Free Concert by Popular Band Preceded Obama’s Big Rally
newsbusters.org — Unmentioned in national reporting was the fact that Obama was preceded by a rare, 45-minute free concert by actual rock stars The Decemberists. The Portland-based band has drawn rave reviews from Rolling Stone magazine

- jhuckabee, on 05/21/2008, -11/+2This idiot is implying that a small local band is what made the crowd so big? 72,000 people? Lame!
- The_Red_Monkey, on 05/21/2008, -1/+9They are not exactly a small local band. Just because they do not run on the top 40 stations you listen to does not mean they are not immensely popular. (I had to have at least one troll comment)
I could name off a dozen bands that if they and two to three other bands performed and then someone famous came to speak at the end of a FREE concert that would attract that kind of numbers. That band is huge in that area. I am sure there is some band from AZ. that if they played a free concert and then had a candidate show up could attract a crowd similar.
And remember that we are talking about the Pacific Northwest where there is a massive music culture. Its bigger than Starbucks!

- rigveda, on 05/21/2008, -1/+11Obama is a media construct being forced down America's throat....Hillary is whooping his skinny ass BIG TIME but the media Obama sluts wont give it up and are declaring the punk to be the nominee bcz there masters have decided it is so....SO Obama freaks you think yr supporting Obama yr actually supporting the bastards behind the scenes that pull the strings of war and terrorism.
- The_Red_Monkey, on 05/21/2008, -0/+12Just ask any Obama supporter to name three things he has accomplished in office and then stand back and watch them stutter and stare off in the distance. Whether or not he has done anything of substance his supporters tend to be sheep. I know some will yell about that but the ones that know anything are in the minority.
- gnimsh, on 05/21/2008, -1/+8The Decemberists may be from there, but they're not exactly local any more.
- cashman57, on 05/21/2008, -3/+16Obama is using every trick in the book to get people to think he's a viable candidate for president. He is the least experienced candidate since Democrat Lyndon LaRouche.
I don't think America is stupid enough to elect a gun grabbing rights stealing lying leftist liberal lawyer.
Obama has been a gun grabber his entire political life and has sought ways to disarm Americans.
Add to that the fact he thinks the drug war is a good idea and you see why people should reject him, especially black and biracial Americans. The drug war Obama supports has put millions of people in prison, mostly black and biracial, and has cost trillions of dollars and we still have the same percentage of people on drugs as there ever was.
Obama is the judas goat leading the sheep. - jcm267, on 05/21/2008, -2/+14http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Decemberists
"The band's use of the National Anthem of the Soviet Union as an introduction at many concerts has sparked controversy as it is seen by some as an endorsement of the repressive Soviet system."
Anyways.. I saw MSNBC's report on this rally. They went into how amazing it was that Obama single-handedly attracted this many people. They mentioned a Kerry rally where he had to have Bruce Springsteen (obviously a bigger star than The Decembrists) to attract anything close to these numbers.- BohicaTwentyTwo, on 05/21/2008, -0/+6I wonder if the used the Soviet national anthem for their Obama concert? That would be...noteworthy.
- ssn697, on 05/21/2008, -1/+4They did not. Here is the playlist:

Looks like I wasn't the only one who thought this might not show Obama in the best of light.

- The_Red_Monkey, on 05/21/2008, -1/+13I don't see this article as an attack on Obama but on the BS in the mass media. Having an extremely popular, just because you have not heard of them does not mean they do not have a huge following in that area, band perform with several other band prior and then show up at the end and claim the draw was all for Obama is crap. So if Cheney came out during the Warped Tour and spoke and then claimed everyone was there to see him and the bands were secondary is crazy.
If there was a good free! concert within 90 miles I would probably go. If there was a political speaker or just someone else who I think is rad was going to speak at the end of the show it would make me want to go more. So I do not doubt his appearance sealed the deal for many to show up but lets be honest about how many he draws on his own. Calling it partisan to call out the media on this is weak. Its crap thrown in our face and lies, granted its not as bad but it sets a bad precedent.
And for all concerned this is from a registered republican, I just want the truth put out there and am sick of the corrupt pricks in D.C claiming they give a ***** about us and the mass media coddling Obama's balls along the campaign. We need to be critical of all of the reports. - ssn697, on 05/21/2008, -3/+3I don't get it. I heard about this rally nearly two weeks before it happened, in the MSM. the articles all talked about the Decemberists being the opening act. I thought everyone realized that was what was going on.
I don't know. Maybe it is because I am a musician, but I was fully aware of this long before the rally.- jcm267, on 05/21/2008, -2/+2When I looked at the wiki pages for the band I saw the lead singer is from Helena. Are you sure it wasn't the local media?
Anyways, I did a little unscientific Google search for this.
Mentions Decembrists:

Doesn't mention:

(dupe of above, doesn't appear to be wire. are both of the aussi papers owned by the same company?)

And the one that take the cake:

"“We were just talking about that: How we didn’t have a rock star or a Hollywood star and got that crowd,” Shapiro (Obama's Oregon Press Secretary) said, sounding a bit stunned by the turnout.
Not unless you count Barack and Michelle Obama, that is."- ssn697, on 05/21/2008, -1/+1Couldn't have been local. I don't read the local paper ;-)
I would have to go look. I was reading about it online. I even emailed some Oregon friends, asking them if they were going.
I am not surprised that most of the media was clueless about anything other than a picture from the event though.
How many of your links are pre-event? I haven't paid any attention to the post event stuff.- jcm267, on 05/21/2008, -1/+1One was pre-event, the nme.com one. I searched Google News for "obama decembrists" and then clicked on all the relevant results to the Guardian story.
- The_Red_Monkey, on 05/21/2008, -0/+2That shows how biased the media is and what a bunch of ***** liars they are.
- ssn697, on 05/21/2008, -1/+1Couldn't have been local. I don't read the local paper ;-)
- The_Red_Monkey, on 05/21/2008, -1/+3The sticking point is that national media outlets did not disclose the concert information.
- jcm267, on 05/21/2008, -2/+2When I looked at the wiki pages for the band I saw the lead singer is from Helena. Are you sure it wasn't the local media?
- jayfarer, on 05/21/2008, -4/+2If you guys think The Decemberists are the reason most of the 75,000 people came out, you know nothing about the band.
They're getting big, but they barely filled up the Wiltern Theatre when I went to see them, which is not a giant venue at all.- ssn697, on 05/21/2008, -3/+3Did you see them before, or after their Colbert bump?
SHRED OFF!!! - jcm267, on 05/21/2008, -3/+5OK. That venue seats 2,300. How much were tickets for this show? How big are they in Oregon, the place that they started out? I'm sure that thousands, if not tens of thousands, or the attendees would not have shown up if the Decembrists weren't performing for free.
- The_Red_Monkey, on 05/21/2008, -0/+2It did not hurt now did it. It was also a free concert. How many more people show up for free anything?
- ssn697, on 05/21/2008, -3/+3Did you see them before, or after their Colbert bump?
- PeppermintPig, on 05/21/2008, -1/+2Not a fan of the Decemberists, but even I know who they are.
A free concert has the tendency to draw much larger crowds. But I would reserve judgment on what the biggest impact factor was. Perhaps someone who attended could explain. - trestevenson, on 05/22/2008, -0/+2The media sucks. That's what I got from the article.
