- inactive, on 10/25/2007, -1/+29I use Google Docs on my MacBook during lectures, the best part is sharing the document with other students in class. Real time editing is great too.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/25/2007, -4/+22They missed MS Office/iWork. I'd recommend iWork as it's a lot cheaper and supports Office 2007 file formats, something the current version of Office for the Mac doesn't do. Just try getting by at a university without a decent word processor that can work with .doc(x) files. TextEdit doesn't cut it.
- johnkyoungoh, on 10/30/2007, -0/+18What is this Caffeine nonsense? Why not just open up Energy Saver?
- NewSc2, on 10/25/2007, -2/+181. AdiumX (to chat with girls)
1a. Mail (to email girls and receive copies of last year's homework)
2. TextEdit (to jot down girls phone numbers... and take notes)
3. iTunes (to go with your iPod)
4. VLC (to watch porn downloaded from dorm network)
4a. Firefox (for youporn.com, erowid.org, and wikipedia)
4b. Azureus (porn)
5. Calculator (cuz you failed Math 1A)
6. WoW
7. Warcraft III
8. BootCamp (to play Counterstrike)
9. Counterstrike
10. iWork (to turn in a professional-looking paper that you coughed up overnight) - antitab, on 10/25/2007, -0/+14Dunno what awful college you go to, but even the small classes here have at least two people with laptops. I'm in a larger one (not lecture hall sized, though) right now and there are about 10 people with laptops. Also, if your peers are judging you based on the technology you use in class, you have pretty ***** peers.
- PrettyMuchBryce, on 10/25/2007, -0/+11Too bad it costs money. One thing most college students don't have.
- inactive, on 10/27/2007, -0/+9I always like these "10 best apps" listings because the comments offer much better suggestions than the original article. Dugg.
- totorototoro, on 10/25/2007, -0/+9Mellel for documents
Scrivener for outlining projects
Perian/Flip4Mac for watching anything beyond Quicktime. - kris33, on 10/28/2007, -2/+10He forgot the best and most useful app, Genius. It is a really great app that have helped me improving my test results a lot! It's a shame that Genius is quite unknown and that most people have not heard of it!
- AceyS, on 10/25/2007, -0/+8Why don't you just use the OS X versions of those programs... (sorry if one of those isn't mac compatible, but I know most are)
- AceyS, on 10/25/2007, -0/+8I too have a brother. Come in salesman.
- robohoe, on 10/25/2007, -1/+9NeoOffice.
Open Office optimize for macs. - mercurysquad, on 11/06/2007, -2/+10Schoolhouse is way too buggy, and many UI elements simply don't respond. With the feature set, Schoolhouse can be a great commercial product. It's a pity it's not even a usable freeware.
- MBarnwell, on 10/25/2007, -0/+7don't discount NeoOffice
- theShiba, on 10/25/2007, -6/+13Openoffice.org

- res8qr6m, on 10/25/2007, -3/+9NeoOffice?
- inactive, on 10/25/2007, -0/+6Cool. I like Google Docs because all my friends already have gmail accounts so it's really easy to collaborate lecture notes and group projects.
- Drealoth, on 10/28/2007, -0/+6What a horrible name for an application - it's completely unsearchable. Searches for "genius' and "genius apple" have nothing. Searching "genius os x" turns up the application's version tracker page.
http://web.mac.com/jrc/Genius/ - gujsg, on 10/28/2007, -2/+8iFlash should be number 1 on that list. its very helpful.
- roberto_deneero, on 10/27/2007, -0/+61. NeoOffice
2. Acquisition
3. VMWare Fusion
4. Ethernal (for watching other students' chat conversations in class)
5. Cyber Duck
6. Google Notifier
7. Handbrake
8. Skype
9. Transmission - th3wiz4rd, on 10/25/2007, -0/+6Yeah, Parallels 3 is decent, but VMWare Fusion is faster and slightly cheaper.
- northernmunky, on 10/25/2007, -0/+6its pretty good, I use Neooffice and I'm actually liking Pages (part of iWork) a lot too
- mozzep, on 10/25/2007, -0/+6energy saver is two clicks? Click on percentage, click on "custom". but if that's too much for you, there's always a quicksilver hotkey.
- Zzone, on 10/25/2007, -1/+7too bad the gimp sucks ass.
- th3wiz4rd, on 10/25/2007, -0/+6Dugg for mentioning that Caffeine is basically worthless, because it is.
- JustinHorne, on 10/25/2007, -0/+6As a 1) Mac using 2) college student, I have no idea how that wasn't on the list. It's essentially my primary school app, next to Word.
- screwattackthis, on 10/25/2007, -0/+5Never used a mac or anything, but Caffeine seems to need only a single click. It can be reverted back to its original state with only another click.
Is this possible with Energy Saver? - nakile, on 10/25/2007, -1/+6A great free alternative to iFlash is Ebbinghaus. Basically the same thing, but for $0.00. It can also export the flash cards to your iPod as image files, for studying on the go.
- DMCer, on 10/28/2007, -0/+5Actually, I think Genius is the best
http://web.mac.com/jrc/Genius/ - LukeAskew, on 10/25/2007, -0/+5SerialSeeker.
- aviazn, on 10/25/2007, -0/+5First, you can't turn off screensavers from Energy Saver. Also, although the Better Performance setting prevents the computer from going to sleep, you'll have to specify a custom Energy Saver preset if you also want to prevent the display from dimming. Caffeine does all three with one click.
- Tycal, on 10/25/2007, -4/+9F*CK!!
why did i get a PC? - burke, on 10/25/2007, -0/+5Every time I assign an assignment to a course, Schoolhouse crashes. I wish it didn't, since it looks great otherwise.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 10/25/2007, -2/+7Flip4Mac for .wmv, VLC for anything else. Perian is a bit spotty.
- th3wiz4rd, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4GIMPShop is pretty decent, not as UI-Slick or simple as Paint.Net though.
- inactive, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4Bootcamp and Parallels. Matlab. Grapher just isn't good enough to do most things past Calc II.
- kygeographer, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4Why would you pay for a closed source application, when can get the same thing, open source for free?
- shahruz84, on 12/17/2008, -8/+12parallels should probably be on that list.
- BrainInAJar, on 10/26/2007, -2/+6because you bought in to the apple haters FUD...
- supermanred, on 10/25/2007, -9/+13No, it crashes too much and too susceptible to viruses. A Unix based operating system is preferred for college students, stable and utilizes your hardware better. You can run windows in parallels or on a second partition, but its pretty much useless once you've used OS X for more than a week.
- inactive, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4"For watching other students' chat conversations in class"
WTH? - northernmunky, on 10/27/2007, -1/+5I'll throw in iWork '08 suite in there... as much as I do like Neooffice... Pages, Keynote and Numbers makes openoffice look like junk. The built in templates for thesis and dissertations make it well worth paying £55 for. In fact I wish I used it for mine but I graduated the year before it was released...
- antitab, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4Seashore is what you want. It's based on GIMP but with a native Cocoa UI and not nearly as much clutter.
http://seashore.sourceforge.net/ - dmightx, on 09/21/2008, -0/+4Who cares about them anyway? You're using your laptop to help you out not to help you socially.
- mercurysquad, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4It's called "Seashore". Very lacking in features as of now.
- Bamborzled, on 10/27/2007, -2/+6But if they have a Mac machine they can ALSO get REAL Office, made specifically for the Mac!
- funkyshepherd, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4http://www.duggmirror.com ?
- northernmunky, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3believe it or not some people go to college to learn! (but I will agree Safari makes a great porn browser ;)
- Monstarr, on 10/25/2007, -1/+4I feel so dumb for not thinking about Google Docs and it's usefulness in a lecture.
