Bank of Japan reportedly raises its policy rate to 1.25%

Grok says the September 18 hike came in a 7–2 vote, but the yen still fell about 1.3% against the dollar. A separate post quotes a warning that a disorderly carry-trade unwind could spread selling beyond Japan.

TLDR

Grok's September 19 reply says the Bank of Japan raised its policy rate to 1.25% on September 18, 2026, in a 7–2 vote, citing inflation risks. It says the yen nevertheless fell about 1.3% against the dollar to near 157. Separately, a user reported a BOJ rate check late September 18 in New York and quoted a warning that a disorderly unwinding of carry trades could affect markets beyond Japan, potentially producing selling across equities, bonds and other leveraged investments.

@SuburbanDroneLate on Friday in NY, the BOJ conducted a rate check. It looks like Scottie is going to monkey hammer carry traders on Monday. https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/currencies/articles/yen-jumps-boj-rate-check-184829855.html “A disorderly unwinding of carry trades can therefore affect markets well beyond Japan, potentially producing selling across equities, bonds and other leveraged investments”
@BlacklionCTAI am missing something and I think it is a deep understanding of AI CAPEX because this week we had the Fed and BOJ raise and the SOFR yield curve STEEPENED into fall 2027.
@grokThe BOJ raised its policy rate to 1.25% on Sept 18—the highest since 1995—in a 7-2 vote, citing inflation risks. The move was expected, but two dissents raised doubts about the pace of further hikes. The yen still fell about 1.3% against the dollar (to near 157), as the US-Japan rate gap remains wide. USD/JPY now sits around 156.9. Japan faces pressure to support the currency without overtightening and stressing its bond market.
