PA Primary Will Be Unauditable; GOP Blocks E-Voting Reform
arstechnica.com — On the eve of tomorrow's hotly contested and relatively close Democratic presidential primary in Pennsylvania, a number of voting activists are sounding the alarm one last time about the state's election systems. Over 85 percent of PA voters will vote on paperless touchscreen machines that are hackable, failure-prone, and fundamentally unauditable.

- moolaismyfriend, on 04/22/2008, -7/+25Oregon has all vote by mail and it has been proven to be the most reliable yet no other state will take it up.
Why?
Cause white trash ignorant republicans fear an easier way for people to vote. That's why we vote on a work day and not a holiday. Cause when more people vote, Republicans lose.- stavrogin2, on 04/22/2008, -5/+15I agree with your points, but the phrase "white trash" is just as bad as the n-word in displaying bigotry. It really doesn't help anyone -- white or black.
- jgtg32a, on 04/22/2008, -10/+4That and the "white trash" usually vote democrat.
- stavrogin2, on 04/22/2008, -0/+4I think you're missing the point.
- TheGuruStud, on 04/22/2008, -0/+4No they don't, I'm surrounded by them. (I live in the midwest)
- jgtg32a, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1you sure about that I'm seeing an awful lot of poster in Indiana for Obama.
- jgtg32a, on 04/22/2008, -10/+4That and the "white trash" usually vote democrat.
- casek, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2well, not all republicans agree with what the assholes in washington do.
it's both sides, really. dems didn't do anything about it the last couple of go-rounds, either. - rexblade, on 04/22/2008, -3/+5I guess you did't hear about Ron Paul then? Hes still the only genuine peace candidate left. The left and right soap opera is just another part of the scam, we the people need to wake up to this. Then next time when the opportunity for REAL change is presented your mind might just be receptive to hearing it. And not stuck in this ***** "us" and "them" facade which continues to serve the status quo quite effectively.
- hittnrun, on 04/22/2008, -5/+1its soo funny, if the mean republicans didn't want to use the modern technology of touch screen voting, you would be whining about how backjwards they are and how the ballot boxes can be stuffed with bogus paper ballots to influence the elections.
Just realize, the only people who would hack a voting machine are little digg liberals who think they are smarter than anyone else.
- stavrogin2, on 04/22/2008, -5/+15I agree with your points, but the phrase "white trash" is just as bad as the n-word in displaying bigotry. It really doesn't help anyone -- white or black.

"The GOP is right on this one.Voting machines are chosen by the LOCAL election committees. Let them fix their own poor choices with their own money."
PA state legislature has given 3 billion dollars to local election authorities for their voting needs . It was local authorities who came up this ridiculous voting system not GOP in the PA. - bysin, on 04/22/2008, -2/+6You know, its primarily our demographic that can hack these machines. They're just giving us more influence over the election.
- superkendall, on 04/22/2008, -4/+1Dude - these are the DEMOCRATIC primaries. Influence over what exactly? It's all DEMOCRATS VOTING.
- bysin, on 04/23/2008, -0/+1I think you read my comment wrong.

- Tinu, on 04/22/2008, -1/+43That's just plain out of hand. Who wants to bet me five dollars that the first thing someone will say when the inevitable Does happen is something about how there wasn't enough warning. Blah.
- whereiseljefe, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1But how were we supposed to know about this flaw!?
- LukasSmith, on 04/22/2008, -6/+1This must be the stupidest digg article Ive seen in a long while. I mean A. wtf is arsetechnica? B. the voting system is probably just fine but some bozo conspiracy theorists wrote this so that whoever wins the other can feel cheated... at least on digg.com. But in any case whoever the majority of Digg.com supports is doomed anyhow politically. Heres looking at you Ron Paul.

If you can manage, read a portion of Bev Harris' site on election fraud that she's been running since the 90's.
Of course, the computerized threats are really quite new and exciting!

- glibpaxman, on 04/22/2008, -3/+32i suppose when you spend your whole life watching politicians ignore your most basic needs you dont much care about how votes are counted. oh, and when courts decide elections instead of votes it certainly makes me want to just say screw it and stay home. good work republicans, way to take apathy to a whole new level!
- h4ckler, on 04/22/2008, -2/+12You fail @ American if you stay home.

- pagno, on 04/22/2008, -3/+65This is absolutely ridiculous. How much IS too much to ensure OUR elections are legit? With many people already suspicious of past elections, doesnt this just kind of provide proof to their argument? And nobody says a word. Stupid ***** Americans.

- KraftDinner101, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2You've had 8 years to ensure a legit election process since you've had to of known that Bush rigged the one that got him in. What makes you think it's going to be legit this year?
- Dawnrazor, on 04/22/2008, -1/+47And then people wonder why there are so many conspiracy theorists.
- whahaa, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2Fox Mulder knew all along.
- cheezintern, on 04/22/2008, -3/+3No conspiracy here, she's definitely a neo-con special agent, who was placed undercover many, many years ago, and is now being utilized to subvert an election where the obvious republican candidate will likely loose to the democratic opposition. It all makes perfect sense.
- evilcaptain, on 04/22/2008, -0/+9I hope nobody just smashes all the machines ;)
They are touch screens after all. I'm sure even a biro could render them unusable. - N3tw0rk, on 04/22/2008, -2/+72Looks like Hillary will get the 'Diebold Bump', courtesy of the GOP.
- light65733, on 04/22/2008, -2/+54Peasants revolt, brainwashed citizens don't. We believed them in Florida in 2000. We believed them in Ohio in 2004, And we believed them in New Hampshire this year. If we continue to believe in these sham elections, we will get and deserve to get more of the same. The first thing we have to change, if we want change, is our blind acceptance of these rigged black box elections.
- Pherdnut, on 04/22/2008, -1/+5Ethical people are skeptics of other people being that amoral. We'll wait and see but if Hillary gets a landslide tomorrow and there are reports of graft all over the place, we need to step up to the plate this time.
- Chandon, on 04/22/2008, -1/+5Landslides are for incompetent fraudsters. Competent fraudsters rig for a believable result that won't get investigated. In this case, if I were trying to sabotage Obama in the November election, I'd shoot for 54% Clinton / 46% Obama - just enough that Clinton has an excuse to stay in the race and keep running attack ads.
- DRINKxREDxBULL, on 04/22/2008, -6/+7So why did you suddenly belive them in 2006? Was it because you got the result you wanted?
- Railz, on 04/22/2008, -1/+7Because, unfortunately, there is no real voter turn out for the house/sen seats.
- InfiniteNothing, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2I don't remember 2006 being suspicious. No disappearing votes as far as I remember.
- BTime, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2Excepting Ohio of course =P

- DiggDuggDone, on 04/22/2008, -1/+8On way to avoid using hackable touch screens is to file as an Absent Voter. In California that's all you have to do to receive your election ballot in the mail. You don't have to prove you're over seas, on vacation or what not.
I think it's a bit too late for the people of PA but get the word out in your state and with your peeps about filing Absent. I love getting my ballot a month before the election!
I do admit this isn't 100%, but something is better than nothing. The only time I take mine to my polling place is for the Presidential election, because you get a spiffy "I Voted!" sticker.- muckemuck, on 04/22/2008, -0/+10You do know that weeks after the California primary there were still over a million paper ballots uncounted? Did yours ever get counted?
- MindyB, on 04/22/2008, -3/+5Great! Given Gov. Rendell's undying support for Clinton I would not be surprised if he somehow "helped" some machines "malfunction" to benefit Clinton.!
- x0rcist, on 04/22/2008, -0/+3Hey, lets tell the hackers exactly what models are going to be in use so they don't bring the wrong floppy disk!
- DRINKxREDxBULL, on 04/22/2008, -14/+6So does that mean that we support measures to prevent voter disenfranchisement, like photo ID requirements, more scrutiny over absentee ballots, and greater overwatch of groups like ACORN that use tax-payer money to campaign for Democrats?
Probably not.- moolaismyfriend, on 04/22/2008, -7/+8what?
You are a nut job white trash knuckle dragger. Buried.- minox, on 04/22/2008, -5/+4mool, you offered a non-argument as a response. The point is valid. There are all these conspiracies about touch screen voting, but no concern over whether people are voting legally or not.
- petrodollar, on 04/22/2008, -2/+8There's no evidence of widespread voter fraud.
There is at least circumstantial evidence of touchscreen voting machine fraud
HTH - minox, on 04/22/2008, -6/+4"So, less than a week before the midterm elections, four workers from Acorn, the liberal activist group that has registered millions of voters, have been indicted by a federal grand jury for submitting false voter registration forms to the Kansas City, Missouri, election board. But hey, who needs voter ID laws?
We wish this were an aberration, but allegations of fraud have tainted Acorn voter drives across the country. Acorn workers have been convicted in Wisconsin and Colorado, and investigations are still under way in Ohio, Tennessee and Pennsylvania."
http://www.opinionjournal.com/editorial/feature.ht ...
petro, are you getting your information from the Institute for Data-free Analysis?- petrodollar, on 04/22/2008, -1/+4You forgot to mention that ACORN itself turned in most of the individuals involved.
- fonebone2, on 04/22/2008, -1/+4http://www.thenation.com/blogs/edcut?pid=172201
The Bush administration investigated the ***** out of these guys for years and only came up with a handful of convictions. ACORN also successfully sued them for libel because of the false accusations brought against the organization.
- RoboRay, on 04/22/2008, -6/+2"There's no evidence of widespread voter fraud. "
How could there be, when liberals freak out whenever anyone tries to investigate this?- petrodollar, on 04/22/2008, -1/+4Huh? Bush's DoJ has had a free reign for going on eight years!
- petrodollar, on 04/22/2008, -2/+8There's no evidence of widespread voter fraud.

- Chandon, on 04/22/2008, -1/+3I'm not sure how photo ID requirements prevent voter *disenfranchisement*. Nor do I understand how any conservative would promote any sort of mandatory ID requirement - "papers please" was always a commie thing.
- kreneskyp, on 04/22/2008, -1/+2because minorities tend to vote democrat. minorities are afraid of the man. checking IDs causes minorities to avoid voting.
the idea is if you can't control who they vote for, control who goes to the polls.

- neocognitism, on 04/22/2008, -6/+3Suspicious? Of course not! I mean, Republicans are 100% against anything remotely critical of DREs 100% of the time, even though there's no good reason, but that's not a reason to be suspicious!
- moolaismyfriend, on 04/22/2008, -8/+5Why does the GOP hate our troops?
- InspectorGadget, on 04/22/2008, -0/+15What was wrong with physical ballots? Cheap and accurate and as long as we have all these stupid bureaucrats on the payroll we may as well put them to work.
- Chandon, on 04/22/2008, -0/+5You got it on the first guess. The thing that's wrong with paper ballots is that they're cheap - so no contractor can make millions supplying them.
- megaton, on 04/22/2008, -3/+8If Obama wins, will we be crying foul...? ;)
- jaxcs, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2How could we tell?
- ConAmoreEFuoco, on 04/22/2008, -2/+5Eventually, after enough elections turn out suspiciously, the people will start to grumble. Perhaps not the 30-something couples with children. Not the old people nearing retirement. It will be the 20 year-olds. The young who were brought up thinking that America was free and democratic. And when they see, with certainty, that it is not, they will rise in disgust. The young, largely free of commitments, are the ones who acted as the country's conscience during the war in Vietnam, and they will have to rise again to demonstrate against the sham of democracy.
- enantiodromia, on 04/22/2008, -3/+5actually, the young are too stoned and believe they are "sort of a big deal" enough at this point that they don't care what happens in the rest of the world. as long as their myspace pages and facebook profiles are getting hits every day, they couldnt care less what happens in the real world.
- BevansDesign, on 04/22/2008, -0/+6Can't. Guitar Hero. You understand.
- Forgorin, on 04/22/2008, -0/+0Most young are too blissed out on "school". Let us hope there are enough who can think for themselves.
- sweetholymosiah, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1Virtual Free Speech 2008! It really seems like you matter!
- terajoule, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2Wrong. They'll just blog about it.
- Hillsfar, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1Back in the 60s and the 70s, college students were easily supported by their parents. Even the ones who were poor were able to spend just the summer working and be able to pay for college tuition, room, and board for the rest of the year. They had health care through their colleges.
Today, college students saddle themselves with student loans that only cover maybe half of their costs. Many work hard just to get by month by month. Who dares risks getting arrested or getting convicted of something?
- FaithclubDotNet, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1I've been planning to vote a write in: "protestevote". I know it won't do anything, I just hate being confronted by people,"Who'dja vote for? Cuz I voted for the right person. I hope you agree with me or I'll dislike you." or "Did you vote? What no? You should be ashamed of yourself." I can now answer them both without losing ground socially.
- whahaa, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1if it's obama vs mccain, i'll vote obama.
if it's hillary vs mccain, if i even feel like putting pants on and getting out of the house, i'll vote nader.
and if i don't end up voting, because i don't feel like putting on pants, and someone asks in a setting where i might lose ground socially depending on my answer, i'll just lie.
- whahaa, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1if it's obama vs mccain, i'll vote obama.
- RedPhalanx, on 04/22/2008, -7/+5Wait, why is it the GOP's fault the Democratic Party won't use paper ballots?
- MistySteele, on 04/22/2008, -0/+13RTFA
- RedPhalanx, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2Primary elections, at least in Texas, are funded by local parties. They have the choice to use/not to use paper ballots or not. Apparently, only 15% of Pennsylvania wants accountability.
- kreneskyp, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2the voting machines and the votes are run by the state unless its a caucus/convention

- whahaa, on 04/22/2008, -1/+1hillary may be Rocky, but obama is Rocky IV.
- Schmapdi, on 04/22/2008, -0/+6YAY - at least we know regardless of the result that our next president could quite possibly be a sham.
*sigh* - poopdigger, on 04/22/2008, -6/+17I guarantee that one of two scenarios will play out on digg.
1) Slimy Hillary cheated to gain an advantage.
2) Slimy Hillary whines that Barack "cheated"- 11b1p, on 04/22/2008, -0/+3Digg whines because Hillary hasn't quit yet

- TheMadCow, on 04/22/2008, -1/+1How many 20-something slackers actually HAVE a firearm? And we're not counting the ones in Halo on Xbox. You Fail.
- muckemuck, on 04/22/2008, -0/+15HBO documentary "Hacking Democracy" http://tinyurl.com/4wdfjd (I promise it's not a rick roll...)
Watch the last 10 minutes or so.. they do a mock election to show that the machine can be hacked by swapping the memory card. They don't hack a touch screen machine, but if you watch the rest of it you'll see that a lot of the same issues apply. Also look into the shoddy way the "paper trail" was treated in New Hampshire, where boxes were "sealed" with what were essentially posti-it note labels and many of the boxes had openings big enough to stuff ballots in. -- having a paper trail isn't enough, it has to have a secure chain of custody. Without that a recount is a waste of time. - Neticule, on 04/22/2008, -0/+15I can not believe that these electronic systems are still in place! They should have been done away with years ago. Seriously! They can F'n be HACKED for god sakes! And you can even find out how to do it on youtube! The people that voted to keep these machines should be fired.
- rexblade, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2Well they still are voting for U.S. Government puppet A or U.S. Government puppet B.
- petrodollar, on 04/22/2008, -1/+10Thanks to Bush and right wingers who tongue his ass, Afghanistan and Iraw now have more robust, foolproof elections than the USA

- johnnyb3, on 04/22/2008, -4/+1As a student that waited for 2.5 hours to vote in the 2004 election, I for one look forward to casting my vote for Obama without having to deal with inane paper-based procedures.
- pintomp3, on 04/22/2008, -0/+4but wouldn't you like to know that your vote is counted properly?
- user5124, on 04/22/2008, -0/+3You mean his vote for Hillary?
- FireAtWill, on 04/22/2008, -1/+11What the ***** is it going to take for your populace to wake up? Your entire election system is an absolute fraud perpetrated by a social elite, and lately nothing more.
I miss the America I though existed; I guess I was just misinformed. - iheartboobs, on 04/22/2008, -0/+7Spending 10 of millions of dollars on a voting devices without having the ability to audit an election is unbelievably stupid. Words can not describe how stupid it is. All good election officials know that rule #1 for elections is to plan for things that might go wrong. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murphy's_law
- Findeton, on 04/22/2008, -1/+3It's not stupid, but anti-democratic. What is stupid is not doing anything at all to stop it. I mean, if i lived in the USA, ¡i would be protesting on the streets! But i live in europe and we don't even have electronic voting machines... BECAUSE WE DON'T TRUST THEM.
- iheartboobs, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2Most counties or states in the USA don't trust the machines. I don't know the exact number but not many counties moved towards unauditble touchscreens. The problem with the USA is some states allow their counties to make the decision on what voting devices they are going to get. And out of the 100s of counties that have this freedom you are bound to get some dumbass election officials that are going to pick the expensive shiney touchscreen machine over the functional ones. If some european country allowed all the local officials to pick the voting device then you would see a similar issues.
- Hillsfar, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1That's what you get when you don't open up these government contract processes to public comment and public accountability, but instead take the closed bid of the company that gave you the most donations. It's the same reason the Air Force paid $2,000 for toilet seats and $130 for socket wrenches back in the 1980s. And it's why Barack Obama wants to open up as much of government for public scrutiny as possible, and it's why he's worked to get ethics reform passed.
- Futile, on 04/22/2008, -2/+10I'm not suggesting anything here but I would like to point out that, if these machines are really as vulnerable as people claim, it would be REALLY NICE to have Barack Obama win Penn by, say, 25% margin. This would accomplish one of two things:
If the media points out that, something is fishy, there is no way Obama would win by that much, then people would finally clue in on how horrible these machines are.
If nobody seems to care about the ridiculous results, then Hillary would be forced to concede and drop out of the nomination. Yay.
Win-win situation. You know, if SOMEONE actually can exploit these vulnerable machines. I'm not saying they should. That would be illegal. - representDLV, on 04/22/2008, -5/+1I think it's funny how people think that paper ballots are fool proof. If someone has the right motivation they can manipulate paper ballots just as easily. Electronic voting has its weaknesses but so do paper ballots. They can both be tampered with.
- averagejoesgym, on 04/23/2008, -0/+0Ummmm......WRONG. You would have to have ALOT of conspirators and ALOT of organization to mess with the paper ballots, especially in this age of video recording, even on cell phones. One talented computer person with inside ties with the company is all it would take for electronic tampering.
- Ihatenicks, on 04/22/2008, -4/+12You stupid, stupid Americans, what is it going to take for you all to finally realise that you are being conned?... Actually I'm inclined to believe that you know that you are being lied to but are simply just too lazy and apathetic to give a *****.
People are dying everyday all over the world fighting for democracy and you have it and abuse it. You don't deserve a free society, you should all be locked up in pens.- tchynerd, on 04/22/2008, -5/+4And it is that rhetoric that kills democracy... dumbass

democracy is a bad thing. if my neighborhood were a democracy, my neighbors could vote me out because they don't like my haircut.
in a democratic republic, i have inalienable rights and no one can vote me out for how i dress, what i believe, etc. do you understand?
another thing: america has been lulled to sleep. not all of us are dumb cattle being herded to the meat factory. you just have to trust that the people are still good for the most part, it's our government that has taken too much power.- Findeton, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2So, basically, you say that the USA is not just a democracy, but a democratic republic because you have inalienable rights. Well, i live in Spain and we also have those inalienable rights, IT'S CALLED CONSTITUTION. BTW, good luck with your inalienable rights, but there's been american people incarcelated in guantanamo, ¿didn't you know that?
- averagejoesgym, on 04/23/2008, -0/+0Man, don't hate on all of us Americans. Geez....what a prick. I'm on your side in terms of agreeing we are being "conned".
- Codee, on 04/22/2008, -2/+3Damnit! Where's my gun!
- exgop, on 04/23/2008, -0/+1The Democrats confiscated it
- patpl22391, on 04/22/2008, -1/+4I do recall you all wanted a New Hampshire recount after Hillary won there..what happened?
- muckemuck, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2blackboxvoting.org dig around there and you'll find out
- RRJackson, on 04/22/2008, -4/+3Excellent. Clinton landslide.
- kurtwinter, on 04/22/2008, -0/+5Once again, Diebold will determine the winner. Great.
- rexblade, on 04/22/2008, -0/+3Can these slimeballs be anymore obvious? If we cant get a revolution through democracy then I think its getting time to spill the blood of this abomination we call government.
- averagejoesgym, on 04/23/2008, -0/+0I agree with you. The elites have gotten so confident they hardly even try to hide their actions anymore. That's how much they feel they have us by the short hairs.
- superkendall, on 04/22/2008, -2/+1Obvious setup for complaining if Obama doesn't win the primary there. Have to have some finger to point elsewhere.
And I'm way more for Obama than Hillary... I just feel like, he's probably not going to sweep and a lot of people are going to be looking to play the Blame Game if that happens even if the results are real. - CannedMango, on 04/22/2008, -0/+3Anyone tired of the GOP voting against common sense? I mean, how can you argue against being able to verify the vote count?
Why does anyone stand for this? Oh right, because they own the media and it doesn't get reported. - rexblade, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1What if they forgot to switch the hacks from the republican primary and McCain wins again.
- macinit1138, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1Silly lemmings...
- Spoomeister, on 04/22/2008, -0/+2"hackable, failure-prone, and fundamentally unauditable"
I'm guessing a Hillary presidency would be much the same. - lgreengrrl, on 04/22/2008, -1/+1At least there won't be any hanging chads to worry about! ; )
- gluon, on 04/22/2008, -0/+1...
