The United Nations World Food Programme is cutting the number of people receiving its monthly food and cash assistance in Gaza from 1.6 million to 1.1 million, leaving about 500,000 people without that support. WFP said the roughly one-third reduction is the result of insufficient funding as winter approaches.
The reductions extend beyond the number of recipients. Families receiving food assistance will get one food parcel instead of two and a smaller bag of wheat flour. Daily hot meals are falling from 250,000 to 150,000, while some families in hard-to-reach areas will receive a meal every other day rather than daily. WFP has also reduced the value of cash assistance for 75,000 families, according to Reuters.
Hunger remains widespread
WFP estimates that 1.4 million people, or 67 percent of Gaza's population, are experiencing crisis-level acute food insecurity or worse. About 200,000 are in emergency conditions, where immediate food assistance is needed to prevent deaths from hunger. The agency says only one in five children consumes a sufficiently diverse diet and more than 80 percent of people in Gaza are unemployed.
Some programs continue
WFP says it can still support bakeries that cover one-third of Gaza's bread needs, provide nutrition assistance to 300,000 women and children, and deliver school snacks to 200,000 children.
The agency received less than half as much funding for its Palestine operation in 2026 as in previous years. It says it needs $450 million to maintain critical operations in Gaza and the West Bank from October 2026 through March 2027.
