McCain Launches "Truth Squad" With Swift Boat Vet
huffingtonpost.com — McCain publicly deplored the Swift Boat ads back in 2004, saying they were reminiscent of the smear campaigns launched against him during his initial White House run in 2000.

Oh well... at least they finally found someone who looks older than John McCain to back him up.- actorboy, on 06/30/2008, -15/+18Bud Day was McCain's cellmate in Vietnam and is one of the reasons McCain survived. I figured the big, fat "McCain Launches 'Truth Squad' With Swift Boat Vet" headline and related story took care of that. - hittnrun, on 07/01/2008, -11/+1Just because you liberal malcontents think the swift boat vets weren't being truthful, doesn't mean they weren't. The problem with libs is they have no ability for self examination. You recieve your talking points from huffnpuff and spread them around like a venereal disease.
- rossmcd, on 07/01/2008, -0/+9@hitnrun, regarding the truthfulness of the Swift Boat Vets
Summarized from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swift_Vets_and_POWs_f ...
Al French, one of the Vietnam veterans who gave a swon affidavit regarding John Kerry's behavior in battle later admitted that he had no first hand knowledge of the things he had previously sworn to. The statements of other Swift Boat Veterans for Truth were later found to contradict new and recorded statements from Vietcong witnessess at the battles in question. Steve Hayes, an early member of the group, eventually publicly broke with the group and voted for Kerry. His words: "It became clear to me that it was morphing from an organization to set the record straight into a highly political vendetta. They knew it was not the truth." - RungeKutta, on 07/01/2008, -0/+6@hittntun
You're either completely ignorant, or just as much of a lying bastard as the Rovians that devised the Swiftboaters smear campaign are.
Do you not think it was a little odd that they didn't show-up until Bush's military record was called into question? Wasn't it a bit suspicious that they went after every single aspect of Kerry's military career? It wasn't just something small like "well he was a desk clerk so he never even saw combat", but they even questioned his medals. You also don't think maybe they were a wee bit biased when there were people speaking out about him that had never served with him?
I'm not saying that serving the military is a necessary condition for being president, nor should someone receive priority over another because they were in the military. However the conservatives generally feel this way and that was exactly why Rove *had* to do something (from a conniving bastardly election pov) to help Bush with this. It doesn't matter how true it is, you just have to at least get people into the the "where there's smoke there's fire" mentality.
Come on, think a bit, or are you the tool that you're implying the "libs" are? - villageatheist, on 07/01/2008, -1/+1McCain: I'm gonna be president one day, if we get out of this prison cell. And you're gonna help me Bud.
Bud Day: Sure thing. I'd do anything for you.

- actorboy, on 07/01/2008, -8/+17Ha! Awesome. I'm being Dugg down for posting a mini-bio of Bud Day. Didn't take sides, just identified the guy. Only on Digg can you get a thumbs down for unbiased factoids.

It's OK - I think most of us hardcore political junkies know you're one of the good guys. - Halsfield, on 07/01/2008, -6/+3i can sympathize with you, diggers are really disappointing lately.
- koft, on 07/01/2008, -6/+8The rule that he broke was bitching about a bury. It works like this, on any given comment, your comment will bob up and down randomly, if you bitch in the next comment about your previous comment getting a bury, everybody who doesn't just dismiss it buries both. The bitch post gets buried for breaking the rule and the other post gets buried for lolz. The random bury dip factor plus the lolz buries put his original comment past the general diggable threshold. When you get to that point, you're soaking up more buries just because it's down. The down and out bury has nothing to do with lolz, it's a spite zombie bury invoked by miserable diggers who have nothing better to do than follow the herd.
- rossmcd, on 07/01/2008, -4/+4Agreed w/ kroft ... I actually dug up your first comment, but its bad form to whine about buries. Just let the content of your comments speak for itself.
- Halsfield, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0the people that broke the "rules" of digg , were the ones who buried something that was helpful, informative, unaggressive/unassuming, and related to the article. Like he said, people on digg lately are burying whole pages of comments because they think its funny, bury brigade = makes me go elsewhere where people have all their brain cells firing.

- Pittance, on 07/01/2008, -0/+2Not to mention that Clark's record isn't the topic. It's McCains. Clark could have been a full-fledge traitor and it still wouldn't have made his remarks invalid. His remarks still hold water. I could say it today and it would be just as true. Its just when a general says something about the military, people listen.
- staxofmax, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3FTA: "...General Clark spent a month in Vietnam, got badly wounded and was evacuated, that was his experience. I say let's hold the two of them up and compare them." -Bud Day
Yes, let's compare them. They both were awarded the silver star in Vietnam. General Clark was awarded 4 Legion of Merits to McCain's 1, Clark was awarded 2 Bronze Stars to McCain's 1, McCain was awarded a bunch of medals for being a POW, while Clark was awarded 7 Distinguished Service Medals, and Orders of Merit from Germany and France. General Clark went on to become Supreme Allied Commander Europe of Nato. McCain retired as a Captain.- Fordi, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1In addition, McCain's experience in Vietnam, while tragic, had nothing to do with leadership (the basic root of the job of President) - but a lot to do with personal survival. Just getting to 'General', as Clark did, is evidence of leadership ability; prior to General, you're at the 'Do What I Say' level of leadership. You don't get higher up without getting to the 'You want to do what I say' level.
- Halsfield, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0i disagree with that fordi, getting to higher ranks in the armed forces also has a lot to do with who you know, who you can get to make a commendation, and being a brown noser if necessary. There are plenty of generals out there that i fully respect, but there are just as many , just as in politics, that got there simply because they are buddies with the higher ups and know how to play the promotion game.

http://www.opinionjournal.com/editorial/feature.ht ...- Sogui, on 07/01/2008, -11/+4The Swift Boat Vets who made up stories about Kerry were deplorable, but there were other Vietnam Vets who hated Kerry for how he testified against fellow servicemen in Vietnam as "baby-killers", testimonies like Kerry's unintentionally led to things like our troops getting boo'd and spit on as they returned home.
Not saying Kerry was wrong for what he did, but I can see how Vietnam Vets would dislike him for what he did. Bud Day didn't pretend to be a Swift Boat veteran, he simply testified about his feelings toward Kerry and his treatment of fellow servicemen?- MadKennyP, on 07/01/2008, -0/+4I agree that many Vets were angry at Kerry for his testimony and his positions upon returning to the U.S., whether justified or not. But in my mind, that was a case of "shooting the messenger."
- noprtyaff, on 07/01/2008, -16/+3Truth or not, John Kerry has always been a flake. It is a shame that is the best the Democratic party could come up with in 2004. And now we have the Marxist Obama running for President, clearly a non-choice in November. And SBVT Bud Day says absolutely nothing about that? There is credibility for you. McCain and Clark as well, I wish they both would have stayed in the military where they were actually serving their country instead of selling it out.

- DaDrake, on 07/01/2008, -20/+4Despite the fact the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth was comprised of many democrats, and the most outspoken ones (the ones on the video) were mostly life long democrats.
The reason for the attack was two folded. First, many felt Kerry served dishonorably by not properly earning metals and diminishing the importance of those medals for real heroes. Secondly, most of the swift vets were deeply hurt by the comments Kerry made after the war. Whatever the reason, the fact remains that Kerry pissed off most of the men he served with.
Kerry mistake was running on his war record. Bush also has an equally non-inspiring service record but Bush didn't promote it (And didn't spend million on TV ads to highlight how he was once a soldier). If Kerry didn't highlight his disputed military record, the swift vets attacks would have met death ears.
So yea... this is why MANY democrats (including Dean) blame Kerry for loosing the election. His mistake was running on his war record.- hipnerd, on 07/01/2008, -1/+17"Despite the fact the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth was comprised of many democrats, and the most outspoken ones (the ones on the video) were mostly life long democrats."
That is simply not true. Please name the soldiers who were "lifelong Democrats" and members of Swiftboat Veterans for Truth.
"The reason for the attack was two folded. First, many felt Kerry served dishonorably by not properly earning metals and diminishing the importance of those medals for real heroes."
No members of Swiftboat Veterans for Truth were aboard Kerry's boat during any of the incidents for which he was decorated. Of those who served in Kerry's boat crew, only Stephen Gardner joined SBVT.[18] He was not present on any of the occasions when Kerry won his medals, including his Purple Hearts. Gardner appeared in two of the group's television advertisements.
All other living members of Kerry's crew supported his presidential bid, and some frequently campaigned with him as his self-described 'band of brothers'. Kerry crewmembers have disputed some of SBVT's various allegations: "totally false" (Drew Whitlow), "garbage" (Gene Thorson), and "a pack of lies" (Del Sandusky).
"Secondly, most of the swift vets were deeply hurt by the comments Kerry made after the war. Whatever the reason, the fact remains that Kerry pissed off most of the men he served with."
Closer to the truth. Kerry's vocal antiwar efforts after returning stateside did anger some vets. But as has been mentioned, Kerry did not "piss off most of the men he served with." Far from it. The people who actually served on his boat almost unanimously supported him and verified that he deserved his medals and was a capable leader in Vietnam.
The one exception was Stephen Gardner, who was not present at any of the incidents when Kerry earned his medals.
"Kerry mistake was running on his war record. Bush also has an equally non-inspiring service record but Bush didn't promote it (And didn't spend million on TV ads to highlight how he was once a soldier). If Kerry didn't highlight his disputed military record, the swift vets attacks would have met death ears."
Kerry's record was never disputed until it was politically advantageous for Bush's surrogates to do so. Bush's camp was willing to drag a decorated veteran's name through the mud in order to win an election. And to compare Kerry's honorable and courageous service in Vietnam to Bush's AWOL status from the Texas Air Guard is insulting.
Kerry was a war hero. In the black-is-white, up-is-down world of Republican politics, the fact that the war hero was a Democrat made it OK to trash his reputation while sticking up for a borderline deserter with a vice president who got five different deferments to avoid serving his country. - FredFredrickson, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3It's 'medals' you dumb *****.

Finally, historians have noted that metals, after the Korean war, were given out more numerously for less life-debilitating acts. Giving out metals, during an unpopular war, was a way to ensure soldiers felt committed to the mission (even tho they were drafted). - MysticKatDaddy, on 07/01/2008, -1/+1It's too bad US citizenship and the right to vote don't have to be earned for people born in the US. I would be for only granting citizenship to anyone who wants to come here or is born here and works for the government for 2 to 4 years; military service during wartime and the option of civil or military service during peacetime. Of course you would get a place to live, food, clothes, medical care etc for the duration but little or no pay.
- cindywren, on 07/01/2008, -3/+15I think McCain knows that his military record before being captured and after returning from Vietnam are not stellar. He has not released his military records. But we do know that he graduated 894th in his class out of 899 from the U.S. Naval Academy and after he returned from Vietnam, crashed 5 planes. There was no way he would go on to become a four-star general like his father and grandfather. He was reckless. He used his war hero status and connections that came from that status to get into politics. Now he's using it to get elected President.
Creating this shows he knows there's dirt on him he doesn't want people to know about.- rewinn, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1It's best not to attack McCain's service record since, although it's clear he used nepotism to get one of the highly valued pilot berths, his POW time makes him basically attack-proof. He's highly vulnerable on real issues, e.g. his temper and Iraq. Leave Vietnam alone - MrWhite7, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1his father and grandfather were admirals.

- exspasticcomics, on 07/01/2008, -0/+4it's extremely funny in my opinion. not only for 'hypocritical funniness' but also as what could likely be viewed as his first real -post primary election move. i mean- here's a guy who has flimsy support from the hardcore republicans because he's spent too many years supporting bipartisan bills in congress (ie- he works with the democrats too much..) -then turns around & supports the war with iraq & (possible..) war with iran (thus losing any credibility he may gained from supporting all those democratic bills..from the democrats..) next- he proves hands down that he is absolutely useless when it comes to public speech & debate & if you pair him up in a debate against Obama- he's going to make himself look like an absolute retard- his current move is to resort to hardcore goon tactics that basically demonized hillary- after this I imagine his next move will be to renounce the christian right & convert to Islam. --BUT DON'T GET ME WRONG!! I THINK HE CAN WIN! because their are some paranoid idiots running around out there right now.
- LeifEriksen, on 07/01/2008, -2/+1If McCain is such a retard why wouldn't Obama agree to townhall meetings with him? Obama is worthless without his precious teleprompter and speech writers. paranoia indeed- sir... if obama is full of hot air- i'm sure at the end of the day- it's his OWN hot air & not someone else's also- you mistaken me for an obama supporter.. i am not an obama supporter- i'm a guy who has to make a choose between 2 people who managed to make it out of the trenches & have the likeliest chance of becoming president-
one guy (McCain) tells me flat out that he's going to do stupid.. stupid.. things.
the other guy (Obama) says he's going to fix everything- but might be talking out of his @$$.
the worst thing that could happen if i pick McCain is- he'll do all the stupid crap he says he wants to do in the first place.
the worst thing that could happen if i pick Obama is- he won't do ANYTHING he says he's going to do- & just end up doing all the stupid crap McCain said he was going to do in the first place.
hey- i'm a realistic optimist- i'll take my chances. who knows? maybe Obama will actually try & do one or 2 of the things he's been blabbing about.
as for the town hall meeting thing- who the hell really cares? lol- like anybody could answer a question like "how would you solve the health care crisis in America?" in under 2 minutes or less. & television is for people with attention span deficits...

Not anymore. He's definitely sold-out completely for this election, and I think it's obvious to any one of any party.
I think it's very telling that a lot of vote-the-line Republicans absolutely hate McCain. - Terr01, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1I think a lot of it is situational. Perhaps his old stances worked in his old constituency in old elections.
McCain simply knows he won't have a chance of winning based on his old "maverick" stances, so now he's flip-flopping on things.
Unfortunately, with Presidencies often being two-term, he cannot flip back after being elected, so the comparatively hard-right McCain we see now is probably what we'd continue to get if he gets elected.- frontalpha, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1I'd still think you people are jumping to conclusions about his conscious that can never be proved. Explainint his behavior to pragmatic choices faced by a politician seeking election? Extremely tame and supportable by comparison.
But then you go on to tell me to ask myself about "dreamy messiah Obama".
Now *THAT* is jumping to conclusions about someone's consciousness which can never be proved, isn't it?

Huffpost may have slightly biased articles, but Faux news is often just complete lies or sensationalist reports that are intended to make people believe things that are untrue.
and besides all that, Fox news has way more viewers..WAY more, so the amount of damage that Fox news causes to our society is WAY worse then anything Huffpost could do. - PubeStache, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Ah I see. - Sogui, on 07/01/2008, -9/+6George Everett "Bud" Day (born February 24, 1925) is a former U.S. Air Force pilot who served during the Vietnam War. He is often cited as being the most decorated U.S. service member since General Douglas MacArthur, having received some seventy decorations, a majority for actions in combat. Day is a recipient of the Medal of Honor.
....
Day was on his 65th mission and acting as check pilot for Capt. Kippenham, who was flying as aircraft commander for the first time. 37mm antiaircraft fire crippled the aircraft, forcing the crew to eject. In the ejection, Day's right arm was broken in three places when he struck the side of the cockpit, and he also experienced eye and back injuries.
Kippenham was rescued, but Day was unable to contact the rescue helicopter by survival radio and was quickly captured by North Vietnamese local militia. On his fifth night, when he was still within twenty miles of the DMZ, Day escaped from his initial captors despite his serious injuries. Although stripped of both his boots and flight suit, Day crossed the Demilitarized Zone back into South Vietnam, becoming the only U.S. prisoner to escape from North Vietnam. Within two miles of the U.S. Marine firebase at Con Thien and after 12-15 days of evading, he was captured again, this time by a Viet Cong patrol that wounded him in the leg and hand with gunfire.
Taken back to his original camp, Day was tortured for escaping, breaking his right arm again. He then was moved to several prison camps near Hanoi, where he was periodically beaten, starved, and tortured. In December 1967 Day shared a cell with Navy Lt. Cmdr. John S. McCain III who was even more seriously injured and emaciated. Air Force Major Norris Overly nursed both back to life, and McCain later devised a makeshift splint of bamboo and rags that helped heal Day's seriously atrophied arm.

McCain's military record has somehow become a vital campaign issue, but what is it's significence really? The election is for president. Military competance shows the ability to follow orders, to weild a gun. It shows physical endurance, courage in the face of personal danger. All of which may be admirable in a soldier, but they are completly useless skills for a president. We wouldn't send a diplomat into battle, so why do people want to take his fighting ability into account for a management job?

No one supports Swift Boating as a legitimate campaign strategy any more. And people like you who engage in this type of behavior are finally seen for who they are: political hacks and miscreants of the worst kind. Enjoy your irrelevancy as Obama is welcomed into office in November.
- LukasSmith, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1ahahah. Welcome to blind sheep at digg.com. No obama fanatic supports me. Why am I surprised? especially on a discussion site festering with them? Lets stop pretending you are anything but partisan. Don't be as false as your master Obama.
- frontalpha, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1I couldn't have said it better LukasSmith. All the bashing about the "Truth Squad" could be thrown back at Obama tenfold... with credibility.
digg.
- portnoy, on 07/01/2008, -0/+5How does having another president that owes his entire career to his family instead of hard work and good grades equate any kind of change from the past two terms? And has anyone verified that McCain was actually shot down and not simply crashed was apparently his 'special talent'?
And even the North Vietnamese tried to send him away but he wouldn't leave? Yeah, that's who I want to lead the recovery from the disaster that has been the Bush administration. :P - SicKiller, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3This Anti-McCain shirt is perfect -
http://www.tshirtinferno.com/node/49 - Evilena, on 07/01/2008, -0/+6The Ministry of Truth would be a much better name.
- frontalpha, on 07/01/2008, -1/+1Harry Potter fan?
- Evilena, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1I have to ask...
Do you really think The Ministry of Truth was in the Harry Potter books or is this your way of rewriting old stories in keeping with current ideology?
War is Peace. Freedom is Slavery. Ignorance is Strength. - frontalpha, on 07/07/2008, -0/+1Haha I was just being dum.
- Evilena, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1I have to ask...

- IJstickI, on 07/01/2008, -8/+3i love how you digg liberals get all over fox being biased and so on, yet you constantly digg huffingtonpost, a flaming liberal site with ZERO credibility. your lover barack might even think this site is just a joke...although he is a Marxist
- sandiegodude, on 07/01/2008, -0/+2You just bring up credibility, then follow with a slander ("your lover") followed by calling Mr. Obama a Marxist...
Got any proof since you're so hard up on "credibility?"

- ProUSADigger, on 07/01/2008, -9/+3Huffington Post...buried.
Seriously, diggers?- Nanite, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1blocked for annoying bitching
- Dralha, on 07/01/2008, -1/+7A "truth squad" -- to reinforce the lies.
- djmollusk, on 07/01/2008, -3/+7POW = Mission Failed. There is your summary
- HiCaP, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1I like to see you have the Balls to say that to some POWs, no matter their age.
But a lowlife POS coward like you would run and hide.

- edniceville, on 07/01/2008, -6/+1The Huffington Post would not be fit for a birdcage liner if it were in print.
- stealthalbino, on 07/01/2008, -0/+2Unless they're just blantantly lying about their service records, there shouldn't be any reason for this campaign of truth. The senseless bickering is just more slop for the media to chew on.
- FredFredrickson, on 07/01/2008, -1/+5I'm not going to say who you SHOULD support, but anyone who supports Republicans in the upcoming election ought to have their goddamned head examined. When you vote for these assholes, you just show them that it's okay to do underhanded ***** like this.
