Obama Warns GOP "Lay Off My Wife"
abcnews.go.com — Sen. Barack Obama ripped into a Republican ad today that targets comments made by his wife, Michelle, and called the GOP tactic "low class" and "detestable." But if Michelle Obama is holding her own rallies, is very opinionated, and has direct access to Barack 24/7, why aren't her statements fair game?

- Troika37, on 05/19/2008, -6/+42Obama's camp has attacked Bill Clinton repeatedly and ferociously over the months whenever he makes a statement with which they take issue. Why is his spouse off-limits when she injects herself into the campaign, but Hillary's spouse is not afforded the same protection?
- groverblue, on 05/19/2008, -24/+8I agree that she made herself fair game. Let's face it though, the ***** that the GOP is attacking is completely ridiculous. They're like ***** school children.
- Troika37, on 05/19/2008, -4/+21You believe it is unreasonable for a competing candidate (be that McCain or Clinton) to question why it is that the wife of a major candidate states (in a public forum which SHE sought out) she has never been proud of her country until her husban garnered support? Laura Bush and Nancy Reagan were both attacked in the press and by the Democrats. Is it unfair to disallow politicall attacking the wife of a Democrat when she makes sure she is the issue of discussion?
Obama has also attacked his competition for quoting him and his webpage. Please tell me what is fair game.

- Krisgi, on 05/19/2008, -25/+10McCain would be advised to not go the Wife Route; his own Mrs is just a spoiled heiress, drug addict and thief who has limited herself to the Stepford Smile, the vacant stare, and the occasional nod, like la-la-la-Laura Bush, while taking a back seat to an old fogey and his archaic views with regards to what we should do to solve our nation´s grave problems.
I don´t think that she has even opened her Botox-ed lips to say anything more than please and thank you and mmmm.... I love America... mmmm.... I really do.
Ooops! Almost forgot: her only other verbal statement of any worth was that SHE IS NOT GOING TO RELEASE HER PERSONAL TAX RETURNS EVER. NEVER NEVER EVER EVER and nobody´s going to make me.
She is just so above and beyond mere mortals... I wonder where she stashes the wings and the diamond tiara... oh, maybe they´re in a safe-deposit box with her vast collection of stolen prescription meds.
Michelle Obama is a highly-educated and self-made woman who has risen above many social and financial disadvantages in order to get where she is today: a bright, charismatic, successful, socially-conscious, financially-independent mother of two young daughters on the verge of being First Lady. Her husband didn´t use her private jet to fly anywhere. Nor has he lived off her like a parasite and used her clout to rise in politics, as in John McCain´s case.
Michelle will always tell it like it is, and I will thank her for that, and already have. She has released her tax returns and has given many a speech and an opinion. The most controversial ones may or may not be of some people´s liking, but she would be a huge asset to the Nation as a mind, a voice, and, above all, a strength and an example of class. Real class. Not the Cindy McCain I-couldn´t-possibly-put-my-foot-in-my-mouth-cuz-I´d-have-to-take-the-silver-spoon-out-first kind. Even then, she still managed to do it. Yep.
So when John McCain wants to start throwing stones at people´s wives, he should start with his own first.- KJeffV, on 05/19/2008, -2/+18Evidently you have a prob w/wealth. Doesn't that usually indicate the complainer has none? {A wise man once said, "Sex is very ordinary . . . until you're not getting any."}
Cindy & John McCain signed a pre-nup, disallowing him her eventual fortune, and they file w/IRS separately, meaning her income/wealth is no one's biz but her own, unlike our two Socialist cands. Try to keep up, wouldja?- Krisgi, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1I'm an implantologist and oral surgeon, and am looking at huge views of the Mediterranean right now.
It's just such a poorly-paid profession.... gosh. Can barely make ends meet.
My father has a construction company, inc. in California.
So, I guess I just have a problem with THIEVES. Despite all the advantages and privileges, I was taught not to steal, just to study and work hard. - Krisgi, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1John McCain has used his wife´s money to finance his political career. Starting with the private Budweiser jet that he used some loophole in election law to "charter" cheaply and thus move around during the primaries.
IOW, the public has every right to know exactly who, when, and where he gets $$$ to run for POTUS. Even if it´s the Missus who gives it to him. ESPECIALLY, when they have a Pre-nup...
He didn´t, and doesn´t, have enough of his own (minus her) to even think of being anything but just another retired military official living on a $50,000/year pension.
With all due respects to all these retired servicemen, one of which was my grandfather.
How´s that for "keeping up", KJeffV.... You just can´t hit a nail on the head, huh?- KJeffV, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2Not so good: Pull your head out of some poor client's alveolar socket and re-read about McAmnesty's BORROWING fr/his wife . . . perfectly legal and still doesn't put her on the dais, which was the crux of the argument. "The peoples' right to know" ≠ Cindy's finances aired publicly. . . lest you believe erroneously that all lending institutions/individuals are on the hook simply on acct of business/generosity.
- Krisgi, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Her argument that her children have a right to privacy may be legal, but it is morally unconvincing and has already given rise to ugly rumors and theories that, in crescendo as they are, won´t help her husband´s credibility at all in the Generals. In fact, her attitude on this may destroy his chances directly.
If she had nothing to hide, children aside, she would be happy to air her financial information. It would only be to John´s advantage.
The problem is that she KNOWS that her business dealings represent conflict of interest matters that would be difficult to justify or even explain to the American public, and, considering that the consensus already out there in the field is that McCain can be bought and sold as long as the price is right.... Mmmmmm... Not looking too "up" for McBush come November.
There is always a lobbyist in bed with John, huh? I bet Cindy´s tax returns accredit the fact that it is usually more like an orgy in which they both participate.
You Cindy McCain band-wagoneers fear the same outcome for your candidate, and that´s normal, but this collective obstinacy is not in your favor.
She is his spouse and an important financial supporter, and thus has double liability when voters judge both his character and his real connections with entities in the Back Room who speak in whispers when they cut the deals.
It is a ***** excuse, and will come into the foreground more and more as the elections advance.
Mark my word.
You might convince me that it is all legally "cut and dried", but I would still continue to call this all a convenient pretext... And that´s just me. How are you going to convince millions of others who are undecided still as to a candidate and may not have the ability to understand what you are saying?
So, with all due respect to the sophistication of your allegations, most people just won´t give a ***** and want to see the papers. Call me simple, but you severely misjudged my economic status. Odds are that you are kind of clumsy on making calls in other realms of life as well.
Looks like you had all your "wisdom" teeth out already. Or was it a total agenesis? - KJeffV, on 05/20/2008, -1/+11st you wrote, "IOW, the public has every right to know exactly who, when, & where he gets $ to run f/PotUS."
So I wrote, "The `peoples' right to know´ does NOT equal Cindy's finances aired publicly."
Then you wrote, "Her argument that her children have a right to privacy may be legal...."
Are you even aware of the argument at hand? I'll remind you at the risk of boring to tears everyone else present. Cindy McCain need not publicize her finances f/two very good reasons: 1)Her finances are separate fr/her husband's on acct of their pre-nup & separate IRS filings. 2)She routinely avoids making "1st Lady" commentary; she has not "mounted the dais."
"You Cindy McCain band-wagoneers fear the same outcome f/your candidate...."
You have me confused w/some other handsome fellow. MY candidate is, was, & always has been Alan Keyes—Hey, remember when you insinuated that I was racially prejudiced!?—but it happens that I will probably vote f/Pastor Chuck Baldwin.
"...most people[sic] just won´t give a ***** and want to see the papers [anyway]."
I understand that; I simply don't agree. My moral, legal, & logical compasses are not usually bounced around by others' opinions.
"How are you going to convince millions of others...?"
What makes you believe I'm going to try?
"...you severely misjudged my economic status."
No, I didn't. I read your profile a long time ago. When I wrote "wealth," I was referring to "FY" money, and I don't mean "fiscal year."
"Looks like you had all your 'wisdom' teeth out already."
Wow, is that DENTAL humor? I'm sixty; 1, 16, 17, & 32 were gone before you were peeing your pants.

- Charlotte_Web, on 05/19/2008, -2/+14It's all about policy. I don't care if Cindy McCain doesn't release her tax records, nor would I care if Michelle Obama refused to release her tax records. The question is, How is Michelle Obama going to influence policy? And in which direction will she influence it? Those are the major questions here.
Barack is preaching a message of unity, and Michelle is preaching one of division. If John and Cindy McCain were similarly conflicted in their messages, then yes, put Cindy McCain in the spotlight.
But, dirt-digging about personal stuff... who really cares? - JointVenture, on 05/19/2008, -3/+7What a *****, she has done more charity work than most.

- milobennett, on 05/19/2008, -7/+35Like the Democrats didn't attack Nancy Reagan. Of course he has a point, she is pretty indefensible. When you cant defend your only tactic is to shut down debate.
- Oracle95, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2The attacks on Nancy Reagan and Betty Ford make this insignificant and neither woman really campaigned for their husbands. If Michelle Obama wants to get up and fire shots at her husband's opponents, then she's fair game at any rebuttal that might come her way, especially if the rebuttal is relevant to her comments.
- IconoclastStill, on 05/19/2008, -12/+26Like wifey, like spouse . . . both of them lying hypocrites, younger and possibly even more malevolent versions of the clinton circus. - rpfinley, on 05/19/2008, -6/+33I would be all for the GOP not bringing his wife into the discussion if he would stop letting her make speeches and rally supporters. Once she started making speeches and appearances she stopped becoming just his wife and became a part of his campaign team. While campaigning for votes she said "for the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country." I would like to know why she thinks her country has been so horrible up to this point.

Let's talk about Cindy McCain having had an affair with John McCain while he was still married to his former wife, Carol.
Let's also talk about Cindy McCain having invested millions in Sudan.
Let's also talk about Cindy McCain stealing drugs from her own non-profit organization to feed her addiction.- DavidS9, on 05/19/2008, -0/+17Lets talk about how she isn't blaming all her problems on black people.
Lets talk about how she isn't calling America a hate filled country.
Lets talk about how she isn't campaigning for votes for her husband with stump talking.
We can't cause she isn't no one is saying she is perfect cause she isn't, and I dare you to find someone who is, but she isn't going for the spotlight by saying how racist and hate filled this country is. - tkstock, on 05/22/2008, -0/+1You're too funny.
John McCain's "affair" occurred while he and his wife were essentially separated. Even she doesn't hold it against him.
Cindy McCain didn't have millions invested in Sudan. She had $2 million "invested in funds owning stock in firms which reportedly did business with Sudan." And, even with that tenuous connection, she has since sold those holdings.
The third point is true - she was addicted to painkillers in the early 1990s and resorted to stealing them from a medical charity she ran. And that affects John McCain how?
What more would you like to talk about?

- eir574, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3"Stealing drugs is NOT WRONG?"
It's wrong, but it's not unforgivable, and the fact that McCain's wife succumbed to addiction and broke the law doesn't mean that we should wonder whether he exercised poor judgment in marrying her. Instead, we should see the fact that he stood by her as strength of character. It's easy to discard someone who makes a mistake like that. The noble and loving thing to do is to stand by her, help her through it, and defend her against those who think this forever makes her a bad person.

When a person makes the statement "classless hypocrites", common sense would indicate a degree of class on the part of the originator of such a statement.
Receiving the support of those from a "family values" perspective generally requires an element of class as well as a degree of patriotism, not vulgarities or anti-American sentiments.

That argument is no longer valid when the wife goes out campaigning for you, spreading anti-American propaganda; clearly states that she has never been proud of our country, attends racist gatherings with her husband and friends, and so on.
- jerger23, on 05/19/2008, -1/+14If she had made the comment in private or in regards to an issue not related to her husband's campaign, I would entertain an argument to the contrary; however, she made the statement that is played in the ad while speaking at a rally in support of her husband in his run for the office; that makes her a valid political target.
- MurphyWatson, on 05/19/2008, -8/+1This isn't so much like when Bill Clinton gets attacked, hes fair game cause he is a politician. This is more like when Hilary was accused of whoring Chelsea out and she threw a fit over that.
- geneikillua, on 05/19/2008, -0/+20Michelle Obama has had her own rallies in Obama's campaign. I think this makes her fair game, especially if what is being attacked is the subject of her speech at those campaigns.
IMO spouses of Presidents and Presidential candidates should mostly keep their mouths shut when it concerns anything really that important because they're not President/running for President. Alas, that's not so much the case anymore in American politics, except maybe with Laura Bush who really only ever talked about the importance of reading to children, which no one disagrees with, so you're going to see one's spouse brought into this much more. But it's the spouses themselves who are legitimizing these lines of attack. - psiege, on 05/19/2008, -0/+17Boo hoo. This guy cries more than my 2 year old. Is he going to cry when he goes to speak to Ahmadinejad of Iran, and he tells Obama to piss off they're going to make nukes anyways, then wipe us and Israel off the map? Now that's a leader for you.
- epublicus, on 05/19/2008, -1/+15You know what they say Mr. O:
"If you can't take the heat, get her back in the kitchen."- Oracle95, on 05/20/2008, -1/+4With Obama's backbone, it's more likely that HE's the one getting back into the kitchen. He's only allowed to wear wants when he's in public.
- keymanjim2, on 05/19/2008, -0/+13"called the GOP tactic "low class" and "detestable.""
What was it called when the dnc did it to Laura Bush?- Pillage, on 05/20/2008, -0/+8standard operating procedures.
- Argentian, on 05/20/2008, -0/+9SkaRewU, Obama! If your little dear wife didn't enter the political arena and make statements on policy, against other people she doesn't approve of, and especially uses hate-speech against the USA, then she Might be considered off-limits.
Of course, then you could call her 'obotimized! - Pillage, on 05/20/2008, -0/+8Come on, what is he going to do? Denounce her? He can no more denounce his wife any more then he can denounce his pastor....
- keltin, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2Talk about a lack of character...
- elleigh2, on 05/20/2008, -0/+8Dig all the plussie above! This guy thinks he is special and noone should dare question him or his wife! She is out there holding her own rallies and making her own speeches and, yes, I think she is hoping to ride in on her husband's coattails like Hillary did and have a co-presidency! It is obvious who wears the pants in that family,,did you hear her tell him on the same interview that her girls were going to get a dog!?? (He wasn't for it!) She is probably the one to drag him to Rev. Wright's church, truth be known. The more she opens her mouth the more racists she comes off, oh, excuse me, blacks cannot be racists! And, while I am on a rant, we should be very concerned about the company they keep,,,Rezko, Wright, Ayres,,,to name a few!
- Qong, on 05/20/2008, -0/+9Here is what I and nearly everyone commenting here find scary, and what all Obama supporters should find scary:
He is calling out FREE SPEECH right in front of our eyes. His wife isn't fair game? Wrong. His wife is and has been a huge part of his campaign from the very beginning. He wants to take away our freedom of speech and he hasn't even received his party's nomination!
This guy is supposed to be the progressive candidate? This is supposed to be good for America? Think about that Obama supporters, is this what you really want for our country?
Shift your support before it's too late. - Krisgi, on 05/20/2008, -7/+1Cindy McCain stole from one of the charities in which she had done "so much work". But, then again, all you repugnicans already know that.... he he.
What poor losers you all are.- Troika37, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5As a dental surgeon, surely you know that Cindy McCain adopted a Bangladeshi girl with a severely cleft palate at the behest of Mother Teresa. I'm sure you're aware that she made this decision without first telling her husband, and that the couple have paid for dozens of operations to repair her palate and other medical problems.
I'm sure you're also aware that she travels around the world with a detonation team to clear land mines.
What a horrible woman.
As to her drug issue: During 1992, Tom Gosinski, the director of government and international affairs for AVMT, discovered her drug theft. Subsequently in 1992, her parents staged an intervention to force her to get help; she told her husband about her problem, attended a drug treatment facility, began outpatient sessions, and ended her three years of active addiction.
Looks like the woman fought her demons and won.
Care to compare her record to Obama's when it comes to drug use?

- markgl, on 05/20/2008, -1/+3If she is going to put herself out there and really push issues in the face of the opponents she must be prepared to be hit back! if you don't want in the line of fire stay back out of the way!
- smoothdogg00, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4Finally a story where it and the comments aren't 99% pro-Obama! Get this ***** to the front page!
- Jonnio, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5as soon as it hits the front page the tide will turn!
- picciano, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4Sorry, but he can't have it both ways. If he is going to have his wife as an active part of his campaign, making speeches, granting interviews, and attending political events, she becomes open to public criticism just like himself.
- MadKennyP, on 05/22/2008, -1/+1Cindy McCain admitted she had stolen the drugs from the American Voluntary Medical Team, her own charity, and had been investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration.
