The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation plans to launch its Tokenization Service in October 2026, extending a system that turns eligible securities held at its Depository Trust Company subsidiary into blockchain-based “digital twins.”
Those tokens are designed to remain interchangeable with the securities held at DTC. DTCC says they will carry the same ownership rights, investor protections and entitlements as assets held in traditional form, while giving approved participants another way to move and use them.
What July’s production test covered
DTCC said it completed production trades with tokenized assets on July 15. More than 30 financial and technology firms took part, and conversions ran on two networks: LFDT’s Besu, a private network used by DTCC, and the public Canton Network.
The test included collateral pledges, securities lending, U.S. Treasury and repo delivery-versus-payment trades, equity trades, token transfers and margin workflows. The exercise used assets already held at DTC rather than creating separate instruments that merely track their prices.
DTCC describes the conversion as reversible. Participating firms can move a security between its traditional record and tokenized form, with the digital version delivered to an approved DTC participant wallet.
