- arizonagrandma, on 02/02/2008, -49/+428It's so sad to me that some are so far gone...so cynical that they cannot see the once in a lifetime opportunity to elect a great, great man as our President. He will inspire the people of this country to stand up and fight for all that we need to restore our democracy. I've waited 40 years - since Bobby Kennedy - to see another person of this caliber as a potential President. Dare to hope!
- geddon, on 02/02/2008, -63/+18Dare to hope for a president whose voting record is nearly identical to Billary Clinton?
Some of those people you speak of are able to see a whiz bang marketing blitz when they see one.- DavidtheDuke, on 02/02/2008, -18/+8You know, you could be right, and it wouldn't suprise me. I think the people here *want* to believe Obama is who they want him to be. Maybe he is, and you're just a troll, but I find it just as likely (if not more realistic) that is the better speaker and all these videos are stemming from people 'hoping' he is the man they want him to be, rather than researching and learning that he is the man by his past actions.
- Neiby, on 02/02/2008, -19/+7You're exactly correct. He simply isn't the person they think he is. Just look at his past record and you'll see he's just not that different. However, he is charismatic and he's a fantastic speaker. And the most charismatic candidates usually win. Not always, but usually.
Obama talks a good game about change, but I've yet to hear how he is substantially different from anyone else. The only candidates who would bring real change are Kucinich, Gravel and Paul. The rest (on both sides) are bought and paid for.- PeppermintPig, on 02/02/2008, -3/+1Nobody is disagreeing with you, but the diggs would say otherwise! How unfortunate that we can't actually have a dialog.

- KSUdesigner, on 02/02/2008, -4/+27Are you serious? They are both democrats, of course they are going to have similar voting records. People join a particular political party because they share similar views with the other people in that party. Would you really expect to see a sharp contrast between Clinton and Obama's voting records?
- PeppermintPig, on 02/02/2008, -5/+2They are so much alike in terms of policy that it does beg the question: Is this a personality contest? It's okay if you answer yes, by the way. Kucinich is a Democrat, but he's nothing like Obama or Clinton. Gravel as well... different approaches altogether.
- KSUdesigner, on 02/02/2008, -1/+1Unfortunately to many people it is a personality contest. Those of us who actually give a ***** about what happens to the future of this country realize that there are fundamental differences between the two.
- chaosium, on 02/03/2008, -0/+2"Kucinich is a Democrat, but he's nothing like Obama or Clinton."
He's nothing like Ron Paul either, but idiots still saw him as a replacement.

- br0ck, on 02/02/2008, -6/+35I'm sorry this is getting long, but it's frustrating that people keep saying they're the same just because they and all of the democratic members of congress vote similarly.
How about the "issue" of being able to compel our governments and other governments to work together and work with us to get things done? What if George Bush had actually had the ability to compel and convince and had been able to get a world coalition together to work with us in Iraq? Which will be better at this? Obama or Hillary?
What about the issues written about by George Lakoff the other day? They have striking differences when you look beyond war and health care an determine what the real important "issues" are: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/george-lakoff/what-c ...
Read Obama's speech before the Iraq war and compare that to Hillary's vote to authorize the war. http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Barack_Obama's_Iraq_ ...
These two videos from 2002 also compare and contrast the mental faculties and foreign policy capabilities of the two candidates:
Hillary: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkS9y5t0tR0
Obama: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXzmXy226po
As for supporting the troops, Obama has consistently worked to help veterans, stop the war and take blackwater to task. He is the top troop contributions to a democratic candidate are to Obama with $58000. He's just behind the top troop donations to a Republican with Ron Paul getting $63000.
One big vote difference is the Military Commissions Act of 2006 which Hillary voted for and Obama voted against. You can read about all the problems with it including the suspending of Habeus Corpus and the fact that it can be applied to US citizens at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_Commissions_ ...
There are quite a few other things too like the fact that Obama has been introducing very compelling legislation (criminalize election day fraud, campaign finance reform, Iraq War De-escalation Act of 2007, bill to stop military from using personality disorder discharges while not treating them, bill to increase transparency of gov't, bill to prevent veteran homelessness, coal to liquids financing, bill to eliminate health care imbalances, bill to require dept of defense to give troops protective equipment, bill to eliminate blackwater and other contractor immunity from criminal prosecution in Iraq, bill to officially state that force is not authorized against Iran. Compare this to Hillary has been working on (video game family protection act, increase size of army by 80k, zero emissions building act).
Obama: http://www.govtrack.us/congress/person.xpd?id=4006 ...

- vertinox, on 02/02/2008, -38/+14A great orator, a good hair cut, and catchy theme song a great leader does not make.
I know he's better than the current crop, but it just makes me ill when people go with their gut feeling without realizing they need to look at what they have done in the past rather than what their "message" claims to do. Remember people... Image has nothing to do with leadership. Any politician worth his salt can lie good.- iainc, on 02/02/2008, -3/+9"[...]but it just makes me ill when people go with their gut feeling[...]"
There is a considerable school of thought that would disagree with you there. There is nothing wrong with gut-feeling. - crweaks23, on 02/02/2008, -0/+6vertinox - You're insinuating that all Obama has going for him is a catchy theme song and a good hair cut? You claim to be knowledgeable and plead for others to do their own research, yet you say one of the most ignorant comments on this board. Whether or not Obama is the best choice for president is obviously debatable, but for you to claim that this man is not a respectable, educated, intelligent and charismatic candidate is idiotic and hypocritical to your entire post. Also, your claim that "image has nothing to do with leadership" is incorrect. Image does play a role in leadership.

- rooster113, on 02/03/2008, -2/+1Some research would tell you that he voted to fund the war, the PATRIOT ACT and his wife is on the board of directors of one of if not the most powerful special interest groups in the country. And this is not a 'once in a lifetime opportunity' - he's not going to expire if he's not elected.- huckleup, on 02/02/2008, -5/+14Hope is not the sole purview of the religious. We all have hopes and dreams. Religious zealots trying to take claim for everything that is good about mankind is exactly the problem we face.
- runCMD, on 02/02/2008, -5/+0You don't have to be religious to find hope in Church.
Your comments reveal you know very little about the spirit of the man you follow - or me for that matter.- huckleup, on 02/02/2008, -0/+2Likewise, one need not be in a church to find 'real hope'. I don't dismiss anyone's path to finding hope wherever they may find it. It's your kind of divisive rhetoric claiming to know what is 'real' and what is not tell me all I need to know about you.
- runCMD, on 02/02/2008, -5/+0You don't have to be religious to find hope in Church.

- cliffzdude, on 02/02/2008, -22/+15Oddly enough I have no horse in this race. I usually vote conservative, but there is no hope on the Republican side as Ron Paul has a snowball's chance in hell of becoming elected. He's a very poor orator, and comes across as bat ***** crazy to many. Obama is the opposite. Very polished, very smooth, makes me want to vote for him because I really, really like him. But, that's where it ends. I won't vote for a man because I like to listen to him speak. His politics have to at least somewhat match up with mine. That's what is so ironic, Obama's politics of tax more and spend more than we already are go against the grain of what I think most Digger's believe. Yes, he may bring our boys back from Iraq but that won't stop the fiscal bleeding, we'll still be hemorrhaging money and his tax more and spend more politics won't fix anything.
His fantastic speeches say very nothing. They're very motivating, but they have the content of hot air popped popcorn. That is to say, not so much. - digitalunit, on 02/02/2008, -25/+10Ron Paul would have been better.

I'm sorry, I won't conform to the majority opinion. If you want to, that's your choice but your group-think ideology isn't going to convince me.

I don't want to hear this great, great man say "Yes we can". I want to hear him say, "Yes I will". Determination to just do it, whatever it takes, until we can't, because we're here, not because we can. Because we exist. Because we are free.
I don't hope and pray for a better future, I make it happen.- Izz24703, on 02/02/2008, -0/+9I remind you of a great speech by a great man: John F. Kennedy. In his speech at Rice University in Texas, he says those famous words, "WE choose to go to the moon" Not I choose to go to the moon, but WE choose. WE! Never doubt that one leader with a great voice can truly change the course of history. When people feel inspired and actually CARE about OUR government, we can help shape its future; OUR future. He accepts millions of dollars of lobbyist money, how is that change? He wants to raise our taxes, how is that change? He says that it is justified to invade countries who need to be democratized, how is that change? He voted for the Patriot Act... twice... how is that change?
As you can probably tell I'm already locked into Ron Paul. And i feel the same way as you do regarding Obama about Ron Paul.

Obama is the only one who can really inspire an outstanding number of us, from liberal to conservative, to take the feeling of being powerful in our own country back. You people are sooo easy to seduce! - phike, on 02/02/2008, -1/+11Inspiring them to do what?
ANSWER: Change your mindset about the USA, Change the world's perspective about this country......and just maybe, Terrorists' mindsets about the USA can change, too.
What do you think seduces Stevebee? Old and grizzled military vets? or maybe its the wives and sons of former Presidents that are looking to capitalize on their last names?
- stevebee, on 02/02/2008, -9/+3Inspiring them to do what?
- wendelgee2, on 02/02/2008, -2/+11Well, he's been an urban community organizer, Illinois state and United States Senator. More to the point, he has positions on the issues that most of us agree with. So, if you want to see what he's done, go look it up. If you want to know what he'll do...well, that's really more important, isn't it?
- iainc, on 02/02/2008, -1/+6I'd wager this "empty suit," as you put it, has done a lot more for a greater number of people than you will in your entire miserable life. He is a very inspirational leader, he's articulate and he motivates people. His style appears to be inclusive, rather than divisive. Government for the many, rather than the few; who wouldn't want that?
- onefinalstep, on 02/03/2008, -1/+1What the ***** are you talking about? Check list ... He is: "very inspirational" "articulate (he can talk?)" "motivating" "inclusive" and he is for "Government for the many instead of the few" - great arguments.
Question: What are his ***** Policies? none of his god damn supporters Ever argue on his behalf based on policies. I'm aware that a large portion of America is too dumb to care or even understand how the government works, but it is amazing to me that this guy has completely capitalized on that voting block. YES WE CAN!!!!!! YAAAYYYYY!!!!! I Have no idea what I'm talking about !!!! SCARLETT Johanson !!!!!! - give me a ***** break.- iainc, on 02/03/2008, -0/+1Educate yourself before showing the world what a tool you can be.

- Toowanbee, on 02/03/2008, -1/+0I mean this with the most respect. To your comment to wake up and elect this man.. WHY? What policy of this man do you support. Please for the love of God, don't elect another politician. This is the same crap that was happening with Bill Clinton. It's going to keep going on over and over unless people start voting on policy. KNOW what your guy stands for. There are people at my work that like Obama but when I ask them why, they flounder and make something up and through the word change in there. I tell ya, it's getting real old and these are the signs of a falling society. THIS IS NOT AMERICAN IDOL PEOPLE! Thank you.
- stevebee, on 02/02/2008, -24/+11What? This empty suit? What has he ever done? In his entire life?
- chriscal, on 02/02/2008, -18/+87This is wonderful. What is so great about Obama is that he is simply inspiring people. No one asked will.i.am to do this. Obama's speech moved him. Vote for change.

They sent us all home , and the entire nation morned and grieved. Barack Obama has a gift that very few people in this world have , the abiltity to heal a Nation and make people feel good about being an AMERICAN. His message is ( WE ARE ONE PEOPLE ) YES WE CAN !

- kingmanic, on 02/03/2008, -0/+1JFK would change the dems not become part of the repubs. The republican part of right now represents a small cloister of people but manages to push concerns for single issues to gain power. No one int heir right mind agrees with the neo cons in power right now but they did a great job at convincing you they believe in repub standards such as small government, fiscal responsibility, and a strong America. Each of these three have gone out the window in the last 7 years. JFK would not be a republican if he was around now. He's be the sniper on a grassy knoll aiming for the idiot you all elected.
- chocolatetacos, on 02/02/2008, -4/+24Barack Obama would be run out of the Democratic Party of the 50s. Your point? Times change.

Hope? Bringing people together? You people are sooo easy to seduce. - wendelgee2, on 02/02/2008, -2/+8Hey Steve. Quit being so damn lazy. If you want to know what he's done, look it up, take responsibility for your own learning. What would convince you? A CV? A long list of state and federal legislation? A note from his 3rd grade teacher? What has Ron Paul done, besides being the lone dissenting vote over and over? What has Hillary done? What have any of the candidates done? If you give me one list of profound accomplishments from any candidate, then you'll have a leg to stand on, otherwise, you're obviously just being a jerk.
- stevebee, on 02/03/2008, -1/+1OK. I will tell you what he's done. He was a neighborhood organizer-activist in Chicago for a while. That means he encouraged non-producing people to demand stuff from those who do produce. How successful he was at that I don't know. To me, the less sucessful he was the better.
Then he was a state senator. I've not read that he was instrumental in anything important. Then he was a US Senator. And I've not read that he was the mover behind anything important. And certainly nothing that I would agree with.
He has never RUN anything as tricky even as an ice cream stand. Never made a paycheck that wasn't from the government.
His chosen church lauds Louie Farrakhan to the skies. And among his staff are Nation of Islam apparatchniks. And career terrorist-justifiers.
But maybe you think all these are good things.

- fluxion, on 02/02/2008, -3/+1it's a good video, 100% because of Obama's speech. Scarlett Johanson and Common aren't gonna impress the people that are actually gonna be at the voting booths when it counts.
- StarlessKnight, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1While it's true a video, alone, means little to a voter, a song makes remembering the message easier. The one song that just won't leave your mind? Repeating over, and over again? Or the recollection of a heart felt moment in listening to the story of the song? Music may well encourage a person to investigate further about what Obama stands for; or, on the less desirable end of the scale (as a song, alone, should not be enough to carry the weight of an entire person--Obama is more than just one speech), it may carry itself into the voting booth and sway one person's vote.

- 10GunSalute, on 02/03/2008, -2/+4Some people admire a candidate based on their political views, not on how well they can give speeches. Barack is all right but how much do you really think he is going to do to change America?
- echolyean, on 02/03/2008, -2/+2That misses the point completely. It's not about what he is going to do so much as it's about what he'll inspire others to do. I have a sense of motivation and belief in what my country can become when I hear him speak. Rhetoric or not... if it's enough to get the American people passionate again after 8 years of what we've had to go through, that's good enough for me. I can't even stand to hear Hillary speak, let alone sense any sort of motivation of what might be possible if she were elected.

If your political opponents in Congress took a bill you sponsored to fund college tuition programs and called it something like "The I Hate Children Act" what would you do? - tehxen3, on 02/02/2008, -4/+2Last 7 years economy has been constantly adding jobs, unemployment is about 5% or less.
Way less than any other developed country. Economic growth has been constant.
And we spend only 5-6% of economy on Defense, including emergency war bills.
Do you know how much do other social programs that foster dependence on government and inefficient bureaucracy that can be replaced by efficient and inexpensive market forces cost a year? About 20% of economy or more. They are sponsored mainly by democrats.
That's 2.2 TRILLION in one year. Defense spending including wars per year is about 0.6 trillion.
Bush has mismanaged the war but that's nothing compared to damage a democrat president would do to this economy.

- wevegotthejazz, on 02/02/2008, -3/+2Actually, Obama's fiscal platform would give the vast majority Americans substantial tax cuts, something the republican presidential canidates aren't talking about doing at all.
with huge corporate subsidies and minimal capital gains taxes the richest men in the world are taxed at a much lower percentage than you and me. Although corporate subsidies really did flourish under the Clinton, the republican congress under the Bush administration pushed this to new extremes and has shifted into a dangerously aggressive reverse socialism that greatly benefits the rich and steals from the poor.
I honestly doubt most "conservatives" who voted for Bush or any front running presidential candidates besides Paul really understand the fraudulent illusion of fiscal conservatism that has been sold to them.- tehxen3, on 02/02/2008, -3/+2What corporate subsidies? - kermit4karate, on 02/02/2008, -2/+5Wait a minute...? Ruin the economy and tax the hell out of us? What do you think the current administration has been doing??? They've trashed the economy, increasing the national debt by $4 trillion dollars, and their complete irresponsibility has led to higher costs in America. If you're paying twice as much for healthcare today as you were just 7 years ago, almost twice as much for gas, more to send your kids to college, and you're on the hook for more interest on the growing national debt, I hate to break it to you, but those ARE in effect higher taxes.
- tehxen3, on 02/02/2008, -2/+1Debt is high because democrats push useless social programs which foster dependence on government and ruin peoples lives.
Regardless, tax cuts foster economic growth which will erase govt. deficits by 2010 or so. US has higher economic growth than any other left-leaning developed country.
Gas is high because China and India is increasing oil demand, it has nothing to do with US, well, it's probably that high because retarded democrats don't allow Alaska oil drilling.
Healthcare is semi-socialized, distorted by intrusive government activity and therefore not a true competitive market. Get a clue.

And I'll never actually make a good case against the gold standard, but I'll just say it since it sounds nutty.
- nihilite, on 02/02/2008, -5/+9If Ron Paul was such a great leader he would understand how to appeal to more than just a fringe of the population. Even Ross Perot, another *****-crazy texan who shared a very similar approach of the strident outsider, was able to garner 30%+.
- fmaxwell, on 02/02/2008, -4/+2Ron Paul is evil and would destroy this nation if put into office. He has that idiotic "free market capitalism solves everything" ***** plastered all over his web page.
Well guess what: All that free market capitalism guarantees is efficiency. Not equity. Not fairness. Not good schools. Not nutrition for the poor. Not affordable health insurance. Not job stability. Not good wages (in fact, it tends to suppress wages of the working class, explaining why the gap between the richest and poorest ballooned under anti-regulation, low-tax, pro-capitalism Presidents like Reagan and G.W. Bush.- Akronos, on 02/03/2008, -1/+1Actually a lot of this wealth gap discrepancy is being caused by inflation. And Bush is only "low taxes" for the rich, not "low taxes" for everyone. And the fact that you are comparing Bush and Reagan to Paul just shows you have no idea what you're talking about. Just because it says Paul is a republican doesn't mean he is the same as those two guys. You need to do much more research or else you're just doing the rest of the country a disservice by voting with such a lack of knowledge.
- fmaxwell, on 02/03/2008, -1/+1If you had 1/10th of my knowledge, you'd be a much more informed voter than you are now.
The wealth gap was not caused by inflation in any way, shape, or form and I challenge you to provide math and statistics to justify that claim. Wages of the top percentile soared at a rate many times that of inflation while those of the workers remained relatively stagnant. Just look at minimum wage, which both Reagan and Bush fought hard to prevent from rising, arguing that government should not interfere with the economy (sound familiar?).
As to the taxes, perhaps you've forgotten about the idiotic checks sent out to almost every taxpayer under Bush. Yes, he wants the rich to pay lower taxes, but his belief is that they pay the most already so they should get the biggest cuts.
You and Mr. Paul also seem to have the fairy tale view that taxes are just money sucked out of the economy. In reality, the government buys things with taxes, both goods and services. And, unlike Joe Consumer, the U.S. government isn't going to blow the money at Walmart on goods made in China. They will, much more often, buy American goods and services. They also pay wages to U.S. workers who spend their money, putting it back into the economy. Reduce taxes to a minimum and you put people out of work, both government workers as well as people working for companies that supply goods and services to the U.S. government.
Ron Paul's knowledge of economics is practically non-existent. Or he's yet another liar from Washington out to help the wealthy get even wealthier at the expense of the working class.

- SLP1111, on 02/02/2008, -28/+21Id much rather have Dr. Paul as the next president of the United States of America, but it just isn't realistic- he will never get the mainstream media attention the other candidates receive and even if he does it is too late now. Although Obama is calling for change he still supports such things as the Patriot Acts and the war in Iraq, Ron Paul is calling for a widespread reform and the dismantling of this militarial industrial complex that has been built up.
I hope one day that this nation as a whole will endorse someone as solid as Ron Paul, but I know that this is not going to be the time that it happens, as much as I would want it to be. As for my fellow Ron Paul supporters who are planning to pencil his name in on election day- I would encourage that you vote for someone such as Obama, as he stands a chance to make it to the oval office. As someone from Massachusetts the last thing I want is Mitt Romney as our president.- wendelgee2, on 02/02/2008, -2/+10You should read up on his stance on the Patriot Act. She felt terrible on November 22nd '63.- doronster195, on 02/03/2008, -5/+1Sounds like Ron Paul right now to me... everyone thinks he's crazy and would screw the country over... but in fact, he would turn this country back to the way it was supposed to be and allow everyone to live their lives again.

- doyoulikeworms, on 02/02/2008, -25/+4So this is what this is about? All you stupid kids jerk off over Obama and it's just.. an extension of your angst-ridden adolescence?
- ventralnet, on 02/02/2008, -19/+8kinda gave me some douche chills..

- patrickloggins, on 02/02/2008, -21/+11As much as I admire Obama, I found this ad overall well done, but.. I dunno, it's just kinda showy. They really are just singing his speech, it's kind of a cop-out. They repeat things far too much. It's putting way too much false emotion into it and after reading comments like "How could anyone not vote for him" I see that it's worked.
- pSilociN, on 02/02/2008, -4/+1I don't know why your getting buried. You make an excellent point. =/
- BKLMabry, on 02/02/2008, -1/+3If you think it's a bit showy, or overdone, those comments are best directed to Will.I.Am. Because of his popularity, fans of Obama are going to take his message and apply it and promote others to respond to it in whatever ways they can. Personally, I like Obama not so much for how inspirational he is (and I don't knock anyone who is inspired by him, I think that's awesome) but Obama is smart, sincere, and the most straightfoward politician I've ever heard. But yeah, this video was not an "ad" but just some independent thing.
- MalDON, on 02/02/2008, -1/+3What? People recite the mlk speech all the time. Does that make him bad? Just people the people like it? It's not Obama's fault he's popular.
