The appointments were announced that day at the Asia Gulf Summit in Hong Kong, an invitation-only gathering hosted by Asia Gulf Holdings and Whampoa Group, the newspaper reported.

Maliki will advise the investment group on geopolitical developments, government relations and regional cooperation. Gilbert will focus on global investment strategy, asset management and investment opportunities across Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, according to The Business Times. Maliki retired from politics in May 2025 after 24 years as a member of Parliament; Gilbert co-founded Aberdeen Asset Management, the report noted.

Board chair Amy Lee, a co-founder and chairman of Whampoa Group, said the appointments would strengthen the board’s ability to assess investment opportunities against political and economic developments in both regions, The Business Times reported.
