- Shando, on 10/12/2007, -17/+133I think it's ridiculous that things like this are mentioned along with the iPod. The vast majority of MP3 players can do any of these things
- nailPuppy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+75What about carrying around a copy of wikipedia with you?
http://encyclopodia.sourceforge.net/en/index.html - IEatHamburgers, on 10/12/2007, -5/+50With the way the back goes from mirror finish to brushed metal faster than you can say "I should have bought a damn case," I doubt it.
- CapeKid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+43"5. Calculate the Right Tip"
Morty: "Another fine meal, and now for my Wizard tip calculator."
Jerry: "Dad, it's got lots of other functions."
Morty: "Don't worry. I'll get to the other functions." - nartvq, on 10/12/2007, -4/+43@Shando
Agreed. There's not much innovation that's unique to iPods here. "5. Calculate the Right Tip" Puleeeze! If you can't divide by 10 and add half that in your head you shouldn't be handling money.
If you want more functionality, you'll need to upgrade to a pda or smartphone. - alf86, on 10/12/2007, -4/+41Agreed (with parent). Why do people get excited about the ipod allowing you to listen to audio files, watch videos, view images, or even store data? That's what it was designed to do. Hell, my three year old iriver H320 can do all of that and more. Yet no one ever touted its "amazing" ability to do what it was designed to do.
None of these are "unexpected." People would scoff at an article like this written about anything else. Hey, this car can do all kinds of things. It can take you to work. It can take you to the grocery store. If you're a partier, it'll even take you to clubs for a night on the town. And it'll even allow you to take friends with you! It's also a music player with its built in stereo! In fact, you can even use it as a set of ipod speakers, by simply plugging in to the stereo with the proper adapter! What an amazing machine. Stay tuned next week when we take a look at your telephone. You can call you mom, call your friends, ask a girl to the dance....
Whoo. Sorry, got a bit carried away there. - wild, on 10/12/2007, -5/+42Thats not a new idea. We used to use tape recorders when I was in high scool. (mid-90s).
If people really want to cheat, they should develop a black light small enough to fit into a watch light. Then you could right crib notes on your arms in a marker that reacts to the light, and the teacher would never be the wiser. Just putting that our there for an enterprising digger... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+40My ex girlfriend would use the back of hers as a mirror to put on makeup.
- sacherjj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35Well if a few days, we will find out that it didn't really stop a bullet, it just indicated that your armor did.
- dtay2827, on 10/12/2007, -5/+35I hate how ipod is basically synonymous to mp3 player. Most of these functions could be implemented using any mp3 player with a decent screen.
- size13, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31Mine stopped a bullet in the line of duty.
- davidrools, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25a lot of other mp3 players make much better voice/audio recorders without having to buy any addon things
- jstohler, on 10/12/2007, -13/+33Dugg down for endorsing the Zune.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3010 uses of an MP3 player more like (or even just an uptodate phone).
Totally lame list anyway - nothing is 'unexpected' in that list. - yish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20and of course, there's http://www.ohmibod.com/
or is that an expected use? - fantasticFlan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Shoes man, throw your shoes.
- sacherjj, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Yes, Harrison Ford uses a fax scanner, which requires movement, to scan something by magically reading the whole screen when placed in front of a monitor and then performs an OCR and stores the results inside the iPod. This technology won't be available to mere mortals until at least 2018.
Why do people look at me with disdain when you can't help but break out in maniacal laughter when you see that kind of crap in the theater? I mean, I don't look at you like that when you are discussing your new case of Herpes with your home girl on your cell phone during the movie.
Saw Firewall at the dollar theater. I over paid. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Will iPod become the Kleenex of tomorrow?
- spider418, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Yep, thank god I got the InvisibleShield (the helicopter blade one http://digg.com/apple/Helicopter_Blade_Plastic_Protects_Your_iPod_From_Scratches ) at the same time I got my 5g black 60gig. It shows fingerprints, but over a year later still clear mirror with no scratches...
Now a Digg member with a girlfriend... That I doubt! - senorcool, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19I do believe they left out one...
http://www.collegehumor.com/picture:1709191 - Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -0/+17The day you become a tissue brand fanboy is the day you've perhaps downloaded too much porn.
- jlebrech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Doesn't Jack Bauer use one to brute force hack a computer? Or is that Harrison Ford?
- sn0re, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Honestly, Firewall was one of the better Hollywood movies tech-wise. Yeah, we know the iPod isn't designed to operate a fax scanner, but you know what, at least it's marginally possible. It would have required a USB interface for the scanner and some custom firmware for the iPod, but it could actually be done. At least they bothered to mention that OCR was necessary instead of simply copying and pasting the numbers from an image.
Harrison Ford was walking around in an honest to god datacenter with a bunch of boring, rack mount servers sitting there doing their thing. If it were any other movie, the "datacenter" would have been a marble-lined room with giant LCD screens everywhere staffed with dozens of barely clothed women. - fantasticFlan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I'm not sure I get your logic. Should I just dump whatever cash I have on the table? Does calculating a tip equal cheapskate?
- Suplyndmnd, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Funny how the two people who are devising ways of cheating, can't spell.
- herrshuster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11go to brightness, turn it all the way up and shine it on stuff
- brewyet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Their 'unexpected' = watch videos
- Darksaber11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Most of those weren't what I'd really call 'unexpected.'
- shartman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I use mine as a shim for my dining room chair.
- spider418, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I used to jog with my old 4G 60gig. My curr consulting gig is in a rural area and running pass deer and often wondered if there were wolves and bears out there... Well... Of coarse ipod made me feel safe... I thought if attacked I could always pick out the wolf pack leader and whack him in the nose with a hunk of metal in my hand.
Now what am I supposed to do with that POS speck of aluminum shuffle !? - tdowling, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12"Will iPod become the Kleenex of tomorrow?"
I think it already is. I've definitely heard people refer to non-iPods as iPods, and just the other day, I was talking to a lady with an iPod who asked me what an "mp3 player" is.
I hate Kleenex, though. I'm more of a Puffs fanboy. - joaob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10The NFL uses Video capable iPod's, issued to each player so that they can study the other teams game footage.
- Tikkimann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8A butt plug.
- coolspray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@wild (#6414243)
Please stop reading my mind and give it back to it's rightful owner (me). I was just thinking today in the rediculous 30 minute parts of exams where you just sit there having finished them that I could have cheated by writing answers in UV pen and just have a little UV Led hidden somewhere. But the watch backlight idea as somehwere to keep the light is genius, that didn't occur to me.
Too sneaky for my liking... You've really freaked me out there.
P.S. What crazy exam would you have to be in so that the invigilators wouldn't notice you reading off/listening to an iPod? - jstohler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7How did they miss the iPod as VIBRATOR?
- confusednazgul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Most of those tips were lame, but I didn't know about iSubwayMaps. That'll come in handy when I'm in San Francisco in a few weeks!
- Taciturn, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13Or the Adobe® Photoshop® software of tomorrow?
- tdowling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The article didn't say that the uses were exclusive to the iPod. It's not inaccurate, just narrow in scope.
- snoweey, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10So basically Anything that can be done with any modern media player.
- violentvinyl, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8If you're calculating tips, you shouldn't have bought the most overpriced MP3 player on the market you cheap bastard.
- kkring24, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6They forgot coaster and paper weight
- mimbomike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Lets not forget it is a way for bootleggers to show off their product on the streets
- sctechguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm not a "macfag" (I don't even own an iPod), but you're a dick.
- bbeahm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It can (and has been) the backup audio source for radio stations while doing studio work. If you do the playlists right you get hours and hours and hours of unnoticeable radio played from an iPod. A cheap and easy backup plan.
- inkubux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Putting Rockbox on it to play OGG files :)
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7#1 - A "Poster Child" for Anti-DRM music environment
#2 - How over priced items can sway some people to judge you by your fortune and not by your self. - gropo, on 10/12/2007, -11/+15@Shando
"The vast majority of MP3 players can do any of these things"
Yes, but the (somewhat) vast majority of MP3 players are also iPods. - Lixie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have to agree with lynx, this list is disappointing. I was hoping they would show how the iPod could be used as an 80GB USB storage device, or the iPod replacing the car CD player and such.
- SushiK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I know some deaf people who use a video ipod to watch videos of people signing books.
- sacherjj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I use my cell phone as a flashlight all the time. If it is really dark and your eyes are adjusted, it lights up the whole room. Point it away from you and walk without bumping into stuff.
