- Kink, on 10/12/2007, -3/+57Another list...yay...
- jamesong, on 10/12/2007, -1/+41Exactly. I'm a mac guy, and I'm tired of seeing all the same apps on all thses lists. C'mon, switch it around a little.
- TomP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Nothing new though :(
- phlyersphan, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14Lists may be old hat to you old hat Mac people, but I just converted from Windows to Mac a couple months ago and appreciate anything I can find that will make my new Mac life easier!
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Enough with the bitching about Apple stories in the Apple section. Block the section if you don't want the stories. Otherwise, please ***** off!
- willgonz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I like Windows. It's fun to update patches every Tuesday. It's like Christmas all the time.
- supz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Everyone always recommends Acquisition when it comes to mac p2p software. I don't know why someone would pay money for software that is used for p2p.
Poisoned (http://gottsilla.net/poisoned.php) is pretty straight forward, works well, and is free. - JuyLe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The most complete list I ever seen, amazing wow, really worth the digg ... No really stop digging those lists please...
- hotani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Smultron ( http://smultron.sourceforge.net/ ) > Taco.
- Naga10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why pay for it, when you can download it with another free P2P app?
- mikev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The list sucks, it's nothing new. I'm more interested in the ads (http://img79.imageshack.us/img79/6536/picture1ih1.png) over that list.
- Elektriq, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7No, it ***** doesn't.
- igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3that DiskInventory is a really sweet program...
just saved me 12 gigs of space :D - bytebreeder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Let the lists be. If everyone said "Oh, application X should be on this list" then the lists would be useless.
- haylcron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I with you cyberduck. At first I thought it was a great replacement for transmit, but I was so very wrong. It's unreliable, slow, and just a hassle to use.
On to the larger picture... I own 3 macs and several iPod models. However, I am absolutely sick of these lists. There is never anything new, there is no valued content on the pages, and when you post these, you give mac users around the world a bad name.
/rant off - cypherz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Errrm, Adium is great and all, but does it do Video Chat? Thats about all I use iChat for - the video conferencing. Works pretty well for that, but then I haven't found anything to compare to as yet.
- kday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Don't we choose an OS for the apps available? OS X has a better selection of Apps (In quality, not quantity). This is a major selling point, and a great reason to use OS X.
In fact, I thought the only real purpose of an operating system is to run apps. - Sidnak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Im a newbie. Didnt know about taco. Thanks
- cubs2234, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2where have i seen these apps before?
- djjuice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2the built in ftp for OS X can be quick and useful at times. and I say "at times" with high discretion... transmit is my choice
- macsroxr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No idea if its any good but fixing the above URL http://gottsilla.net/poisoned.php
- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What?
- djjuice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i wouldn't recommend acquisition to anyone (paying for a an app you plan to use for well good and/or bad is a joke), and cyberduck while its free, is crap its not that great..
A real good app is pith helmet, its close to adblock for safari, but does a good job. - nayr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I love taco. Nice and easy to use, previews, lightweight, free, AWESOME. I never switched back to subetha edit; just me, emacs, and taco.
- randomgeek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I thought the disk space utility was kinda nice. At least I know I'm not the only one that goes, "wtf? I can't have used this much space.."
But yeah, the rest I've seen before. They are all good apps, but I already know them. I'd like to see a list that actually delves into the Mac shareware scene (which is pretty healthy) and find some hidden gems. - stukdog, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@phlyersphan:
Head on over to FreeMacWare and go crazy. All the free apps you'd want.
http://www.freemacware.com - cypherz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maybe you need to quit reading everything with Apple in the title. This is user rated news. Get it? People wanted to see it. Get over the fact that people like to read anything with Apple in the title! We like it!
- rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Wow, what an exhaustive list.
Slow day @ digg, I suppose... - cypherz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6The list was pretty good, found an app there I hadn't seen (Taco HTML Edit). Here's a sort of ultimate os x list: http://osx.iusethis.com/
- joel8x, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I gave it the ole digg because of that Taco program. I never saw it before and its very cool for quick html edits.
- drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lists that promote complete commercialware on digg get dugg. Sorry but I don't see why commercial applications need digg to do their advertising for them.
- redrighthand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I already had 7 of these. Great apps but where is the "Xtorrent"?
- kday, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3***** iChat. It's a piece of ***** compared to Adium X (free).
Adium has a huge selection of plugins (called Xtras) that do anything you want. Oh, and the interface is much more intuitive than iChat. Adium is the Firefox of chat clients. It's iChat on steroids.
Get Adium X here: http://www.adiumx.com/
Check out the Xtras: http://www.adiumxtras.com/
Supports AIM, Jabber, MSN, Yahoo!, .Mac, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, Google Talk, ICQ, Lotus Sametime, Novell Groupwise, Yahoo! Japan, and Zephyr
Best chat client EVER. - macsroxr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://img79.imageshack.us/img79/6536/picture1ih1.png Looks like Digg needs to ignore ) when making URLs
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use RBrowser for FTP and SFTP, and Fugu for SSH. RBrowser is free for plain FTP, and does a great job, with a clean interface. I think they make you pay if you want to use SFTP, but I never use that. For SSH, it doesn't get any better than Fugu, which is free as well.
- trebe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know if I would call those utilities...
- willgonz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anyone know of a list of Mac related video casts? You know like commandn, Hak.5, systm, etc. I am not interested in audio casts. Divx format would be ideal.
- MiloMindrbindr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1acqlite is exactly acquisition, just a freeware version. I prefer it over poisoned.
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12747 - conekt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have no problem hearing about apple topics.
I would like to just gently say that, that while the first few were probably of value to people new to the mac, these articles have, in my opinion, become deeply stale, redundant, and uninformative.
I really would like to articles held to a higher standard here and I sincerely hope that the digg team's work to improved the math behind the system will put these kind of posts in the light, I believe they deserve, because I strongly suspect they do not make it to the homepage based on the merit of their content.
If you want to promote your site through digg then please demonstrate the value and strength of it by publishing interesting, original content. - macsroxr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Digg this http://digg.com/apple/Ultimate_Most_Extreme_Mac_List_Ever maybe it'll end this once and for all.
- cypherz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Why digg down my comment, the guy said he appreciated anything for the Mac that made his life easier. I gave him a link to a site that has been useful to me and relates to the topic. Not spam! Not anymore than the people who posted links to "Freemacware.com" etc. osx.iusethis.com is a great little site (that I have no connection with). I've found out about sidenote, writeroom, little snitch and many other great applications by browsing the site. Why digg this down?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1SAN FRANCISCO (Billboard) - On Monday (November 6), Cingular Wireless will become the first U.S. operator to provide mobile access to online digital music services such as Napster, eMusic and Yahoo Music. Win win for MSFT !
- 343GuiltySpark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Transmit is a great FTP app, I meant to buy it but never got around to it. Instead, I've been using gFTP compiled thought darwinports. Free and does what I need, perhaps not as elegantly. I thought I might give CyberDuck a try, but after reading here maybe I shouldn't waste my time.
- deedas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dugg because there was actually two things I didn't know about.
- blackfeathers, on 03/05/2008, -0/+0those are great programs. i use them too. but, i don't know...
personally, i think (in no particular order) these are top 10 (0 to 10) material for os x utilities:
0. terminal 1. finder 2. spotlight 3. safari 4. (quickview in leopard)(preview in tiger) 5. firewall 6. grep 7. netstat 8. sudo 9. tcpdump and last but not least 10. man. cron and automator are for close consideration.
top three options/switches in no specific context and in no specific order:
0. -v 1. -vv 2. -an 3. -al - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3This is 58th "Top 10 Apple Apps" articles I've seen on Digg. You all need to stop digging everything you see with an Apple title. This is really getting silly.
- chix0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1dugg down
even the things I didn't know about are of no use to me..no need..lame.. - weneedsound, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'm glad you said it. Cyberduck is trash. It has the worst memory leaks I've ever seen. Not to mention the first item you upload to any website causes the spinning beach ball to appear; for at least 30 seconds or more!
The only redeeming value is the extremely simple interface, too bad its got spaghetti code under the hood. - Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Google is your friend....
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hs=BQ3&hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-GB%3Aofficial&q=good+mac+apps&btnG=Search&meta= - neom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1This is a really cunning sales ploy. I went and read the mac apps, then started looking at their product, then realized I came fro the mac apps and got sucked into their product, felt dirty and used, and left.
All sony have to do is list their favourite 5 windows tools on their website, and watch the traffic increase!! -
