Those black and white departure/arrival boards at train stations are called split-flap displays. Split-flap is a very wonderful word and here is an equally wonderful clock, based on the split-flap concept. The brainchild of Dutch clock and design company Cloudnola, the Flipping Out clock sits on a shelf or hangs on the wall to tell you time with black flaps that flip to count out the hours and minutes of your day.

The clock is a substantial fourteen inches wide and stands over five inches tall. Not as big as something announcing an Amtrak arrival, but not insubstantial. It takes one D cell battery to get those split-flap numbers flipping and it's guaranteed not to look like any other clock in your house.
