Hate Groups' Newest Target: Obama
washingtonpost.com — Sen. Barack Obama's historic victory in the Democratic primaries, celebrated in America and across much of the world as a symbol of racial progress and cultural unity, has also sparked an increase in racist and white supremacist activity, mainly on the Internet, according to leaders of hate groups and the organizations that track them.

- industryfinest, on 06/22/2008, -14/+22Obama's win didn't aroused a community of racists, the racists never went anywhere, just covered by names like Reagan Democrats, and Blue collar workers. This country needs new leadership and the fact that Obama is winning in all the polls and growing daily have them shaking in there bedsheets!!!!!
- actorboy, on 06/22/2008, -2/+24So blue-collar workers and Reagan Democrats are racists? Nothing like using an absurd over-generalization to fight absurd over-generalizations. Racism is a found across our entire country and in every social strata. Upside? Tolerance and acceptance are also found across our entire country and in every social strata. Stop playing the "my group is better than their group" game. Confront individuals.
- deadowl, on 06/23/2008, -3/+5Well, tolerance is found in every social strata, unless you're in the Westboro Baptist Church strata.
Go ahead, look up their website.

- DaDrake, on 06/23/2008, -2/+6Lol .... you got to be ***** me. So if you are an industrial working or a moderate democrat .... your automatically a racist?
- aliengoods, on 06/23/2008, -0/+2If you're from West Virginia, then chances are yes.
You remember them, don't you? They were the state where 25% of the people openly admitted they were voting based on race. How many more did it and just didn't let their opinions be known?

- coyote1284, on 06/23/2008, -0/+2*****, I consider my job "blue collar", so I might as ***** well be the ***** Grand Dragon of the KKK, right? ***** your generalizations, I voted for Obama in the Primary and will again in the General, not out of "cultural guilt", either.

- tulwave, on 06/22/2008, -6/+12I feel bad for the guy but the silver lining is that the people dumb enough to be public about their racism are now being tracked through IP addresses and things like that. Whoever gets elected oughta to screw with the racists. Who has time these days to join a hate group. I wish I had that extra time! I would wash my car.
- DaDrake, on 06/23/2008, -1/+5I don't like racist... but we live in the USA and there is free speech. You have as much as a right to protest against Bush as you do to spread hateful speech. As an American, you shouldn't advocate violence against ANY point of view.... no matter how offensive.
- baldr, on 06/23/2008, -0/+3there is a constitutional right to protest. There is not a constitutional right to hate speech.
- ElAssoWipo, on 06/23/2008, -2/+1Protest is hate speech. People don't protest against things because they like them.
Hate speech is a made up word to illegalize differing opinions.
In Quebec there's a psyhologist called Mailloux. He was on the most popular talk show in quebec and the subject of race differences came up.
He said two things:
1. Black people in Northern America were bred by white people for hundreds of years, which is factually true as a result of slavery.
2. Black people in general tend to have a slightly lower IQ test score, which is factually true.
6 months later he couldn't practice psychology anymore. He's banned, licence revoked.
He also said his best friend and his lawyer were black guys and that these differences didn't warrant special treatment and that it's important to consider these things when trying to figure out a way to help the black community to reach equality. (In Quebec, about 90% of black people are Haitian immigrants, there's a big gap between the black community and people born in Quebec).
Now that I agree or not doesn't matter. What he said was factual and he had the evidence to demonstrate it and it was within a context of trying to explain why such a gap exists.
But he offended the anti-defamation league (which only represents black people), they accused him of hate speech and his license was revoked.
Free speech doesn't have limitations. It's all or nothing.
And no, yelling fire in a theater does not transfer to free speech. You make no ideological affirmation, you just make a false alarm. - jcm267, on 06/23/2008, -1/+2http://digg.com/world_news/Hate_speech_or_free_spe ...

- Skurj, on 06/22/2008, -3/+9"What you try not to think about is that maybe if Obama wins, it will create a very demoralizing effect," Doggett said. "Maybe people see him in office, and it's like: 'That's it. It's just too late. Look at what's happened now. We've endured all these defeats, and we've still got a multicultural society.' And then there's just no future for our viewpoint."
i thought that multiculturalism was something america was proud of? there are tons of almost entirely white countries in europe.. why dont all the rednecks ship their trailers overseas and start their own colonies instead of trying to change america?- Pherdnut, on 06/22/2008, -0/+10Because Europeans are a lot less tolerant of ignorant gits than we are for one thing. When your parents and grandparents had to rebuild the continent twice you tend to be more forgiving of things that don't matter and less forgiving of lack of intellectual integrity.

"i thought that multiculturalism was something america was proud of? there are tons of almost entirely white countries in europe.. why dont all the rednecks ship their trailers overseas and start their own colonies instead of trying to change america?"
You know what would happen!
This was the plot of Resident Evil 4! - DaDrake, on 06/23/2008, -0/+3Ok pherdnut, you never been to Europe. Today, Europe still has a caste-like system where certain individuals from certain families are favored. Plus, I used to live in Germany and the hateful speech against the "turks" will shock you. This isn't to say Germans are racist.... its to say EVERY culture has to DEAL with racism and continue to speak against it. With ANY new immigration group coming into a country, racism will emerged.
I also suggest you go to some Danish countries where they try to limit Muslims because they fear they will vote conservatives in office. Not to mention, the French government strongly tries to limit religion on individuals in public institutions (something unconstitutional in the US) since many French see religion (and traditional values Muslims bring) as a threat to their society.
No... the US isn't unique.- Dewhead, on 06/23/2008, -0/+3Every society has ignorant people that will hate and pre-judge someone just because of their color, religion, sex, or anything other lame excuse they can come up with. I think it is very ironic that so many of the "tolerant left" will bash and try to silence anyone who doesn't share their view. It happens all of the time even on Digg.
I am a conservative and I strongly believe that all men are created equal. I am also a Christian and try to live my life the way Scriptures tells me too. These two statements alone will cause anger and hatred towards me from so many of the "tolerant left" who don't even know me. The left will say that I am a bigot because I am a conservative but I have always believed skin color was about as relevent to a person's character as eye color is. If one truly believes that skin color is irrelevent then they usually believe that affirmative action should be abolished. Yet, I am labeled as a bigot because I think black people are just as smart and just as capable as white people and therefore they do not need to be given "passes" to make it in this society. As a Christian, I believe we are all God's children whether we are gay, straight, atheist, or whatever, but the left will say that I hate anyone who is different from me. Where is the proof of that?
Everyone should look at themselves and address their own biases before they start pointing the finger at someone else.- Kizilbash, on 06/23/2008, -1/+1"If one truly believes that skin color is irrelevent then they usually believe that affirmative action should be abolished. It is not about thinking black people are not smart enough or not capable enough an neither is it about giving black people 'passes', it is about white people having a head start, just by the fact that they are white. Affirmative action means leveling the playing field, that is all. It is all very well to think 'skin color is irrelevant', the fact remains that in the real world it is not. - Dewhead, on 06/23/2008, -0/+1People hire the most qualified person if they are serious about having a profitable business. Affirmative action does the exact opposite--it unlevels the playing field by giving an unearned advantage to someone based on color and not qualifications.

- Pherdnut, on 06/22/2008, -1/+11It's better to see them out in the open where we can mock them and make their children and relatives embarrassed to be associated with them.
- HardSide, on 06/23/2008, -0/+1So you gonna mock people's children because you don't agree with there parents? How is it the kids fault for being born to people you may or may not like. WTF is wrong with you?

- Berkana, on 06/23/2008, -1/+5Yet at the same time, having an incompetent moron puppet of greed driven corporations as president didn't awaken white Americans? They'll bitch about an eloquent and principled black leader but won't raise hell over what George Bush has done? Seriously, what the hell?
- jcm267, on 06/23/2008, -1/+1Bush can't make prepared speeches but does much better off the cuff. Obama is a great speaker when he's prepared but bumbles when he's not making prepared speeches.
Both men are extremely intelligent. People who call Bush stupid are either idiots themselves or are just being partisan.

- sKiLLa182, on 06/23/2008, -2/+11Just look at digg, there's these rabid Obama haters that spam up digg by submitting ludicrous stories and collectively trying to digg them up.
Especially that "xdcc" guy and his many other accounts.- DaDrake, on 06/23/2008, -7/+2skilla, I think I speak for everyone that digg is controlled by pro-Obama people. Then again, digging up an alternative point of view must be "racist" and "hateful" instead of fair... right.... mmmk?
- chicofaraby, on 06/23/2008, -2/+4Digg is controlled by it's users. The fact that more Digg users prefer to Digg pro-Obama stories instead of pro-McCain stories isn't a problem. It's merely reality. Deal with it.
- ssn697, on 06/23/2008, -0/+3you didn't look at xdcc's submissions before commenting, did you?
Didn't think so. Thanks for the generic reply though. Very thought provoking, in a face palm kinda way.

- chuckDontSurf, on 06/23/2008, -0/+8Wait, hate groups are becoming more active as we approach the imminent election of the first black president? Didn't see that one coming.

- scotishstriker, on 06/23/2008, -0/+3what is wrong with people?
- Kangalanatolian, on 06/23/2008, -12/+3I could vote for Joseph Sobran. I could REALLY vote for Will Grigg or Walter Williams. It is NOT that Obama is black that is a problem. His associates have been shown to be racists. Bad, but again, in America I think this is to be expected. His friends can't all be rich elitists. He is a socialist. Did we forget? I think a lot of us did.
Globalism will replace our constitutional rights if we are not careful. - B08ama, on 06/23/2008, -0/+2People who submit articles like this are making a mistake because these hate groups are getting a voice. People who hear about this are confronted with taking sides, as opposed to before when they hadn't heard about the nasty gatherings.
- Berkana, on 06/23/2008, -0/+1Newest? They've hated him long before now.
These people shouldn't be getting media attention; this just amplifies their advertising to attract like minded haters. - digitronix, on 06/23/2008, -1/+1Hate groups = 0.01% of America. Why even bother?

- HumanCattle, on 06/24/2008, -0/+2jcm267: They see McCain as a "Zionist" who will advance the "Jewish" agenda.

Considering they're in our territory, I say we Digg effect these sites until November. - Spamcan, on 06/23/2008, -4/+2Both Hilary and Huckabee eluded to this already, but there's a chance that some deranged racist redneck will attempt to go after Obama in his first term. It probably won't happen, but I would be surprised if the scenario hasn't been thoroughly planned for by those charged with his protection.
- freshgrease, on 06/23/2008, -2/+2Well, with the cost of gas these days and the general poorness of proper rednecks, I say he'll only get half way to Washington.

define hate speech?
its defined by who ever is in power!
oh ya that's makes sense
the person who is in power today is calling for the arrest of someone today for hate speech is the same guy who is being arrested for hate speech tomorrow because someone new in power didn't like what he said.
you people are idiots
just come out and say what you mean

- Evicted, on 06/23/2008, -0/+1alarmist *****. Fails to mention that though the KKK has 150+ chapters across 34 states, there are still only about 8000 of them in the whole country, thats less members than the Cat Fanciers' Association. So, more people in the United States consider themselves to be cat enthusiasts than white supremacists, not exactly as present a danger as the Washington post seems to want it to be.

BREAKING NEWS: Racists hate black person
film at 11- ssn697, on 06/23/2008, -0/+4LOL. I disagree with your "subtext" argument, but agree with your above post. Wait, what? Racists are upset? Whoulda thunk it?!?!?!
- BohicaTwentyTwo, on 06/23/2008, -0/+3Then why even publish the article? Since when was the white supremacist endorsement in a presidential election worthy of note?
I guess I'll stop complaining when the Washington Post does an artice on who Hamas supports.
- BohicaTwentyTwo, on 06/23/2008, -1/+4How is this news?
