I have no use for an Mp3 player.
My house has a CD player.
My car has a CD player.
My Mac has a CD player
I don't use headphones.
The iPod requires me to change my lifestyle to meet it's needs...
I need round holes, not square holes.
For $99 I might buy the toy, for $399? Why?
Doesn't a Mac with a CDR undermine the need for most of this? All that's left is the number of songs you can play and the ability to listen to all of them with headphones anywhere. Do I really need ALL my songs ALL the time?
uhm, no.
Won't last. Another Cube.

I'm sure we could replace mp3 player with iPhone today and we'll do the same thing in 2-3 years. Remember when they said the iPhone was going to bomb? - SWiG, on 10/12/2007, -7/+46My roughly would probably be 50,000
- michaelb1, on 10/12/2007, -10/+40I am proud/ashamed to say I bought 5 of them since 2001.
- TKn00b, on 10/12/2007, -10/+39Holy crap I bought an iPod today
- cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+33WTF did you buy 7 iPods for?! I do admit that they are nice products and have the best UI of any mp3 player, but 7? I think you need rehab.
- SethBoy, on 10/12/2007, -9/+36Take down the Walkman!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -29/+51... and how many were replacements for broken iPods?
- AllnightChemist, on 10/12/2007, -15/+36@robertcamb5
Have you tried rubbing an iPod on it? - slalomskier, on 10/12/2007, -16/+37PICS OR IT DIDN'T HAPPEN
Thanks apple, you have made my life so much easier.
Now come out with a 12 inch MPB!!! - ChrisGilmore, on 10/12/2007, -11/+27Congratulations Apple!
- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Here's some great quotes from the MacRumors forum that day:
This isn't revoltionary!
I still can't believe this! All this hype for something so ridiculous! Who cares about an MP3 player? I want something new! I want them to think differently!
Why oh why would they do this?! It's so wrong! It's so stupid!
All that hype for an MP3 player? Break-thru digital device? The Reality Distiortion Field™ is starting to warp Steve's mind if he thinks for one second that this thing is gonna take off. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20"I knew the iPod would sell well when it was introduced" - NSResponder
Sadly, I was among those who said "Huh???" when Apple originally introduced the iPod. Glad to see I (and everyone else who thought the same thing) was wrong.
Here's to another 100 million and more... - wvdavis, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20That is roughly 49825 per day.
- etx313, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13That's over NINE THOUSAND!!!
- greatblackowl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8100,000,000 / 5 = 20,000,000
20,000,000 / 365 = 54794.5
I'd say it's closer to 49825 than 550 - TylerLavite, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15congratulations Apple thanks for making the greatest portable music player!
- opiv421, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12haha zune
- Decimit, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12It's failure to think on your own when you choose the item that provides the options and quality that you want?
- airiox, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13http://www.apple.com/
while it lasts - cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8@rockyrowks - No, it isn't. They have no DRM and are covered under fair use.
- Just1nD, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8a company selling 100 million of anything seems impressive enough. but there you go taking the fun out of it, party-pooper.
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Apple will never win with some people. In the mid-90s, when I remained a Mac user as the entire world shifted to Windows 95, I constantly heard the argument that if Macs were so damn good, everyone would be using them and that the market chooses the best quality product and if I had any brains, I'd get a PC. Nevermind that I didn't care what others were using and that the Mac as it was in the mid-90s worked fine for my purposes. No, the consumers had chosen and Mac users were always "wrong."
Now that Apple has just such a product in the iPod, the Apple haters have to ratchet up their illogical position even further. It's no longer the market choosing the best product. Rather, it's that people can't think for themselves. Ah yes, if your precious Microsoft starts to lose a game, just shift the goalposts around. That's a great way to protect your ego when it's all tangled up with the success of your chosen corporate entity. - matt23423, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Bill Gates had actually said that Apple's success would not last.
http://ohcash.com/2007/02/09/bill-gates-and-apple/
“I don’t think the success of the iPod can continue in the long term, as good as Apple may be”
With 100 million of them sold, I think we can all agree that not too many companies can achieve this. - gregdigg, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Some people are never impressed.
- kmb1794, on 10/12/2007, -13/+16Mac is the new MacDonald's
- dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I chose to get my ipod LONG before it became "cool" to get one. I go to the gym now and I feel like one of the sheep when I've got mine, but until someone creates something that's as simple and easy to use, and looks as nice as an ipod, I'll stick with what I've got.
I've had 6 ipods since 2003, migrating between nanos and shuffles as secondary "gym" ipods, but I loves me some 60 GB ipod.
I'm ready for this widescreen ipod already. If his Steveness wants me to watch video on my ipod, we're going to need a bigger screen.
And it's about time for the ipod to get a visualizer on it already. I'm not concerned about burn in or anything, but man I'd love to have a visualizer from the TV output. - Quix, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9"Now that Apple has just such a product in the iPod, the Apple haters have to ratchet up their illogical position even further." - inkswamp
Agreed. I find it hilarious when Apple-hating Windows users refer to iPod owners as "sheep." Um, riiiight... - u8myfoood, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5now how many of the users have actually used another comparable mp3 (Zune, Zen Vision M, Sansa's, Zen V, Yepp's, A5's, etc.)?
- moudig, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7At the current pace, Apple is selling 50-60 million/year.
In 2006, they sold 46.4 million iPods. And the rate is going up: this quarter (January-March) they must have sold ~ 11 million iPods. Same quarter, a year ago: 8.5 million - vdxc, on 09/29/2008, -1/+4Apple won't be releasing a new iPod too soon, they'll wait for the iPhone buzz to die down first before releasing an iPod update.
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Does that really bother you? I'd never even noticed. Perhaps you think about this too much.
- dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6God, to think if the first 100 million Playstation 2's had been the one's with the busted and ***** lasers that defocus.
I think revisions give manufacturers the ability to refine and hone the product into something really nice. I can't imagine having a non-backlit, B&W ipod with a mechanical scroll wheel in today's market. Bleh. - moudig, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Amazing! I am presenting facts and I get burried!
Sour grapes for you, Microsoft fanboys! - Trublmakr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Wow,...that makes you one of about 5.9 billion ipod-less people on the planet. What are the odds of that eh?
- oldhat, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8I tried get a non-ipod mp3 player.
I bought two Creative Zen Vision:M 30GB. Both were DOA. Dead, no charging, not left overnight, dead. I did not go back to try a third.
I bought a Sandisk Sansa 8GB for the direct file access, to hell with special software to manipulate my files. Great, drag and drop my files onto it like a external hard drive. But then the Sansa would "refresh database" for 5 minutes EVERYTIME I disconnected from the computer. And when I browse for my music? Duh, it still searches by genre, album. All my mp3's are scattered, oddly named, but organized loosely into folders. Sansa is half-assed for me then.
I tried others, but long story short: ipods win. There is no viable alternative. After 5 years, now in 2007, dozens of powerful, rich companies, with all the low cost tech that globalism have wrought, have all culminated in jack squat!
The free market has failed to innovate, and the ipod is proof. It's not that it's so great, it's that the others are so terrible!
Ironically, I bought two 30GB ipods this weekend...did I win? - cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9I was there on day one--back when everyone was seriously questioning Apple's business sense for releasing an MP3 player.
- DarknessGP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my point being, alot of people probably bought multiple revisions, so it's not as accurate. It'd be like Sony including PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP sales into one massive number and saying "We sold $X worth of Playstations"
- wvdavis, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8I have four, but I think that I have spent more in accessories than I have on the iPods.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@ Quix; "Here's to another 100 million and more..."
Don't you mean phones? - robshoy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I read this as I was holding my fourth iPod. Very happy to have helped Apple reach the 100 Mil marking stone. ^_^ Congrats Apple.
- dgblackout, on 10/12/2007, -10/+11i bought 7 ipods last year.
as soon as they bring out more i'm likely to do the same
ah well, they do look nice. - oldhat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5wtf?
- Brows, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Does anyone else laugh to them selves when they see another person listening to a CD player? I think its weird, once in a while I see someone on the train with a tape player....now that ***** is even weirder.
- jsaya, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2meh - iTunes sucks... Copy/Paste FTW!
- royalwcheese, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Fanboy? Who is bringing up a game system in an Ipod related article? Yes, you are THAT GUY.
- techmaster7b, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Well now we know there are at least 100 million ignorant people in the world.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Here I am wishing I had a Zune...
Damn siren call of subscription music... -
