Ad Blocking Will Kill The Internet And Other Facts
WHAT WE LEARNED THIS WEEK

SOMEONE Still HAS TO PAY FOR THIS

Internet Ads And Ad Blockers Are Both Terrible

Websites with display ads? Terrible. People who gleefully tout the use of ad blockers? Terrible. Making things and putting them on the Internet costs money. Conversely, users browsing the Internet expect to pay nothing.1 The only solution, is to create ads that people actually want to look at. This requires an in-house creative team, who need to be paid. Once you have that, you need account managers, who also need to be paid, to reach out to brands to convince them that they should pay you to run your own ads with their brand attached. This, of course, is only possible once you've established a healthy and devoted following from all that great content you've published — which requires writers and editors and designers and engineers, who all need to be paid.  So keep blocking those display ads. You'll eventually get the Internet you deserve!

TALK ABOUT A BUZZKILL

Animals Hate Drones

Drones are surest sign that we live in the future, but, on balance, they are bad. They make cool videos! But they also delay flights, and prevent first-responders from doing their jobs. It appears that animals already instinctively know how awful drones are, as this compilation demonstrates.

A GRAIN OF TRUTH

Rice Will Actually Save Your Wet Phone

Hastily throwing a wet phone into a bucket of rice is the most well-known piece of neo-folk wisdom.2 But does it actually work? Like other pieces of received wisdom, some swear by it while others think it's a waste of rice. The truth is, the rice isn't saving your phone; it's saving your phone from yourself. The worst thing you can do when your phone gets dunked is to try and turn it back on again. Throwing it in a bucket of rice might not be the best way to suck all the water out, but it does keep you from messing with it.

IT REALLY IS NERF OR NOTHING

Nerf Guns Are Brilliantly Engineered

They may be cheap plastic guns that fire foam darts, but they're well-designed cheap plastic guns that fire foam darts. Honestly, the way Nerf gun engineers designed their multi-barrel guns is clever as heck.

ONCE GREENHOUSE GASES CONSUME OUR PLANET

Beans Are The Food Of The Future

According to researchers, climate change will wipe out most of our food supplies. Meat, nuts, and produce will be a distant memory as sea levels rise, winters become colder and summers hotter. But not beans! The researchers say there are about 30 species of beans that will still grow even after we've damaged our planet's weather patterns beyond repair. Which is good, because we'll need plenty of farts to keep our spirits high as humanity slowly dies off.

DON'T GIVE IT A HAND

Science Has Created A Robot That's Literally Unstoppable… At Rock-Paper-Scissors

This is how the robot apocalypse starts. First we program a single hand to anticipate what three pre-determined shapes we're going to throw at it so that it can never lose. Next, it analyzes our military capabilities and uses that knowledge to systematically destroy humanity. It is only a matter of time.
