Librarian with ‘McCain=Bush’ Sign Kicked Out of Public Event
thinkprogress.org — Sen. John McCain was in Denver, CO, today for a town hall meeting. The event, at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, was billed as “open to the public.” Yet Carol Kreck, a 61-year-old librarian carrying a “McCain=Bush” sign, was taken away by police for trespassing.

How was her freedom affected in any way? She made her statement and they didn't like it...she won- s1mph0ny, on 07/08/2008, -1/+19I don't think you understand what is the meaning of an "open to the public" event. Kicking someone out is kind of like putting a "free beer" sign outside your bar, then charging everyone with theft because they didn't pay.
- qwertydvorak, on 07/08/2008, -4/+4plenty of establishments are "open to the public," but at te same time "reserve the right to refuse service to anyone."
http://www.legalmatch.com/law-library/article/rest ... - s1mph0ny, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1@qwertydvorak: That's generally only applicable to private businesses. Government functions are done on public funds which makes ejecting someone on a whim completely illegal.

- LeeSoong, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1If an officer of the law says 'no signs' in the building,
that is different than saying 'No Librarians'.
Citizens are required to follow officers' lawful directions,
an officer's request for no signs is a lawful request.
He clearly said she could go in, without the sign.
So she could have left the sign in a trash can (no littering!) and go into the town hall meeting. No problem here, and no story to tell.
The Police are not at fault for enforcing order.
If ANY other signs were let in - that is bad, but if NO signs were let in, that was fair.
She could have rolled up the sign (written on cloth) and then sneak the sign in to the town hall meeting. Then when she displayed the sign she would have been removed, and maybe taser zapped if she resisted arrest - but she would have had a chance to display her sign.

- Bartboy919, on 07/07/2008, -10/+22Am I correct in assessing that because Bush endorsed McCain, he does is in fact equal McCain?
- hoghug, on 07/08/2008, -1/+31No, it's because McCain voted with/supported Bush 100% in '08 and 95% in 07. Try and keep up.
- Technohamster, on 07/08/2008, -0/+3I believe that would be affirming the consequent.
- leubstop, on 07/08/2008, -13/+5Am I correct in assessing that because Rev Wright. endorsed Obama, he does is in fact equal Obama?
- MaTT2011, on 07/08/2008, -4/+14Your logic is flawless!
So since I endorsed Obama I, in fact, equal Obama! I am Obama!!!!! w00t!
I also endorse spiderman, the Hulk and delicious cheesy doritos! I AM CHEESY OBAMULK-MAN!!
Thank you so much, all of you, for showing me this wonderful line of reasoning that has revealed my awesomeness to me, now i can truly use my powers for good. - Bartboy919, on 07/08/2008, -0/+10Erm, excuse me sir, I may be wrong, but, I thought that since Rev. Wright was in fact, a religious leader, he is barred from endorsing any candidate for president, lest his church loose their tax exemption status.
Further more, I would state that just because someone is a member of a church, does not mean that the entirety of the church supports the person in any way. Take John Kerry for example. He is a Roman Catholic who supported Abortion rights. The Roman Catholic Church on the other hand, would rather no have abortion rights legal within any country. Therefore one would assume that the Roman Catholic Church did not endorse John Kerry.
In Conclusion, just because one is a member of an organization does not mean that the organization necessarily endorses that one member in any way.
Thank you for your understanding, and by the way, I believe you have just been served. - lajaw, on 07/08/2008, -8/+1fartboy_- "Bush endorsed McCain, he does is in fact equal McCain?"
Therefore, "Rev Wright. endorsed Obama, he does is in fact equal Obama" is in fact true.
If 5+6=11, and 7+4=11, then 5+6=7+4. Very simple. Use some logic and Obama and McCain are both losers for this country. Live with it lefty.

- nontoxyc, on 07/08/2008, -7/+14I'm sure at an Obama event they would welcome a protester with a huge "OBAMA=BUSH" sign. Hey maybe I should make one and take it with me to the DNC.

Not saying that they wouldn't let her be for better reasons, just saying that they seem quick enough to realize that even if they "hate the bloggers" as much as McCain they realize they have to be aware of them.
- MaTT2011, on 07/08/2008, -8/+5Yah, lets not talk about this event and its occurrence; lets think up imaginary counter examples and go on the offensive! Clearly we have no way of defending such actions so lets attribute them to the competition and attack em!

- batmanz, on 07/08/2008, -9/+12AGAIN?????!
I am all for Obama, but this is extremely biased. Mccain had nothing to do with the exclusion, and this woman was disrupting the meeting. Obama, Clinton, and all the other candidates have had people removed, including Obama removing two Muslim women who were sitting in view of a camera, while wearing their head scarves. But whatever...
Obama 08- 9bpm9, on 07/08/2008, -2/+6Digg is like the National Media that they all hate, they're hypocrites who only look at one side of a story and ignore anybody who disagrees or tries to prove them wrong.
- BobbyMC, on 07/21/2008, -4/+5As I remember the women were simply behind him or something and his aides asked them not to be. Regardless, it is a documented fact he called them personally and apologized for said actions which he in no way authorized.
- Nosferotu, on 07/08/2008, -1/+2You start by saying McCain had nothing to do with the exclusion, then use an example of some of Obama's aides, without Obama's permission, asking some muslim women to move (not leave, move) as though Obama HAD demanded it happen...
Then say you're for Obama? I am so goddamn confused right now.

- Sogui, on 07/08/2008, -2/+11I just remembered one other important point, ANY signs are typically NOT allowed at these events. I was told at an Obama rally in Austin that signs would NOT be permitted because:
1) They blocked the views of others
2) They were seen as a security hazard, somebody could hypothetically use a sign as cover for assembling a concealing weapon or to cover someone else doing the same.
Considering that these orders came from the Secret Service, this doesn't surprise me at all.- Bartboy919, on 07/08/2008, -1/+7Problem being, she was kicked out for trespassing.

- xman8, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1I think you missed the point! It is not what is on the sign. It is the (sign its self) that got her in trouble. It could have said "I love Democrats" and she would have still gotten a ticket.

Here is the important part that everyone seems to forget:
"You can keep your sign here and receive a ticket for trespassing, or you can remove the sign and stay in line and attend this town hall meeting."
They gave her the option, and she took the trespassing. My guess is this was intentional. - Buckwyld, on 07/08/2008, -8/+5I think that librarian is a jackass. You're arbitrarily assuming the validity of your argument, and using it as a counter argument. That's a little circular. It's as effective as the following:
-The Strokes are better than Madonna.
-Well I could say that Brittney Spears is better than the White Stripes.
-Not necessarily, because the Strokes ARE better than Madonn, while Brittney Spears is not better than the White Stripes.
Asserting your original point doesn't make it any more true. It just makes you seem silly.

I also think Obama is trying to hide something by using a stadium that the networks will not have total access to; I think he probably has a problem with the media and so this is what we can expect if he becomes President. The media as his enemy. We will continue to get the distorted and filtered news we get now; has to be passed by the Bush censor.
