- Frogking, on 11/07/2008, -0/+8This is a good list, but I'm still waiting for a true SIP-compatible application that doesn't require that the PBX be accessed from the outside world. I have an Asterisk server running in my home, behind a firewall. All of the iPhone SIP clients I've seen so far require that I open ports on my firewall instead of just accessing the server directly by internal IP address. I don't wish to subject my VoIP server to security risks. If I *really* need to use my Asterisk server when I'm not connected to my home network, I could just use VPN.
Come on, iPhone VoIP developers! Let me log into my SIP server DIRECTLY! - liquisoft, on 11/07/2008, -1/+6Fring is a piece of crap. I'll get dugg down for being negative, but it's true.
It hardly works when dialing, for one, and its UI is an embarrassment. Most people really download it so they can use Skype on their iPhones. Too bad it doesn't support skype chat rooms, meaning every message sent inside a chat room is delivered to you individually. In other words, if my friend Bob is in a chat room and sends a message to the whole room, Fring acts as though Bob is sending the message directly to me. I never know wtf is going on.
Count me out of using the iPhone for Skype-related activities until Skype releases an actual iPhone app (which they say they're working on). - inactive, on 11/07/2008, -0/+5Is there any way to receive calls on VoIP? Do I just have to have the app open before I can get the call? I only ask this because I have zero bars at my house(!)
- mesarah, on 11/07/2008, -0/+4Great collection of tools for making VoIP calls. I only knew around 3 of them, rest of them are new for me. I am start finding details for them
- paradigmxx, on 11/07/2008, -0/+2Any versions with 3G-voip capability for jailbroke iphones?
- cddict1, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1very trues, great list. Hey thanks mate for sharing.
- podux, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1I find it ironic that their Truphone screenshot shows the ability to answer a call.. that's a capability that their iPhone client does not have.
The Truphone client so far has been the easiest for me to use, but their pricing isn't great (I think it's about 6.5 cents/min for US domestic calls). Lately I've been playing with Fring and connecting it to my Voxalot account via SIP. This is nice because then I can set up a multitude of outgoing SIP services on voxalot in order to pick the best/cheapest SIP provider depending on the number dialed. This is something that isn't directly available in Fring since the Fring app only allows one SIP account. - justin99, on 11/07/2008, -1/+2Great list. It's not always easy to find all these apps, since there isn't really a 'voip' category on the app store.
I'm the publisher of WalkieTalkie, so I'm thrilled to see it on the list.
Just to throw up some answers to common questions about VOIP on the iPhone/iPod..
1. Apple won't allow VOIP apps in the app store unless they are crippled unless on WIFI. This is unlikely to change any time soon.
2. The 2g Ipod touch can work with the iPhone style (or 3rd party) headphones with a built-in mic and can do VOIP.
3. No apps can run in the background yet, so when the app quits, no incoming calls. Turning the screen off is okay, though.
Apple still hasn't released the SDK portion to allow some background notification to apps.
4. So far it seems like it takes about a week for apple to approve my new releases.
It sucks to make an app release (with limited testing, since apple won't really let you beta the app pre-release) and then get negative reviews. I scrambled to fix the problems, and submit updates, but it still takes awhile for the new release to get allowed out. And even if you fix the problems, people seldom update their reviews, so you're kinda stuck with them forever. And people who use the app successfully don't post a good review usually.
So if you have some apps that you use regularly and you think they're worth a damn, please go give them an honest review. - Frogking, on 11/08/2008, -0/+1Yes, Fring won't connect directly to my SIP server on my local network. I'd have to open ports on my firewall. As I stated above, I don't want my PBX visible to the outside world. Also, I'm not too keen on passing my SIP username and password through a third-party.
- logic6, on 11/07/2008, -1/+2Truphone is GREAT, (if you are not using an iPhone). I have been using Truphone for 2 years on a Nokia E61, inbound & outbound quality and consistency is fantastic. But, their iPhone app will not permit inbound calls, nor can you use your existing truphone number.
Fring is a good idea with a terrible interface and it's full of bugs.
In my informed opinion, there are no serious solutions to full VoIP for the iPhone yet (and I'm watching).
That said, if you have a phone truphone supports (besides the iPhone), get it, you'll love it. - persecuted, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1nope, you need to jailbreak and add a mic via the dock connector. 2g touch works with Fring but not much else.
- persecuted, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1Fring is still young. Your dialing problem can be solved by leaving the app open for about 5 minutes before making calls, annoying but necessary.
- greenvortex, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1Will any of these work on a 1st Gen iPod Touch?
- aenone, on 01/14/2009, -0/+0check out the voip hardware at http://www.voiptoshop.com :)
- SandorAtTheZoo, on 11/07/2008, -0/+0So, where the heck is Skype?
I realize that I wouldn't be able to receive calls when the app isn't running, etc. but for making overseas calls, I'd love to be able to use my iPhone! - javierjrdg, on 11/16/2008, -0/+0I've tried the jajah service and it doesn't even recognize my phone number. frustrating!
- bbendele, on 11/07/2008, -1/+1Will any of these work on 1st gen iPod?
- davidlow, on 11/07/2008, -1/+1Did you try Fring and had the same problem?
- inactive, on 11/07/2008, -4/+1Hey China - It's me - Sorry to bug you BUT I'M CALLING FROM MY IPHONE - just thought I'd let you know how cool I am. Later
