A republican newspaper endorsing Obama?
Jesus Christ! I would not been suprised in SunTimes did this.. but The Tribune?
Breathtaking... Truly historical! - BuryHuffPost, on 10/17/2008, -26/+11Sweet! A second tier newspaper in CHICAGO supports Obama.
What a shocker!- Anim8tor, on 10/17/2008, -1/+13That newspaper MADE Abraham Lincoln, man!
- fh3011, on 10/17/2008, -3/+4I thought Mr and Mrs Lincoln made Abraham Lincoln.
- AmyVernon, on 10/17/2008, -1/+15It is actually a shocker, given that the newspaper was founded by Republicans and has never endorsed a Democratic nominee in its history.
- SSPink, on 10/17/2008, -2/+13Someone called BuryHuffPost says something ignorant.
What a shocker!- BuryHuffPost, on 10/20/2008, -1/+1And yet you have no counter arguments.
- SSPink, on 10/21/2008, -0/+1I'm sorry, "counter arguments" are for responses to people who made a point in the first place. You made no argument, you simply belittled the newspaper.
Ad hominem attacks don't require "counter arguments", they require mocking and ridicule.
- Anim8tor, on 10/17/2008, -1/+13That newspaper MADE Abraham Lincoln, man!
- darkism, on 10/17/2008, -3/+34Coming from the Tribune, this is HUGE.
- fh3011, on 10/17/2008, -4/+2or EXPECTED.
- darkism, on 10/17/2008, -0/+7Yea, REALLY expected coming from the paper that's NEVER endorsed a Democrat for president in its ENTIRE HISTORY.

- issaccheriyathu, on 10/17/2008, -2/+29When the ultra conservative Tribune endorses Obama,
Here is a letter of support to Prof. Douglas W Kmiec, the eminent Catholic scholar and conservative who endorsed Obama. Digg this too.

No conservative with a right mind can support the blind spending Dubya policies from McCain. - ReasonWinsOut, on 01/07/2009, -4/+17Like sands through the hourglass, so are the hopes of McCain!
- seddyei, on 10/17/2008, -4/+22GOPers are abandoning ship in an unprecedented fashion right now. Great news.
FAUX News is also receiving alot of flack lately, and deservedly so. Could people have gained some common sense?- NocturnalLee, on 12/08/2008, -0/+4Faux News deserves the flak. They should be forced to put "For Entertainment Purposes Only" across the bottom of the screen.
- paintgrl, on 10/17/2008, -4/+18Is that the other shoe I hear dropping? It is a rain of foot wear.
- JeremyManier, on 10/17/2008, -5/+21I hear Rush Limbaugh is contemplating an Obama endorsement, too. And G. Gordon Liddy. And Ollie North. In fact, it's possible that John McCain will endorse Obama.
Any of those would be just a little less likely than the Chicago Tribune endorsing a Democrat. It's never, ever happened - not for FDR, not for JFK. The Tribune helped found the Republican Party. This is an historic day.- acmaurer, on 10/17/2008, -1/+6Dugg up for "it's possible that John McCain will endorse Obama."
Nice.
- acmaurer, on 10/17/2008, -1/+6Dugg up for "it's possible that John McCain will endorse Obama."

http://www.topix.net/forum/source/chicago-tribune/ ... - killiantobin, on 10/17/2008, -3/+14Unbelievable, When does that Colin Powell endorsement come out!
- Olon97, on 10/17/2008, -1/+6He's doing Meet The Press on Sunday, it will be hard for him to dodge the question at that point if he's going to endorse anyone.
- Nick217, on 10/17/2008, -2/+17this is so huge, especially with as hard as the trib has investigated obama. their reporters probably know him better than most!
- MHunt, on 10/17/2008, -16/+6Wow. This is completely unbelievable. A newspaper endorsed their home-town candidate! I'll be that's the first time in history that a newspaper endorsed the local man.
In other news, the sky is blue, and water is wet. More breaking news later.- dan360man, on 10/17/2008, -2/+5Water is wet?
- MediaWeasel, on 10/17/2008, -1/+17Quote:
"Many Americans say they're uneasy about Obama. He's pretty new to them.
We can provide some assurance. We have known Obama since he entered politics a dozen years ago. We have watched him, worked with him, argued with him as he rose from an effective state senator to an inspiring U.S. senator to the Democratic Party's nominee for president.
We have tremendous confidence in his intellectual rigor, his moral compass and his ability to make sound, thoughtful, careful decisions. He is ready."
And so say all of us. - fh3011, on 10/17/2008, -9/+5Time to cancel my trib subscription. First the terrible redesign, now this. Next, they'll turn the cubs into a joke, oh wait, trib already did that.
- scribeguy, on 10/17/2008, -1/+14It's been a long time since Horace Greeley was endorsed by the Democrats and the Tribune. Sure Obama is a local pol, but the endorsement still is a big deal when you consider the historical context. Remember, Nixon remarked that he knew he had lost the country when he lost the Chicago Tribune.
- MediaWeasel, on 10/17/2008, -0/+15Oh, and incidentally .. those comments after the article just made me laugh. Right wingers reduced to calling the paper a "liberal rag" ..!! .. fun reading. :-)
What's also interesting is that a) all the complainers are thinking of nothing and no-one but themselves, and b) haven't understood Obama's policies because they've been distorted by McCain's campaign. They haven't realised that any "increase" in tax - and only for those earning above $250,000 as a couple or $200,000 as a single person - is simply going to be a rollback to previous tax levels.- fh3011, on 10/17/2008, -3/+2your a weasel.
- MediaWeasel, on 10/17/2008, -0/+3Yup.
And imagine the unbearable pain of the Trib eds and staff when they realise you've cancelled your sub. - fh3011, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2They're all to busy worrying about losing their jobs to worry about my sub.
- MediaWeasel, on 10/17/2008, -0/+3Yup.
- fh3011, on 10/17/2008, -3/+2your a weasel.
- bobhiggins, on 10/17/2008, -9/+3The same newspaper that endorsed Tom Dewey and then mistakenly celebrated his victory over Harry Truman 60 years ago next month just endorsed Barack "Steve" Obama for President. Good job Trib, that's change we can believe in.

Bob Higgins
http://worldwide-sawdust.com- JenniferInMO, on 10/17/2008, -1/+3Aw geez, now THAT is holding a grudge. The "STEVE" middle name change is funny because Barack made a self-deprecating joke about his middle name last night.
- JenniferInMO, on 10/17/2008, -1/+13The Tribune reporters have been all over Obama since he went into state politics. They have worked tirelessly to come up with something bad about his tangential connection to Ayers. If anyone has been investigating that dead horse forever it is the Trib.
- JenniferInMO, on 10/17/2008, -0/+13One of the comments from the Tribune's forum: "Is that chill coming from hell? Do I see porcine aviation outside my window?? "
lol - jamesalfaro, on 10/17/2008, -0/+12A historic moment for the Tribune. This is the first time the newspaper has endorsed the Democratic Party's nominee for president in its 161 year history.
- EatingPie, on 10/17/2008, -7/+4The Chicago Tribune is not a republican newspaper -- the Tribune Company owns the LA Times, which is extremely liberal (but decent). They are, however, consider one of the two best papers in the US along with the NYTimes.
To be honest, I for one am think it is unethical for newspapers to endorse a candidate. That's a public declaration of bias, and significantly undermines their ability to *fairly* report political news.
-Pie- gwayo, on 10/18/2008, -0/+3Actually, while people think that because the LA Times is in LA, it's a liberal paper, its roots are very much conservative, and you will see in their endorsement that they are particularly conservative on the fiscal side and make that clear in their reservations about Obama's economic plan.
I hear you about endorsements, but do consider that an endorsement is reflective only of a consensus of the editorial board, while the paper will reflect zillions of writers of different persuasions, as well as printing stories from generally neutral sources (I know, Reuters and AP aren't always 100% neutral, but both have strict standards of journalism). Sure, there can be a slant, but good editors are more interested in the overall balance. I know that this is a generalization. I have a friend who is the editor-in-chief of a conservative-leaning magazine, and she is a Democrat. She doesn't push an agenda; she goes for balance.
- gwayo, on 10/18/2008, -0/+3Actually, while people think that because the LA Times is in LA, it's a liberal paper, its roots are very much conservative, and you will see in their endorsement that they are particularly conservative on the fiscal side and make that clear in their reservations about Obama's economic plan.
- cufford, on 10/17/2008, -1/+5If you can't beat em, join em!
- Moonrider, on 10/17/2008, -3/+4Just another example of how much the media controls the election of officials, they ignore the truly excellent candidates early on (and if that doesn't work they marginalize them by saying "he can't win", "he's not electable", etc., etc., etc.) then they hype one or another of the "sold out whores" to no end, giviing them free campiagn ads in their articles and editorials. The mainstream media is just the propaganda arm of the duopoly, the so called "major" political parties (which really are not "major" as only 23% of people identify themselves as Republican and only 24% identify themselves as Democrat, that leaves 53% who are neither). Come on you members of the 53%, exercise your considerable power and vote outside that paradigm for once, maybe then we can get some REAL change in government.,
- ugottabejoken, on 10/17/2008, -1/+10This is a HUGE blow to the McCain/Palin ticket. :)
Hope fades, Hope fades.- Gemfinder, on 10/18/2008, -0/+3And meanwhile, HOPE riseth.
- CaLaVa, on 10/17/2008, -1/+7Whew! I'm from Chicago and I was worried about this. It matters..It matters that his hometown paper endorsed him. Now I don't have to cancel my subscription.
- fh3011, on 10/17/2008, -4/+3I'm glad this submission got killed. not digg worthy.
- LoneRanger85, on 10/18/2008, -2/+2"It took Abraham Lincoln's extraordinary courage in the Civil War to get us here." Yup. Abraham Lincoln was a Republican. "It took an epic battle to secure women the right to vote." Yup. The suffragettes were Republicans. Democrats fought against women having the right to vote. "It took the perseverance of the civil rights movement." Republicans again. Democrats fought against every piece of civil rights legislation from 1864 to 1964. "Now we have an election in which we will choose the first African-American president . . . or the first female vice president." So, let's endorse the DEMOCRAT.
- gwayo, on 10/18/2008, -0/+4Very nice, succinct summary of what real conservatives should be considering:
The Republican Party, the party of limited government, has lost its way. The government ran a $237 billion surplus in 2000, the year before Bush took office -- and recorded a $455 billion deficit in 2008... It is hard to figure John McCain these days. He argued that President Bush's tax cuts were fiscally irresponsible, but he now supports them. He promises a balanced budget by the end of his first term, but his tax cut plan would add an estimated $4.2 trillion in debt over 10 years. He has responded to the economic crisis with an angry, populist message and a misguided, $300 billion proposal to buy up bad mortgages. - straightalk, on 10/18/2008, -0/+2Yehhhhhhhhhhh
- VicTheKnife, on 10/18/2008, -0/+2"We are proud to add Barack Obama's name to Lincoln's in the list of people the Tribune has endorsed for president of the United States."
Awesome.
