Carney’s push for closer EU ties draws criticism over trade ratification

Pierre Poilievre accused Carney of failing to secure ratification of an existing EU trade deal, including from France after a meeting with Macron.

TLDR

In a September 22, 2026 post, Pierre Poilievre called Carney’s efforts to deepen EU ties “all talk and no results.” He said Carney had failed to get the existing free trade deal ratified by all 27 European countries and criticized a recent meeting with Macron for not securing French ratification. He contrasted the diplomatic push with what he described as people at home being unable to afford groceries, gas and mortgages.

@PierrePoilievreLike everything else he does, Carney’s so-called “deepening ties with the EU” is all talk and no results. We already have a free trade deal with the EU, but he has failed to get the needed 27 European countries to ratify it. He held another overhyped meeting with Macron the other day, but couldn’t even get the French to ratify that trade deal we already have. It is all show and no go. Meanwhile here at home, people cannot afford groceries, gas, and mortgages.
