- inactive, on 07/12/2008, -19/+159I agree with the complaints about copy & paste, and the horizontal keyboard for e-mail, but I dispute the notion that Apple should include features on the phone just because it is "standard" on other phones. WAP browsers are standard on most phones. Why is no one complaining about that? Oh, that's right, because Safari Mobile is better, just like e-mail is better than MMS. MMS is a outdated standard, no matter how you look at it. I never used it on my old phone and I won't use it if Apple introduces it in the future. And Apple didn't include flash because Adobe refuses to optimize it for OS X. 90 percent of the time desktop Safari crashes, it's due to flash plug-ins.
As far as I know most other phones don't have a wide screen video iPod with multi-touch controls, Wi-Fi, a FULL internet browser, Visual Voicemail, Visual Call Merge, Visual Call Swap and A-GPS and Google Maps with Satellite View and Live Traffic Info.
By all means, let's discuss how the iPhone can be better, but let's not forget the revolutionary features it DOES have over other phones. - pciulla, on 07/11/2008, -24/+125We're all greedy bastards...It came out hours ago and already, "the iphone is not enough"

- marcoionox, on 07/12/2008, -4/+471. Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS)
2. Stereo Bluetooth / A2DP support
3. Selecting, copying, and pasting text
4. Horizontal keyboard for e-mail and notes
5. Improved predictive text (or the ability to turn it off)
6. Integrated IM application
7. Flash support
8. A better camera and a camcorder
9. Unified e-mail inbox
10. Voice dialing and voice memos - Dylson, on 07/12/2008, -9/+49Why in the hell would anyone want to turn predective texting off? It is a godsend if you ask me.
- wush, on 07/12/2008, -2/+42It's not the number of megapixels that make the camera bad, it's that the whole camera assembly is the cheapest of cheap trash possible
- inactive, on 07/12/2008, -2/+4110 things, 2 pages!!
- bbatsell, on 07/11/2008, -2/+40I was expecting to find a meaningless article, but I agreed with most of it. I don't care about MMS, integrated IM (only because I know they're coming via the AppStore), Flash, or the unified inbox (I prefer to keep things separate). Everything else would be welcome improvements, and some wouldn't be that difficult to do. Hopeful that Apple was focusing on getting the frameworks for third-party development ready and now they're going to go back to improving the base OS even more.
- webmaniac, on 07/12/2008, -5/+34I'm actually glad flash is not supported. Take a look at the article, flash is used for two advertisements on a single page. On my iPhone I wouldn't have seen those ads :)
Besides that, most flash movies just wouldn't have worked. There's no hover state on the iPhone, using dragging in flash would disable dragging the complete web page and even though flash is advertised as vector based, most games or websites don't scale well. So we don't need flash for existing flash content because a big part won't work anyway. And if new content is created just for the iPhone why not create a html/javascript or native version? - tnoy, on 07/12/2008, -4/+28No, the iPhone came out about a year ago. This is a list of things that people have been complaining about since then.
This list is more.. "10 things Apple didn't bother to address, so we're going to bring them up again" - jamada88, on 07/12/2008, -0/+18I said it earlier and I'll say it again:
Apple needs to add a VIDEO cam to it! - mindsnare, on 07/12/2008, -1/+15The only improvements I want is Video, Clipboard, and Flash. I've probably sent about 6 MMS messages in my life... and they were probably to an email address. All the other stuff would be ok I guess, dunno about unified inbox though, that would just confuse me, I like them seperate, I've got my exchange work mail, and my gmail, not for mixing.
God damnit I like exchange support though. - waydee, on 07/12/2008, -10/+23Apple have had a year to bring the iPhone up to spec - they just don't give a ***** about their users complaints.
- bbatsell, on 07/12/2008, -2/+15Agreed, especially on MMS. I hope that the iPhone, et al. spur movement away from the ridiculously overpriced, closed models of SMS and MMS. Ditto on Flash.
- atgmac, on 07/12/2008, -0/+12How about you RTFA.
- bpapa, on 07/12/2008, -11/+23Oh god, another one of THESE articles.
1 - Screw MMS, screw SMS. Tell your friends to get iPhones and then you can email pictures back and forth. FOR FREE. SMS/MMS is a stupid technology which should die, why should iPhone have to support stone-age phones?
2 - I admit it'd be nice to have some kind of wireless headphone support out the box, and the article is right in that a company so into aesthetics is still all about wires. There's got to be a tech reason here, something that will drive up the price or something, because it doesn't make much sense for Apple to not have this.
3 - I had the 1st Generation iPhone for a year, used it heavily, and maybe said to myself once "boy, I wish I could copy and paste this text." It's not a word processor, and contextual links on things like phone numbers and addresses eliminate most of the need for it.
4 - I'm fine with non-landscape in emails, in fact I prefer it for web browsing too. Just used to it I guess.
5 - The guy sucks at typing, the predictive text works awesome. Maybe he should stop typing in landscape mode all of the time and he won't have this problem.
6 - AIM has their own app, wait until September for background process support so you can get badge notifications. End of story. If the author wants to keep bitching about something that we know is coming in the near future, that's fine, I guess he needed another bullet point to fill out his Top 10 list.
7 - This guy clearly hasn't used the new software. YouTube embeds don't show up as broken links anymore, they show as they do embedded on a normal webpage.
8 - The reason why the camera isn't better is well documented in an article that was posted to Digg a few weeks ago.
9 - Hey look, another stupid idea. At least in this one the author realizes it's dumb and shrugs it off in the last sentence.
10 - Voice recognition that doesn't work? Awesome idea. For some reason I'm happy with touching the phone icon, touching favorites, and then touching the name of who I want to call. - KaneElson, on 07/12/2008, -0/+10Whoosh....
- r3zonance, on 07/12/2008, -1/+11MMS is 6-years old.
Whilst having no real size limit, the WAP-gateways tend to limit to 300kb, I can send bigger and better quality emails.
I've sent about 3 MMS message EVER (and that only because they were free). And it was the crappest experience I've ever had. - MtheoryX, on 07/12/2008, -2/+12Carrier pigeons are another form of communication as well. As is the smoke signal, sky writing, and screaming from the mountaintop.
Are you going to complain that the iPhone doesn't have these either?
MMS is dead, deal with it. Or don't buy an iPhone. No one says you HAVE to use the iPhone; I'm pretty sure millions of other people with iPhones will get along just fine without you as a fellow customer. - dagamer34, on 07/12/2008, -2/+11The only use for Flash on the web is a) ads b) video c) animated sites.
a) On the iPhone, ads fill up space when you're going to be zoomed in on content.
b) Flash video would not be hardware accelerated.
c) Animated sites depend on having a mouse to work properly.
Oh, and the fact that Flash sucks up battery life like no other. I'd rather companies use regular HTML+Javascript. - diabulos, on 07/12/2008, -4/+13Championchap, the Apps store is there because Apple makes money off this, not because they care about what people said. There are more fundamental issues with the Iphone (supposed real web browsing but no flash? no cut and paste? no customizable ring tones unless you PAY Apple for it?) it is the same deal as everything Apple makes, it is their way at their cost or nothing, the idea of a customer is well, laughable to Mr Jobs
- inactive, on 07/12/2008, -3/+12When other phones have all the above and more like
stereo bluetooth - weird seeing as the iphone is supposed to be a media device.
Radio
Record radio
Record voice
Can run more then 1 application at a time.
new phones coming out with eGPS
Phones can run flash.
Can have swappable memory
CAN CUT AND ***** PASTE - for Pete's sake!!!
Swappable Battery - not big but annoying.
Try the Samsung i900 or the HTC Diamond, the new HTC touch pro very soon ;) - MalDON, on 07/12/2008, -1/+9My only complaint is you can't add words to the dictionary. It constantly spelled my buses name incorrectly and has confused people in the past.
- dagamer34, on 07/12/2008, -0/+8Those containers are not hardware accelerated. Apple wouldn't bother putting them on the iPhone because you'd get ***** battery life. What the f*$(# is the point of having a bittorrent client on a phone? So you can kill your battery faster? GET REAL.
- inactive, on 07/12/2008, -0/+8Seconded, and VNC, VPN, and SSH
- S4MF1SHER, on 07/12/2008, -1/+9Well Apple fanboys, there's always next year's IPhone..
- dabestdefense, on 07/12/2008, -0/+7Totally, tethering is a must! A pretty phone browser is nice and all but nothing beats my notebook. Now that it has 3G I want to exploit it, not view some YouTube and web pages a little faster. Sadly I doubt we will see tethering, AT&T and Apple do not want us to have it.
- osko2052, on 07/12/2008, -3/+10How about a removable battery? I read today the 3g iphone battery goes dead after 4.5 hours of use.
- inkswamp, on 07/12/2008, -0/+7I think the people digging you down aren't catching your sarcasm. I despise Flash not because of what it is, but because developers use it as a crutch. I can't believe all the things I've seen on Web sites done with Flash that could have been done just as effectively and with less overhead in DHTML/Ajax. Beyond that is the fact that Flash doesn't behave like it's part of your browser (i.e., can't right-click and open a Flash link in a new tab or window.) I also can't understand why it's become the standard for video delivery when there are plenty of other, better ways to do it. Personally, I have nothing against Flash when it's used in moderation, but it's gotten so out-of-hand that I wouldn't mind seeing it die off now. The same thing happened with Java applets back in the late 90s. Too much of it started to annoy people and bog down browsers and it just died off.
- FoxOrian, on 07/12/2008, -2/+9I thought PC World would have at least realized that more megapixels doesn't make a better cell phone camera. More megapixels on a lens that small means the photos will just become blurry instead of pixelated. Geez, when will people really come to realize this? A budget SLR camera can take photos just as good as a high level professional SLR if you give it a good enough lens.
Improve the lens before stacking on more pixels.
Elsewhere, I would like to see some of these improvements made, like cut/copy/paste -- as they CAN be done easily through firmware updates in the future...
Give it time as well, and I'm sure some quality options will start to appear in the app store. This is only the beginning after all. - r3zonance, on 07/12/2008, -1/+81. DivX/Xvid are just derivatives of MPEG-4 (DivX being proprietary)
2. MAME, that's software so not outside the realms of possibility, although the SDK terms do seem to forbid it.
3. Don't be a *****, BitTorrent would never be allowed by the carriers. Besides you have the iTunes Store for movies and TV shows. Except where there are much faster networks you can't download over-the-air TV anyway. Some innovative content producers (i.e. the BBC) do have iPlayer to allow you to watch TV programmes over the air.
4. Pre-release open source apps, what the hell does that even mean?
5. MSN Messenger, surely that's Microsoft's fault. WM phones don't always allow MSN Messenger because of carrier restrictions (even in the UK).
6. VNC, whatever not too fussed. There have been things like this demonstrated so, so I don't expect it to be too far off. - r3zonance, on 07/12/2008, -4/+11Flash is crap. It doesn't lend itself well to the creation of applications, as it is an animation tool, nothing else.
Macromedia (and now Adobe) are just bolstering the animation with more and more broken iterations of an Application framework. - shmajent, on 07/12/2008, -7/+13Buried for whining. If it doesn't have what you want, shut up and don't buy it.
- SealandRes1, on 07/12/2008, -0/+6Sorry, just because something is new doesn't mean it's better than everything else before it.

1. Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) -- SOFTWARE
2. Stereo Bluetooth / A2DP support -- SOFTWARE
3. Selecting, copying, and pasting text -- SOFTWARE
4. Horizontal keyboard for e-mail and notes -- SOFTWARE
5. Improved predictive text (or the ability to turn it off) -- SOFTWARE
6. Integrated IM application -- SOFTWARE
7. Flash support -- OVERATED (but fixed with SOFTWARE)
8. A better camera and a camcorder -- Partially SOFTWARE
9. Unified e-mail inbox -- SOFTWARE
10. Voice dialing and voice memos -- SOFTWARE
Awesome, they can all be fixed without getting a new phone. Except for the ones that don't really matter (7/8). - r3zonance, on 07/12/2008, -0/+6"2 - I admit it'd be nice to have some kind of wireless headphone support out the box, and the article is right in that a company so into aesthetics is still all about wires. The tech reason would be piss poor battery life. - HolyChimp, on 07/12/2008, -2/+8@r3zonance:

Who cares about the internet on my phone, my PC does a much better job.

Maybe some people don't want to carry around a phone a camcorder and digital SLR on the off chance they might need to take a video or a picture. - Gryphon09, on 07/12/2008, -0/+6And the 8GB iPhone costs 199...
Twice the storage space for one third the price? - Qumahlin, on 07/12/2008, -0/+6Flash is not important for web browsing. I saw not important because if you go to any of the ranking portals such as alexa and look at the top websites, most do not require flash. Flash is actually a web unfriendly technology and TONS of well respected developers would love to get rid of it. Flash has become a way for developers to do pretty things on their sites with ease at the expense of how sloppy the code is and how much CPU power it takes.
More and more sites are slowly switching to using Ajax and Silverlight as their operation is much more efficient and requires a 1/10th of the CPU power of flash. - r3zonance, on 07/12/2008, -3/+9And your Blackberry DOESN'T do most of what the iPhone does do, so what's your point?
- wilsondus, on 07/12/2008, -0/+6You forgot the biggest ones....
1. make you faster than a speeding bullet
2. make you impervious to physical infliction
3. make you never age
4. give you all the knowlage in the universe
5. tell you exactly were Bin Laden is at all times
Damn, until they fix this to meet my sandards, they can suck it... I wouldn't want this POS... my phone's got these features already - ohplease, on 07/12/2008, -16/+22The #1 reason I wont be getting an iphone is that it is too locked down. Apple decides what apps you can run.
So you won't be seeing:
1. DivX or any other popular codec
2. MAME
3. Bittorrent client (so downloading a show episode OTA and playing it = not possible)
4. Pre release open source apps
5. MSN messenger
6. VNC
7. ...
Apple wants to stand inbetween developers and iphone users. This effectively removes administrative control from the device. Apple will never defeat Windows Mobile if they insist on determining what users can and can't do with their own hardware. - inactive, on 07/12/2008, -2/+8^ This, kids, is how you FAIL
- r3zonance, on 07/12/2008, -3/+8That doesn't wash as a comparison, as you are talking about a desktop computer, with a mouse.
Hardly going to slag off most desktop computers because they don't allow touch (let alone multi-touch) controls now are you?
Didn't think so. - DesdinovaEL, on 07/12/2008, -1/+6I'm going to throw out my 2 cents on the iphone camera.... I know it doesnt measure up as far as picture quality to most any stand-alone camera or to many built-ins on other devices but honestly, I really like it and heres why. Recently Kodak announced they were discontinuing polaroid film production. It's true polaroid pictures are [pretty low-quality but people loved them.... maybe not enough to keep them in business, but the charm of those pictures was they had some low-quality warmth to them that gave them character....
Honestly Iam not trying to be an apple apologist here but I think iphone pics have that same warmth in a lot of ways.... I just use the camera to take party pics and peoples faces for my contacts.... not doing any work for National Geographic or wedding photos or anything like that....I just like the certain character of lower megapixel pictures..... call me crazy - cgreentx, on 07/12/2008, -0/+5@r3zonance So you carry your Digital SLR and video camera with you every time you leave the house? Most of the stuff on the list is an issue as they are all features I'm giving up moving to the 3G iPhone as my current phone offers all of them. Right now the pros outweigh the cons, but ask me again in a month.
And if the answer includes the step "Jailbreak the phone" its not the answer. - dagamer34, on 07/12/2008, -0/+5In the meantime, go download Pandora on your iPhone/iPod Touch.
- djh816, on 07/12/2008, -0/+5"The lack of Flash support means Safari fumbles when it comes to YouTube clips embedded in blog posts or other pages; those just show up as broken plugin icons, with no option to launch the clips in the iPhone's separate YouTube app."
Um...no it doesn't. It works fine with embedded youtube clips: http://image.bayimg.com/lajhgaabo.jpg - MtheoryX, on 07/12/2008, -1/+6No, I haven't.
Or was that a rhetorical question? -
