Unlike McCain, Many Seniors Depend On The Web
news.wired.com — If Sen. John McCain is really serious about becoming a Web-savvy citizen, perhaps Kathryn Robinson can help.Robinson is now 106 - that's 35 years older than McCain and she began using the Internet at 98,

- nmessick, on 07/21/2008, -13/+0wow... someone has never really looked into this before. Even the lefty news outlets have commended McCain for beging more tech savy than most people in polotics.
- Cuchanu, on 07/21/2008, -0/+7I have never seen anyone commend McCain for being tech savvy. You are probably talking about his campaign, and I'm pretty sure McCain is not in charge of that aspect otherwise they'd be using the telegraph not the internet.
I mean he has admitted to not being able to use email without the help of his wife. Anyone that would commend that is crazy.

- SheilaNoya, on 07/21/2008, -4/+36I'd like to see these numbers broken down a bit more.
It says only 73% of Americans are using the Internet. That leaves 27% who don't, which is roughly equivalent to Bush's approval rating.
Hmmm....- paradexes, on 07/22/2008, -1/+3Wow! That was a very interesting correlation and makes a hell of alot of sense.
- QuadZeroRoute, on 07/22/2008, -2/+1Don't expect miracles from Annoya.

- knumbknuts, on 07/21/2008, -4/+13How good is he at Parcheesi? That's roughly as relevant.
- poprocksandsoda, on 07/21/2008, -2/+3Finally someone thinking logically.
- cdigioia, on 07/22/2008, -1/+2Disagree completely - The internet is an insanely good source of information/useful. For someone for whom the cost is absoltuely no concern - to not learn it by now - implies a lack of interest in information/learning.
That's not a good trait to have as president...& kinda sounds like Bush.- QuadZeroRoute, on 07/22/2008, -1/+3Warren Buffet does not use a computer or a cell phone. Didn't seem to slow him down much.
- oldgal, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1An understanding of the internet is the major reason Obama has been able to raise so much money and McCain has not. Hopefully McCain will not be making policy that impacts parcheesi. A world view that encompasses current technology can only be helpful if not mandatory.
- knumbknuts, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1@ oldgal, we're talking about the candidate himself here. Stay on target.
I have been getting emails from the McCain campaign for 8 years. Same address (one I don't really use much anymore).
- itzdiceman, on 07/21/2008, -3/+4The President should not be writing emails. He has people who are much faster at it to do that for him.
- Evilena, on 07/22/2008, -2/+4What if his email contains national security matters? Is his daughter going to email the generals in Iraq?
- itzdiceman, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1If the email contains national security matters, it will be encrypted using technology even you wouldn't understand.
My point is that the President shouldn't be sitting there typing away at the computer. He dictates to a professional. - Evilena, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2I know enough about cryptography to the call the professional an analog hole. Don't presume to know what I would understand.
- itzdiceman, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1If the email contains national security matters, it will be encrypted using technology even you wouldn't understand.

America needs to rebuild it's former lead in technology. McCain doesn't have a clue which direction we need to go in or what needs to be done. He doesn't even recognize the value of some of our most important technology.
McCain's supporters claim it doesn't matter because he has "advisors". However, when you look at McCain's "advisors", you see that they are the same bunch of incompetent old farts who worked for Bush and even Bush's father.
The internet has made the biggest technological change in America during the last 50 years, yet McCain isn't even curious enough to try it and see what it's all about? That's both scary and pathetic.- Evilena, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2He doesn't need to try it out. McCain relies on experts like Ted Stevens to explain the internet for him.

- umbriago, on 07/21/2008, -4/+10It's ok that 27% of Americans don't use the Internet. Fine. But A MAN WHO WANTS TO BE PRESIDENT should be using it for Christ's sake. It just shows a closed mind that's not interested in expanding horizons anymore.
- OffPiste, on 07/21/2008, -5/+8Clinton was notorious for not using a computer or the internet. But he was a Democrat so he automatically gets a pass.
- rationalbeats, on 07/22/2008, -0/+6You were using the Internet in 1992?
I had Prodigy, but that was not the Internet, pal. - waterdrop, on 07/22/2008, -0/+32008 is very different then 1992 to 1999. Internet usage has went through the roof since the early 2000s.
- Rsulliv1, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1All of your posts either ignore common sense or common decency.

- CobaltBlue, on 07/22/2008, -3/+6Clinton sent an email to the space shuttle. I think that makes him better at the internet than you, OffPiste.
- OffPiste, on 07/22/2008, -2/+1Right sure he did. Why are libtards so gullible and filled with hate?
- Rsulliv1, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1What a ridiculous comment OffPiste. "libtard"? All of your posts either ignore common sense or common decency.

- obsolite, on 07/22/2008, -12/+1Of course old people need the internet. How else will they break their computers?
***** YOU GRANDMA.- CobaltBlue, on 07/22/2008, -1/+2My grandma was using the internet when you were in diapers. She could gopher and telnet with the best of them and was a legend in the MUDs.

- yovia, on 07/22/2008, -6/+3McCain has a slight lead in this internet poll
http://www.2008presidentialpoll.com- soccerman90, on 07/22/2008, -1/+1i dont think thats a scientific poll. this is, http://www.gallup.com/
- stucktildekey, on 07/22/2008, -1/+0Yes, but few run for President... let alone have the executive order to control it.
- paradexes, on 07/22/2008, -1/+9McCain got owned by 106 yr old Grandma. He has all the money in the world for a computer (and lessons) and still does not do it. How can he have ANY kind of technology policy if he does not know anything about the Internet besides what his advisers (who could be bought and paid for by corporate interests too)?
It's important not just to "be aware of the Internet" but to understand how it affects the lives of people globally. Not expecting him to hunker down and start coding, just go and do a few things like check out his myspace site or something. Understand what the hoopla is about by truly using it. - Evilena, on 07/22/2008, -3/+2I wondered why the AARP had a website
- tykwondingo, on 07/22/2008, -0/+9The fact that he can't use a computer/internet doesn't bother me so much as the fact that out of the 27% of people in the US that don't use the internet, I'd be willing to bet 90% are voting for him.
- Plower, on 07/22/2008, -1/+1so 90% of 27% of American's are voting for McCain...and that's something to be afraid off. Last I knew 24.3% of the popular vote didn't win elections.
--------------------------------------
(someone insert stupid comment about the republican's rigging the elections...blah blah blah)- tykwondingo, on 07/22/2008, -0/+4You assume I meant that the 24.3% would be the only people voting for him? You'd be wrong in making that assumption but fair enough...
I was commenting on the fact that more of the people that are closed off and MSM fed are going to vote for him than those with the internet. Do you understand now that I've written it out for you? - Plower, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Yea, but we know all the sensible people with the Internets won't vote for such a man. Do you understand what I'm saying to you?
- tykwondingo, on 07/22/2008, -0/+4You assume I meant that the 24.3% would be the only people voting for him? You'd be wrong in making that assumption but fair enough...

- Zman0101, on 07/22/2008, -5/+4I'm not voting for a candidate who doesn't know how to use the internet. its one of my requirements
- milkmage, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3FTA:
"He's fully capable of browsing the Internet and checking Web sites,"
how is "browsing" different from "checking"? - miamidolfan13, on 07/22/2008, -0/+0If McCain makes it to the web he should try the Traveler IQ Challenge
http://www.bluetidalwave.com/2008/07/challenge-joh ... - stinkypyper, on 07/22/2008, -0/+8When I was in college I worked for an electrician, there was this old dude who was a licensed electrician who would come in part-time once in a while to help on big jobs. He was 75 and loved computers, thought they were the greatest things ever. He said he would email everyone in his family, have video chats with his grandkids, did his taxes, online banking, typed letters, cookie recipes for his wife, etc.... He had only been using one for a few months and had already everything out and said every old person should get one because of how easy they are to use. Remember folks, type writers leave very little margin for error. If you can operate that then you can use a computer.
- 223Sniper, on 07/22/2008, -2/+5***** that mother ***** mccain.
- diggdiggerid, on 07/22/2008, -0/+7I hope when I get to be his age I don't stop learning how to do new things and use the new technologies. Saying "when I was your age we didn't have computers" isn't an excuse--it was people his age that MADE computers.
- Sherman901, on 07/22/2008, -1/+2wow. we are comparing mccain to some random ass old lady now? what the *****?
- JulyZerg, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2What's really pathetic is that he loses to random ass old ladies...
- rz8472, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3If by "Internet" you mean the comfortable inner netting on your swim trunks, I can assure you that John McCain is fully aware of its applications.
- Zdax, on 07/22/2008, -2/+2Oh look, more McCain bashing. What a surprise.
- tomarocco, on 07/22/2008, -0/+6Apparently his "awareness of the Internet" is right on par with his "awareness of how to not get shot down, captured and imprisoned by the enemy".
- crackberri, on 07/22/2008, -3/+0Sorry Hitler lovers, different strokes for different folks. Buried as spam…..
- sonofashoe, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3Too many good posts for me to add any substance. But like tomarocco just pointed out, he and his staff don't even seem aware!
"I'm an illiterate who has to rely on his wife for any assistance he can get." And the 71-year-old presumptive Republican nominee, asked about his Web use last week by the New York Times, said that aides "go on for me. I will have that down fairly soon, getting on myself." - FishHammer, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Are you serious? The McCain bashing on digg is getting as bad as the Ron Paul whoring. Yeah I'm sure there's a 100 year old that can do double backflips on a dirtbike too, and I bet John McCain can't do that! Plenty of older people aren't using the internet religiously. This is absurd.
- Mightbiteyou, on 07/22/2008, -0/+0Well I wouldn't think many 80 year olds would be that interested in porn so why would he be on the internet?
- Andrwmorph, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1We should stop considering candidates that constantly look like they are going to kick the bucket. 8 years of Cheney jokes has killed it for me.
