Paraguayan authorities have moved former President Santiago Peña to a military base for his protection, Al Jazeera reported in a Nov. 7, 2026, post. The outlet said he had earlier been placed under house arrest after the collapse of UENO bank.
Al Jazeera did not describe a specific threat to Peña or say whether the transfer changed his detention status.
Separately, OCCRP reported that Peña had been “removed from office and arrested”, without specifying the office. It said he was accused, among other allegations, of trying to protect a digital bank in which he formerly held an ownership stake. The post did not identify who made the accusation or describe the other allegations.
In its Nov. 7 post, OCCRP said authorities had ordered that bank into insolvency that week, leaving millions of citizens without access to their accounts. It did not give a precise number of affected account holders or say how long the loss of access would last.
Al Jazeera named UENO bank, while OCCRP left the digital bank unnamed. The two posts do not explicitly establish that OCCRP’s ownership allegation and insolvency report concern UENO.
