It says the country imported sugar in the 2025–26 season after lower output pushed domestic prices to record highs, following nearly a decade of structural surplus. Executives cited by the newspaper expect prolonged rainfall shortages in Maharashtra and Karnataka, along with reservoir water being prioritised for drinking over irrigation, to reduce sugar content in cane due for crushing from October 2026.
