It has become increasingly clear that streaming music and even touring aren't sustainable ways for most musicians to make a living these days. As such, merch sales are often where fans can really show their support for their favorite artists and bands.
The team over at CustomInk, a custom apparel company, was curious to see which bands and artists have the heaviest T-shirt interest by state, so they put together a map using Google search data. Plus, they surveyed a thousand Americans to get the lowdown about their merch opinions.
Key findings:
-
Olivia Rodrigo has the most-searched tees in the country, and that includes the number one spot in four states: New York, Washington, Massachusetts and South Carolina.
-
It's no surprise that popular modern artists like Bad Bunny and Ariana Grande make the cut in some states, but there are a few oddballs that are worth calling out. Colorado loves Skrillex, Kansas and Missouri are both really into Poppy and Maryland is keeping it old school with Ozzy Osbourne.
-
Short-sleeve tees are by far the most popular merch with 88 percent of respondents interested in them. Non-hooded sweatshirts are much less appealing with a mere 17 percent of the crowd in support.
-
American music lovers end up spending $400 on average on band tees throughout their lives. We have some catching up to do!
