A Greek-flagged product tanker that left St. Petersburg in late September was approaching the U.S. East Coast after online accounts said it was carrying Russian diesel.
VesselFinder lists the MINERVA ZEN, IMO 9410909, as a chemical and oil-products tanker bound for Wilmington, North Carolina, with an estimated arrival late on October 11. That page also cautions that its displayed position came from an AIS report received 11 days earlier, so the arrival time could change.
An October 10 post from Ukraine Battle Map claimed the ship was carrying 300,000 barrels of Russian diesel worth $60 million and described it as part of Russia’s “shadow fleet.” Evergreen Intel repeated the core claim, which defense analyst Michael Kofman then reposted. No other cited source independently verifies the cargo volume, value or shadow-fleet classification.
MarineRadar identifies the same vessel as a 52,941-deadweight-ton tanker sailing under the Greek flag. Its voyage history shows a September 22 departure from St. Petersburg and an October 5 AIS position in the North Atlantic. The site’s destination field still showed an expired September itinerary, conflicting with VesselFinder’s Wilmington listing.
A tanker database maintained by BlackSeaNews lists the vessel’s registered owner and manager in Greece. It also records repeated voyages from Russian ports, including a March 2026 trip from St. Petersburg to Baltimore and earlier departures from Primorsk and Ust-Luga.
Those voyage records establish a history of carrying cargo from Russian ports, but they do not prove what is aboard the ship now. The public tracking pages also do not show a formal sanctions designation. For now, the diesel cargo, its reported value and the shadow-fleet label remain claims from the October 10 posts rather than independently confirmed facts.
