro, tablet option, and an apple inbetween an imac and mac mini (I essentially want an imac that isn't integrated into the monitor, ie, a PC. Yes, I know about the macmini and macpro, but something in between gimped and $2500 would be nice).
One reason I believe this could double their marketshare is because I believe alot of windows powerusers would be more inclined to recommend mac minis to their parents and grandparents if they know more about OSX, and are just waiting for a mac they could stick a good graphics card into (as you can always bootcamp) without spending 3k. - acearchie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well surely the hint that it might cost $1700-$1800 shows the fact that it probably has a lot more different to the macbook!
- NAPO, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2apple needs this. i neeeeed this. powers that be make it happen.
- Bootes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not their source. They're quoting another site.
- acearchie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How did you guess I was 8?
- jaydj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I am not saying that this rumor is untrue, but there is some support for bdub92
One instance....
http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2003/11/20031107030842.shtml
It turned out to be just a rumor despite the "macrumors confirmation" - ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Man I had a 12.1 Uniwill Centrino.. mmmm I do miss it.
This 13 macbook is nice, but almost to large for me.
I Just hope there is a "non pro" version .. - phill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I also vote for a Mac Tablet. I really, really, really, really want one. A tablet with a dock so I can use my full size keyboard, mouse, and monitor, but have the ability to take it with me when I leave my cave. I hate laptops. You have to open them up, they are hard to use on the run. You have to set them on something to work with them. A tablet is a lot easier. I could have a car mount for using it on the road, or when I'm setting in my soft chair I can kick back and still have the ability to use it. So I'm holding out for the Tablet.
- captainsniz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can you boy's say Apple TABLET PC. The 12" form factor Macbook would be the best way to test the waters on a tablet for students and healthcare workers. A close relative is a VERY successful Apple developer and claims there are hints of this type of input option in some of the new code. We were talking about this a few weeks ago, so the new rumor on the web is 100% believable to me.
- jonsedar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2maybe a cooler-running flash RAM Hard Drive? http://tomshardware.co.uk/2006/09/20/conventional_hard_drive_obsoletism_uk/
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That was before integrated graphics could do ANYTHING of use... the Intel 950 series isn't so bad. Great for anything short of intense gaming. My Mac Mini handles WoW just fine for me. That's all we really want a graphics chip for anyhow right?
- thomasjordan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They stuffed a 64mb Nvidia card into the 12" Powerbook, so I am optimistic that a ultra-portable MBP would have something better than Intel graphics.
- thomasjordan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I beg to differ. The MacBook is missing the enhanced graphics card that was present in the 12" Powerbooks.
So a 12" MacBook Pro with a graphics card better than the integrated Intel chip they have in the standard MacBook would be a welcome addition.
I wonder what sort of resolution a 12" MacBook Pro would carry. If I had one gripe about my 12" Powerbook, it would be the 1024x768 resolution. - TheSolomon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have one of the original 17" PowerBooks, so I'm not sure if they've changed it, but I know with mine I'm almost never working in a setting that's dark enough for the ambient light sensor to even *allow* the keyboard backlight to turn on. Plus, if the room *is* dark enough, I'd have to turn the screen down to almost its lowest setting before the backlight is really noticeable. (Granted, the backlight's brightness been increased in the newer revisions.)
- AloofDufus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My 4 1/2-year-old 867mhz 12" PowerBook is still going strong, but a 12" MacBook Pro would pry it out of my hands, especially with reasonable video card, memory, and HD speed options. Where do I sign?
- ZerosElipticus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The above comment is incorrect. The 12" Powerbook had a Nvidia Geforce FX5200-GO with 64MB dedicated video memory and it *did* support Quartz Extreme and Core Image.
- deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The iBook didn't have video mirroring, didn't have a DVD writer.
No, the 950 isn't a good graphics chip. The one in the 12" PB G4 wasn't either. It didn't even support Quartz Extreme, the Macbook does."
Don't make up facts to win debates. It makes you look... desperate.
I owned a late model 12" iBook G4 (1 Ghz) for a year before the PBG4 12", and it supported mirroring, spanning display -and- QE/CI. - davidsun007, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0My first Macbook 12" notebook damaged, now I wants to buy newly, but the friends persuade me hold on, did not know when 12 "can go on the market?
- ThankTheCheese, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1how in the world could it get any thinner without removing the hard disk and optical drive?
- TASDEVL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Apple needs to take note out of Lenovo's book and make an equivalent machine to the thinkpad X60s but give it some decent graphics, having 8 hours of battery life on an Apple laptop would be sweet. Guarantee the battery life is no better than 4 hrs though because it'll need all its power to cool the damn thing.
@ DuxDucis - the Core 2 Duo in the MBP is only slightly cooler because Apple turned the default fan speed up from 1000rpm to 2000rpm. The machine gets just as frickin hot at 1000rpm fan speed as the previous MBP. - deepsub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"The 13" MacBook is the replacement for the 12" PB G4.
It has all the same stuff and lacks all the same stuff."
MacBooks aren't 'pro' machines. The 12" PBG4 was.
It would be more accurate to say that the 13" Macbook replaces the 12" iBook G4.
I -hate- the Macbooks... the chiclet keyboard... the easy to scratch case... the screen glare... and the form factor is awkward (for me).
Have you seen the things in stores? They looks like crap from just sitting in the store. - cbgaloot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where does the line form?
http://www.givemetheinfo.com/Christmas-prank-gifts/ - Warblade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"MacScoop/MacOSXRumors cites "reliable" sources for this report and has had a recent history of some accurate reports with predictions of 23" (24") iMacs as well as Leopard info pre-WWDC."
I like how Mac rumors puts quotes around reliable. Does that mean their sources aren't reliable? - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No, it would not be more accurate to say it replaces the 12" iBook G4.
The iBook didn't have video mirroring, didn't have a DVD writer.
No, the 950 isn't a good graphics chip. The one in the 12" PB G4 wasn't either. It didn't even support Quartz Extreme, the Macbook does.
I just replaced my 12" PB G4 with a (Core2Duo) Black Macbook. If you had, you wouldn't be niggling about stuff either. The Macbook is so much faster in every way. - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2The 13" MacBook is the replacement for the 12" PB G4.
It has all the same stuff and lacks all the same stuff.
Has mirroring, DVD writer.
Doesn't have USB ports on the right side or PCMCIA slot.
It is highly unlikely Apple will make a 12" MacBook Pro when the 13" MacBook is the same thing as far as specs, only a hair over an inch wider. - dbavaria, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Whats the point if they don't even make a dock?
