Obama explains: Why vote for me over Clinton watch!
youtube.com — While in Salem, Oregon, Barack Obama answers a question about why voters should support him over Hillary Clinton. He compliments Clinton but notes that his candidacy will change the way that our country is run. More engagement in foreign policy, more transparency in government spending and decision-making, and more inclusive discussions.

- solisdaniel, on 03/23/2008, -157/+21He also says he doesn't take money from "PACs and lobbyists." Not true, Obama does take money from state lobbyists. Look it up uninformed Barackians!
- benintn, on 03/23/2008, -5/+47well, since he's running for federal office, I'm not sure what the concern would be. However, just for clarity, why don't you supply a link so we can "look it up?"
- cate508, on 03/23/2008, -7/+14I'd be interested in something to back this up, too. Kinda ridiculous to put something like that out there and no details.
- solisdaniel, on 03/23/2008, -34/+5Here is a factcheck of a Democratic debate:
"Nevertheless, Obama accepts money from lobbyists’ spouses and other family members, their partners at the law firms where they work if the partners aren’t registered to lobby, senior executives at companies that hire lobbyists, and state-level lobbyists."
http://www.factcheck.org/elections-2008/democratic ...- jbdobd, on 03/23/2008, -7/+18wow, that kind of parsing is strikingly Clintonian. Surely you can make a better case than that??
- solisdaniel, on 03/23/2008, -25/+8It's not parsing, it's the truth, you've been mislead, deal with it.
- jbdobd, on 03/23/2008, -11/+7hmm. well, if you could make your case, it would help your argument. And its spelled "misled", by the way.
- melek, on 03/23/2008, -4/+41Your right. The statement is not completely accurate. Obama accepts money from lobbyists.
But, as the campaign finance staff identify lobbyists, the money is returned. From the factcheck article (from a year ago) you cited:
"The campaign says it is making a "best effort" to stay away from tainted money. 'It isn’t a perfect solution to the problem and it isn’t even a perfect symbol,' spokesman Burton has said."
Doing a hell of a lot more than others, i tell you that. I believe the Obama would, if it were in his power, take NO money from lobbyists to strengthen his rhetoric, but it simply isn't possible to be perfect in this regard.
Hows cherry picking going by the way? Sparse yield, I know. - thejimmyo, on 03/23/2008, -2/+30"Nevertheless, Obama accepts money from lobbyists’ spouses and other family members, their partners at the law firms where they work if the partners aren’t registered to lobby, senior executives at companies that hire lobbyists, and state-level lobbyists."
1. Lobbyists' spouses are not lobbyists.
2. These law firms' partners are not themselves lobbyists. They don't represent the same interests and don't present a conflict of interest. The only way to present an actual conflict of interests here is for the actual lobbyist to ask his co-worker to donate money to a political campaign on his behalf (which is illegal) and then alert the candidate in question of this illegal transaction, asking or implying that he should get a favor in return. This, of course, is slightly ridiculous.
3. "Senior executives at companies that hire lobbyists" are not lobbyists.
4. "State-level lobbyists" are indeed "lobbyists," but you miss an important point: Obama is running for FEDERAL office, and thus this presents no conflict of interest. STATE level lobbyists are charged with the task of asking STATE level governments (not FEDERAL) for money and favors. There is a big difference here. - Shirt, on 03/23/2008, -2/+5@misstatum: Well then it can be read that you're accepting that Hillary WILL shoot us in the face. Stab in the back implies a possibility. Basically what I got from your statement is that you understand Hillary is a horrible person and you'd still vote for her because Obama MIGHT be a horrible person. What I'm getting at is that you're an idiot. I don't even know how that statement applies here. Sounds like you heard some emo kid in the lunch line say it and thought it sounded wise.
- lgm1213, on 03/23/2008, -2/+2guys, thats nice to say that lobbyist wives and Sig. Others are not lobbyist, but you have to ask, why would obama accept money from them. Because I know if i were a lobbyist, and my GF or Wife gave a candidate money, it would not be out of the blue. Its all sneaky tactics and its really unfair to Clinton to get this one sided judgment. Fair is fair. and receiving money from wives is just sheep in wolves clothing. We need to be critical and rational people here to save the country. This is not a Pro-Clinton , Anti Obama/McCain post. Its saying we need to stop and REALLY think before we make our next moves. We can't be thinking with our hearts right now, we can't afford it. we did it for 8 years and look where we are. In Iraq, loosing Jobs, etc. Lets be intelligent, rational, and critical people now.
- thejimmyo, on 03/24/2008, -1/+1"receiving money from wives is just sheep in wolves clothing"
I think you've got that metaphor backwards. Also, if you think that receiving money from the spouses of lobbyists is such a problem, then isn't it FAR more of a problem that McCain and Clinton accept money from federal lobbyists THEMSELVES? As you say, "Lets be intelligent, rational, and critical people now." - lgm1213, on 03/24/2008, -0/+2yes, but they aren't claiming a stance against it, where you stand on a issue and where are intertangible. he can't be saying i want to get rid of lobbyist and special interest when he is accepting money from them through their wives. that just sneaky and hypocritical

8. Senator Barack Obama (D-IL): A “Dishonorable Mention” last year, Senator Obama moves onto the “ten most wanted” list in 2007. In 2006, it was discovered that Obama was involved in a suspicious real estate deal with an indicted political fundraiser, Antoin “Tony” Rezko. In 2007, more reports surfaced of deeper and suspicious business and political connections It was reported that just two months after he joined the Senate, Obama purchased $50,000 worth of stock in speculative companies whose major investors were his biggest campaign contributors. One of the companies was a biotech concern that benefited from legislation Obama pushed just two weeks after the senator purchased $5,000 of the company’s shares. Obama was also nabbed conducting campaign business in his Senate office, a violation of federal law. - FutureGuy, on 03/24/2008, -1/+1First your link goes nowhere. And you point about buying stocks if there is even a grain of truth in this he would have been investigated by SEC for insider trading which is a major offence, so if you have any proof call them up else shut up.

His message is the beginning of closing clinton's campaign. While I would prefer to end things now for Clinton, there are those that just wish Obama would implode before Penn.
I only foresee more outrageous material between now and Penn coming up.
Economically the money being spent and raised by Clinton whom was a Republican in her youth is being wasted when it could be used by the Democrates to beat McCain in the General election. It would be better to donate these small towns, the DNC or Obama than donating to Clinton. Money being spent on Clinton is like buying a bankrupt stock and praying there is a reason someone will buy it for more.
Winning the election should be the focus of the Democrates. The country needs leaders whom will concentrate on the issues that the country needs to be focused on today. What might happen as a strategy by Bush has created awful outcomes on the USA initiatives. There are plenty of priorities that are not what if's, they are real. The 3 am call has already come and gone several times.
Bush flew people on planes to Saudia Arabia as his first decision. Three hurricanes hit the USA and people are still waiting for help three years later. Fraud is occurring throughout the financial system and there no changes yet. The dependence on oil has effected the economy in such a large way that we are in a recession.
EMO has depicted in his cartoon lots of major issues of concern effecting America today.
http://mynonprofitwebsite.com/blog/category/emo-ca ...- neel360, on 03/23/2008, -3/+2I'm not sure the Democrates can tack the small towns and donate them, I mean Saudia Arabia just isn't interested.

Obama has made plenty of negative jabs at the other candidates. He's consciously misrepresented McCain on the 100 years in Iraq, he constantly tries to paint McCain as Bush (despite the fact that there are many fundamental differences between the two) and has made numerous attacks on Clinton.
You can like and support a candidate without trying to represent them as "perfect" and "flawless". Obama is a good man, but he's not perfect, to actually believe so is to be dishonest.- MutatedNantuko, on 03/23/2008, -0/+4He has, everyone has. That's kind of the nature of politics. But the difference is that he doesn't pride himself on tearing other people down. He hasn't built his campaign on the idea that "I'm better than X, Y, Z, because they are going to come into your house at night and steal your children."
- letherial, on 03/24/2008, -0/+0There is also a difference between attacking somone's character, and attacking someones view point. You cant run without some negativity, infact, some is good. he started by explaning first why clinton would be better president then any other, notice that he took a leap here and basically said if she wins then she would still be better then mcain, bush, etc, was trying to keep the party strong. he has a sense of honor about him that i so much respect. Second, he compared the differnces and attack her standpoints and views, but not her. he basically said i will keep the politics out of my descion making, clinton does not. it is a fine line that every politcion has to walk, its realy a land mine field. he walks it as if he knows exactly where the mines are. i very much respect is intelligence, and his judgement calls. he handles pressure well, can think on a dime. but hey, im biased because im hoping he gets it.
- theaceoffire, on 03/23/2008, -1/+36Notice how he managed to get through that without suggesting that McCain would be better than Hillary?

Its impossible to know if Obama is a "closet racist", but god knows he doesn't vote, talk, or act that way. "Naive" my ass, you're just looking to spit hate.- dball48, on 03/23/2008, -31/+5actually he does talk like that, especially when discussing his grandma. also, it's a pretty good indicator that someone is a racist when they attend a black separatist church.
- Lurline, on 03/23/2008, -3/+19Bringing up someone's racism to talk about the issues and reality of white racism does not make one racist.
- tharju, on 03/23/2008, -4/+4how so? Oh i got it..you are seeing Obama as a black man! FYI, he is half white half black. He could be a white man you know ;)
- burnblue, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2I don't get this 'separatist' talk. It's as if people with the same culture never group together to do anything. It's as if white people aren't welcome in the church, or as if Trinity isn't part of a denomination with many majority-white churches. As a matter of fact if you would step into an 'ordinary' church which you'll notice has mostly white people, does that mean it's 'white separatist'? No! People just worship with who it's easiest to communicate with.
I'm not saying that's the way it has to be, I'm very happy when diverse groups can do stuff together. But I was a Jamaican guy welcomed into a Chinese church which I never once accused of being 'separatist'.

That whore.- typo180, on 03/23/2008, -7/+1Why would she drop out in such a close race? And why can't you make a political point without comparing Clinton to an evil monster and a whore? Get your mind out of the gutter.
- PHiZ187, on 03/23/2008, -0/+4It is not a close race at all. She has ZERO statistical chances of winning. The delegate math is against here. The popular vote is against her. And, the superdelegates are not going to overturn the will of the electorate. Forget about it.
- purplelantern, on 03/23/2008, -1/+1The same applies to Obama. Nobody has a chance for a knock out punch. It is going to be up to the super delegates. There is only about 10% differences in terms of popular votes. There are still more primaries to come.
- unmarked, on 03/23/2008, -0/+5Agree with you on the name calling, no need for that. Side note: Hillary shouldn't be questioning Barack's patriotism either.
As for it being a close race. That's more Clinton spin than anything else. Anyone else, and they would be driving out of the campaign. The nomination is about delegates. In pledge delegates, it is almost impossible for her to catch up to Barack Obama. Hillary is counting on somehow convincing super delegates (like Bill Richardson) to back her even though Obama is ahead in pledge delegates, states won, and popular vote.

- shortysmyname, on 03/23/2008, -0/+6Obama has held elected office for 11 years (four more than Hillary). Obama sponsored over 820 bills while serving in the Illinois senate (serving 8 years, from 1996-2004). He introduced 233 bills regarding Healthcare reform, 125 bills regarding Poverty and Public Assistance, 112 Crime fighting bills, 97 Economic bills, 62 Education bills, 60 Human Rights and Anti-discrimination bills, 21 Ethics bills, 20 Environmental bills, 15 Gun Control bills, 6 Veteran Affairs bills, and many, many others. He authored the most sweeping ethics reform bill passed into Illinois law in over 20 years. He sponsored a law enhancing tax credits for low-income workers, negotiated welfare reform and promoted increased subsidies for child care. Obama also led the passage of legislation mandating videotaping of homicide interrogations, and a law to monitor racial profiling by requiring police to record the race of drivers they stopped.
In 2002 Obama spoke out publicly against the war in Iraq, saying he does not oppose all war, just dumb wars, and proceeded to accurately predict the quagmire of Iraq.
Obama was elected to the United States senate in 2004. In his first year (before he decided to run for president) he authored 152 bills, and co-sponsored another 427. These included the Coburn-Obama government Transparency Act of 2006 (signed into law by Bush), The Lugar-Obama initiatives (working with republican, Richard Lugar) aimed at nuclear non-proliferation and conventional weapons threat reduction. He is one of only 2 lawmakers sponsoring a campaign finance reform bill that currently sits in the senate. There are 890 bills in Obama's name since he entered the Senate. He has Cosponsored 1096.
Obama currently serves on the Senate Committees for Foreign Relations; Health, Education, Labor and Pensions; Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs; and Veterans' Affairs. The other impulses are those changes we choose internally, aimed at keeping the organization or the self in tune with the present and sensitive to possible future events. - GhostyBoy, on 03/23/2008, -0/+7I'm Canadian and I have been watching this thing since last year, extremely closely.
Obama is a great candidate for the dems, and he should win. The biggest tragedy is that the Repubs/media marginalized Ron Paul (Don't try and pretend it didn't happen, we all saw it and it was obvious).
Obama would likely still win, but the debates in the general would be phenomenal. Obama is an amazing speaker, extremely intelligent, Paul has a host of revolutionary ideas...the debates would be some of the greatest in history.
Instead they chose McCain, a war-monger with a knack for saying stupid things and towing the unpopular party line. Obama will eat this guy alive in the general election with absolutely no real contest. That's good and all, but I would rather see Obama at his best, put to the test by a phenomenal candidate like Paul. - MacSuxWindozSux, on 03/24/2008, -1/+2I'm Canadian and also think Barack Obama is by far the best choice.

- ivan14, on 03/23/2008, -25/+6what seriously bothers me is that Barack Obama is saying that he practices good judgment! oh really? That must be why when he was a state senator of Illinois, most of his votes were 'present'. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22335739
Now, where exactly is 'good judgment' in that? Where is the decisiveness in that? Obama is not only a good speech plagiarizer, he's also quite a fence sitter.- dbajpai, on 03/23/2008, -1/+7It's better than the knee-jerk judgements most legislators make based on a bill title rather than the content of a bill. A dirty secret is that they often haven't had time to read a bill and they vote on it anyway. A present vote is, to me, more courageous than voting for/against a bill without reading it.
- Rohhob, on 03/23/2008, -1/+12Seriously RTFA
"Mr. Obama cast 4,000 votes in the Illinois Senate and used the present vote to protest bills that he believed had been drafted unconstitutionally or as part of a broader legislative strategy."
"He voted “present,” effectively sidestepping the issue, an option he invoked nearly 130 times as a state senator."
Please think for yourself before voting and not just what the news tells you.- Anisotropic, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2He could have voted against the "unconstitutional" bills.
- Fantom05, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2If you listen to what he says, instead of just reading summations from cable news websites, you'll hear he's done a lot more than gets mentioned in the press.
- amida, on 03/23/2008, -1/+3There is some strategy involved. In at least some cases he voted that way on abortion legislation in cooperation with pro-choice groups. They even suggested the strategy--it's not just a case of Obama failing to make a stand. He's working in the context of a bigger picture.

His race speech has elevated him far above any other candidate. He's now a true people-person. After the speech, I just wanted to hug people and work with them to do something good for our country... I am inspired.
Imagine the change he will bring when in Washington.
And also, finally, he's got a good standing even internationally, so he's really an all-rounder.- ivan14, on 03/23/2008, -10/+3so you're going to vote for him just because he talks well? it's a pipe dream of mine that voters like you shall never be allowed to vote.

- unmeitatakau, on 03/23/2008, -17/+1Can someone please tell me 2 things first of all where is he going to get the money for all of his magical plans and second solid facts that back up anything he said in that speech because from the way I heard it Obama wasn't against the war in Iraq he didn't do a thing about it.
- Slipkey, on 03/23/2008, -0/+41) If you look at any of his plans, they detail where the money comes from pretty well. For example his education plan calls for eliminating of bank-subsidized, variable interest rate loans which cost more than the fixed rate (Stafford, etc) loans to begin with. Dig into any of the details of his plans and the money is there.
2) He did as much as I think he could have. He was a in a US Senate campaign and spoke out against it publicly on many occasions - events and TV. It wasn't necessarily the "safest" political strategy in Illinois at the time and his position was a bold one at a time when most Americans had been snow-jobbed into believing that a legitimate WMD threat existed.- unmeitatakau, on 03/23/2008, -3/+1I know this may sound stupid but I don't really know much about banking and loans could you explain how eliminating of bank-subsidized, variable interest rate loans which cost more than the fixed rate loan makes him enough money to let's say give every college bound student in the US 4,000 dollars for tuition each year
- Slipkey, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1I should clarify. The $4000 is an "exchange for public service" plan which is paid for by reducing subsidization for community programs for payroll infrastructure and applying that towards a volunteer-based model. Funding also comes from the elimination of the Federal Family Education Loan Progam which subsidizes the banks instead of passing those funds on directly. From his "College Affordability Fact Sheet" :
"Currently, there are two basic college loan programs: the Direct Loan system, funded publicly, and the Federal Family Education Loan Program, funded privately by banks and lenders who receive subsidies and guarantees from the government. Privately funded loans cost more per loan than the Direct Loan program and provide no greater benefits. Obama will save taxpayer money billions by eliminating the more expensive private loan program, and directing that money into aid for students. "
The cost savings on that program are two-fold: elimination of incentives paid directly to the banks and cost savings in underwriting the bail-outs from defaulted loans. It's conceivable that those two in combination could actually save more money than $4K per year, however some of that will go back into Direct loans. The public service overhead will channel some funds away from those programs which are discretionary currently in exchange for volunteer service.

You could also learn a little history. He was in the Illinois State Senate when he spoke against the war. The Illinois Senate wasn't really consulted on the war.
But you know, if Rush told you something else, he's probably right.- unmeitatakau, on 03/23/2008, -0/+1MY OWN IGNORANGE!?!? I'm here trying to learn so apologize, open your eyes and think before you talk.
- Slipkey, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1I agree with @unmeitatakau. He shouldn't be slammed for questioning the financials of Obama's plan. That's absolutely fair game and is a "teachable moment" IMHO
- dbajpai, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1If you intended that as a question, I obviously missed your point and I apologize. I took it as a sarcastic statement of the kind that ignorant conservative "dittoheads" always make. If this was indeed an honest question, slipkey did a much better job of answering it.

- oldgal, on 03/23/2008, -0/+1Having spent way too many years in the IT world, I can tell just by looking at the websites that Obama's was a collaborative effort negotiated on a clear set of expections/objectives. It empowers the supporters. Clinton's and McCain's, while equally professional are typical corporate top-down development from detail spec. What supporters can/can't do is much more controlled.

It's much easier to say "THe president should always do what the american people want" or "The president should solely do what he (or she) thinks is right, regardless of public opinion " but really a good president can't be beholden to either, they must take both into consideration

- StarlessKnight, on 03/23/2008, -1/+3Yes, that's what the teleprompter keeps telling you to say, but it isn't telling you anything any more factually true than those polls.
- FullmetalGinta, on 03/23/2008, -1/+1Ummm..... over?????
I mean no matter how much U hate Obama even Clinton wouldn't say his campaign is over, he is winning WINNING- RRJackson, on 03/23/2008, -0/+1He's got a minor lead in delegates right this minute, but none of that will give him the nomination. They're both going to Denver without a clear win and the DNC isn't going to hand him the nomination. Dean will instruct the supers to vote for Clinton before they're seated.
- IpecacNeat, on 03/24/2008, -0/+0Please, you are making yourself look bad. Whoever has the delegate lead will get the nomination. Overturning the vote of the people will tear the party apart.

- hilikus34, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1I wonder when the Diggers will figure this out? Most of these people probably don't remember Walter Mondale, but I see Obama sharing his fate. If, of course, he can even make it to the general election.
- Raoulduke212, on 03/23/2008, -0/+15"She has calibrated her responses based on politics, instead of good judgment...that's part of what happened in iraq"
Exactly - Chordinator, on 03/23/2008, -8/+1If you look at 1:56, Obama flips her off. Sweet.
- Darksaber11, on 03/23/2008, -9/+3Well, the beginning of this video disappointed me a little. Whatever criticisms of Obama I might have I have always considered him a talented orator, but at the beginning of the video he could hardly string three words together.
- mjpanzer, on 03/23/2008, -5/+5what does it mean to "get on the fax"?
- logicmethod, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1"Get all the facts"...
- kilgoretrout88, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1'get all the facts'
Though if you wish to stand on your fax machine, I'm sure nobody here would stop you.
- wecaanation, on 03/23/2008, -10/+3You don't have to explain anything Obama. I will vote for you because you're black.

- mutagenesis, on 03/23/2008, -0/+1He needs to emphasize government transparency more. He brought it in at the end, but he should have laid it out in the start with foreign policy differences.
- Sulleric, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1why?
- rajanKazhman, on 03/23/2008, -1/+2Obama is the real deal! If anyone can get us going in the right direction again it's him.
- iXetsuei, on 03/23/2008, -1/+1Sweet I live in Salem.
- Venky80, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2I really want to know if Obama hasn't taken money from special interests, I as debating with a hillary supporter and he said of course obama has taken money from nuclear lobbyists etc.
Please can someone clarify>- meese, on 03/23/2008, -0/+3Wrong, he hasn't.
Sure, employees of energy companies have given him money, but these aren't organized donations - they're just like employees of any other business who have contributed as individuals.
Clinton, on the other hand, has taken money from actual lobbyists, and has taken more than even any Republican took.
