Paris child-pickpocketing network leader jailed for eight years for human trafficking
The Guardian reports that Roberto Hamidovic ran a network that sent children, some as young as 10, to steal from tourists in the Paris Métro and at Disneyland Paris.
TLDR
The Guardian reports that a Paris court sentenced Roberto Hamidovic to eight years in prison and a €500,000 fine for human trafficking. Six relatives also received prison sentences. Police said the child pickpockets, mostly girls, brought in an average of €25,000 a day. The court heard that children who failed to hand over enough money were beaten, burned or sexually abused. All seven defendants denied the charges. After sentencing, Hamidovic’s lawyer called the sentences too severe and said there was no tangible evidence of human trafficking.
