EU governments back one-year delay to methane reporting for fossil-fuel importers
The proposed Jan. 1, 2028, start still requires agreement with the European Parliament.
TLDR
Oil, gas and coal importers would get another year before methane-reporting requirements take effect under the EU Council's negotiating position. Governments cited energy disruption linked to the US-Israeli war with Iran. Agreement with the European Parliament is still needed. The Council also proposed two conditional additional one-year delays if the European Commission cannot show implementation is ready.
